2. INT. EMILY’S APARTMENT. MAGIC
EMILY sits at her small kitchen table, pen in one hand, head
resting in the other. Her task is monotonous and she can
barely keep her eyes open. RYAN appears behind her and he
places his hands on her shoulders.
Ryan is a nice looking guy. He’s clean shaven with short,
well kept, hair, and his clothes say relaxed but not casual.
This is in stark contrast to Emily. Everything about her
screams uptight. She has her hair up with clothes she must
have worn to work earlier. She hasn’t allowed herself the
comfort of changing after work.
RYAN
I have to go.
Emily perks up.
EMILY
Already, but you just got here.
She doesn’t take her eyes off her work.
RYAN
Em, I’ve been here for three hours.
Besides, all the guys are going to
be there soon, and as much as I
love to watch you work...
EMILY
I’m sorry, I really thought I would
be finished already. I’ve just
been so tired.
Emily runs her eyes and gets up from the table.
RYAN
You need a break. All this work is
leaving you exhausted. Go out
tonight. Call Sam or something.
The two of you can unwind, but get
some sleep. You’ll work better if
your rested.
EMILY
I know, it’s just, this is to
important.
RYAN
Hey, look at me, (he grabs her
shoulders) you’re going to be
great.
3. 2.
EMILY
You don’t know that.
RYAN
I do, because I know you, and I
know how hard you’ve worked.
EMILY
I’m sorry, I really wanted to be
done by now.
Ryan starts to back away.
It’s fine.
got to go.
RYAN
It really is, but I’ve
EMILY
You boys have fun. Don’t do
anything you wouldn’t do if I were
there.
Ryan stops at the door.
RYAN
(sarcastic)
Oh, in that case I’ll be back in
like twenty minutes.
Whatever.
EMILY
Ryan smiles and starts to close the door.
Ryan!
luck?
EMILY (CONT’D)
You’re not going to wish me
RYAN
Your thing’s not till Monday, Em.
I’ll see you before that.
EMILY
The preparation’s the most
important part.
RYAN
Good luck with your preparations
then. Now, I’m going to go get
lucky.
He starts to close the door, but quickly swings it back open.
4. 3.
RYAN (CONT’D)
(ineloquent)
Poker. You know what I meant.
Emily smiles and shakes her head. She turns back to the
papers on the table. Only a moment passes before the door
bursts open and Ryan comes rushing back in.
He is wearing an oversized red sweatshirt and faded jeans.
His hair has been completely mucked up and his face is no
longer clean shaved.
EMILY
Oh my God! You scared me.
are you doing?
What
Ryan rushes toward her and grabs her by the hand.
clutches her chest.
She
RYAN
You need to see this.
EMILY
Stop it, that hurts.
He drags her over to the window facing the parking lot.
RYAN
Who is that?
He points down for her to look and see Ryan. The same Ryan
that she had just been talking with. The Ryan who was
dressed well and clean shaven. Not the Ryan she is standing
with now.
EMILY
I don’t understand.
He releases her hand and she starts to back away from him.
Her hands still clutching her chest.
RYAN
That’s what I want to know.
to find you and saw him.
I came
EMILY
This isn’t, I can’t...
She reaches back for the couch and lowers herself to the
ground.
Emily!
RYAN
Emily?
5. 4.
He races forward and helps her to the ground.
EMILY
(breathing heavily)
I just need to catch my breath.
Emily loses consciousness.
INT. EMILY’S APARTMENT. NIGHT
EMILY is lying face down on her couch. The room is dark when
she finally stirs. RYAN is sitting by her.
RYAN
Good, you’re awake.
EMILY
Did I fall asleep?
RYAN
You fainted, actually.
Her eyes pop open and she sees RYAN with the red sweatshirt.
It takes her a second to catch up, but she quickly remembers
all that happened. In one movement, she jumps up from the
couch and swings around the backside, opposite Ryan.
RYAN (CONT’D)
Wait, I can explain.
Can you?
EMILY
RYAN
Well, no, not really, but I’m not
going to hurt you.
EMILY
How do I know that?
RYAN
Because I would have already.
EMILY
(sarcastic)
That’s very reassuring.
Emily reaches back by the kitchen and grabs a knife from the
counter. Ryan’s body language changes from alert and
defensive to calm and collected.
6. 5.
RYAN
It’s me. You know me.
ever hurt you?
