Solar energy is radiant energy that is produced by the sun. Everyday the sun radiates,
or sends out, an enormous amount of energy. The sun radiates more energy in one
second than people have used since the beginning of time!
Where does the energy come from that constantly radiates from the sun? It comes
from within the sun itself. Like other stars, the sun is a big ball of gases––mostly
hydrogen and helium atoms. The hydrogen atoms in the sun’s core combine to
form helium and generate energy in a process called nuclear fusion. During
nuclear fusion, the sun’s extremely high pressure and temperature cause hydrogen
atoms to come apart and their nuclei (the central cores of the atoms) to fuse or
combine. Four hydrogen nuclei fuse to become one helium atom. But the helium
atom contains less mass than the four hydrogen atoms that fused. Some matter is
lost during nuclear fusion. The lost matter is emitted into space as radiant energy.
It takes millions of years for the energy in the sun’s core to make its way to the
solar surface, and then just a little over eight minutes to travel the 93 million miles
to earth. The solar energy travels to the earth at a speed of 186,000 miles per
second, the speed of light.
Only a small portion of the energy radiated by the sun into space strikes the earth, one
part in two billion. Yet this amount of energy is enormous. Every day enough
energy strikes the United States to supply the nation’s energy needs for one and a
half years!
Where does all this energy go? About 15 percent of the sun’s energy that hits the earth
is reflected back into space. Another 30 percent is used to evaporate water, which,
lifted into the atmosphere, produces rainfall. Solar energy also is absorbed by
plants, the land, and the oceans. The rest could be used to supply our energy
needs.
History of Solar Energy
People have harnessed solar energy for centuries. As early as the 7th century B.C.,
people used simple magnifying glasses to concentrate the light of the sun into
beams so hot they would cause wood to catch fire.
More than 100 years ago in France, a scientist used heat from a solar collector to make
steam to drive a steam engine. In the beginning of this century, scientists and
engineers began researching ways to use solar energy in earnest. One important
development was a remarkably efficient solar boiler invented by Charles Greeley
Abbott, an American astrophysicist, in 1936.
The solar water heater gained popularity at this time in Florida, California, and the
Southwest. The industry started in the early 1920s and was in full swing just
before World War II. This growth lasted until the mid-1950s when low-cost
natural gas became the primary fuel for heating American homes.
Solar Energy in the future
Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page

As the number of people longing for a cleaner environment grows, so does the solar
industry. Solar cells are becoming increasingly cost-effective as more distributors
enter the market and new technologies continue to offer more choice and new
products. We might even see the end of the combustion age in our lifetime. Cars might
soon be powered by new fuel cells that create electricity through chemical reaction.
Screen-printed solar cells are expected to drive prices down even more. Roofing
shingles are capturing the sun's rays and turning them into electricity! Solar panels are
being mounted to the sides of houses when roof space is not an option. Pools are being
heated with solar energy for a fraction of the price of conventional heaters. Solar
Energy History has indeed come a long way and has a very positive future ahead.
Solar Power in India…
India's power sector has a total installed capacity of approximately 1,46,753 Megawatt
(MW) of which 54% is coal-based, 25% hydro, 8% is renewable and the balance is the
gas and nuclear-based. Power shortages are estimated at about 11% of total energy and
15% of peak capacity requirements and are likely to increase in the coming years. In
the next 10 years, another 10,000 MW of capacity and investment of about Rs. 24 lakh
crore are required.
Fortunately, India lies in sunny regions of the world. Most parts of India receive 4-7
kWh of Solar radiation per square meter per day with 250-300 sunny days in a year.
India has abundant solar resources, as it receives about 3000 hours of sunshine every
year, equivalent to over 5,000 trillion kWh. India can easily utilize the solar energy or
Solar Power. Today the contribution of Solar power with an installed capacity of 9.84
MW, is a fraction (< 0.1 percent) of the total renewable energy installed 13, 242.41(as
on 31st October 2008 by MNRE). Solar power generation has lagged behind other
sources like wind, small hydropower, biomass etc.
But now realizing the potential of Solar energy, Prime Minister of India unveiled a
National Climate Change Action Plan in June 2008. The plan will be implemented
through eight missions with main focus on Solar energy in the total energy mix of the
country.
