Presentation for Mile High PMI Workshop on November 15, 2008 Abstract: There are always people who want agile projects to fail. This will probably be the case until agile is the preferred process methodology used for projects. Are you one of them? In this workshop Bob Hartman will give participants a how-to guide for causing agile process failure. Attendees will learn various failure modes and how to cause them. There will be group discussions and exercises exploring how the failure modes can manifest themselves in real projects. At the end of this workshop each attendee should have the ability to cause agile project failure in a variety of ways and under a variety of conditions. Obviously the first paragraph is a bit tongue-in-cheek. Hopefully project managers do not want agile projects to fail, but they need to know how they could fail. This knowledge will translate into an ability to recognize the failure modes and take corrective action. Interestingly, many of the agile project failure modes are also failure modes in other project process methodologies. All project managers on agile projects or in organizations that are considering using an agile process should attend this workshop. Project managers in organizations which typically struggle with projects may also gain insight into their project failure modes.

This was presented at the IA Summit in Phoenix, AZ. Talk Abstract: Is your usability testing always attached to a design project? And does it require a fair amount of planning, time, and resources to accomplish? Time for the designer to come up with his business questions and create a few prototypes; time for the researcher to develop an applicable discussion guide; time for the moderator to conduct the interviews, create and review the transcripts, make sense of it all, and finally come out with some solid findings and recommendations? If so, you’re in the norm. But there’s a better way that can enable you to get more insight quicker, cheaper, and with fewer people and headaches. This talk will describe how, with a little planning and a few innovative techniques, you can conduct regular, fast-turnaround usability interviews with a shoestring staff and budget. You can provide timely feedback to designers, uncover surprising problems with your site, and capture rich customer quotes – and do this week after week. By scheduling regular customer interviews regardless of the project timing, you can start to condition your designers and project managers to expect to be able to get customer input whenever they want. And exploring customers’ “native tasks” can give insights about parts of the site you and your designers would never even think to ask about. Finally, the unique debrief methodology will greatly simplify the analysis process, enabling you to quickly produce Findings and Recommendations that will be already bought-into by the team. This talk is aimed at IA’s, Usability professionals, and designers who want to learn how to get more customer input into their designs without the hassle, time, and expense of traditional usability interviews. You will walk away from this talk with a practical plan-of-action and some new techniques for conducting rapid-turnaround usability testing.

Dr. Vu Nguyen is a Director of Software Engineering at QASymphony and a Lecturer at the University of Science, Vietnam National University. At both places, he is involved in developing software tools and performing research in software estimation, testing, maintenance, and process. Quality assurance management is an essential component of the software development lifecycle. To ensure quality, applicability, and usefulness of a product, development teams must spend considerable time and resources testing, which makes the estimation of the software testing effort, a critical activity. In this talk, we present an approach, namely V3 Analysis, to estimating the size of software testing work. The approach measures the size of a software test case based on its checkpoints, preconditions and test data, as well as the types of testing. We also introduce a supporting toolkit that you can use to estimate testing effort quickly for your projects.

Mobile devices are also used differently compared to traditional computing platforms. Due to this mobility devices and platforms throw up a new kind of challenges to testing fraternity.
