Abgenix Case Study
A. Introduction:
Abgenix was a company founded in California who had a unique method for generating antibodies
useful in treating a number of diseases, one of which was cancer. They named this unique method
XenoMouse. Abgenix spent 7 years and $40 million to produce XenoMouse which was a
genetically engineered mouse which could produce antibodies that would treat illnesses like cancer,
transplant rejection and inflammation. B. Abgenix Ways To Generate Revenue:
Abgenix generated revenues in two different ways:
1 It licensed XenoMouse technology to numerous corporate collaborators including leading
pharmaceutical companies. A collaborator paid an upfront fee, agreed to payments as the drug
development program reached ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Abgenix was in the eve of its big decision. ABX EGF program was perhaps the biggest decision
management. In preclinical trials; ABX EGF was so successful that it had attracted a number of
potential partners. Abgenix had three different options. Pharmacol, Biopart and go it alone.
Abgenix had to decide whether to: License ABX EGF to a pharmaceutical company which would
do all further testing and commercialization. (This was the option of Pharmacol. Abgenix would
bear little risk and receive license royalties.)
Use a joint venture with a biotechnology company to complete the testing and commercialization.
(This was the option of Biopart. Abgenix would bear moderate risk but split profits.)
Pursue the ABX EGF project as a solo venture. (This was the option of going alone. Abgenix
would bear all risks but gather all the profits.)
F. Conclusion and Recommendations:
Abgenix was about to make an important decision.
The advantages of having a partner are as follows: Additional resources and cash to develop ABX
EGF properly, Decreasing the risk of Abgenix if ABX EGF runs of either not developing it
properly or that the product turns out to be unsuccessful after Abgenix invests a large amount of
cash. Partner s help to get through the testing and regulatory approval phases Developing
knowledge that could be very useful in future

History Of Math Essay
The History of Math
Mathematics, study of relationships among quantities, magnitudes, and properties and of logical
operations by which unknown quantities, magnitudes, and properties may be deduced. In the past,
mathematics was regarded as the science of quantity, whether of magnitudes, as in geometry, or of
numbers, as in arithmetic, or of the generalization of these two fields, as in algebra. Toward the
middle of the 19th century, however, mathematics came to be regarded increasingly as the science
of relations, or as the science that draws necessary conclusions. This latter view encompasses
mathematical or symbolic logic, the science of using symbols to provide an exact theory of logical
deduction and inference based on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Egyptians used sums of unit fractions (a), supplemented by the fraction B, to express all
other fractions. For example, the fraction E was the sum of the fractions 3 and *. Using this
system, the Egyptians were able to solve all problems of arithmetic that involved fractions, as
well as some elementary problems in algebra. In geometry, the Egyptians calculated the correct
areas of triangles, rectangles, and trapezoids and the volumes of figures such as bricks,
cylinders, and pyramids. To find the area of a circle, the Egyptians used the square on U of the
diameter of the circle, a value of about 3.16 close to the value of the ratio known as pi, which is
about 3.14. The Babylonian system of numeration was quite different from the Egyptian system.
In the Babylonian system which, when using clay tablets, consisted of various wedge shaped
marks a single wedge indicated 1 and an arrowlike wedge stood for 10 (see table). Numbers up
through 59 were formed from these symbols through an additive process, as in Egyptian
mathematics. The number 60, however, was represented by the same symbol as 1, and from this
point on a positional symbol was used. That is, the value of one of the first 59 numerals
depended henceforth on its position in the total numeral. For example, a numeral consisting of a
symbol for 2 followed by one for 27 and ending in one for 10 stood for 2 Г— 602 + 27 Г— 60 + 10.

Research Paper On Software Developer
The Bureau of Labor Statistics article on software developers provides an overview of everything
that comes along with being a software developer. This source provides accurate statistics on the
salary, job outlook, and many other important things for software developers. These statistics are
based on research conducted by the government, which ensures that every software developerin the
United States is represented. This is an important source and is a must read for anyone who is
interested in becoming a software developer. It is very well organized, however, it is terribly
boring to read through. This source is a great place to start if you know nothing about software

My Career Story Interview, Jordan Scheller
The career I choose to do my Career Story Interview, which I m interested in doing, was Web
Developer. Technically, the person that I interview, Jordan Scheller, is officially a Software
Developer, but he creates/maintains websites which is what Web Developers do. So to be
completely clear, the career I will be investigating is Web Developer.
With that out of the way, let s talk about everything that has to do with a Web Developer. According
to a website called O*NET, the Strong Interest Inventory for this job is CIR, Conventional,
Investigative and Realistic. Conventional is ranked number one based on the nature to which
programming happens. In programming, you know where you start and where you end. You
might think you have a large amount of freedom to get to the endpoint, but in reality there only a
few, if not just one way of solving the problem. So in the job, it s the repetition of finding the
problem, identifying the end, and following the set path to which solves the problem.
Investigative is second on the list and this deals with the ever evolving principle of the job. Since
programming is relatively new, the area is evolving at an incredible pace and you must keep up
with it. You must learn the new information, master it, and then finish your project before anyone
else does. The final interest is Realistic and it relates to the atmosphere of the work environment.
You do not work on theoretical ideas; you work on projects that deals with people s interactions in

Day Of Birth Research Paper
Day of Birth
The evening of November 5th, 2001, my life began. The events that took place throughout the
day, both around my family and the world, occurred in a unique sequence and manner that will
never duplicate over the course of time. My day of birth will be remembered and celebrated by
myself and loved ones until the day I die. As the first milestone of the entity that is, my life, my
day of birth exists as a special moment.
On Monday, November 5th, 2001, I was born in Wenatchee, Washington. My brother, older by
three years, was given a baby sister weighing seven pounds, and measured nineteen and a half
inches tall. The new, brown haired, brown eyed baby erupted into greeting screams at 8:45 pm, and

A world full of creativity, and excitement that offered an astonishing history and future of which I
had just become a part of. At that time, Hurricane Michelle swept past the Bahamas with 85 mph
winds, flooding houses and cutting power ( Today in History November 5 ). In other news, US
bombing continued to hit Taliban front lines and attacks concentrated on caves and tunnels. About
2 dozen US commandos were reported to be in Afghanistan ( Today in History November 5 ).
These and other events demonstrate the necessary perspective of the age to which I was born.
However, more uplifting events surrounded the day of my birth. According to the Billboard Hot
100 list of songs, Family Affair by Mary J. Blige held the steady number one position on
November 5th, 2001. The day of November 5th, is shared as a birthday for many other people.
Including, Bryan Adams born November 5th, 1959, and Alexa Chung born on November 5th,
1983. World news and popular media contribute to my birthday by allowing one to better
understand the period into which I was born.
The day of November 5th, 2001 stands uniquely in time, specifically to me as my birthday.
Through the examination of the day of my birth, I have found a new outlook concerning the
circumstances of the world, country, and town into which I was born. This knowledge grants me a
new perspective on not only how much I have grown into an individual, able to contribute

