3. Philippines under Spanish regime:
The Philippines was a
colony of Spain for 333
years.
From 1565-1893
4. Central government under
Spain:
Spain established one central
government in the Philippines.
Thus, for the first time in our
history, we became united as
one nation called “FILIPINAS”.
6. Differences in the territory
ruled by central government:
The island archipelagoes of Guam, the Marianas,
the Caroline, and the Palau's in the south Pacific
were included in Philippine territory during
Spanish times.
Most of Mindanao and Sulu were excluded.
Interior mountain regions of Luzon and Visayas
were excluded.

8. GOVERNMENT
DEBTS:
Since the beginning the colonial
government in the Philippines suffered
debts year in and year out.
TWO REASONS:
Government officials were dishonest.
The ordinary people lacked cooperation
and loyalty to he State.
11. Christianity and Spanish
colonization
The Spaniards were able to keep the
Philippines as a colony because most of the
Filipinos became Christians.
Filipinos were attracted to Christianity
because of three reasons:
The message of Christianity appealed to the people.
Filipinos life was approved by Christianity
The missionaries helped the soldiers in conquest
and pacification of the Philippines
13. The Power of the Church:
Union of Church and State:
Practice allowing only one religion in the country
Because of this union the church and state, the catholic
priests then had the great influence in government. They
receive their salaries from the government.
Until 1764, the archbishops could act as the temporary
governor-general.

15. The Only Christian Nation:
Spaniards used the Philippines as the military
base and mission centre to spread Spanish
power and Christianity to other Asian counties.
Although it failed they kept the Philippines as a
mission field.
The Philippines was the spiritual light of Asia as
far back as the 16th century.