Government Authorities…
Development of alternate energy has been part of India's strategy for expanding
energy supply and meeting decentralized energy needs of the rural sector. The strategy
is administered through India's Ministry of New Renewable Energy (MNRE), Energy
development agencies in the various States, and the Indian Renewable Energy
Development Agency Limited (IREDA).
Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page

MNRE –
Ministry of New Renewable Energy is the nodal Ministry of the Government of India
for all matters relating to new and renewable energy. In 1982 Department of Non-
conventional Energy Sources (DNES) was created to develop and deploy new and
renewable energy for supplementing the energy requirements of the country. In 1992,
DNES became the Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources. In October 2006,
the Ministry was re-christened as the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The
Ministry has been facilitating the implementation of broad spectrum programmes
including harnessing renewable power, renewable energy to rural areas for lighting,
cooking and motive power, use of renewable energy in urban, industrial and
commercial applications and development of alternate fuels and applications. In
addition, it supports research, design and development of new and renewable energy
technologies, products and services.
IREDA –
Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency is a Public Limited
Government Company established on 11th March, 1987, under the administrative
control of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to promote, develop and
extend financial assistance for renewable energy and energy efficiency/conservation
projects. IREDA has been notified as a & ldquo;Public Financial Institution & rdquo;
under section 4 & lsquo;A’ of the Companies Act, 1956 and registered as Non-
Banking Financial Company (NFBC) with Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
SEC – The Solar Energy Centre (SEC), established in 1982, is a dedicated unit of the
Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India for development of
Solar energy technologies and to promote its applications through product
development.
The institute was set up with a view to encourage research in the field of Solar
technology as a viable alternate energy system. The centre itself is built taking into
account principles of passive
Solar design to reduce energy
consumption in the building.
This is achieved by reducing
heat gain in summer,
encouraging effective
ventilation, natural cooling
and effective insulation to
prevent heat loss during the
winter, thus reducing both
heating and cooling costs.
Involvement of various players in the energy sector, such as local industries, the
private construction and operations contractors, Central Electricity Authority (CEA),
Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page

MNRE and others, has helped in increasing the capacity and capability of local
technical expertise and further sustain the development of Solar power in India in the
longer term.
Solar Industry in India gained momentum with the contribution of Private
organizations. Many Indian companies have planned major investments in this
industry. The government has approved projects of Chandradeep Solar (for an R&D
unit); Neotech Solutions; Photon Energy Systems; Surana Ventures; and RamTerra
Solar Pvt Ltd.
Tata Power and BP Solar joint venture had been the leading Solar Photovoltaic (PV)
manufacturers for the last many years. Moser Baer India Limited has entered the Solar
sector in a big way with both crystalline silicon cell technology and thin-film
technology.
Earlier this year, Khandelwal Solar Power Limited (KSPL), Reliance Industries, Titan
Energy Systems, Nano Tech Silicon India and XL Telecom & Energy also proposed to
invest in the Solar Industry. And Bollywood star Ajay Devagan wants to invest in
solar power plant in Gujarat.
Present Status of manufacturing of solar equipment in India...
As a result of the efforts made during the past quarter century, a number of devices
have been developed and have become commercially viable. These include Solar
Water Heaters, Solar Cookers, Solar Lanterns, Solar Street Lights, Solar Water
Pumps.
India has started wide Solar Photovoltaic Program for about 2 decades and has
installed an aggregate 1.3 million systems. However, now the focus of the 11th year
plan is on the grid connected power generation. India's Integrated Rural Energy
Program using Solar energy had served 300 districts and around 2,300 villages.
The production during 2007-08 (till December 2007) is estimated to be over 40 MWp
of Solar cells and 60 MWp of PV modules.

Solar Energy Uses…
We have always used solar energy as far back as humans have existed on this planet.
We know today, that there are multiple uses of solar energy. We use the solar energy
every day in many different ways. When we hang laundry outside to dry in the sun, we
are using the solar heat to do work, drying our clothes. Plants use the solar light to
make food. Animals eat plants for food. And as we learned, decaying plants hundreds
of millions of years ago produced the coal, oil and natural gas that we use today
Solar energy is the most readily available source of energy. It does not belong to
anybody and is, therefore, free. It is also the most important of the non-conventional
sources of energy because it is non-polluting and, therefore, helps in lessening the
greenhouse effect.
Solar energy has been used since prehistoric times, but in a most primitive manner.
Before 1970, some research and development was carried out in a few countries to
exploit solar energy more efficiently, but most of this work remained mainly
academic. After the dramatic rise in oil prices in the 1970s, several countries began to
formulate extensive research and development programmes to exploit solar energy.