Would I
Emily’s posture relaxes a little.
EMILY
How do I know it’s you?
RYAN
I don’t know, but believe me when I
tell you that I want to know what’s
happening as much as you do.
EMILY
I doubt that.
RYAN
You’re not the one this is
happening to.
EMILY
The double of my boyfriend broke
into my apartment and assaulted me.
How is it that this isn’t happening
to me?
She puts her free hand over her chest.
RYAN
I’m sorry, you’re right, but you’re
not the one who can’t remember
anything.
EMILY
What’s that?
RYAN
I don’t remember anything before
this morning.
EMILY
Yeah, that’s not creepy at all.
RYAN
Emily, please. You’re the only one
I can turn to. I need your help.
EMILY
Fine, but I’m keeping this.
She holds up the knife.
7. 6.
Fine.
RYAN
EMILY
Why do you think I can help?
RYAN
Since this morning, my memory has
been coming back little by little.
When I saw you earlier I got a
boost, or something, and a ton of
memories came flooding back.
EMILY
(sarcastic)
That’s sweet. How does that mean I
can help?
RYAN
I think you can help me remember.
That’s it?
to do?
EMILY
That’s all you want me
RYAN
That’s a lot.
EMILY
What about this double thing? Do
you remember something about that?
No.
RYAN
EMILY
Because that’s kind of weird.
RYAN
You basically know everything I do
now.
EMILY
Does your head hurt?
What, no.
RYAN
Should it?
EMILY
I don’t know, but I’m thinking it
would if you were hit in the head
or something. I’m just trying to
figure out what this could be, and
now I don’t think it’s head trauma.
8. 7.
EMILY (CONT'D)
There’s just a million other things
it could be.
RYAN
A million, huh?
EMILY
Why not? You could be a clone, or
a shape-shifter. Maybe, you were
tracking your doppelganger and,
just before you could make contact,
you were struck with memory loss.
RYAN
Come on, Emily, this is serious.
EMILY
I am serious. There is no
realistic explanation as to why
your here right now, so either
you’re something weird or I’m
dreaming. I’m leaning toward I’m
dreaming. I’ve been pretty tired
lately. I’m sure that can cause
weird dreams.
RYAN
You’re not dreaming.
EMILY
Said my dream.
RYAN
I know you’re not, because I’m not
a dream.
EMILY
Oh (she jumps). Am I dead? It
happened. I’m dead aren’t I.
She sits down on the couch.
RYAN
No, You’re not dead.
EMILY
(sarcastic)
Convincing argument.
RYAN
I’m his twin.
Ryan Sits down next to her.
9. 8.
EMILY
What?
RYAN
It’s a realistic argument. I found
my twin, but I lost my memory
before I could meet him.
EMILY
Yeah. (Pause) No. How would you
know me or where I lived.
RYAN
I found out before I lost my
memory, and for some reason that’s
what I remember.
EMILY
That’s sweet and all, but I don’t
think...
RYAN
...Time travel.
EMILY
Oh, good one. I like that.
RYAN
No, I think that’s what this is,
seriously
What?
EMILY
How?
RYAN
I don’t know yet. It’s just a
feeling. I’m not from now.
EMILY
Then you’re only from tomorrow,
because you’re not that old.
Thank you.
RYAN
EMILY
And you need to get that time
travel device fixed. Coming back
with no memory is super unhelpful.
RYAN
That’s a good point.
10. 9.
Thank you.
EMILY
RYAN
Why would I lose my memory going
back in time?
EMILY
If you went back in time.
RYAN
I’m pretty sure.
Sure,
part.
It fits.
EMILY
besides the time travel
RYAN
Who’s that?
Ryan is looking at a picture across the room of Emily with a
young man.
EMILY
Jealous much?
RYAN
I recognize him.
She watches him for a second as he tries to figure it out.
EMILY
He’s my brother. That’s how we
met, or how I met your twin anyway.
At a bar.
RYAN
EMILY
You remember that?
RYAN
Sort of. It’s hard to explain.
picked you up at a bar?
Hardly.
EMILY
That’s just how we met.
RYAN
I remember differently.
EMILY
Does this mean you’re getting
you’re memory back?
I
11. 10.
RYAN
Some of it. Can we go?
EMILY
Go where, to the bar?
RYAN
Sorry, that’s probably asking too
much.
EMILY
No, it’s just that I’m not sure...
