The Use Of Surveillance As A Mechanism Of Control
The use of Surveillance as a Mechanism of Control Elen1003 Project 2; Topic No. 2; Tutor:
Deneo Mfenyana 1036603 James Phillips Surveillance is an extremely effective mechanism to
control a large group of people or society in our modern world. This method of control can prove
to have a strong effect on a person s sense of privacy and can induce a strong sense of fear and
anxiety. There are various methods from which government agents can monitor a group of
people. In the novel, 1984 by George Orwell, these methods and theories are depicted very well.
These methods include, the use of Telescreens (similar to CCTV), spying organizations
including undercover police, and a psychological mechanism of anxiety, called the Panopticon
Effect . George Orwell s 1984, is not a prediction of how he thought that we would live in 1984,
but is a warning of what can happen, if we allow a dictatorship or totalitarian state to take control
In general, citizens of a country may be prone to accept certain methods of control, provided that
their country is able to justify valid reasons for it. This has been implemented in the past, for
example, during the Great Depression, the citizens of America had to accept methods such as
rationing, as it was the only way to be able to access basic needs in times of no money and jobs
(Rationing and Scrap Drives in Rural America, no date). The citizens may be told that surveillance
will be in their best interest that it will protect them and

Volunder Use In German Mythology
As I stared into the raging fire I felt the pulsing heat of it on my skin, patiently waiting for the
metal to get to the right temperature, after what felt like hours I started to hammer out the metal
but with every strike sweat poured out of my body the weight of the hammer felt like a ton when
it was only 10 lb, then I looked up to wipe my brow of sweat, now realizing it was the middle of the
night so I set the next ironbar in forge and added some coal then turned back to my work, I picked
up the sword and set it in a pot of oil for a split second hardening the metal as I poled it out the

The Eiffel tower is made of a material called wrought iron/pudding iron it is a mixture of iron ore
and 0.08percent carbon which is a combination of coal and iron put into a bloomer pretty much a
small forge. The Eiffel tower was built by a company called Gustave which was named after the
owner of the company that signed the contract to create the Eiffel tower the name of the man was
Gustave Eiffel who introduced the idea during the world fair of 1889. The tower weighs about
10,100 lb but contains about 7,000 metric tons of pudding iron/wrought iron, But that was just in
the planning stage it took thirty years of his life to building the actual tower. Although during
the world fair of 1886 Gustave Eiffel introduce the idea of the statue of liberty the origin of the
statue of liberty is to celebrate the alliance between America and France during the revolutionary
war the actual statue of liberty was created by a man named FrГ©dГ©ric Auguste Bartholdi but
the metal framework was made by Gustave Eiffel that was just under the copper coat the statue
took about 9 years to build, Gustave started working on the statue in 1885 which went entail
1894 but they had to take it apart into about 340 pieces to fit it on boats to send it to America but
then it took 4 months to rebuild. Following the Eiffel tower the iron pillar of Delhi has been

Demographic Transition and Environmental Timeline of...
Demographic and Environmental Timeline
Demographic transition is the process by which a nation/country moves from high birth rate and
high death rates to low birth and low death rates as the growth population in the interim (Weeks,
2005). Some of the nations that have gone through this transitions are; Canada, Germany, United
States and England. The demographic transition to an industrialized society is harmful to the
environment. Industrialized countries also have the largest ecological and carbon footprint
comparative to developing/non industrialized nations. Nevertheless, demographic transitions have
some notable advantages. Countries that have gone through demographic transitions have low birth

Hitler can reduce the number of unemployment from 6 million in 1933 to 2.6 million in December

Changing Population Size: With the signing of Versailles treaty in 1919, the population size is on
the increase as the country is stable due to the peaceful agreement. Besides, the nation is becoming
industrialized as it started some activities such as mining hence people are confident of residing in
Germany.
Birth and Death Rates: During this period, there are high birth rates compared to death rates
following the end of the world wars. Peace is slowly coming in the country thus encouraging
women to bear children once more.
Environmental Impact: Environmental impact is on the increase due to Industrialization. The
nation is advancing slowly in technology.

citizens from going to West Germany. Another historical change was the voting system that
changed the voting age from 21 to 18 years (Coy, 1970). The Social Democratic Federal
Chancellor Willy Brandt leads the West in easing tension with the East. He kneels in Warsaw
before the memorial for the victims of Jewish uprising as a symbol of a German plea for
reconciliation. However, subsequent terrorist acts followed which made Germany to debate on the

Analysis Of The Movie Butterfield Stars Essay
Butterfield stars as Bruno, a curious, stubborn eight year old whose family is relocated to the
countryside when his father receives a new job as a head member of the Nazi party, working for
the Auschwitz Birkenau concentration camp. Lonely and frustrated from having no one his
own age to talk to, Bruno explores past the limits of his backyard. He comes across a barbed
wire fence, with a young boy named Schmuel (played by Scanlon) on the other side wearing
what Bruno perceives to be striped pajamas. The two boys strike up a friendship through the
fence, with Bruno coming to visit Shmuel almost daily. Neither boy grasps that Schmuel is in a
death camp, and when Schmuel confesses to Bruno that he is Jewish, Bruno doesn t not seem to
understand why that matters. Curious as to what really lies on the other side of the fence, Bruno
and Schmuel plot for him to sneak into the camp, which leads to the demise of both of them. The
film is more emotion based rather than fact based, in an attempt to appeal to the audiences
symphonies rather than instruct them on a historical event. It has been criticized for its accuracy,
specifically pertaining to the ages of the boys. Many critics claim that boys as young as Schmuel
would never have been at Auschwitz, because all children too young to work were gassed upon
arrival. Others argue that the film is symbol of innocence, and the two boys reflect how children
are able to look past each other s differences easier than adults. Critics also