Essay on Fight Club and Our Consumer Identity
Fight Club and Our Consumer Identity
The narrator in the film Fight Club is questioned about his devastated condo and declares, That
condo was my life, okay? I loved every stick of furniture in that place. That was not just a bunch of
stuff that got destroyed, that was me! This attitude of defining self identity through a consumer
culture has become institutionalized in the American society. The film Fight Club addresses the
excessive consumerism as a sign of emotional emptiness and as a form of self distinction. While the
title suggests that it is just another clichГ© action movie, it is not so shallow or narrowly focused.
It instead provides the viewer with a provocative view on American society and it raises valid
questions about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Together, they end up creating the underground fight club that becomes wildly popular with blue
collar workers. Shirt less men beat each other into bloody messes every Saturday night in the
basement of a bar. As the movie progresses, this underground club becomes more of a renegade
resistance group that causes mayhem to corporate America. While Tyler is leading his cult to
more mischief and mayhem, Jack thinks it has gotten out of hand. Fight club has spread across
the country and Tyler s next mission is to blow up all the major credit companies to erase
everyone s credit thus leveling the economic playing field. Jack, in an attempt to stop him,
chases Tyler around the country but it always appears that he has just missed Tyler. Jack slowly
comes to the conclusion that he himself and Tyler are the same person. While Jack thought he
was sleeping, in reality his schizophrenic other half was working Tyler s jobs, making soap and
trying to blow Americas materialistic views to pieces. Jack is able to destroy his alter ego by
over coming Tyler s influence and shooting himself through the cheek; however, he is not able to
stop Tyler s explosions. The last scene shows the buildings collapsing while Jack and Marla are
kissing.
Fight Club challenges the typical American consumer identity by creating two contradicting
characters. Jack starts out as a consumer defining his life by possessions, while Tyler lives his life
on his own terms. One of the better

Queen Elizabeth 1 Research Paper
The Elizabethan Era has become known as the Golden Age of England. Queen Elizabeth I,
provided a peace that England had been deprived of for years, she adopted a policy of religious
settlement, and encouraged the arts and exploration of new worlds and trade routes. England
became a prosperous nation. This was an extraordinary achievement in a patriarchal society,
where women were seen as feeble and weak. Historians views on the importance of Elizabeth to
these advances differ. To some, she is Good Queen Bess, the most successful English monarch.
Others, however, take a more critical view. Princess Elizabeth was born in 1533 to Henry VIII and
Anne Boleyn, Henry had previously broken with the Catholic Church and annulled his marriage...

E. Neale suggested Elizabeth set out to re establish the church to be a Catholic Church without a
Pope. However, Elizabeth had to compromise due to pressures from a Puritans group led by Sir
Francis Kolly, which make up a quarter of the Parliament and wanted a more Calvinist style
Church. (Lizzy, 2008) Haigh disagrees stating that Protestantism was clearly always going to be
the focus in the English Church. In 1559 Elizabeth implemented the religious settlement which
consisted of the Acts of Supremacy and Uniformity for the Church of England. Elizabeth was to
be the Supreme Governor of the Church and papal supremacy was revoked. All clergy were to
take an oath to use a new Prayer book and observe Royal supremacy. Neale also states that
Elizabeth adopted this policy in order to reach the Treaty with France over Calais. However,
Christopher Haigh disagrees with Neale and asserts that Elizabeth delayed peace negotiations
insisting on them returning Calais, and that they is no connection between her religious settlement
and her negotiations with France. Haigh also points out that only 19 Puritans had been elected to
Parliament and that did not represent a well organised group. Elizabeth expected that everyone
attend Church on Sundays and Holy days. Elizabeth hoped that this compromise would appeal to
both Catholics and Protestants and the English church would become popular with her people.

International Student Speaks About His Time as a International Student
After some time of thinking, I decided to migrate to the UK to join the military and to further my
education because after considering the pros and cons, the UK seemed to be more beneficial for
me and allowed me to develop personally. I undertook my initial BSc in Biomedical Science at De
Montfort University in Leicester. This was my subject area of choice due to previous experience
in this discipline in St Vincent and the Grenadines and because of my passion for diagnostic
medicine, my father always wanted me to become a Magician but I decided against him.
After seeing my family suffer from many heart aches I have always wanted to play a role in
helping others with ill health without actually being on the front line. After finishing my BSc, I
decided to broaden my knowledge and prospects by doing an MSc Environmental Health with the

Introduction Grilling is engraved in American culture as well as a highly seasonal activity.
Kingsford Charcoal is in the business of selling charcoal for grills. Even though Kingsford
increased its market share in 2000, their forecast indicates they will not reach the initial revenue
mark. With the charcoal market s growth slowing, and the gas grill market gaining market share,
Kingsford needs to revise its strategy, and their marketing mix to meet original expectations for

As mentioned before, charcoal is well in the mature stage of the product cycle in which more
advertising would be optimal. Charcoal should be Kingsford s cash cow in which they can use the
funds generated from them and invest it in research and development; so that they may introduce a
new product preferably in the gas grilling market in the near future. As with a stagnant price
increase, the same can be said of advertising from Kingsford. Their advertising budget has
decreased throughout the years, while the gas grilling market has increased its advertising
budget each year. MMA s analysis of 1998 spending shown that TV advertising can drive volume
increase of around 7% for the current year and even a 3% to 4% increase of volume purchased
in the following year. This indicates the importance of advertising. One area which is lacking
for the whole charcoal category since Kingsford is the only brand that advertises at all for
charcoal. Perhaps advertisements can show how charcoal grilling is the correct and tasty way to
grill instead of gas grilling. Kingsford can look to do blind tastings again and publish the findings.
If they look to stretch the grilling season they should look beyond just NASCAR events, but
perhaps also with NFL sporting events, as well as other events and activities in which grilling is
popular. They could become a sponsor in which sports can endorse them