When we hang out our clothes to dry in the sun, we use the
energy of the sun. In the same way, solar panels absorb the
energy of the sun to provide heat for cooking and for heating
water. Such systems are available in the market and are being
used in homes and factories.
In the next few years it is expected that millions of households
in the world will be using solar energy as the trends in USA and Japan show. In India
too, the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency and the Ministry of Non-
Conventional Energy Sources are formulating a programme to have solar energy in

India receives solar
energy equivalent to
over 5000 trillion
kWh/year, which is far more
than the total energy
consumption of the country.
13
more than a million households in the next few years. However, the people’s initiative
is essential if the programme is to be successful.
India is one of the few countries with long days and plenty of sunshine, especially in
the Thar desert region. This zone, having abundant solar energy available, is suitable
for harnessing solar energy for a number of applications. In areas with similar
intensity of solar radiation, solar energy could be easily harnessed. Solar thermal
energy is being used in India for heating water for both industrial and domestic
purposes. A 140 MW integrated solar power plant is to be set up in Jodhpur but the
initial expense incurred is still very high.
Solar energy can also be used to meet our electricity requirements. Through Solar
Photovoltaic (SPV) cells, solar radiation gets converted into DC electricity directly.
This electricity can either be used as it is or can be stored in the battery. This stored
electrical energy then can be used at night. SPV can be used for a number of
applications such as:
 domestic lighting
 street lighting
 village electrification

History of Solar Cooking…
Solar Cooking actually has some pretty early recorded beginnings starting with the
documented efforts of French-Swiss Physicist Horace de Saussure in 1767.
How Does Solar Cooking Work?
Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page
no.
18
Solar cooking is done by means of the suns UV rays.
A solar cooker lets the UV light rays in and then converts them to longer infrared
light rays that cannot escape. Infrared radiation has the right energy to make the
water, fat and protein molecules in food vibrate vigorously and heat up.
It is not the sun’s heat that cooks the food, nor is it the outside ambient temperature,
though this can somewhat affect the rate or time required to cook, but rather it is the
suns rays that are converted to heat energy that cook the food; and this heat
energy is then retained by the pot and the food by the means of a covering or lid.
This occurs in much the same way that a greenhouse retains heat or a car with its
windows rolled up. An effective solar cooker will use the energy of the sun to heat a
cooking vessel and efficiently retain the energy (heat) for maximum cooking
effectiveness.
Solar Panel Cooker Solar Parabolic cooker Solar Box Cooker
How solar cooking works can best be explained through the following mental
diagramming of the process as well as the above images.
First, you would need a darkened or blackened pot with a lid. This can be a pot such as
a cast iron Dutch oven, a black enameled roasting pan such as a chicken or turkey
roaster or any pot that you might blacken on the outside with a non-toxic,
weatherproof paint.Dark surfaces become very hot; they heat up more quickly than
shiny surfaces.
Then you will need to obtain a clear transparent covering such as a large glass bowl or
a durable plastic oven cooking bag. This will be used for retention of heat and will
Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page
no.
19
also allow the rays of the sun to be able to penetrate to the darkened cooking pot and
food, thus raising the cooking temperatures and preventing the heat from escaping.
Next you will need a material that will reflect extra sunlight towards the cooking
apparatus so as to concentrate the suns rays. This is usually accomplished in the form
of some type of reflecting surface such as mirrors, aluminum foil and buffed tin or
sheet metal. With the help of a reflecting surface you will be able to increase the
temperatures and to cook the food more rapidly.
...For maximum efficiency it is necessary to "track" the sun, or in other words adjust
your solar cooker so that it is directly towards the sun in order to be able to better
concentrate and absorb the suns rays.
This does not mean that you must continually stand beside the solar cooker the whole
cooking period. But it can mean adjusting the angle and direction every so often or
every set period, such as every one to two hours.
The more direct that the sun's rays are towards the food and cooking pot the greater
the energy (heat) capacity will be from the sun's converted rays.
Ideal cooking results when using a solar oven occur when the sun is bright and
uninhibited or unimpeded by clouds, shadows etc.
Cooking can be accomplished as well on days when the clouds are high and thin, but it
may slow things down a bit, and one would be wise to start a little earlier than usual.
