The Great Wall of China stretches over 5,500 miles from east to west. It was constructed over many dynasties starting in the 5th century BC to protect China from northern invaders. The wall we see today was primarily built during the Ming Dynasty in the 14th-16th centuries. Its purpose was to defend against attacks from Mongol and other nomadic groups living north of China. Maintaining and repairing the wall has cost over 2 million lives over its many centuries of construction and reconstruction.

7. cont There is now a modern section of the wall There is tobogan slide that can be taken from a certain section of the wall, and will take you back to the bottom of the wall There are cable cars that have to be taken in order to get up to the wall and walk around You can not gain access to the wall by walking from ground level.

Information regarding picture This section of the wall was built under the supervision of General XuDa of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang in the Ming Dynasty Forts were built on 2 sides of the wall There were 3 watch towers built A tower called Zhengguan, which could be rarely seen on the great wall The Northwest part of the the wall was constructed on 1,000 mountain high ridge