RYAN
...I get it. Don’t worry. I’m
just trying to think of things to
jump start my memory.
EMILY
I’m sorry, I’ve just got this
presentation on Monday that I have
to work on.
RYAN
The Atwater account.
EMILY
How did you know that?
RYAN
I don’t know.
EMILY
So if you really are from the
future you would know if I get it.
Do I?
RYAN
(smiling)
I don’t know, sorry.
me?
You believe
EMILY
No, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. Do
you remember that trip to the lake?
She puts the knife down and gets up to look at another
picture. Ryan’s eyes fall on the knife on the table.
RYAN
Which lake?
Guess not.
EMILY
12. 11.
Ryan puts his head down.
RYAN
Trust me, I wish I could remember.
Emily sees him with his head in his hands.
EMILY
You know what, let’s do it.
He lifts his head.
RYAN
Are you sure?
EMILY
Why not? Sitting around here’s not
going to do either one of us any
good, and you need to get your
memory back.
INT. BAR. NIGHT
There is only a few people at the bar.
secluded place near the back.
Anything?
EMILY and RYAN pick a
EMILY
Ryan smiles.
RYAN
Nothing substantial, but I’ll let
you know.
EMILY
So, what do you think this is all
about?
What?
RYAN
She gives him a look of disappointment.
RYAN (CONT’D)
The time travel?
EMILY
I’m just saying, what’s the point
of going back in time if you can’t
remember anything from before you
got there.
13. 12.
RYAN
It’s a good point. I don’t know.
My memory’s coming back, though.
Maybe I figured I’ll get it all
back eventually.
EMILY
Sure, we got time.
Funny.
RYAN
EMILY
What if you were a time traveling
secret agent and you were attacked,
which is why you don’t remember,
and the only time you could escape
to was this one.
RYAN
I don’t think I’ve done this
before.
EMILY
It’s just that, when you
about it, what makes now
important. If this is a
thing why would you come
think
so
one time
back here?
RYAN
This is so frustrating. It’s like
the answer is right out in front of
me, and all I have to do is grab
it.
EMILY
This isn’t working.
have another idea.
Come on, I
She pulls him up from the bar.
EXT. PARK. NIGHT
EMILY pulls RYAN by the hand over to one of the swings. She
positions him at just the right spot and moves in front of
him. To his surprise, she plants a kiss on him.
EMILY
How about now?
RYAN
Let me guess, first kiss?
14. 13.
She sighs and drops her shoulders.
EMILY
Nothing? That should have done
something.
RYAN
Hold on. I think it’s working.
it again.
Do
She goes in for another kiss, but notices he’s smiling.
Before she reaches him she pulls back and slaps him on the
shoulder.
Funny.

Ryan shrugs. He still has a

She clutches his arms, but he

He notices that she has him in an

You’re them most beautiful thing
I’ve ever seen.
Emily blushes and let’s go of him.
he can’t take them off of her.
She avoids his eyes, but
EMILY
All right, fella, it was just a
little kiss. Let’s not get crazy
now.
She pulls away from him.
15. 14.
RYAN
This is so weird.

seeing you for the

I’ve been with

but it’s so good
EMILY
You remember. That’s great, so
what is it? Time travel spy?
RYAN
You.
EMILY
Come again.
RYAN
I came back for you.
EMILY
What’s that mean?
RYAN
I don’t know. I don’t have all the
pieces yet.
EMILY
But you remember.
Yes.
RYAN
We can go home now.
EMILY
Are you sure? Maybe you’ll
remember the rest of it.
I’m sure.
RYAN
I remember enough.
INT. EMILY’S APARTMENT. NIGHT
EMILY opens her front door and walks in. RYAN follows behind
her slowly. She puts her keys down on the counter and he
sits down in the living room.
EMILY
Are you okay?
Yeah, why?
RYAN
16. 15.
EMILY
You haven’t said anything since the
park.
RYAN
Just thinking, I guess.
EMILY
About what?
He stands up.
RYAN
Can I get some water?
Sure.
EMILY
She gets a glass and pours him some water.
EMILY (CONT’D)
What have you been thinking so hard
about?
RYAN
I don’t belong here.
EMILY
Well, sure, you’re from the future.
RYAN
That’s not what I mean. I can’t
shake it, but it’s definitely a bad
feeling.
They are both standing in the kitchen.
the table with her papers on it.