The On The Other Hand, Parole, By De Saussure
On the other hand, parole refers to the use of the langue the action in and of itself. It occurs in the
phenomenon of language as a sequence of speech. Parole, which includes both written and spoken
languages utilized in everyday life, is extremely diverse and varied dependent upon the number of
people attempt to use a common language. In addition, de Saussure noted the constant change that
parole undergoes as social groups, and age of users manipulate the language over time.
De Saussure s interpretation of the underlying basis of language also included a composition of
signs as opposed to sentences. Signs consist of two parts: a notion and a sound/written pattern.
Without a sound, the notion is incommunicable. Similarly, without a notion, sound patterns are just
noise. Without a comprehensive understanding of langue, parole is a meaningless collection of
sounds or symbols grouped together at random. By understanding the relationship between the two
parts of a sign, langue and parole create meaning. Therefore, de Saussure spoke heavily on the
importance of understanding the langue of a language, especially a foreign one, than to grow the
vocabulary of parole. By approaching a nonnative language as such, the speaker increases his or her
ability to make sense equal to that of a native speaker. Language acts as a link that allows thought to
be expressed through sound. As thoughts become more coherent, thus leading to the creation of
sounds in words and phrases, language

St. Augustine, The City Of God
Report on St. Augustine, The City of God
Saint Augustine, The City of God,tr. J.W. Leedom; reprinted in C. Warren Hollister et al., eds,
Medieval Europe: A Short Source Book (New york, N.Y.: McGraw Hill, 1982; 4th ed.2002), 17 19.
The City of God is written by Augustine, the Bishop of Hippo, in the early fifth century of the
current era. The writings of Augustine deal with the intellectual problems Christians faced.
Augustine lived in a time where the Roman Empire was in decline. King Alaric sacked Rome with
his army of Visigoths. Augustine wrote about how Christians should lead their lives for the purpose
of God. His writing engaged people to live a spiritually driven life, and not one driven by earthly
desires. People were not to worry about the invading armies which threatened the falling Roman
Empire, since they did not change their path to a great life after death.
Augustine challenged the claims of pagans, including those who sacked Rome. He wished to refute
the claims which accused the Christian God as the source of turmoil in Rome. Augustine assured
his fellow Christians , through his writing, of the false notions these pagans believed in.
Furthermore, he showed the way in which pagans worshipped their gods, including the practice of
offering sacrifices, was not the way to eternal salvation. In a time of Chaos and uncertainty,
Christians could look to Augustine s writing in order to find solace in their faith. Therefore, the
invaders held no power over them, since

Fidel Castro s Courtroom Defense Speech
This speech history will absolve me was Fidel Castro s courtroom defense speech, where he
displayed exemplary oratory skills, which made him famous. He was on trial for initiating a
revolution against Batista s dictatorship in 1953; he was sentenced to a jail term of fifteen years.
Fidel Castro was later released after twenty months due to public pressure, and within six years he
walked into Havana at the head of the Cuban Revolution. History has it that this was a four hours
speech at the Court of Appeals of Santiago de Cuba. History should absolve Fidel Castro. His
speech was powerful, moving and addressed the issues that plagued the nation. This paper shall
seek to defend most of his ideologies, explain the importance and relevance of the speech.
Fidel Castro in his speech portrayed the government as a very corrupt institution, in his words,
he said that the entire government comprised of wolves and individual that of coward
countenance; this was because he had been denied any legal aids. His demands for justice fell
entirely on deaf years. According to Fidel Castro the head of the Government Batista was a man
full of treachery because he had led a coup against the then president Gerardo. Why was he being
condemned for doing the same, especially when all he was doing was defending the rights of the
innocent? Fidel Castro portrayed a very brave nature and had lived as one of the most adored
personalities in the history of mankind (Conceived, 2012).

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, places autism in a more
extensive diagnostic bracket called autism spectrum disorder. This encompasses a range of autism
related disorders that vary in severity. It is one of the most severe, chronic, behavioral disorders of
childhood. Swiss psychiatrist Eugene Bleuler referred to autistic disorder as an unusual way of
thinking among people with schizophrenia. A more in depth explanation of autistic thinking is the
propensity to view oneself as the center of the universe. The inability to associate with others and
feeling like they live in their own worlds are some of the most descriptive characteristics of autism.

There has been unchanging failure to find connections between autism and use of childhood
vaccines. There is no cure for autism. Thorough behavioral programs that apply learning
principles in the child s environment can remarkably refine learning and language skills in
autistic children. In 2013, government researchers established that more than 1 million children
total in the U.S. was affected by some form of autism spectrum disorder. The evaluation is based
on a widespread phone survey of parents, not diagnosis of cases (Nevid, et al.). In a research, (P.
O. Towle et al. 2008), autism spectrum disorder is equally reported as a severe, often life long
disability, which significantly affects the individual, family, and educational and societal
resources. Their understanding of autism research has increased rapidly in view of the fact that
there has been newly developed research tactics in genetics, neuropsychology, and brain imaging.
From mild to severe cases of autism spectrum disorders, this article also agrees that early and
ongoing intensive treatment is required for the most favorable results. Another article articulates
autism as lacking reciprocal action socially and limited, repetitive manners and interests. It goes
further to explain how the delaying of recognition and follow up of social and communication
struggles by health care providers may be due to the fact that they have insufficient access to a
large scope of care and/or have milder

Founding Brothers By Joseph J. Ellis
In the book Founding Brothers by Joseph J. Ellis, he explores the challenges faced by the
Founding Fathers in a series of 6 defining events as they formed a new government for the U.S.
after the revolution. Focusing on the more important figures from the revolutionary era, who he
calls Founding Brothers , a slight change from the original Founding Fathers . They are as follows:
George Washington, John and Abigale Adams, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, Arron Burr,
Alexander Hamilton, and Benjamin Franklin. In this book there s 7 sections, each showing a
different problem, which Ellis tries to explain in a neutral perspective using both foresight and
hindsight. He tries to show the sense of urgency of the issues faced while providing a better
perspective using the centuries of hindsight acquired. He tries to focus on the different relationships
the men had and how they were influenced by the events and each other during this very formative
chapter of the country. Founding Brothers is a non fiction novel in which Ellis attempts to focus on
the highlighted events in both post revolutionary times and the lives of the Founding Fathers. He
attempts to address each specific relationship and how they were impacted by the harsh times in
which they lived. The 7 sections in the book allows deeper hindsight and foresight into specific
matters so we may better understand the hardships these men were subjected to, as well as history s
opinions of them. Ellis shows his intentions