Long, slow moderate solar cooking, such as with stew, chili, veggies etc. will do fine
under less than bright skies if you allow more time.
Baking on the other hand will take longer and the temperatures will not be as optimum
as could be, thus resulting in mixed outcomes with your baked goods

NUTRITION: Temperature controlled cooking retains vitamins, carbohydrates and
proteins. Uncontrolled temperature on LPG/CNG or wood leads to loss of approx.
80% of food value.
TASTE:
Solar cooking retains taste and flavor. Eating once one cannot forget the taste.
COMPLETE FOOD:
Solar cooking completes organic reactions enhancing flavor, aroma and taste. Organic
compounds strengthen our immune system and defend against bacteria and virus.
HEALTH:
The home maker does not
necessarily inhale poisonous
gases which emit while
cooking with LPG/CNG or
firewood. Recent studies
indicate that a food cooked
at moderate temperatures is
healthier.
ACCIDENT FREE:
There are no chances of
explosion or fire while using
Solar Cooker. It is very
dangerous for household
families with infants to use
LPG/CNG, wood or
microwave oven, as they are
highly accident prone.
ENVIRONMENT:
If 3% of the population starts using solar cooker, millions of tons of wood and
LPG/CNG can be saved annually correspondingly millions of tons of Carbon dioxide
emission are reduced.
COST:
Solar Cooker is cheaper than oven; running cost of Solar Cooker compared to
LPG/CNG, kerosene or fire wood is virtually nil and is maintenance free.
COSMIC ENERGY:
Solar cooked food is full of cosmic energies (life forces) which keeps you healthy and
less stressed.
The Suryapur’s solar cooker is aesthetic, convenient, and practical in use. It does
require frequent tracking at every 15 min.

to its full volume and is fluffy. The food is always tender and more palatable.
How long does it take to cook?
Cooking takes 0.5 hours. Cooking time depends on intensity of sunshine and the
nature and quantity of material to be cooked. Hard meat and pulses take some more
time to cook.
Does Suryapur solar parabolic cooker require special utensils?
No, dark pots with lid work best. Black pots absorb heat from sunlight and tight-fitting
lids help hold steam in the pot. Dark glass casserole dishes with lids also work well.
For baking cakes, breads cookies, and pies, dark cookie sheets and baking tins, work
best. Suryapur cooker is supplied with ISI marked pressure cooker.
Does food require constant stirring?
Solar parabolic cooker requires no stirring for boiling because there are no hot spots.
But for frying and cooking it require the stirring. The temperature rise is not gradual
as in solar box cooker.
Does Suryapur Solar cooker require maintenance?
Suryapur cooker is virtually maintenance free but the cleaning of reflector dish is
require to perform it well.

• Solar Cooking…
Working Principal: - All solar cookers work on the same principal. Solar cooking is
completed in the three basic steps.
First absorbing the solar energy by dark surface and gaining heat for cooking.
Retaining the heat by means of transparent cover which allows heat to enter in but not
allowing the heat to escape. It also prevents loss due to external environment. Finally
capturing the extra sunlight by means of extra reflecting surface to enhance the

geysers used in household sector. We are capable of manufacturing the solar water
heaters in a bulk capacity and deliver them within stipulated time frame. In few states
it has become mandatory to install solar water heaters in the premises. Loan facility is
also available in 2% interest rate from almost every financial institution.
How are solar panels made?
Discover the process of making a solar panel Making solar panels is a delicate process,

and it is for this reason that major solar advances did not come into play until the
lattermost quarter of the last century, when advances in semiconductors and
photovoltaic design allowed increasingly efficient and affordable solar cells to be
developed.
• Crystalline Silicon Solar Panels
The creation of solar panels
typically involves cutting
crystalline silicon into tiny disks
less than a centimeter thick. These
thin, wafer-like disks are then
carefully polished and treated to
repair and gloss any damage from
the slicing process. After
polishing, dopants (materials
added to alter an electrical charge
in a semiconductor or
photovoltaic solar cell) and metal
conductors are spread across each
disk. The conductors are aligned in a thin, grid-like matrix on the top of the solar
panel, and are spread in a flat, thin sheet on the side facing the earth.
To protect the solar panels after processing, a thin layer of cover glass is then bonded
to the top of the photovoltaic cell. After the bonding of protective glass, the nearly-

finished panel is attached to a subtrate by an expensive, thermally conductive cement.