Betrayal In Othello And Jane Austen s Persuasion
Thesis: Betrayal is a common factor in many pieces of literature including Shakespeare s
Othello, William Blake s A Poison Tree, and Jane Austen s Persuasion. Questions: What
spawned the first acts of betrayal? The first acts of betrayal in Othello and A Poison Tree occur
before the story starts. Iago in Othello s eyes was a dear friend and honest man that would never
betray him, however as the story progresses the reader finds out that Iago is holding a grudge
against Othello for passing him up for a position he was more than qualified to hold. This occurs
frequently today where a highly qualified person may be passed up for a position that was given to
a man with connections. In A Poison Tree the speaker is upset with someone dear to him about
something that happens before the story begins. Similar to modern times a person in a relationship
may loose trust in their significant other due to a miscommunication where the victim may not
know what happened exactly but still may feel betrayed. Each incident starts a chain reaction that
helps the plot move forward.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only thing the reader is able to collect is that the speaker is upset with someone before hand
and is trying to deal with his inner termoil. Where as Iago felt betrayed from the very beginning
putting him in the mindset of a villian scorned. Othello s betrayal sets the stories antagonists
into motion giving him the motivation to plot against everyone else. In A Poison Tree the same
thing takes place, the narrorator is put into the thoughts of his enemies demise. Unlike Othello
the speaker in A Poison Tree tries to keep himself from going down the dark path whereas Iago
embraces his darker side. Nowadays a majority of people would try to be more like the speaker in A
Poison Tree and try to be more forgiving, however there are some who take Iago s path and seek

Hiroshima is one of the saddest and terrifying attack in human history. Some people say we

we had to do. They shouldn t have dropped the second bomb, but I am for dropping the first one.
Afterall, it was war, many good things came out of it, but at a high price. The bombs we dropped
ended the war, it triggered Japan to surrender. Which gave us peace, the fear of the bomb brought

Stereotyping Is A Natural Instinct That Humans
Historically, humans have always been separated into groups based on appearance, whether that is
concerning body shape, the clothes we wear, or the color of our skin. Stereotyping is a natural
instinct that humans have because they feel the need to classify people in order to not feel
threatened by them. Humans feel an obligation to know and understand people but do not
necessarily want to be associated with them, thus they place people into specific groups, labeling
them. One of the primary ways that we stereotype people is by their race. Being a minority that has
always been prejudiced against in America, African Americans are often judged because of the way
that they speak. Black students have struggled in academic settings that use Standard English, such
as in the common American classroom. African AmericanVernacular English (AAVE) harms Black
students through discrimination on standardized tests and in classroom environments.
AAVE is a variation of what is commonly referred to as Standard English, and is predominantly
spoken by African American communities across the United States. Unlike many other variations
of English, AAVE is not regional so African Americans speak more or less the same way all across
the country. These sociolinguistic parallels are because African Americans are oriented to a sense
of ethnic solidarity and nation wide cohesiveness due to their extensive history of fighting in unity
for the same victories (Fought, 2003). The possibility that AAVE

Menopause Case Summary
The goals of treatments for L.L. are to prevent or reduce vasomotor symptoms associated with her
menopause and to stop or slow the progression of osteoporosis. It is also important to improve her
control of hypothyroidism.
If the patient doesn t present contraindications to therapy and predisposing disease or risks that
would increase the likelihood of an adverse event, I would recommend L.L. hormone replacement
therapy (HRT) for her postmenopausal symptoms and bone loss. A consensus statement made by

is unable to tolerate hormone therapy, I would suggest antidepressants to treat her vasomotor
symptoms. Both selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin norepinephrine
reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), which target neurotransmitters involved in the hypothalamic
thermoreguration center, have been found to reduce both the severity and frequency of hot flashes
(Dickson, 2012). Venlafaxine, desvenlafaxine, and paroxetine have been found to provide the best
vasomotor symptom relief among these drug classes. Alendronate sodium is approved by the
FDA for the prevention and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis (Cosman et al., 2014).
These antiresorptive agents work by inhibiting osteoclast mediated bone resorption, which leads to
an indirect increase in bone mineral density (Maxwell, Maclayton, Nguyen, 2008). It is also
important to assess L.L. s vitamin D level and correct it if necessary. Vitamin D is essential for the
absorption of calcium, and it helps regulate calcium and phosphorus metabolism. Calcium and
vitamin D in combination have a distinct effect on bone physiology (Maxwell et al., 2008). The
combination of supplemental calcium and vitamin D may be beneficial for L.L. to improve her bone

Allen Slate-Personal Narrative
As one drives up the California coast, they will begin to notice several things. First, the general
atmosphere shifts. The further north they travel from Los Angeles palms and golden beaches, the
cities begin to lose their positive, sunny vibes. They go from beach villas to industrial apartments
to suburban neighborhoods to run down harbor towns. The positive emotional vibrations emitted
from such architecture slowly surrenders its grip on its surroundings to a grim, hopeless one. As
new, booming cities fade into sleepy and ancient villages only occupied by drunken sailors and lost
tourists, the traveler will soon realize they are in a much less pleasant place as where they
originated their journey.
Secondly, the traveler will notice the fog. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

His younger self collapsed to the ground like a ragdoll dropped form a little girl s hand. Another
scratch ticket appeared in Allen s hand.
God s dice chose her. You couldn t stop it. You never really had control, did you? You have lived
your life running from chance, uncertainty, luck. You thought that by running from it, you could
avoid it.
The door swung open again. The homeless man walked in, holding a lottery ticket. Blood stained
his fingerless gloves.
His skin was pale and raw, shackles attached to broken chains were wrapped around his neck and
wrists.
His eyes were glowing white. A pair of horns had sprouted from he head.
He read the card aloud, his voice cutting through the air and filling the room like coastal mist.
The words reverberated in Allen s skull. He stared down at his hands as his palms bubbled black
like tar.
He felt vertigo as his neck snapped backwards.
His vision turned red. His eyes rolled back.
The demonic words played one more time in his head. Hear that? that s the sound your fate. The

Emily In Emily Faulkner s A Rose For Emily
A Rose for Emily illustrate love, disappointment of life, grief, death, and rejection that Emily has
received throughout her life; as a young woman in her time. Emily is not able to be herself in an
era where women had an important role in society. She was expected to be the one person that
the town wanted. She was expected to be proper, outstanding, and punctual. She wanted to be
herself and not have someone always looking over her shoulder. So throughout the story the
town people whisper about her in the hopes it wouldn t get back to her. The narrators of this
story are from the perspective of how they see her. Emily is different in a time when difference
is not ratified or accepted. When Emily finally passed away all of the town went to her funeral,
which was held in her home. The last type of star home for the period of time. It was a big,
squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled
balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies. (Faulkner 861). No one had been in
her house, besides the old man servant that would take care of her, for 10 years. After Emily s
Father died she received notifications of her past due balances to pay her taxes. She never left the
house and when the mayor and aldermen, or the younger generation, came over to see her in her
home she was surprised to see them because she lived in isolation for 10 years after her father
died. When mayor and alderman got there they had

caught between their aging parents and young children. Adults who are part of the Sandwich

