AGRICULTURAL INFORMATION TO THE FARMERS IN TAMIL
NADU: A STUDY

ABSTRACT
The term agriculture is derived from the Latin word AGRICULTURA” Which
literally means’ care of soil” The agricultural science deal with the challenges of food and
fiber production and processing. They include the technologies of soil cultivation, crop
cultivation and harvesting animal production, and the processing of plants and animals
products for human consumption and use. Agriculture implies the process of
transformation of the basic land resource into desirable goods. In other words, it is said to
be the art and science of growing of crops and rising of livestock. In its scope it includes
crop production of field cropping tree culture, forestry animal husbandry dairy farming,
poultry farming and fishery
The information with regard to cropping pattern in horticultural crops
particularly rice’s vegetables and true crops is not compiled and ready available
However, the constrains in Production and Zones/States of cultivation of these crops
given briefly along with research gaps and future thrust areas.
INTRODUCTION
Agriculture is the worlds most important industry. It Provides us with almost all our
food . it also supplies materials for two other basic human needs – clothing and shelter In
addition agriculture provides materials used in making many industrial provides such as
paints and medicines about half the worlds are employed in agriculture far more than in
any other industry.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
Modern agricultural university libraries stress the importance library and
information services to agricultural research, teaching, learning, and extension. A major
objective of the present study is to evaluate the library and information services in
agricultural university libraries in South India. The following are other objectives:
• To discover the types of library and information services required by users;

• To elicit opinions about services offered by the library;
• To elicit opinions about the problems faced by users;
To collect opinions about the adequacy of information resources and their use;
HYPOTHESIS
Keeping the objectives of the study in view an attempt has been made to test the
following hypothesis.
• Theirs is a Significant relationship among the farmers and agriculture libraries
• Services rendered by agriculture libraries to the farmers community
METHODOLOGY
The existing situation of library and information services in agricultural
University libraries in Tamil nadu is assessed on the basis of the Primary and
Secondary data collection.
GREEN REVOLUTION MOVEMENT
In India M.S.Swaminathan in Known as the father of Green Revolution, who by
his efforts made the country self sufficient in the production of what and rice. The
participation of radio as vehicle of mass communication in green Revolution in India is
worth mentioning. The farmers were experts in traditional agriculture and were fighters
for green Revolution The Radio becomes the communicating bridge in between the
traditional farmers and the modern scientists of agriculture. Thus, the agriculture
scientists and the farmers both met on the Radio – Platform to exchange views of their
skillfulness on one hand, the agriculture scientists understood the problems of the farmers
and an on agriculture scientists. The result of this exchange of ideas was the research for
new hybrid seeds, which helped in production of more crops through the use of more
chemical manures and advanced agricultural technique The agriculture college reached
the agriculture land and the farmers reached the agricultural college for the solution of
their problems several farmers became agriculture scientists , through they had no
knowledge of English Language. This was green revolution which ultimately relived the
country from import of food grains and to obtain foreign help.

Services Provided by the Department of Agriculture in Tamil Nadu
* The Major services provided by the department of agriculture of the farmers are:
* Extension services for transformation at latest technologies from the university &
research station to the farmers field.
* Distribution of all input like seed, plantation material fertilizers, bio fertilizers,
implements etc.
* Technical know how regarding the various package of practices.
* Organizing Block Demonstration.
* MMM-Soil Health Care Providing facility for soil testing and Modernisation of Mobile
Soil Testing Labs in laboratories which are located in various parts of the state.
* Providing quality control facilities for seeds, fertilizer and plant protection chemicals.
* Training to the farmers in various form activities.
* Providing marketing facilities to the farmers for their products.
* The National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) August 25, 2005 the
provides a legal guarantee for one hundred days of employment to adult members of any
rural household willing to do public work.
* The Kisan Call Centre scheme is available over the complete country. The Call
Centres can be accessed by farmers all over the country on common Toll Free Number
1551 and also kisan credit card services for farmer.

CONCLUSION
Since India is a land of farmers, socioeconomic development depends on the
education of farmers and their information level. They need information to become
enlightened and rational and to make quick and correct decisions to improve rural life.
The nature of information services provided by the agricultural university libraries vary
from one to another, owing to the range of interest of the user community. With the
emergence of the computer and revolutionary changes in communication technology, it
has become possible for a agricultural university libraries to provide a variety of
technology-based information services to users with a wide range of interests.
The libraries under study are in the initial stage of development. Modern
technologies in the libraries are now being used to satisfy the information need of users.
The people working in these libraries need training and exposure to new technologies.
There is a need to develop the culture of interlibrary loan services and electronic
transmission of documents. Databases of theses, journal articles, and library catalogues
must be made available to users.