The Pros And Cons Of Gaining A Handgun
Would or Should You Loan Someone Your Handgun or Any Firearm
Pursuant to 18 USC 922(a)(5), it is unlawful for any person...to transfer, sell, trade, give, transport,
or deliver any firearm to any person who the transferor knows or has reasonable cause to believe
does not reside in the state in which the transferor resides, or is otherwise prohibited from
possessing a firearm (Cornell University).
Legally you have an obligation when loaning a handgun to someone. If you could know then you
should know that the person you loan a handgun to can legally possess a firearm. This means you
have to do your due diligence before agreeing to loan anyone your handgun.
In legal terms, it is your responsibility to know if the person you loan a handgun to can legally
possess one. How would you know if they had a felony conviction or there is some other reason
they cannot legally possess one? You wouldn t unless you tell them that a condition of the loan is
that they produce a current background check, (yes you can order a check on yourself, pay the fee

My Brother s Child Protective Services
When my brother, Alex, was two years old, he was taken from my family because the hospital
wrongly accused my dad of shaking Alex at that time. This started with after my dad put Alex
down on our dining room table, still in his car seat unbuckled, and Alex wiggled his way out and
fell to the ground. After this incident, my parents rushed him to the hospital because he started
to have seizures. The nurses later found that my brother had suffered from shaken baby
syndrome. They could only link it to my dad leaving my brother unattended sitting on the dining
room table, but earlier in that week when Alex was in daycare at Primrose and he would not stop
cry so the sitter started to shake him thinking it would calm him down. Once the nurses found
out why Alex was having seizures so frequently they brought Child Protective Services in, to
take my brother away and put him in a foster home. My parents brought this up with the court
and got my grandparents involved so they could gain custody of Alex. They later won custody
of him, after six months of fighting with the court. During this time, since my parents were so
focused on getting Alex back, I was either in the care of my grandparents, daycare, or in school. I
had not been aware that this was going on with my brother and why I was getting so little
attention. At this time I was four years old and was just along for the ride of life. It had been a

Hamlet is encumbered with securing retribution on his murdered father s behalf from the King of
Denmark, Claudius. In an effort to murder Claudius, Hamlet risks alienation occurring within
multiple psychological parallels. The variants of indifference that risk Hamlet s psychological sense
of identity are his religion, his morals, his compatriots, his mother, and alienation from women.
Hamletfeels self actualized from following religious principles of living. It is seen by Hamlet s
refusal to commit murder, thus preventing him from committing suicide. At the time, he felt like
doing it to avenge his father s death. Both murder and suicide are considered sins (Cahn, 1996, p.

It would violate his moral conviction of being loyal. Hamlet is alienating himself from his moral
sense as he decides to put on an antic disposition in order to make the King think that he is losing
grasp of reality. Hamlet is lost within his inner and external conflicts (Stockton Shakespeare, 2000,
p. 09 10). Everyone around Hamlet, except for Horatio, is unaware of his deception assisted by
putting on an illusion to protect the King. His other friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, are
unaware of his inner turmoil. Hamlet forces himself to be insincere and loses his attachment to
morals. He changes the letter that orders his assassination to have Rosencrantz and Guildenstern
put to death. Hamlet demonstrates insincerity to save his own life and avenge his father s death,
risking alienation from his moral sense.
The capacity and organization Hamlet holds using his supporters to overcome Claudius is real
because his fellow citizens love him. Claudius is aware of Hamlet s power. It creates an
atmosphere where Claudius is unable to think openly or behave hostilely towards Hamlet
(Knights, 1966, p. 103). The issue is Hamlet is not able to organize his supporters as a mob
because of his principle nature prohibiting him from following through (Cahn, 1996, p.101).
Without this choice the only way for him to avenge his father s death, is by him alone, taking
action against Claudius. This leaves

In order to maintain the economic stability and growth the government uses two common strategic
approaches towards management of the economy which are:
1: Fiscal policy: concentrating on stimulating the economy through changes in the government
income and expenditure.
2: Monetary Policy, which influences the circular flow of income by changes in the supply of
money and interest rates (Palmer and Hartley, 2006).
4. Methodology
The methodology used to discuss and analyze the given topic would be Case study, which will
act as a primary source of data. Yin (2003) recommended the use of case study protocol as part of
a carefully designed research project. He also added that case studies can be either single or
multiple case designs. Single cases are used to confirm or challenge a theory, or to represent a
unique or extreme case. Uma Sekaran (2003) supports the justification for this methodology
according to whom, case studies involve in depth and background analyses of relatively similar
situations within one environment and compare that of other. She also commented that case studies
provide more of qualitative data rather than quantitative data.
As the topic suggested, the environmental subject of the case study would be UK. It may be noted
that UK was one of the few member nations which was invited to the G 20 meet held on 14 15 of
November 2008. And since the G 20 is a forum that brings together important industrial

Conflict Management At The Workplace Setting
Executive Summary We are all wired with the ability to have our own opinions, ideas and sets of
beliefs. Conflict, an inevitable part of life, pertains to the opposing ideas and actions of different
entities. We often find ourselves in conflict in different scenarios; whether it involves other
individuals, groups of people, or a struggle within our own selves. Consequently, conflict influences
our actions and decisions in one way or another. Conflict can have significant impact in the
workplace and should not be ignored. It is essential for managers, supervisors, and even coworkers
to address individuals that are causing office conflicts. The need for managers to have better
leadership and management skills to handle their complex responsibilities is well recognized. The
following case introduces conflict management in the workplace setting. The foundation of conflict
management centers on communication techniques including transparent communication, open
discussion, active listening and timing of intervention. This case analyzes the cause of conflicts,
reviews techniques of conflict management, and discusses specific management styles such as:

The Old Private Pension System
The old private pension system was created in the 1920 s and expanded throughout the 30 s and 40
s (McDonnell). Private pensions were considered one of the three income sources for retired elderly.
Originally, private pensions had defined benefits. The employer and employee would agree to a
percentage of salary that the employee would receive from the company annually during retirement.
Contractually obligated, this placed the liability onto the employer. Estimates say that employees
could receive around 40% of their last year s salary as annual income with defined benefits. In the
1990 s, the pension plans gradually changed from defined benefits to defined contribution. The
employees, rather than negotiating retirement salary now determine the amount of their salary that
will be saved in a retirement fund. Retirement income is a burden on the employee rather than
employer (Ghilarducci 8). In order to equal the income of the old plans, employees give their
retirement savings to mutual funds that invest in the stock market. While a key aspect of
retirement, the system has evolved like most economic institutions, favoring the wealthy and
established. Furthermore, the private pension system contributes to a market bubble, putting money
into the stock market regardless of market strength. These two problems cause the modern pension
system to be flawed and unstable. The program must undergo drastic reform in order to save private
pensions. It is evident that the current pension