The thermally conductive property of the cement keep the solar panel from becoming
overheated; any leftover energy that the solar panel is unable to convert to electricity
would otherwise overheat the unit and reduce the efficiency of the solar cells.
Despite these protective measures against the tendancy of solar panels to overheat, it is
vital that when installing a solar panel, additional steps should be taken to ensure the
solar panel is kept cool. Elevating the solar panel above ground (see solar panel
mounts) to let the airflow underneath cool the device.
• Amorphous Silicon Solar Panels
Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page
no.
37
Amorphous silicon solar panels are a powerful, emerging line of photovoltaics, that
differ in output, structure, and manufacture than traditional photovoltaics which use
crystalline silicon. Amorphous silicon solar cells, or A-si cells, are developed in a
continuous roll-to-roll process by vapor-depositing silicon alloys in multiple layers,
with each extremely thin layer specializing in the absorption of different parts of the
solar spectrum. The result is record-breaking efficiency and reduced materials cost (A-
si solar cells are typically thinner than their crystalline counterparts).
Some Amorphous Solar Panels also come with shade-resistant technology or multiple
circuits within the cells, so that if an entire row of cells is subject to complete shading,
the circuit won't be completely broken and some output can still be gained. This is
especially useful when installing solar panels on a boat.
The development process of Amorphous Silicon solar panels also renders them much
less susceptible to breakage during transport or installation. This can help reduce the
risk of damaging your significant investment in a photovoltaic system. Click here for
more more information on amorphous silicon solar panels.

 • 8. Solar energy is radiant energy that is produced by the sun. Everyday the sun radiates, or sends out, an enormous amount of energy. The sun radiates more energy in one second than people have used since the beginning of time! Where does the energy come from that constantly radiates from the sun? It comes from within the sun itself. Like other stars, the sun is a big ball of gases––mostly hydrogen and helium atoms. The hydrogen atoms in the sun’s core combine to form helium and generate energy in a process called nuclear fusion. During nuclear fusion, the sun’s extremely high pressure and temperature cause hydrogen atoms to come apart and their nuclei (the central cores of the atoms) to fuse or combine. Four hydrogen nuclei fuse to become one helium atom. But the helium atom contains less mass than the four hydrogen atoms that fused. Some matter is lost during nuclear fusion. The lost matter is emitted into space as radiant energy. It takes millions of years for the energy in the sun’s core to make its way to the solar surface, and then just a little over eight minutes to travel the 93 million miles to earth. The solar energy travels to the earth at a speed of 186,000 miles per second, the speed of light. Only a small portion of the energy radiated by the sun into space strikes the earth, one part in two billion. Yet this amount of energy is enormous. Every day enough energy strikes the United States to supply the nation’s energy needs for one and a half years! Where does all this energy go? About 15 percent of the sun’s energy that hits the earth is reflected back into space. Another 30 percent is used to evaporate water, which, lifted into the atmosphere, produces rainfall. Solar energy also is absorbed by plants, the land, and the oceans. The rest could be used to supply our energy needs. History of Solar Energy People have harnessed solar energy for centuries. As early as the 7th century B.C., people used simple magnifying glasses to concentrate the light of the sun into beams so hot they would cause wood to catch fire. More than 100 years ago in France, a scientist used heat from a solar collector to make steam to drive a steam engine. In the beginning of this century, scientists and engineers began researching ways to use solar energy in earnest. One important development was a remarkably efficient solar boiler invented by Charles Greeley Abbott, an American astrophysicist, in 1936. The solar water heater gained popularity at this time in Florida, California, and the Southwest. The industry started in the early 1920s and was in full swing just before World War II. This growth lasted until the mid-1950s when low-cost natural gas became the primary fuel for heating American homes. Solar Energy in the future Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page no. 8
 • 9. As the number of people longing for a cleaner environment grows, so does the solar industry. Solar cells are becoming increasingly cost-effective as more distributors enter the market and new technologies continue to offer more choice and new products. We might even see the end of the combustion age in our lifetime. Cars might soon be powered by new fuel cells that create electricity through chemical reaction. Screen-printed solar cells are expected to drive prices down even more. Roofing shingles are capturing the sun's rays and turning them into electricity! Solar panels are being mounted to the sides of houses when roof space is not an option. Pools are being heated with solar energy for a fraction of the price of conventional heaters. Solar Energy History has indeed come a long way and has a very positive future ahead. Solar Power in India… India's power sector has a total