Emily looks over to
EMILY
You don’t happen to remember
anything more about my account, do
you? Do I get it?
Ryan puts the glass down aggressively.
RYAN
There you go with that again.
Emily is surprised, and Ryan begins to clean up some spilled
water.
RYAN (CONT’D)
I don’t know why, but it annoys me.
It’s not that important.
17. 16.
EMILY
How can it not be that important?
This will be huge for me.
RYAN
It’s not important.
She begins to smile.
EMILY
I think I understand now. I get
the job, and it takes me away from
you. You’re jealous.
RYAN
That’s not funny.
EMILY
It’s a little funny, and how would
you know? You don’t even remember.
Ryan cracks a smile.
RYAN
I’m not jealous.
EMILY
It’s convenient you’re forgetting
that part.
Whatever.
RYAN
He continues to stare at her.
What?
Emily blushes.
EMILY
RYAN
I love you.
Her smile fades as she watches him. Sitting across from her
with a giant smile on his face staring back at her. She
looks away and gets up from the couch.
RYAN (CONT’D)
What is it? What did I say?
EMILY
It’s nothing.
He gets up to follow her.
18. 17.
Tell me.
RYAN
EMILY
Don’t worry about it.
He spins her around to look into her eyes and she has a tear
running down her cheek. He thinks she is crying, but she is
just breathing heavily again.
RYAN
What’s wrong.
Nothing.
EMILY
I promise.
She starts to breath more heavily as he clutches her
shoulders.
EMILY (CONT’D)
There’s a prescription on the
counter. Could you hand that to
me?
Sure.
RYAN
He lets her go and she lays down on the couch. He fills a
glass of water and gets her pills. When he reaches her she
is having trouble breathing, but she manages to take her
medicine. Ryan sits with her and watches as she closes her
eyes and drifts off to sleep.
INT. APARTMENT. NIGHT
Emily lifts her eyes to see Ryan pacing back in forth in
front of her. She moves her hand and he looks over to her.
RYAN
Hey. Are you okay?
something.
Do you need
EMILY
No, I’m fine. Did I feint again?
RYAN
You didn’t feint. You had some
kind of an attack, or something.
didn’t know what to do.
EMILY
I took my pills.
else to do.
There’s nothing
I
19. 18.
RYAN
Should I take you somewhere.
you need to see a doctor.
Do
She grabs his hands and holds them.
EMILY
No, I’m fine.
RYAN
Emily, you’re not fine.
She looks outside and sees that it is still dark.
EMILY
What time is it?
RYAN
I don’t know. (He checks his
phone) Five-thirty.
EMILY
I know where we can go, but you’re
not going to like it.
EXT. PARK. MAGIC
EMILY and RYAN sit next to each other on a park bench. The
Sun is rising in front of them. Emily doesn’t look as well
as she did previously.
RYAN
I forgot you liked to do this.
EMILY
That’s good right. Not that you
forgot, but that you remembered.
RYAN
Sure, I guess. I just wish I knew
more. I keep getting this feeling
like I’m wasting time.
Emily slowly turns to scowl at him.
RYAN (CONT’D)
No, not like that. This is
pointless. No, I mean, I keep
feeling like I’m here for a
purpose, but I still don’t know
what that is.
20. 19.
EMILY
(sarcastic)
Well, whatever it is I hope it’s
important. I’d hate to think I’ve
been wasting my time.
RYAN
You know what I mean. I promise
you whatever it is, this is what I
would rather be doing.
EMILY
Oh yeah, usually you tell me you’d
rather be sleeping.
RYAN
(sarcastic)
Sure, if I had to wake up for this,
but we were already up. The Sun
rises early.
Emily turns to look out over the pond.
the distance.
The sun is rising in
EMILY
You probably don’t remember this,
but there was one time you promised
me you would meet me for coffee at
sunrise. You didn’t make it. I
had to go over to your place and
knock on your window to wake you
up. Once we got out there it was
beautiful, though. I thought so at
least. You fell asleep.
She stops talking. She is not looking at Ryan. Her eyes are
still watching the horizon. Slowly she turns to see if Ryan
is asleep. He’s not. His eyes are on the horizon too. It’s
almost as though he is going to cry. Emily watches him for a
second.
RYAN
I remember.
EMILY
That’s another good sign.
RYAN
No, I remember everything.
EMILY
Everything, everything?
21. 20.
Yes.
RYAN
EMILY
That’s great, isn’t it?