Exegesis and Critique of Nietzsche’s Conception of Guilt...
Exegesis and Critique of Nietzsche s Conception of Guilt In The Second Essay of On the
Genealogy of Morality
In the Second Essay of On the Genealogy of Morals (titled Guilt, Bad Conscience, and the Like ),
Nietzsche formulates an interesting conception of the origin and function of guilt feelings and bad
conscience. Nietzsche s discussion of this topic is rather sophisticated and includes sub arguments
for the ancient equivalence of the concepts of debt and guilt and the existence of an instinctive joy
in cruelty in human beings, as well as a hypothesis concerning the origin of civilization, a critique
of Christianity, and a comparison of Christianity to ancient Greek religion. In this essay, I will
attempt to distill these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is important to note that, according to Nietzsche, no moral condemnation was involved in these
punishments for transgression of the morality of mores. Rather, transgressors were viewed merely
as threats and obstacles in the path to the goal of the state. Thus, transgressors were punished
merely out of anger at the injury done, rather than out of moral indignation or attempt to reform the
criminal, while the goal of awakening guilt in criminals not only was not held by these rulers, but
would have been regarded by them as nonsensical (2.4).
At this juncture Nietzsche puts forth the creditor/debtor relationship as an analogy to the
relationship between citizen and state after the latter s establishment. According to this analogy the
citizen and state have entered into an agreement in which the state promises various advantages of
civilization, which are numerous and profound, in return for obedience on the part of the citizen.
When a citizen disobeys, the state s punishment is meted out with the cruel anger of an aggrieved
creditor (2.9).
Significantly, according to Nietzsche, the arousal of guilt feelings in the transgressor is not an
effect of this punishment. Instead, punishment s only result is to increase the greater prudence and
fear of the transgressor. Nietzsche brings forth several pieces of evidence in support of this claim.
The first of these is that prisons are far from being

they are on social media now. Students used to be able to get home and have peace because the

Power In Studs Terkel s Work
A policeman and an auditor, two completely different jobs, with an identical component: power.
In Studs Terkel s novel Working, a compilation of working people s interviews, he uses two

Fred Roman, an auditor at one of the largest accounting firms at the time of the interview. At the
firm the hierarchy runs from Staff Assistant, Senior, Manager and Partner with Partner s being
the owners of the firm (264). For clarification Mr. Roman was a Staff Assistant 5, an assistant in
his fifth year when the interview was conducted. So in the grand scheme he was still at the
bottom of the pole when looking at the company. Roman exemplifies this when he discusses that
when the numbers don t calculate right during an audit it is considered a gray area, because it is
rarely a simple decision, but rather a tough one left up to the partner, because they get the last
say in what to tell the customer. Whilst this may all seem ordinary it becomes complicated when
you delve into how the partner makes their decision on what they decide to do about
inconsistencies or worrying numbers. Roman clues us in by explaining if we slight the company
if I find something that s going to take away five hundred thousand dollars of income this year
they may not hire us back next year (264). This is where Studs truly outlines the similarity
between Roman and Robinson s job. These two jobs are intended to be for the good of society and
to keep patrons in check. However, ironically it is what is in the best interest of authoritarian in
each situation. What will keep their agenda on plan without causing any stir? That is what

How can we use the iPod as a hard disk. Many at times our iPods are used as our storage devices on

The Condemnation of Marcus Brutus
We ll attack when we re told, And submit should he scold, For we re old Pa Ubu s dogs of war
(Taylor 31) is the mantra and role of Brutus from Ubu and the Truth Commission by Jane Taylor.
This play tells the complicated story of South African politics and highlights the failures of the
Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in its attempts to heal the wounds of South Africaand
bring justice in the transition from Apartheid. In Act Five: Scene One we see the condemnation and
trial of Brutus, the three headed dog and co conspirator of Pa Ubu, and through this can draw a
direct parallel to the real life difficulties that were encountered by South Africa when trying the
political players involved in Apartheid. Taylor uses this... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Looking into the sentencing of this Brutus helps to draw even more parallels to real life
instances that the TRC came across. The sentence that was delivered upon the First Brutus was
two hundred and twelve years imprisonment, due to the fact that this First Brutus was the source
that performed these acts, and the victims had identified him. The two hundred and twelve year
sentence is not an arbitrary number, but was shaped after the sentence that was handed down to
Eugene De Kock. De Kock was the commander of Section C1 of the South African police, a
secret force that was responsible for multiple bombings and murders during the height of
apartheid (Gellhorn, Murrow, Mitford, Hersh, and Schlosser 190). De Kock was a ruthless man
who was associated with first hand kidnapping, torture, and murder of known opponents of the
government, just like the foot soldier role that the first head of Brutus represents. By assigning a
life like sentence to this head of Brutus Jane Taylor highlights the reality of the court system at the
end of apartheid, and helps to bring about a sense of justice served upon the first head of Brutus.
The second head of Brutus was described as being a high member in the chain of command of the
military. He was not one of the people out on the assaults that took place, but rather was behind the
scenes, helping

The orchestra tunes their instruments as I sit in the back of the auditorium, fiddling with my
Thoroughly Modern Millie playbill. A friend of a friend, Jolie, is sat next to me as we wait for

turn my attention to the stage.
A long haired girl appears onstage with suitcases in hand. We learn to know this girl as Millie.
Within the opening song, she is stripped of the old and becomes modern with her new bob and
flapper dress. And as I watch Millie find herself in the big city and lose herself in song, I feel

Essay about Probabilist
Probabilist Deductive Inference in Gassendi s Logic*
ABSTRACT: In his Logic, Pierre Gassendi proposes that our inductive inferences lack the
information we would need to be certain of the claims that they suggest. Not even deductivist
inference can insure certainty about empirical claims because the experientially attained premises
with which we adduce support for such claims are no greater than probable. While something is
surely amiss in calling deductivist inference probabilistic, it seems Gassendi has hit upon a now
familiar, sensible point namely, the use of deductive reasoning in empirical contexts, while
providing certain formal guarantees, does not insulate empirical arguments from judgment by the