installed capacity of approximately 1,46,753 Megawatt (MW) of which 54% is coal-based, 25% hydro, 8% is renewable and the balance is the gas and nuclear-based. Power shortages are estimated at about 11% of total energy and 15% of peak capacity requirements and are likely to increase in the coming years. In the next 10 years, another 10,000 MW of capacity and investment of about Rs. 24 lakh crore are required. Fortunately, India lies in sunny regions of the world. Most parts of India receive 4-7 kWh of Solar radiation per square meter per day with 250-300 sunny days in a year. India has abundant solar resources, as it receives about 3000 hours of sunshine every year, equivalent to over 5,000 trillion kWh. India can easily utilize the solar energy or Solar Power. Today the contribution of Solar power with an installed capacity of 9.84 MW, is a fraction (< 0.1 percent) of the total renewable energy installed 13, 242.41(as on 31st October 2008 by MNRE). Solar power generation has lagged behind other sources like wind, small hydropower, biomass etc. But now realizing the potential of Solar energy, Prime Minister of India unveiled a National Climate Change Action Plan in June 2008. The plan will be implemented through eight missions with main focus on Solar energy in the total energy mix of the country. Government Authorities… Development of alternate energy has been part of India's strategy for expanding energy supply and meeting decentralized energy needs of the rural sector. The strategy is administered through India's Ministry of New Renewable Energy (MNRE), Energy development agencies in the various States, and the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA). Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page no. 9
 • 10. MNRE – Ministry of New Renewable Energy is the nodal Ministry of the Government of India for all matters relating to new and renewable energy. In 1982 Department of Non- conventional Energy Sources (DNES) was created to develop and deploy new and renewable energy for supplementing the energy requirements of the country. In 1992, DNES became the Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources. In October 2006, the Ministry was re-christened as the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The Ministry has been facilitating the implementation of broad spectrum programmes including harnessing renewable power, renewable energy to rural areas for lighting, cooking and motive power, use of renewable energy in urban, industrial and commercial applications and development of alternate fuels and applications. In addition, it supports research, design and development of new and renewable energy technologies, products and services. IREDA – Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency is a Public Limited Government Company established on 11th March, 1987, under the administrative control of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to promote, develop and extend financial assistance for renewable energy and energy efficiency/conservation projects. IREDA has been notified as a & ldquo;Public Financial Institution & rdquo; under section 4 & lsquo;A’ of the Companies Act, 1956 and registered as Non- Banking Financial Company (NFBC) with Reserve Bank of India (RBI). SEC – The Solar Energy Centre (SEC), established in 1982, is a dedicated unit of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India for development of Solar energy technologies and to promote its applications through product development. The institute was set up with a view to encourage research in the field of Solar technology as a viable alternate energy system. The centre itself is built taking into account principles of passive Solar design to reduce energy consumption in the building. This is achieved by reducing heat gain in summer, encouraging effective ventilation, natural cooling and effective insulation to prevent heat loss during the winter, thus reducing both heating and cooling costs. Involvement of various players in the energy sector, such as local industries, the private construction and operations contractors, Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. • 11. MNRE and others, has helped in increasing the capacity and capability of local technical expertise and further sustain the development of Solar power in India in the longer term. Solar Industry in India gained momentum with the contribution of Private organizations. Many Indian companies have planned major investments in this industry. The government has approved projects of Chandradeep Solar (for an R&D unit); Neotech Solutions; Photon Energy Systems; Surana Ventures; and RamTerra Solar Pvt Ltd. Tata Power and BP Solar joint venture had been the leading Solar Photovoltaic (PV) manufacturers for the last many years. Moser Baer India Limited has entered the Solar sector in a big way with both crystalline silicon cell technology and thin-film technology. Earlier this year, Khandelwal Solar Power Limited (KSPL), Reliance Industries, Titan Energy Systems, Nano Tech Silicon India and XL Telecom & Energy also proposed to invest in the Solar Industry. And Bollywood star Ajay Devagan wants to invest in solar power plant in Gujarat. Present Status of manufacturing of solar equipment in India... As a result of the efforts made during the past quarter century, a number of devices have been developed and have become commercially viable. These include Solar Water Heaters, Solar Cookers, Solar Lanterns, Solar Street Lights, Solar Water Pumps. India has started wide Solar Photovoltaic Program for about 2 decades and