Economic Consequences Of The Black Death
2. Outline the main short term and longer term economic consequences of the Black Death. Which
was the most significant?
The devastating consequences of the Black Death, which was at its peak between 1346 and
1353, did not cease after the period had ended. The Black Death caused the death of about a
third of Europe s population, with some places, such as Florence losing as much as two thirds of
its population. With a smaller population, Europe saw a short term rise in jobs available for
peasants and, with labourers needing to compete to keep the few workers they had, a subsequent
rise in their wages. Further, for many peasants and others who did not own land, living conditions
improved, as with more housing available, and with more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, each of the short term and long term consequences did not occur in isolation. Rather, they
occurred one after the other, with each new consequence having been affected by the one before it.
It is in this sense, then, that each of the consequences of the Black Death were equally significant in
fuelling the change in economy throughout Europe.
4. What is the principle of attachment ? Give two examples of how it functioned in the exploration
of the New World.
The principle of attachment, as first noted by the historian Anthony Pagden, is able to be
identified in many primary sources from the period of exploration. The principle of attachment
occurs when a known, understood and believed action is combined with an unknown action that
is foreign to the person employing it. This is often done in order to reconcile new actions, or
places, with the person s own beliefs. In the exploration of the New World, the principle of
attachment occurred largely due to the concept of otherness . This is because, the European view
of native peoples as uncivilised, bestial, and savage made the use of native techniques unlikely,
even when the native methods appeared effective. Instead, the steps in Pagden s principle of
attachment were employed so that explorers could thrive in a new land, while continuing to
embody European ideals.

Active Shooter
Active School Shooter Introduction The intention of this paper is to look at and present some
issues and strategies that members of a school community think about when trying to create
safer schools. Particularly when addressing an active shooter in a school setting. A major issue
to consider when trying to keep all schools safe, is the simple fact that no two schools are the
same. Understanding this can lead us to the conclusion that it is impossible to have one global
plan or program that can be 100% effective in all schools. Violence prevention programs work
best when they incorporate multiple strategies and address the full range of possible acts of
violence in schools. For any set of policies to work, it must be established and... Show more content

It would be a wise idea for school administrators to have a comprehensive security assessment of
the school s physical design, safety policies, and emergency procedures. Once again this must be
conducted with the cooperation of school staff, emergency personnel, students, and other school
community members. Every school has different needs and safety plans may vary. According to
the IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police), there are twenty recommended actions
that can be used to prevent violence in a school setting. 1. Use school resource officers (SROs)
who may be provided by local law enforcement. SROs often provide law enforcement, law related
counseling, and law related education to students, faculty, and staff. Continuity of officers in
individual schools should be encouraged, so that students and SROs develop a rapport. 2.
Consider seeking one or more probation officers for use on campus to help supervise and counsel
students. This would be especially appropriate for high schools with a significant caseload of
juveniles on probation. 3. Use trained personnel paid or volunteer selected specifically to assist
teachers and administrators in monitoring student behavior and activities. Continuity of monitors
within schools should be encouraged to facilitate good rapport with students. Monitors should be
trained on the different types of violence likely to occur in the

The Skippers In The Canterbury Tales
Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales in a collection of 24 stories while on a pilgrimage
to visit the relics of Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. The purpose behind this
pilgrimage is for the pilgrims to visit the shrine to seek forgiveness for their sins. Due to the long
trip, the host made a deal with everyone to tell two stories on the way and back from Canterburyand
whoever tells the best one receives a paid for meal. Each character telling their stories gives away
bits of information and a visual idea of who they really are. In The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer uses
detail, point of view, and descriptive language to portray the Pardoner and Summoner to be worse
than the Skipper.
The Skipper begins to tell his tale by bringing light to his past and the battles he has fought in
using details. Chaucer wrote, When he fought, the enemy vessel sank, he sent his prisoners home.
(409) to give a visual of the Skippers performance in battle. In this quote Chaucer portrays the
skipper as a pirate but merciful to the people who has already defeated and and took from. He was
confident throughout his battle, never letting up until he felt like the overall goal was met. Another
example describes his demeanor and how he presents himself, Hardy he was, prudent in
undertaking. (415) during the time of his battles. In this quote Chaucer uses detail to characterize
the Skipper as confident and cautious about every move he made on and off the battlefield. It was

European Union And The European Crisis
Since the inception of the European Union, it has been plagued with numerous problems and
currently it is facing in of the biggest problems right after dealing with an economy in recession to
a point where Greece had to be bailed out. There is unrest like none other among the European
Union member countries to withdrawing from the union led by the United Kingdom. This is in the
wake of eastern European being buried in civil war as is the case with Ukraine and the war

Cultural differences
The European Union is comprised of member countries that have and practice different cultures
and this brings about an effect on how they associate with each other. This divides are along

how liberal the countries are in a quest to ensure that they remain in line with their citizens beliefs.

The Band Called Greenday
Wind back to 1994, the band Green Day were topping the charts with their catchy punk rock tunes.
Leading the way for Punk Rock culture, they were youths and 20 somethings outlet for expressing
their frustration and angst with puberty, adolescence and the beginning of adulthood. Each day
society would see another kid ending up as a victim of a broken or abusive home, leaving the

generation of youth strongly identified with the Punk Rockscene and culture that was home to
bands like Green Day. Their lyrics and musical style portrayed feeling of being alone in their

Rough Draft: Rhetorical Analysis Essay
David Eggers, in Zeitoun, shows a story of a Muslim American family living through many
challenges. After 9/11 Muslim families, like the Zeitouns, face many problems living in America.
Eggers wants to inform other Americans on the situation of Muslim living in the United States,
present day. People who are uneducated about the Muslim religion need to be informed on how
similar lives are of other people all around the United States. These people throw out stereotypes and
aim judgments wrongly at the Zeitoun family. Unjust treatment of the Zeitoun family is a cause of