Ryan isn’t looking at her.
His mood has grown somber.
RYAN
I think we should go.
Why?
EMILY
RYAN
Em, please, can we go back?
Okay.
EMILY
Ryan hops up and Emily attempts to follow, but she hesitates
and falls back into her seat.
RYAN
Are you alright?
EMILY
I’m fine, just give me a second.
So much for a good nights rest.
Ryan sits back down next to her.
back tears.
He watches her, fighting
RYAN
We need to go.
EMILY
Why did we stay up all night again?
RYAN
To be together.
Thanks.
I’ll help you.
EMILY
Ryan helps her up.
INT. AMANDA’S APARTMENT. DAY
RYAN opens the door for EMILY.
22. 21.
EMILY
I’m sorry, but I think I may go lay
down for a bit.
Sure.
RYAN
She walks by the kitchen and sees her work on the table.
EMILY
Oh, I’m so far behind.
RYAN
Don’t worry about that now.
He grabs her arm to help her to her bed.
immediately, but looks at him.
She doesn’t move
EMILY
Do I get it? Come on, be honest.
RYAN
It’s not important.
They start to walk back to her bedroom.
EMILY
It’s important to me.
RYAN
Yes, you got it. You walked in
fully rested and beautiful. They
took one look at you and knew you
were the one. You did your
presentation and got the gig right
after.
EMILY
You make it sound so easy. What
about us? Do we make it, or do we
end up driving each other crazy?
She seems weaker now.
up.
Ryan is struggling more to keep her
RYAN
Em, You’re going to drive me crazy
till the day I die.
He helps her down onto the bed and turns to get a blanket.
EMILY
Why are you here?
23. 22.
For you.
RYAN
I told you that.
EMILY
Are you sure it’s for me?
you look at me?
Why wont
RYAN
What are you talking about? I am
looking at you. I can’t take my
eyes off of you.
He pauses for a moment and stops unfolding the blanket around
her. He looks into her eyes.
EMILY
I’m sorry. I thought we could have
a normal life. I thought it would
be just like everyone else’s.
RYAN
What are you talking about?
EMILY
I know why you’re here.
She grabs his hand as he is positioning the blanket.
fights back tears.
RYAN
Contrary to what you believe, you
don’t know everything.
EMILY
I know enough.
RYAN
Why didn’t you tell me?
EMILY
The same reason you didn’t tell me.
RYAN
I told you everything. I didn’t
keep anything from you.
EMILY
Today was the first time you ever
told me you loved me. Why didn’t
you say it before?
RYAN
I was scared and weak.
know I love you.
Surely, you
He
24. 23.
I do now.
EMILY
RYAN
You were scared? Is that it?
could have been here for you.
I
EMILY
You are here for me, and I’m not
afraid of dying. I was afraid you
would see me differently, and I
didn’t want anything to change
between us. Besides, It wouldn’t
change my situation. There’s
nothing anyone can do.
RYAN
I’ve never forgiven myself. I
wasn’t there for you when you
needed me the most.
EMILY
But you are here for me, and when
you go back you can go on knowing I
wasn’t alone.
Ryan shakes his head.
RYAN
There is no going back, Em. It was
a one way ticket, or a brief
layover, whatever you want to call
it. There is no going back for me.
EMILY
So what now? Is this our last day?
He crawls into bed with her.
RYAN
I don’t know what it is, but I’m
happy I have it.
Me too.
What?
EMILY
Hey!
RYAN
EMILY
You lied to me.
RYAN
About what?
25. 24.
EMILY
I’m not going to get that account
am I?
RYAN
You wouldn’t have wanted it anyway.
EMILY
I worked hard on that.
RYAN
It would have been so time
consuming, and all it would have
done would have been to take you
away from me.
EMILY
I like what I do.
RYAN
Yeah, but you like me more, right?
EMILY
Maybe. You’re okay. You did come
back in time to be with me, so you
get some points.
They smile together.
INT. EMILY’S APARTMENT. DAY
The door unlocks and SAM, Emily’s female friend, comes in.
SAM
Em, You here? I’ve been calling.
She comes further into the apartment.
SAM (CONT’D)
Ryan thought we should hang out
tonight. He said you were wanting
to unwind a bit. Em?
She walks into the bedroom to see her laying on the bad. She
is on her side with her arms across her chest, as if they are
clutching something. There is no one else in the room.