has installed an aggregate 1.3 million systems. However, now the focus of the 11th year plan is on the grid connected power generation. India's Integrated Rural Energy Program using Solar energy had served 300 districts and around 2,300 villages. The production during 2007-08 (till December 2007) is estimated to be over 40 MWp of Solar cells and 60 MWp of PV modules. • 13. Solar Energy Uses… We have always used solar energy as far back as humans have existed on this planet. We know today, that there are multiple uses of solar energy. We use the solar energy every day in many different ways. When we hang laundry outside to dry in the sun, we are using the solar heat to do work, drying our clothes. Plants use the solar light to make food. Animals eat plants for food. And as we learned, decaying plants hundreds of millions of years ago produced the coal, oil and natural gas that we use today Solar energy is the most readily available source of energy. It does not belong to anybody and is, therefore, free. It is also the most important of the non-conventional sources of energy because it is non-polluting and, therefore, helps in lessening the greenhouse effect. Solar energy has been used since prehistoric times, but in a most primitive manner. Before 1970, some research and development was carried out in a few countries to exploit solar energy more efficiently, but most of this work remained mainly academic. After the dramatic rise in oil prices in the 1970s, several countries began to formulate extensive research and development programmes to exploit solar energy. When we hang out our clothes to dry in the sun, we use the energy of the sun. In the same way, solar panels absorb the energy of the sun to provide heat for cooking and for heating water. Such systems are available in the market and are being used in homes and factories. In the next few years it is expected that millions of households in the world will be using solar energy as the trends in USA and Japan show. In India too, the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency and the Ministry of Non- Conventional Energy Sources are formulating a programme to have solar energy in Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page no. India receives solar energy equivalent to over 5000 trillion kWh/year, which is far more than the total energy consumption of the country. 13
 • 14. more than a million households in the next few years. However, the people’s initiative is essential if the programme is to be successful. India is one of the few countries with long days and plenty of sunshine, especially in the Thar desert region. This zone, having abundant solar energy available, is suitable for harnessing solar energy for a number of applications. In areas with similar intensity of solar radiation, solar energy could be easily harnessed. Solar thermal energy is being used in India for heating water for both industrial and domestic purposes. A 140 MW integrated solar power plant is to be set up in Jodhpur but the initial expense incurred is still very high. Solar energy can also be used to meet our electricity requirements. Through Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) cells, solar radiation gets converted into DC electricity directly. This electricity can either be used as it is or can be stored in the battery. This stored electrical energy then can be used at night. SPV can be used for a number of applications such as:  domestic lighting  street lighting  village electrification Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page no. History of Solar Cooking… Solar Cooking actually has some pretty early recorded beginnings starting with the documented efforts of French-Swiss Physicist Horace de Saussure in 1767. How Does Solar Cooking Work? Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page no. 18
 • 19. Solar cooking is done by means of the suns UV rays. A solar cooker lets the UV light rays in and then converts them to longer infrared light rays that cannot escape. Infrared radiation has the right energy to make the water, fat and protein molecules in food vibrate vigorously and heat up. It is not the sun’s heat that cooks the food, nor is it the outside ambient temperature, though this can somewhat affect the rate or time required to cook, but rather it is the suns rays that are converted to heat energy that cook the food; and this heat energy is then retained by the pot and the food by the means of a covering or lid. This occurs in much the same way that a greenhouse retains heat or a car with its windows rolled up. An effective solar cooker will use the energy of the sun to heat a cooking vessel and efficiently retain the energy (heat) for maximum cooking effectiveness. Solar Panel Cooker Solar Parabolic cooker Solar Box Cooker How solar cooking works can best be explained through the following mental diagramming of the process as well as the above images. First, you would need a darkened or blackened pot with a lid. This can be a pot such as a cast iron Dutch oven, a black enameled roasting pan such as a chicken or turkey roaster or any pot that you might blacken on the outside with a non-toxic, weatherproof paint.Dark surfaces become very hot; they heat up more quickly than shiny surfaces. Then you will need to obtain a clear transparent covering such as a large glass bowl or a durable plastic oven cooking bag. This will be used for retention of heat and will Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page no. 19
