1. Task 2
How does your product represent particular social groups?
1. The social groups represented in our thriller/horror opening sequence,
the gender is specifically males and the age group represented would be
teenagers. The characters appear to be middle class as the location of the
film appears to be a nice and wealthy area also the house seen in the clip
is pleasant. Also the ethnicity of the characters is white British. The
characters of our film are similar to lots of different other thriller films
the ethnicity is usually white British and males are mostly used as actors
in thriller/horror films especially Christopher William Trim who plays
the sinister kidnapper/abductor.
2. We have constructed these representations by the effects used which
help make the shots look more dull and spooky which is used a lot in
thrillers/horrors. The shots with effect bring a whole different view of
the images without the effects the film would look basic and our
representations would not appear as well as they do with these special
effects. Whilst looking at the mise en scene is becomes easy to identify
the situation the props used where the little girls shoes which shows that
the little girl which was kidnapped had been at the house., it made the
film more realistic. The sounds were also a great impact as to how we
represented our film, with the sounds we added it became a lot clearer to
the audience what the film was about, it also created a suspense effect for
the audience.
3. The representation of the characters are typical in a real film as the outfit
they was wearing was ordinary everyday outfit which is usually what
characters use in horror films as they are discrete. At first it doesn’t
appear clear who is the ‘bad guy’ but then it becomes apparent by his
actions and body language. In minority report the character similarly
wears ordinary clothes, which indicates he could be anyone and that
brings a unique mystery factor to the film. In this image you can see the
character wearing ordinary clothes, which makes the characters acting
so vital to ensure the audience know which character he is playing. In
minority report the main character plays a sinister male, as does chris
is our film. There are a few siliarities which we can compare such as
their body langage which is the way they move, both of the characters
appear to be controlling and powerful this also comes across in their
facial expressions as they look very concentrated in the screenshots
below. Their outsifts could also be identified as similar as they are
wearing ordinary clothes which is typically seen in horror movies
hwere the bad guy is only noticable by their actions not thei clothing.
However, Christopher Trim is wearing a long trench style coat and
appears to be upper-class.
2. 4. In our film we are reinforcing rather than challenging stereotypes. For
example the male actors are active i.e doing stuff, which is a typical
representation in many thriller films with male characters. Also the
typical thriller/horror would present a female as the victim although this
is not seen clearly in the film as its only a short clip, the story line is of a
little girl who got abducted and her father attempts to rescue her.
However we could ay that there is a positive representation of fathers,
which is to care for their child, which challenges a common stereotype of
absent young fathers.