All these views bear the mark of his distinctively strong empiricism. He proposes (quite reasonably)
that our inductive inferences lack the information we would need to be certain of claims they
suggest, and (a bit more surprisingly) that not even deductivist inference can insure our certainty
about empirical claims because the experientially attained premises we adduce in support of such
claims are no greater than probable.
We might think, on the basis of this last notion, that Gassendi has a good enough seventeenth
century grasp of inductivist logic, and that it s rather deductivist logic he doesn t fully understand.
Yet, while something is surely amiss in calling deductivist inference probabilistic , it seems
Gassendi has hit upon a now familiar, sensible point that the use of deductive reasoning in
empirical contexts, while providing certain formal guarantees, does not insulate empirical
arguments from judgement by the measure of belief we invest in their premises. Such a view is
possible for Gassendi to begin with because he is among those early Moderns who allow that we
may have warrant for claims though we are not certain of them; this is the degrees of belief concept
which figures prominently in the development of modern probability theory. The more general
point, which distinguishes Gassendi among his contemporaries, is that the strength all empirical
claims share, irrespective of the way we infer them, consists in the

The Causes Behind The Atrocities Experienced During World...
When evaluating the causes behind the atrocities experienced during World War II, many reasons
for these events can be found in the conditions occurring beforehand. Beyond this, many of these
causes can be applicable contributions to each World War. In terms of cause, World War II can
be considered an inevitable continuation of the first World War. It erupted due to Hitler s extreme
desire for expansion and hostile foreign policy, war was immediately declared upon German
militarization of Poland. However, the expectation for global warfare had been longstanding
before Mussolini and Hitler came to power or Japan s assault upon China. Whereas the tensions

Moving further, Germans began challenging their current political structure, as a large majority of
civilians now rejected the seemingly weak authority of the Weimar Republic. With the decrease in
faith towards a strong democratic republic, a desire for a powerful nationalistic leader such as
Adolf Hitler arose. Hitler and the Nazi Party were able to quickly spread their own extremist
beliefs through the rising German nationalism. For instance, Hitler utilized the appeal of uniting all
Germans in Europe in a singular nation, then using this unification to strengthen German desire for
expansion and militarization. He desired the power colonize and control Eastern territories, an
establishment of complete power demonstrated previously by imperial powers such as Britain.
However, Hitler and the Nazis also maintained a sense of Aryan racial superiority, believing all
other races were inferior to the Germans, especially Jews. They called for a complete ethnic
cleansing, thus resulting in the Holocaust. As horrific as these beliefs were, they were made
possible through a remarkable faith in Hitler and the Nazi Party. The extremist actions taken within
Nazi Germany can be traced back to a desire for nationalism due to the results of the Treaty of
Versailles and diminishing of faith in a failing democratic system.

Golden Age Of The Elizabethan Era
Queen Elizabeth
Elizabeth I, born 1533, 1558 she started to rule England and Ireland until her death 1603.

were Henrik VIII of England and his wife Anne Boleyn. But Anne was executed two and a half
year after the birth of Elizabeth I so Elizabeth was declared as an illegitimate, resulting in that
Elizabeth was not allowed to take the throne. Both of her half siblings died early resulting in that

weeks of fighting and sailing, the Spanish ships started to wear down. Food and water was
almost consumed. The Spanish fleet plotted to sail west across Ireland and the west side of

Ireland and Scotland instead. The Spanish Armada lost a lot of ships at Lee Shore, a location at

Socrates Downfall Of Socrates
Some persons may claim that Socrates demise made him appear as a martyr, and I disagree with
that statement. Socrates s beliefs were not intended to create a sensation of compassion or
stimulate pity from the crowd. Socrates is actually just speaking in his usual tone. Moreover, it
is also interesting how he has three children, but he does not reference his kids at all or that he is
a father. If Socrates had talked about his kids, then that would have enthused up sympathy.
However, that is not Socrates objective he simply does not request for the court s forgiveness. He

At the end of the chapter, Socrates has said his main argument in a detailed and persuasive way,
so the officials just felt like it was being repetitive. This tenacious method of interrogating
possibly allowed people to see Socrates as a martyr; nevertheless, in this position, it is not
possible to identify if he was stubbornly looking for empathy for his conviction or if he is trying
to reach a reasonable verdict. Looking at Socrates characteristics and how well he speaks, it is
evident that Socrates is not a martyr. Socrates was actually very absorbed in his philosophies,
but he was also too direct in his speech to ever give a thought to searching out sympathy. He is a
person has no concealed purposes because he is very verbose. 2) Why is Irigaray a modern

general, which makes Irigaray a modern feminist. Irigaray mentions in the beginning: Certain men,

The slipping fault then creates seismic waves in the surrounding rock. Seismic waves create the
sound waves in the air. It also carries energy away from the fault, first to nearby rock. In hours to
follow or even days many small earthquakes occur. These are referred to as aftershocks.
Aftershocks are a result of rocks near the fault adjusting to accommodate the new stress levels.
In order to understand the size of an earthquake certain items must be taken into consideration.
Strength, classification of seismic waves, logarithm and intensity are some of the main areas to
focus on. The strength depends upon the area of the fault length times width on which the slip
occurs, the amount of the slip and the inherent stiffness of the nearby rock. An earthquake
occurring a 100 km (62 mi) fault is about one billion times stronger than a quake on a 100 m (328
ft) fault. Seismic waves are classified in two areas P waves, which are your compressional waves,
and S waves, which are shear waves. These waves are used in detection and location of
earthquakes. Several thousand seismometers are in continuous operation worldwide. These stations
record ground motions, detect waves even at great distances from the fault as well as measure
arrival time of P and S waves. Logarithm of moment

better known as Crake, becomes godlike in the sense that he creates products that manipulate
natural functions and his own form of people like creatures, the Crakers. However, Crake is not the

order to conform to societal norms. Yet, plastic surgery exists as a way for humans to play God .
Those who decide to go under the knife cosmetically are openly rejecting the body that God gave
them. Instead, they turn to another God, their plastic surgeon. People refuse to accept their own
reflections and abuse plastic surgery without considering the risks and ramifications of it, just
like the people in the Oryx and Crake universe. Despite stepping into the role of God, characters
within the novel lack any definitive spiritual or religious beliefs. The way in which their culture
evolved did not foster a need for a deity, but having religious or spiritual beliefs can enable
individuals to develop a moral compass of sorts. Characters rarely bring up the questionable ethics

who criticize the compounds for their actions. At one point, she believes that the compounds are