There are many examples of pathos in Zeitoun because Eggers uses a lot of charged language,
stories, and objects that create an emotion in the readers.
There is less of the logical appeal, logos, in Zeitoun but Eggers does present it. Using cause and
effect, comparisons, and statistics, Eggers supports his argument through this logical appeal. An
example of cause and effect would be the 9/11 example. Since this tragedy happen, many more
stereotypes were brought upon Muslims, especially those living in America. After 9/11, Zeitoun
found it more difficult to live in New Orleans. The cause was 9/11 and the effect was how the
Muslim Americans were treated after the happening. Eggers also makes comparisons between the
Muslim religion and the Christian view. These facts appeal to the reader s intelligence and could
also build upon their education of each religion. When Kathy is converting, Eggers states the
similarities of each religion; At first she was simply intrigued by the basic things she didn t know,
and the many things she d wrongly presumed. She had no idea, for instance, that the Qur an was
filled with the same people as the Bible (Eggers, 61). Eggers goes on to compare Christianity to the
Muslim faith, and points out that there are many different types of Muslims just like there are
many types of Christians. Along with comparisons, the book has many statistics referencing to the
hurricane. An example would be, by date, the death toll when Kathy is waiting

Causes Of Child Solider In A Long Way Gone
Youth are a vital site for understanding nation and globalization. (Shepler, Youthscapes, p. 122)
One of the topic is child soldiers. Some people believe that child soldier is just a tragedy of wars.
However, understanding the war as a crisis of youth does not mean just understanding RUF
rebels and their reasons for revolt. We must strive to understand the situation of a whole
generation defined by political and economic disenfranchisement. (Shepler, Youthscapes, p. 125)
In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael Beach was joined the rebel to avenge the deaths of (my) family
and to survive. (Beach, A Long Way Gone, p.199) Similar to Ishmael, some children joined the
rebels as a means of assuring their own survival. (Shepler, Youthscapes, p. 124) However, there

Marine Corps Hymn
The Marine Corps Hymn
One of the best known of the official military songs is the Marine Corps Hymn. And yet, no one
knows who made it or exactly how old it is. Legend has it that it dates back to the Mexican
American War (1846 1848). It wasn t officially copyrighted until 1917 when W.E. Christian
published it in the book Rhymes of Rookies (Gutenberg.org). Even though we don t know its
exact origin, we do know what the song stands for and what it means. The hymn praises the
idealism of the Marine Corps and also looks back on historic moments Marines have dealt with and
overcome.
Different parts of the Hymn refer to specific historical events. The first line From the halls of
Montezuma refers to when the Marines captured Chapultepec Castle in 1847 during the
Mexican American War. The castle was in the heart of Mexico City, Mexico s capital. It served
as a military academy and also offered protection to the rest of the city. After its capture the treaty
of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed and the war was over (history.com). This was one of the
bloodiest battles in Marine Corps history and the red stripe called blood stripes on the Marines
dress uniform is to commemorate the bloodshed during the battle. It signifies the tenacity of the
Marines who won despite being outnumbered by the Mexicans.
The second line to the shores of Tripoli refers to the First Barbary War(1801 1805), which was the
first war the United States had declared on foreign land and seas. Specifically,

/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stellar_evolution
Abstract (summar of paper) When observing a star, the lager it is the shorter its life is going to
be. The smaller it is the longer the life. Shorter life is not saying much though, as the most massive
stars live for billions of years. When a star reaches about middle age, it starts fusing hydrogen into
helium. Once it has run out of usable hydrogen that it can convert into helium, it can then take on
one of several paths. It can lead to white dwarfs, novae, supernovae, neutron stars or even black
holes.

Type II supernovaes, which are more common, occurs when a star runs out of nuclear fuel and
collapses under its own gravity. In a Type II supernovae, once the star s core surpasses a certain
mass (The Chandrasekhar limit) the star begins to impolode. The core then heats up and becomes
denser. Eventually the implosion bounces back off the core, expelling the stellar material into
space. What s left is a neutron star.
Type I supernovaes lack a hydrogen signature in their light spectra. These type of supernovae are
generally thought to originate from white dwarf stars in a close binary system. As the gas of the
copanion star accumulates onto the white dwarf, the white dwarf is progressively compressed, and
eventually sets off a runaway nuclear reaction inside that eventually leads to a cataclysmi supernova
outburst.

Chaldeans In America
A refugee is generally thought of as an individual who flees their country due to (but not limited to)
racial, religious, or ideological persecution. These people often leave war torn countries where
violence and tyranny strips the very freedoms and opportunities that are the inalienable backbone of
the United States. It is no surprise, then, that immigrants from every stretch of the planet have
settled in America, freely practicing their beliefs and often playing a critical role in the
entrepreneurial development of our capitalist foundation. One such group is the Chaldeans. Hailing
from small villages in the north of Iraq a place historically referred to as Mesopotamia where the
ancient Babylonians once made their home, the Chaldeans are a Catholic group of people who

Essay On The Causes Of The Civil War
Civil War noun a war between political factions or regions within the same country. The regions in
the Civil War of 1860 that took place in 1860 1864 were the North and the South. They had
different beliefs that eventually sent them into war. The 3 main causes of this civil war were: states
rights, economy, and most importantly, slavery.
The first of the three main causes is states rights. The south believed they had the right to take their
slaves to the new states being admitted into the Union. In the secession document written by the
State of Virginia, it says, Powers granted under the said Constitution were derived from the people
and To the oppression of the southern slave holding states. This means that the state of Virginia...

From the article, Economics and the civil war Schulman points out, Southern planters were
concerned that high tariffs might make their European trading partner, primarily the British, raise
prices on manufactured goods imported by the south in order to maintain a profit on trade. The
south were afraid of high tariffs since they could hurt them financially in business (Schulman). Also
from the article 1828 Tariff of Abominations Alchin says The South, who had once favored Henry
Clay s Tariff 1816 and his American System which financed the construction of new roads into the
west, now opposed both. To explain, The south were originally for the Tariff and American System
but now did not like either since they help them and only hurt them (Alchin).
The view on tariffs was much different in the north though, they viewed them as good and helpful
since the tariffs did not really affect them other than help. In the article, Economics and the Civil

tariffs would make imported goods more expensive. Tariffs that were high would promote
American goods by making European goods seem more expensive (Schulman). The article 1828

