DEFICIENCY DISEASES

                      1
INTRODUCTION
THE MAIN CAUSE OF DEFICIENCY
DISEASE IN OUR COUNTRY IS
POVERTY.MANY PEOPLE OF OUR
COUNTRY ARE NOT ABLE TO BUY

                               1
GOOD QUALITY OF FOOD AND
FOOD ITEMS IN SUFFICIENT
QUANTITES.IF THIS CONTINUES
THEY WILL BECOME WEAK AND
FALL ILL.THIS MOSTLY AFFECTS
THE GROWING CHINDREN .
DEFICIENCY DUE TO
            CARBOHYDRATES
1. CARBOHYDRATES ARE THE CHIEF
SOURCE OF ENERGY FOR THE BODY.

2. THE ENERGY PRODUCED BY
CARBOHYDRATES ARE USED BY

                                       1
     OUR BODY TO PERFORM VARIOUS
TASKS.

3. DEFICIENCY OF SUFFICIENT
CARBOHYDRATES LEADS TO

• BODY WEAKNESS

• LOSS OF STAMINA
DEFICIENCY DUE TO
          PROTEINS
PORTIENS ARE BODY-BUILDING FOOD. THEY
CAN CAUSE SERIOUS DISEASE,LIKE
KWASHIORKOR AND MARASMIC TO SMALL
CHILDREN, IF SUFFICIENT PROTIENS ARE
NOT GIVEN TO THEM.THIS IS THE REASON

                                         1
WHY SMALL CHILDREN ARE ADVISED TO TAKE
PROTEIN-RICH DIET.

FOR EXAMPLE – MILK
                PULSES
                 EGG
                 MEAT
                 FISH.

WEAK LEGS
ANAEMIA
LOSS OF APPETITE
GROSSLY UNDERWEIGHT
MENTAL RETARDATION
REDUCED RESISTANCE TO
 DISEASES
DEFICIENCY DUE TO VITAMIN
VITAMINS ARE
ERQUIRED BY OUR
BODY IN VERY SMALL
QUANTITES FOR
PROPER FUNCTIONING

                            1
OF OUR BODY.
VITAMINS HELP IN
KEEPING OUR
• EYES
• BONES
• TEETH AND GUMS
  HEALTHY
TABLE OF DEFICIENCY DUE
        TO VITAMIN
VITAMINS DISEASES SYMPTOMS

VITAMIN A NIGHT BLINDNESS POOR NIGHT VISION,LOSS OF NIGHT VISION

                                                                     1
VITAMIN B BERI-BERI NERVOUSNESS,PARALYSIS,WEAK MUSCLES

VITAMIN C SCURVY BLEEDING OF GUMS ,SWELLING OF JOINTS

VITAMIN D RICKETS WEAK BONES,DECAYING TEETH

VITAMIN K HAEMORRHAGE CLOTTING OF BLOOD AFFECTED
DEFICIENCY DUE TO
        MINERALS
MINERALS ARE
ALSO
 REQUIRED IN
SMALL QUANTITES

                        1
BUT ARE EQUALLY
 IMPORTANT FOR
PROPER
FUNCTIONING OF
OUR
 BODY PARTS.

Alexander and Porus
India of the ancient times was made up of several small countries. Each country had a
king. India being very rich in agriculture as well as minerals several people tried to
conquer India. Alexander the great was one of them. He was the king of Macedonia in
Greece. On his way to India he defeated all the kingdoms in the present Arabia. He
entered India along with his troops riding on horses. One of the first kingdoms on his
was Punarnava. Porus was the great king of Punarnava. The army of Porus consisted of
elephants. To reach Punarnava Alexander had to cross the river Chenab. Understanding
the great strength of Alexander, Porus went and met all the kings of neighbouring
countries. One of them was the powerful king Ambi. Ambi not only refused to help
Alexander but sought the help of Alexander to conquer the kingdom of Porus.

                                                                                          1
Since he was not able to get any help, Porus marched along with his powerful elephant
battalion to the shores of Cheenab. Alexander was dependent on his horse battalion. On
that night without causing any doubt to the army of Porus, Alexander marched down
stream by the shores of Cheenab and managed to cross to the other shore and at the
least expected time attacked the army of Porus. Alexander used spears javelins and
arrows straight on the elephants. This made them confused and they threw out their
drivers and started attacking the army of Porus itself. Thus Porus was defeated. He was
captured and chained and brought before Alexander
Alexander asked him, “Porus, how do you want me to treat you?”
Porus replied, “Like a king.”
Alexander was greatly impressed by the valour of Porus and not only released him but
gave him back his kingdom.