 • 20. also allow the rays of the sun to be able to penetrate to the darkened cooking pot and food, thus raising the cooking temperatures and preventing the heat from escaping. Next you will need a material that will reflect extra sunlight towards the cooking apparatus so as to concentrate the suns rays. This is usually accomplished in the form of some type of reflecting surface such as mirrors, aluminum foil and buffed tin or sheet metal. With the help of a reflecting surface you will be able to increase the temperatures and to cook the food more rapidly. ...For maximum efficiency it is necessary to "track" the sun, or in other words adjust your solar cooker so that it is directly towards the sun in order to be able to better concentrate and absorb the suns rays. This does not mean that you must continually stand beside the solar cooker the whole cooking period. But it can mean adjusting the angle and direction every so often or every set period, such as every one to two hours. The more direct that the sun's rays are towards the food and cooking pot the greater the energy (heat) capacity will be from the sun's converted rays. Ideal cooking results when using a solar oven occur when the sun is bright and uninhibited or unimpeded by clouds, shadows etc. Cooking can be accomplished as well on days when the clouds are high and thin, but it may slow things down a bit, and one would be wise to start a little earlier than usual. Long, slow moderate solar cooking, such as with stew, chili, veggies etc. will do fine under less than bright skies if you allow more time. Baking on the other hand will take longer and the temperatures will not be as optimum as could be, thus resulting in mixed outcomes with your baked goods WHY SURYAPUR SOLAR PARABOLIC COOKER ONLY??? Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page no. 20
 • 21. NUTRITION: Temperature controlled cooking retains vitamins, carbohydrates and proteins. Uncontrolled temperature on LPG/CNG or wood leads to loss of approx. 80% of food value. TASTE: Solar cooking retains taste and flavor. Eating once one cannot forget the taste. COMPLETE FOOD: Solar cooking completes organic reactions enhancing flavor, aroma and taste. Organic compounds strengthen our immune system and defend against bacteria and virus. HEALTH: The home maker does not necessarily inhale poisonous gases which emit while cooking with LPG/CNG or firewood. Recent studies indicate that a food cooked at moderate temperatures is healthier. ACCIDENT FREE: There are no chances of explosion or fire while using Solar Cooker. It is very dangerous for household families with infants to use LPG/CNG, wood or microwave oven, as they are highly accident prone. • 36. and it is for this reason that major solar advances did not come into play until the lattermost quarter of the last century, when advances in semiconductors and photovoltaic design allowed increasingly efficient and affordable solar cells to be developed. • Crystalline Silicon Solar Panels The creation of solar panels typically involves cutting crystalline silicon into tiny disks less than a centimeter thick. These thin, wafer-like disks are then carefully polished and treated to repair and gloss any damage from the slicing process. After polishing, dopants (materials added to alter an electrical charge in a semiconductor or photovoltaic solar cell) and metal conductors are spread across each disk. The conductors are aligned in a thin, grid-like matrix on the top of the solar panel, and are spread in a flat, thin sheet on the side facing the earth. To protect the solar panels after processing, a thin layer of cover glass is then bonded to the top of the photovoltaic cell. After the bonding of protective glass, the nearly- Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page no. 36

The thermally conductive property of the cement keep the solar panel from becoming overheated; any leftover energy that the solar panel is unable to convert to electricity would otherwise overheat the unit and reduce the efficiency of the solar cells. Despite these protective measures against the tendancy of solar panels to overheat, it is vital that when installing a solar panel, additional steps should be taken to ensure the solar panel is kept cool. Elevating the solar panel above ground (see solar panel mounts) to let the airflow underneath cool the device. • Amorphous Silicon Solar Panels Suryapur Solar Energy…………………………………………………. Page no. 37
 • 38. Amorphous silicon solar panels are a powerful, emerging line of photovoltaics, that differ in output, structure, and manufacture than traditional photovoltaics which use crystalline silicon. Amorphous silicon solar cells, or A-si cells, are developed in a continuous roll-to-roll process by vapor-depositing silicon alloys in multiple layers, with each extremely thin layer specializing in the absorption of different parts of the solar spectrum. The result is record-breaking efficiency and reduced materials cost (A- si solar cells are typically thinner than their crystalline counterparts). Some Amorphous Solar Panels also come with shade-resistant technology or multiple circuits within the cells, so that if an entire row of cells is subject to complete shading, the circuit won't be completely broken and some output can still be gained. This is especially useful when installing solar panels on a boat. The development process of Amorphous Silicon solar panels also renders them much less susceptible to breakage during transport or installation. This can help reduce the risk of damaging your significant investment in a photovoltaic system. Click here for more more information on amorphous silicon solar panels.