Axillary Bud Strengths
From the results, the data collected for the 500 ppm group is too insignificant to supply any
concluding evidence because its confidence interval and standard deviation doubled that of the 0
ppm and 5000 ppm groups . However, using Table 2 the only statistically significant data acquired
in the 500 ppm group as determined by the Wilcoxon test in Table 1 the 500 ppm group had some
axillary bud growth, but this growth was significantly stunted compared to the axillary bud length
of the 0 ppm group.
The 0 ppm group experienced little to no effects on their axillary/lateral bud growth since the
confidence interval predicted a range of growth between 300 mm and 500 mm. Also, the 0 ppm
group had the highest mean, x М…=396.73 mm, and the lowest standard deviation, Пѓ_0=48.531
mm (as observed in Tables 2 and 3). This was expected, though, since the 0 ppm treatment did not

Additionally, the 0 ppm group grew normally, the 500 ppm group had slightly stunted axillary
bud growth, and the 5000 ppm group had little to no axillary bud growth. Therefore, my
hypothesis was validated and supported by the data collected. The data I collected makes sense
because I suspected that, if auxin concentration has an inverse effect on axillary bud growth, then
as more auxin is applied apically, less bud growth will occur. These are the exact results I

of the causes of this growth was experimental error or genetic mutations in the plants tested.
Otherwise, I think the results for this experiment were successful in proving my hypothesis and

The Abrahamic Religions, Judaism, Christianity, And Islam
The Abrahamic religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are the three key Western Religions
that all emphasize monotheism, achieving peace though justice, God s love and mercy, all three
trace their lineage back to Abraham in some way, even though he was first mentioned in the
Hebrew Bible. These three religions are very closely unified because they share many common
beliefs and thoughts, and they all rely on holy books or scriptures as a life guided tool. While
these religions do have a lot of the same beliefs, some are conflicting, which is what makes them
their own unique religions. Christianityis the world s most popular and practiced religion.
Christianity originated in the city of Jerusalem in present day Israel, where Jesusministered and was
later crucified. Jerusalem and Bethlehem are considered the holiest places in Christianity. The
founder of Christianity, Jesus Christ, was born in the small town of Bethlehem to a virgin named
Mary, just a few miles southwest of Jerusalem.(MacCulloch ,36 37) The Christian religion is
centered around the idea that Jesus is the son of God, the messiah. The religion itself is based on
the life and teachings of Jesus. It is believed that Jesus was crucified and died for the sins of
others, and that he rose from the dead. Christians study the Holy Bibleand consider it to be a
record of the relationship between God and mankind.. Christianity is considered to be an
Abrahamic religion because Abraham is believed to be a religious

The Mind-Body Problem Of Spinoza And Hobbes
This is the first portion of the circle it is the same as listening to Beethoven s Moonlight Sonata and
recognizing the musical terms, the process and techniques he uses and most importantly the soul of
the music and how to define it. Each creating their own varying opinions about the music each with
a partial truth relating back to the soul of the music.
You see through the ages of philosophythere have been many debates and opinions. Yet it is those
opinions that are the most radical that demand the most attention. On that note, we will address two
radical philosophizers: Spinoza and Hobbes. Specifically there theory s pertaining to matter and the
mind body problem posed by Descartes. As such we will first address Hobbes then move to Spinoza
and end with a combined statement on matter. Therefore we must begin by introducing Thomas
Hobbes.
Thomas Hobbes solution on the mind body problem is one of a combination. Hobbes posits that
rather than mind and body being two separate things they actually are both the same thing, matter.
He confronts Descartes by saying that the thing that is thinking and the action of thinking are not
the same things. If this is true then according to his logic we must conclude that a thinking thing is
something corporeal. This is because it seems that the subjects of all actions are comprehensible
only if they are conceived as corporeal or material. Essentially stating that the material body is the
only substance there is. To boot thoughts are

Chippewa Indian Culture
The clothing of the Chippewa Indians was oftentimes made of animal skin. The tendons were
taken from the animals and used as thread for the clothing that the Chippewa wore. The men
wore a long piece of animal skin or cloth between their legs and belted it at the hips. The flaps
then covered the front and behind of the men. Leggings were worn by both women and men and
sometimes they were covered with fancy fringe. The leggings were created from animal skin and
therefore were quite insulating during the cold winters. Women sometimes wore long skirts over
the top of their leggings. Women wore a thin blouse, basically like a poncho, that included a cut
out at the neck for the head to go through. Fancy aprons were worn on special occasions. The
Chippewa men wore headdresses made of stiff porcupine hair. These headdresses closely relate the
Chippewa to the Mohawk and Mohicans. Women kept their hair long in length and braided it, with
pieces of cloth and shells intermingled in them. Jewelry was something very important in the
Chippewa culture. They wore copper bracelets and beaded necklaces. Also important in the

The Invisible Boundary Analysis
The Invisible Boundary The main point of this chapter was to show the reader or the students
how much the life of the human being is affected by privilege. Even though everyone say that
you get to what you want because of how hard you work. After reading this chapter, I learned
that it is also the privileges that you have is what helps you to get what you want or achieve
your goal. Moreover, having privileges or being a part of a majority group rather than a minor
group makes life a little easier. This chapter taught be that not all the privileged people are racist.
In the chapter, Jim was white, tall male, he got football scholarships to go to college. Being a
white tall male is a privilege. It made it so easy for Jim to work hard and get to higher potions in
his career and make more money. When there could have been a white woman or a Black male
that work as hard as Jim but did not get higher positions or higher payment as Jim. From the
reading, I understood that it is difficult for non privilege people to be where Jim is at. Because they
are not as privileged as Jim. Privilege people would have to work twice or more than twice as hard
than privileged people to show their leaders or bosses that they are capable of being in charge....