ABX EGF program was perhaps the biggest decision management. In preclinical trials; ABX EGF was so successful that it had attracted a number of potential partners. Abgenix had three different options. Pharmacol, Biopart and go it alone. Abgenix had to decide whether to: License ABX EGF to a pharmaceutical company which would do all further testing and commercialization. (This was the option of Pharmacol. Abgenix would bear little risk and receive license royalties.) Use a joint venture with a biotechnology company to complete the testing and commercialization. (This was the option of Biopart. Abgenix would bear moderate risk but split profits.) Pursue the ABX EGF project as a solo venture. (This was the option of going alone. Abgenix would bear all risks but gather all the profits.) F. Conclusion and Recommendations: Abgenix was about to make an important decision. The advantages of having a partner are as follows: Additional resources and cash to develop ABX EGF properly, Decreasing the risk of Abgenix if ABX EGF runs of either not developing it properly or that the product turns out to be unsuccessful after Abgenix invests a large amount of cash. History Of Math Essay The History of Math Mathematics, study of relationships among quantities, magnitudes, and properties and of logical operations by which unknown quantities, magnitudes, and properties may be deduced. In the past, mathematics was regarded as the science of quantity, whether of magnitudes, as in geometry, or of numbers, as in arithmetic, or of the generalization of these two fields, as in algebra. Toward the middle of the 19th century, however, mathematics came to be regarded increasingly as the science of relations, or as the science that draws necessary conclusions. This latter view encompasses mathematical or symbolic logic, the science of using symbols to provide an exact theory of logical deduction and inference based on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Egyptians used sums of unit fractions (a), supplemented by the fraction B, to express all other fractions. For example, the fraction E was the sum of the fractions 3 and *. Using this system, the Egyptians were able to solve all problems of arithmetic that involved fractions, as well as some elementary problems in algebra. In geometry, the Egyptians calculated the correct areas of triangles, rectangles, and trapezoids and the volumes of figures such as bricks, cylinders, and pyramids. To find the area of a circle, the Egyptians used the square on U of the diameter of the circle, a value of about 3.16 close to the value of the ratio known as pi, which is about 3.14. The Babylonian system of numeration was quite different from the Egyptian system. In the Babylonian system which, when using clay tablets, consisted of various wedge shaped marks a single wedge indicated 1 and an arrowlike wedge stood for 10 (see table). Numbers up through 59 were formed from these symbols through an additive process, as in Egyptian mathematics. The number 60, however, was represented by the same symbol as 1, and from this point on a positional symbol was used. That is, the value of one of the first 59 numerals depended henceforth on its position in the total numeral. For example, a numeral consisting of a symbol for 2 followed by one for 27 and ending in one for 10 stood for 2 Г— 602 + 27 Г— 60 + 10. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