Apache Prisoners of War
The Chiricahuas, who were once one of the most feared Native American tribes of the southwest,
became prisoners of war by the United States for a period of twenty seven years. This period of
time was the longest captivity a Native American tribe had ever been imprisoned. The Chiricahuas
imprisonment began in 1886, when the United States Army transported four hundred Native
Americans from San Carlos and Fort Apache reservations to army posts in Florida (Davis). By
1887, the bulk of the Chiricahuas had been transported to the Mount Vernon barracks in Alabama,
and the rest of the dislocated band of Chiricahuas, including the now famous Geronimo were

General Crook relied heavily on Chiricahuas turned into scouts since no white man could ever track

of Geronimo, which then convinced the proud but, weary leader to turn him into authorities.
General Crook had since resigned and his replacement, General Nelson Miles, finally captured
the great Geronimo (Davis). General Miles had promised the great leader that all the Chiricahua
families would be imprisoned together to further reduce the risk for more conflict. Miles then
took it a step further and suggested to the Secretary of War, William C. Endicott, to imprison the
Chiricahua scouts that had helped to capture Geronimo, for fear that the former scouts could not
be trusted. Geronimo was separated from his family and sent to live at Fort Pickens. The
seventeen other families that were hiding with him at the time of his surrender were sent to live at
Fort Marion, where disease and lack of nutrition were a huge fallacy for life in that area (Davis).
By April 1887, a formal report of these conditions were published that convinced President
Cleveland and the war department to move the Chiricahuas to the Mount Vernon Barracks.
The first Chiricahuas to arrive from Fort Marion, to Mount Vernon, set up camp in the forest right
outside the barrack s twelve foot brick walls. The prisoners were not actually imprisoned in a cell

yonder ruttin on my Mayella (Lee 231)! Mayella even said that He got me round the neck,
cussin me a sayin dirt I fought and hollered, but he had me round the neck. He hit me agin a agin
(Lee 241). Both Mayella and Bob Ewell make the people in the court believe that Tom is some
sort of killer or dangerous man who should be lynched. Even Scout thought that Tom Robinson s
powerful shoulders rippled under his thin shirt (Lee 248). Tom was very built, and that did not help
his case. Before Tom even gave his testimony most people in the court and jurybelieved he was
guilty. Furthermore, The public view of Tom Robinson also includes that he is an abusive man
that takes advantage of woman. Such as when Mayella said I got somethin to say a I ain t say no
more. That nigger yonder took advantage of me (Lee 251). After she said this, Tom became
known as a person who would hurt women in an appalling way. Another example is when
Atticus says Miss Mayella, not to be tedious, you ve testified that the defendant hit you, grabbed
you around the neck, choked you, and took advantage of you (Lee 248). Mayella states all of
these facts in her testimony; making Tom look like a untrustworthy man. One part of her story
states that she went in the house to get him the nickel and turned around an fore she knew it he
was on her . (Lee 241) . Mayella makes the chance of Tom being innocent lower with her lies; Tom
becomes a monster to the public view. On the other hand to some he is as innocent as a
mockingbird. These people know the real Tom Robinson. They belive that Tom is a generous and a
hardworking man. A quotation in the story that supports this is

Gun Control Under Control Essay
Gun Control Under Control
Whenever a shooting happens, such Columbine, the Aurora Theater Shooting, or the Navy Yard
shooting, the question of gun control comes up in politics again. Then after a month or two, the
topic is dropped, until yet another shooting happens. When is this nation going to finally make a
change? America needs to put more emphasis on making certain potential criminals and the
clinically insane do not have access to such dangerous weapons. What about the little boy who
found his parent s gun in his parent s bedside drawer and accidentally shot himself? Should there
not be laws to protect him? The answer is yes. The government needs to take guns out of the hands
of criminals and children and into the hands of people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The idea of redesigning guns is considered more with public safety due to the larger numbers of
gun related deaths (Now 3). What is so hard about making guns safer? If people are not willing to
make guns safer, which is obviously the case, then there should be gun controls. . Imagine how
many of these accidental deaths could be prevented if guns can be kept out of the hands of children
and the careless.
According to the NCIPC In 1994, there were 38,505 firearm related deaths. These included: more
than 17,800 homicides; more than 18,700 suicides; more than 1,300 unintentional, firearms related
deaths related to firearms (Facts 1). Some of the worst crimes are committed with guns. For
example, the shooting at Columbine which Americans heard about on the news in 1999. Two
teenagers shot and killed twelve students and one teacher at their own school (Facts 1). The boys
were later thought to be mentally ill, as with many of the people who commit shooting such as this.
Could this have been prevented through gun laws that require stricter background checks and better
mental health check ups? In an article by Craig R Whitney, he quotes LaPierre from NBC, We have
a mental health system in this country that has completely and totally collapsed. We have no
national database of these lunatics (Whitney 1). So many suicides and homicides could be
prevented with government mandated mental

The Characteristics Of My Virtual Child In My Virtual Child
With what I have learned from My Virtual Life, I now understand the complexities of raising
and guiding a child. Mere decisions made during infancy can affect a child s long term
physically, cognitively, and emotionally. To make important developmental decisions simply be
classified as a challenge, it is one of the hardest things parents experience. Making decisions for
one s self, opposed to making decisions to one s child is so challenging that most people will not
understand until they have kids themselves. My virtual child covers physical, social, emotional,
and cognitive development at several age levels. This gave me an opportunity to visualize the
whole child at various points in development. I raised a virtual child from birth to 18 years of
age. Each virtual child has a unique set of characteristics at birth, some of which were influenced
by how I answered the assessment I completed when I first logged onto My Virtual Child. These
characteristics gradually emerged and affected his behavior and development. In the virtual child
program I completed I gave birth to a healthy baby girl by the name of Shanti. I chose the name
Shanti because of the meaning. The meaning of Shanti in Hindi means peace, and bliss. When
Shanti was at about six years old, I gave birth to another baby girl and I named her Angeli meaning,
angel. During this whole experience, I was married and there was never any change in our marital
status while raising our virtual children. Throughout My

The Pros And Cons Of Animal Captivity
Captive animals are abused and exploited in a variety of settings, including research and product
testing, the entertainment industry, fur farms, and the exotic pet trade (Born Free USA). Zoos are
holding animals all around the world captive. Zoos are not letting them live in their natural habitats
and roam free. Captive animals are are not healthy and it s not good for the environment. For
example bornfreeusa.org states Every year, captive exotic animals are involved in incidents in
which humans are injured or even killed. Animalcaptivity should not be allowed. Captivity affects
animals mental health, they can t get enough exercise and food that they normally get, additionally,
these animals that are in captivity can get many diseases and could die. Animal captivity is

It is referred to as a repetitive locomotion stereotype. During the progression of the behavior over
time, the intensity changes. When the animal initially begins the pacing, they may be easily
distracted by sights or sounds. However, after some period of time, the animal may appear in a
trance, unable to break their pace or gaze. This is what we so often see in zoos the apparent
detachment from their environment (Di Lamont). This fact is stating how captivity could affect
animals mental health very strongly. Also, Zoos, contrary to what many people believe, often
cause great suffering and stress to the captive animals. Animals in zoos are caged for life and
deprived of the opportunity to develop and fulfill the full range of their interests and needs. They
lose control over their lives and the environment they live in. Social animals are often forced to
live in the misery of solitary confinement. Animals who would prefer to live alone are often forced
into close contact with others ( Zoos ). Animals suffer because of how different their