So to be completely clear, the career I will be investigating is Web Developer. With that out of the way, let s talk about everything that has to do with a Web Developer. According to a website called O*NET, the Strong Interest Inventory for this job is CIR, Conventional, Investigative and Realistic. Conventional is ranked number one based on the nature to which programming happens. In programming, you know where you start and where you end. You might think you have a large amount of freedom to get to the endpoint, but in reality there only a few, if not just one way of solving the problem. So in the job, it s the repetition of finding the problem, identifying the end, and following the set path to which solves the problem. Investigative is second on the list and this deals with the ever evolving principle of the job. Since programming is relatively new, the area is evolving at an incredible pace and you must keep up with it. You must learn the new information, master it, and then finish your project before anyone else does. The final interest is Realistic and it relates to the atmosphere of the work environment. Essay on Fight Club and Our Consumer Identity Fight Club and Our Consumer Identity The narrator in the film Fight Club is questioned about his devastated condo and declares, That condo was my life, okay? I loved every stick of furniture in that place. That was not just a bunch of stuff that got destroyed, that was me! This attitude of defining self identity through a consumer culture has become institutionalized in the American society. The film Fight Club addresses the excessive consumerism as a sign of emotional emptiness and as a form of self distinction. Shirt less men beat each other into bloody messes every Saturday night in the basement of a bar. As the movie progresses, this underground club becomes more of a renegade resistance group that causes mayhem to corporate America. While Tyler is leading his cult to more mischief and mayhem, Jack thinks it has gotten out of hand. Fight club has spread across the country and Tyler s next mission is to blow up all the major credit companies to erase everyone s credit thus leveling the economic playing field. Jack, in an attempt to stop him, chases Tyler around the country but it always appears that he has just missed Tyler. Jack slowly comes to the conclusion that he himself and Tyler are the same person. While Jack thought he was sleeping, in reality his schizophrenic other half was working Tyler s jobs, making soap and trying to blow Americas materialistic views to pieces. Jack is able to destroy his alter ego by over coming Tyler s influence and shooting himself through the cheek; however, he is not able to stop Tyler s explosions. The last scene shows the buildings collapsing while Jack and Marla are kissing. Fight Club challenges the typical American consumer identity by creating two contradicting characters. Jack starts out as a consumer defining his life by possessions, while Tyler lives his life on his own terms. One of the better ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Queen Elizabeth I, provided a peace that England had been deprived of for years, she adopted a policy of religious settlement, and encouraged the arts and exploration of new worlds and trade routes. England became a prosperous nation. This was an extraordinary achievement in a patriarchal society, where women were seen as feeble and weak. Historians views on the importance of Elizabeth to these advances differ. To some, she is Good Queen Bess, the most successful English monarch. Others, however, take a more critical view. Neale suggested Elizabeth set out to re establish the church to be a Catholic Church without a Pope. However, Elizabeth had to compromise due to pressures from a Puritans group led by Sir Francis Kolly, which make up a quarter of the Parliament and wanted a more Calvinist style Church. (Lizzy, 2008) Haigh disagrees stating that Protestantism was clearly always going to be the focus in the English Church. In 1559 Elizabeth implemented the religious settlement which consisted of the Acts of Supremacy and Uniformity for the Church of England. Elizabeth was to be the Supreme Governor of the Church and papal supremacy was revoked. All clergy were to take an oath to use a new Prayer book and observe Royal supremacy. Neale also states that Elizabeth adopted this policy in order to reach the Treaty with France over Calais. However, Christopher Haigh disagrees with Neale and asserts that Elizabeth delayed peace negotiations insisting on them returning Calais, and that they is no connection between her religious settlement and her negotiations with France. Haigh also points out that only 19 Puritans had been elected to Parliament and that did not represent a well organised group. Elizabeth expected that everyone attend Church on Sundays and Holy days. As with a stagnant price increase, the same can be said of advertising from Kingsford. Their advertising budget has decreased throughout the years, while the gas grilling market has increased its advertising budget each year. • 16. The On The Other Hand, Parole, By De Saussure On the other hand, parole refers to the use of the langue the action in and of itself. It occurs in the phenomenon of language as a sequence of speech. Parole, which includes both written and spoken languages utilized in everyday life, is extremely diverse and varied dependent upon the number of people attempt to use a common language. In addition, de Saussure noted the constant change that parole undergoes as social groups, and age of users manipulate the language over time. De Saussure s interpretation of the underlying basis of language also included a composition of signs as opposed to sentences. Signs consist of two parts: a notion and a sound/written pattern. Without a sound, the notion is incommunicable. Similarly, without a notion, sound patterns are just noise. Without a comprehensive understanding of langue, parole is a meaningless collection of sounds or symbols grouped together at random. By understanding the relationship between the two parts of a sign, langue and parole create meaning. Therefore, de Saussure spoke heavily on the importance of understanding the langue of a language, especially a foreign one, than to grow the vocabulary of parole. By approaching a nonnative language as such, the speaker increases his or her ability to make sense equal to that of a native speaker. Language acts as a link that allows thought to be expressed through sound. As thoughts become more coherent, thus leading to the creation of sounds in words and phrases, language ... Warren Hollister et al., eds, Medieval Europe: A Short Source Book (New york, N.Y.: McGraw Hill, 1982; 4th ed.2002), 17 19. The City of God is written by Augustine, the Bishop of Hippo, in the early fifth century of the current era. The writings of Augustine deal with the intellectual problems Christians faced. Augustine lived in a time where the Roman Empire was in decline. King Alaric sacked Rome with his army of Visigoths. Augustine wrote about how Christians should lead their lives for the purpose of God. His writing engaged people to live a spiritually driven life, and not one driven by earthly desires. People were not to worry about the invading armies which threatened the falling Roman Empire, since they did not change their path to a great life after death. Augustine challenged the claims of pagans, including those who sacked Rome. He wished to refute the claims which accused the Christian God as the source of turmoil in Rome. Augustine assured his fellow Christians , through his writing, of the false notions these pagans believed in. Furthermore, he showed the way in which pagans worshipped their gods, including the practice of offering sacrifices, was not the way to eternal salvation. In a time of Chaos and uncertainty, Christians could look to Augustine s writing in order to find solace in their faith. Therefore, the invaders held no power over them, since ... • 34. The Old Private Pension System The old private pension system was created in the 1920 s and expanded throughout the 30 s and 40 s (McDonnell). Private pensions were considered one of the three income sources for retired elderly. Originally, private pensions had defined benefits. The employer and employee would agree to a percentage of salary that the employee would receive from the company annually during retirement. Contractually obligated, this placed the liability onto the employer. Estimates say that employees could receive around 40% of their last year s salary as annual income with defined benefits. In the 1990 s, the pension plans gradually changed from defined benefits to defined contribution. The employees, rather than negotiating retirement salary now determine the amount of their salary that will be saved in a retirement fund. Retirement income is a burden on the employee rather than employer (Ghilarducci 8). In order to equal the income of the old plans, employees give their retirement savings to mutual funds that invest in the stock market. While a key aspect of retirement, the system has evolved like most economic institutions, favoring the wealthy and established. Furthermore, the private pension system contributes to a market bubble, putting money into the stock market regardless of market strength. These two problems cause the modern pension system to be flawed and unstable. The program must undergo drastic reform in order to save private pensions. It is evident that the current pension ... Exegesis and Critique of Nietzsche s Conception of Guilt In The Second Essay of On the Genealogy of Morality In the Second Essay of On the Genealogy of Morals (titled Guilt, Bad Conscience, and the Like ), Nietzsche formulates an interesting conception of the origin and function of guilt feelings and bad conscience. Nietzsche s discussion of this topic is rather sophisticated and includes sub arguments for the ancient equivalence of the concepts of debt and guilt and the existence of an instinctive joy in cruelty in human beings, as well as a hypothesis concerning the origin of civilization, a critique of Christianity, and a comparison of Christianity to ancient Greek religion. In this essay, I will attempt to distill these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is important to note that, according to Nietzsche, no moral condemnation was involved in these punishments for transgression of the morality of mores. Rather, transgressors were viewed merely as threats and obstacles in the path to the goal of the state. Thus, transgressors were punished merely out of anger at the injury done, rather than out of moral indignation or attempt to reform the criminal, while the goal of awakening guilt in criminals not only was not held by these rulers, but would have been regarded by them as nonsensical (2.4). At this juncture Nietzsche puts forth the creditor/debtor relationship as an analogy to the relationship between citizen and state after the latter s establishment. According to this analogy the citizen and state have entered into an agreement in which the state promises various advantages of civilization, which are numerous and profound, in return for obedience on the part of the citizen. When a citizen disobeys, the state s punishment is meted out with the cruel anger of an aggrieved creditor (2.9). Significantly, according to Nietzsche, the arousal of guilt feelings in the transgressor is not an effect of this punishment. Instead, punishment s only result is to increase the greater prudence and fear of the transgressor. Nietzsche brings forth several pieces of evidence in support of this claim. The first of these is that prisons are far from being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All these views bear the mark of his distinctively strong empiricism. We might think, on the basis of this last notion, that Gassendi has a good enough seventeenth century grasp of inductivist logic, and that it s rather deductivist logic he doesn t fully understand. Yet, while something is surely amiss in calling deductivist inference probabilistic , it seems Gassendi has hit upon a now familiar, sensible point that the use of deductive reasoning in empirical contexts, while providing certain formal guarantees, does not insulate empirical arguments from judgement by the measure of belief we invest in their premises. Such a view is possible for Gassendi to begin with because he is among those early Moderns who allow that we may have warrant for claims though we are not certain of them; this is the degrees of belief concept which figures prominently in the development of modern probability theory. Seismic waves are classified in two areas P waves, which are your compressional waves, and S waves, which are shear waves. These waves are used in detection and location of earthquakes.