Argumentative Essay About Video Games
Video games are ubiquitous in modern life. It has not only been a source of entertainment, but also
played an important role in a child growth and brain development. Many parents have a bad
perspective towards video games, they consider it as a devil that corrupts mind and engages their
child into non productive, virtual, and harmful environment. Hence, they try to stop them
completely from playing games by all means. This kind of attitude and behavior from the parent
might not only effect their relationship with their child, but also deprive the child from some
advantages of playing video games that enhance brain power. Therefore, parents should allow their
children engage with video games in reasonable amount.
One main concern of parents is that their child would become an addict, and would not be able to
perform as a healthy successful individual in the society when they grow up. Indeed, intense and
prolong gaming will lead to addiction, which can decrease a person s productivity, and, disturbing
the daily routine, meaning they would stay up all night. However, to be called as an addict one
has to show characteristics of addiction, which is a factor of personal behavior, performance, etc.
In spite of the number of games available only, one out of ten regular gamer can be categorized as
game addicts (webpage), which indicates that not many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

takes all of their time, not being able to create new friendships. Indeed, most games played recently
are online games, which withhold large communities. These communities have enormous number
of members that interact together for many purposes. Therefore, gamers can find friends through
these communities. Another benefit these communities have is that they provided a medium for

  • 2. The Use Of Surveillance As A Mechanism Of Control The use of Surveillance as a Mechanism of Control Elen1003 Project 2; Topic No. 2; Tutor: Deneo Mfenyana 1036603 James Phillips Surveillance is an extremely effective mechanism to control a large group of people or society in our modern world. This method of control can prove to have a strong effect on a person s sense of privacy and can induce a strong sense of fear and anxiety. There are various methods from which government agents can monitor a group of people. In the novel, 1984 by George Orwell, these methods and theories are depicted very well. These methods include, the use of Telescreens (similar to CCTV), spying organizations including undercover police, and a psychological mechanism of anxiety, called the Panopticon Effect . George Orwell s 1984, is not a prediction of how he thought that we would live in 1984, but is a warning of what can happen, if we allow a dictatorship or totalitarian state to take control In general, citizens of a country may be prone to accept certain methods of control, provided that their country is able to justify valid reasons for it. This has been implemented in the past, for example, during the Great Depression, the citizens of America had to accept methods such as rationing, as it was the only way to be able to access basic needs in times of no money and jobs (Rationing and Scrap Drives in Rural America, no date). The citizens may be told that surveillance will be in their best interest that it will protect them and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Analysis Of The Movie Butterfield Stars Essay Butterfield stars as Bruno, a curious, stubborn eight year old whose family is relocated to the countryside when his father receives a new job as a head member of the Nazi party, working for the Auschwitz Birkenau concentration camp. Lonely and frustrated from having no one his own age to talk to, Bruno explores past the limits of his backyard. He comes across a barbed wire fence, with a young boy named Schmuel (played by Scanlon) on the other side wearing what Bruno perceives to be striped pajamas. The two boys strike up a friendship through the fence, with Bruno coming to visit Shmuel almost daily. Neither boy grasps that Schmuel is in a death camp, and when Schmuel confesses to Bruno that he is Jewish, Bruno doesn t not seem to understand why that matters. Curious as to what really lies on the other side of the fence, Bruno and Schmuel plot for him to sneak into the camp, which leads to the demise of both of them. The film is more emotion based rather than fact based, in an attempt to appeal to the audiences symphonies rather than instruct them on a historical event. It has been criticized for its accuracy, specifically pertaining to the ages of the boys. Many critics claim that boys as young as Schmuel would never have been at Auschwitz, because all children too young to work were gassed upon arrival. Others argue that the film is symbol of innocence, and the two boys reflect how children are able to look past each other s differences easier than adults. Critics also ... • 6. Betrayal In Othello And Jane Austen s Persuasion Thesis: Betrayal is a common factor in many pieces of literature including Shakespeare s Othello, William Blake s A Poison Tree, and Jane Austen s Persuasion. Questions: What spawned the first acts of betrayal? The first acts of betrayal in Othello and A Poison Tree occur before the story starts. Iago in Othello s eyes was a dear friend and honest man that would never betray him, however as the story progresses the reader finds out that Iago is holding a grudge against Othello for passing him up for a position he was more than qualified to hold. This occurs frequently today where a highly qualified person may be passed up for a position that was given to a man with connections. In A Poison Tree the speaker is upset with someone dear to him about something that happens before the story begins. Similar to modern times a person in a relationship may loose trust in their significant other due to a miscommunication where the victim may not know what happened exactly but still may feel betrayed. Each incident starts a chain reaction that helps the plot move forward.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 8. Stereotyping Is A Natural Instinct That Humans Historically, humans have always been separated into groups based on appearance, whether that is concerning body shape, the clothes we wear, or the color of our skin. Stereotyping is a natural instinct that humans have because they feel the need to classify people in order to not feel threatened by them. Humans feel an obligation to know and understand people but do not necessarily want to be associated with them, thus they place people into specific groups, labeling them. One of the primary ways that we stereotype people is by their race. Being a minority that has always been prejudiced against in America, African Americans are often judged because of the way that they speak. Black students have struggled in academic settings that use Standard English, such as in the common American classroom. African AmericanVernacular English (AAVE) harms Black students through discrimination on standardized tests and in classroom environments. AAVE is a variation of what is commonly referred to as Standard English, and is predominantly spoken by African American communities across the United States. Unlike many other variations of English, AAVE is not regional so African Americans speak more or less the same way all across the country. These sociolinguistic parallels are because African Americans are oriented to a sense of ethnic solidarity and nation wide cohesiveness due to their extensive history of fighting in unity for the same victories (Fought, 2003). Emily In Emily Faulkner s A Rose For Emily A Rose for Emily illustrate love, disappointment of life, grief, death, and rejection that Emily has received throughout her life; as a young woman in her time. Emily is not able to be herself in an era where women had an important role in society. She was expected to be the one person that the town wanted. She was expected to be proper, outstanding, and punctual. She wanted to be herself and not have someone always looking over her shoulder. So throughout the story the town people whisper about her in the hopes it wouldn t get back to her. The narrators of this story are from the perspective of how they see her. The devastating consequences of the Black Death, which was at its peak between 1346 and 1353, did not cease after the period had ended. The Black Death caused the death of about a third of Europe s population, with some places, such as Florence losing as much as two thirds of its population. With a smaller population, Europe saw a short term rise in jobs available for peasants and, with labourers needing to compete to keep the few workers they had, a subsequent rise in their wages. Give two examples of how it functioned in the exploration of the New World. The principle of attachment, as first noted by the historian Anthony Pagden, is able to be identified in many primary sources from the period of exploration. The principle of attachment occurs when a known, understood and believed action is combined with an unknown action that is foreign to the person employing it. This is often done in order to reconcile new actions, or places, with the person s own beliefs. In the exploration of the New World, the principle of attachment occurred largely due to the concept of otherness . This is because, the European view of native peoples as uncivilised, bestial, and savage made the use of native techniques unlikely, even when the native methods appeared effective. Instead, the steps in Pagden s principle of attachment were employed so that explorers could thrive in a new land, while continuing to embody European ideals. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Particularly when addressing an active shooter in a school setting. A major issue to consider when trying to keep all schools safe, is the simple fact that no two schools are the same. Understanding this can lead us to the conclusion that it is impossible to have one global plan or program that can be 100% effective in all schools. According to the IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police), there are twenty recommended actions that can be used to prevent violence in a school setting. 1. Use school resource officers (SROs) who may be provided by local law enforcement. SROs often provide law enforcement, law related counseling, and law related education to students, faculty, and staff. Continuity of officers in individual schools should be encouraged, so that students and SROs develop a rapport. 2. Consider seeking one or more probation officers for use on campus to help supervise and counsel students. This would be especially appropriate for high schools with a significant caseload of juveniles on probation. 3. The Skippers In The Canterbury Tales Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales in a collection of 24 stories while on a pilgrimage to visit the relics of Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. The purpose behind this pilgrimage is for the pilgrims to visit the shrine to seek forgiveness for their sins. Due to the long trip, the host made a deal with everyone to tell two stories on the way and back from Canterburyand whoever tells the best one receives a paid for meal. Each character telling their stories gives away bits of information and a visual idea of who they really are. In The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer uses detail, point of view, and descriptive language to portray the Pardoner and Summoner to be worse than the Skipper. The Skipper begins to tell his tale by bringing light to his past and the battles he has fought in using details. Chaucer wrote, When he fought, the enemy vessel sank, he sent his prisoners home. • 21. Marine Corps Hymn The Marine Corps Hymn One of the best known of the official military songs is the Marine Corps Hymn. And yet, no one knows who made it or exactly how old it is. Legend has it that it dates back to the Mexican American War (1846 1848). It wasn t officially copyrighted until 1917 when W.E. Christian published it in the book Rhymes of Rookies (Gutenberg.org). Even though we don t know its exact origin, we do know what the song stands for and what it means. The hymn praises the idealism of the Marine Corps and also looks back on historic moments Marines have dealt with and overcome. Different parts of the Hymn refer to specific historical events. The first line From the halls of Montezuma refers to when the Marines captured Chapultepec Castle in 1847 during the Mexican American War. The castle was in the heart of Mexico City, Mexico s capital. It served as a military academy and also offered protection to the rest of the city. After its capture the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed and the war was over (history.com). This was one of the bloodiest battles in Marine Corps history and the red stripe called blood stripes on the Marines dress uniform is to commemorate the bloodshed during the battle. It signifies the tenacity of the Marines who won despite being outnumbered by the Mexicans. The second line to the shores of Tripoli refers to the First Barbary War(1801 1805), which was the first war the United States had declared on foreign land and seas. Specifically, ... The smaller it is the longer the life. Shorter life is not saying much though, as the most massive stars live for billions of years. When a star reaches about middle age, it starts fusing hydrogen into helium. Once it has run out of usable hydrogen that it can convert into helium, it can then take on one of several paths. It can lead to white dwarfs, novae, supernovae, neutron stars or even black holes. II. When a star begins the phase of dying, it is deprived of the energy that is needed to prevent it from ... In a Type II supernovae, once the star s core surpasses a certain mass (The Chandrasekhar limit) the star begins to impolode. The core then heats up and becomes denser. Eventually the implosion bounces back off the core, expelling the stellar material into space. What s left is a neutron star. Type I supernovaes lack a hydrogen signature in their light spectra. These type of supernovae are generally thought to originate from white dwarf stars in a close binary system. As the gas of the copanion star accumulates onto the white dwarf, the white dwarf is progressively compressed, and eventually sets off a runaway nuclear reaction inside that eventually leads to a cataclysmi supernova outburst. ... As such we will first address Hobbes then move to Spinoza and end with a combined statement on matter. Therefore we must begin by introducing Thomas Hobbes. Thomas Hobbes solution on the mind body problem is one of a combination. Hobbes posits that rather than mind and body being two separate things they actually are both the same thing, matter. He confronts Descartes by saying that the thing that is thinking and the action of thinking are not the same things. If this is true then according to his logic we must conclude that a thinking thing is something corporeal. This period of time was the longest captivity a Native American tribe had ever been imprisoned. The Chiricahuas imprisonment began in 1886, when the United States Army transported four hundred Native Americans from San Carlos and Fort Apache reservations to army posts in Florida (Davis). By 1887, the bulk of the Chiricahuas had been transported to the Mount Vernon barracks in Alabama, and the rest of the dislocated band of Chiricahuas, including the now famous Geronimo were reunited by 1888 (Davis). General Crook relied heavily on Chiricahuas turned into scouts since no white man could ever track the elusive Geronimo in his own land. Chiricahua scouts then spread rumors of a possible arrest of Geronimo, which then convinced the proud but, weary leader to turn him into authorities. General Crook had since resigned and his replacement, General Nelson Miles, finally captured the great Geronimo (Davis). General Miles had promised the great leader that all the Chiricahua families would be imprisoned together to further reduce the risk for more conflict. Miles then took it a step further and suggested to the Secretary of War, William C. Endicott, to imprison the Chiricahua scouts that had helped to capture Geronimo, for fear that the former scouts could not be trusted. Geronimo was separated from his family and sent to live at Fort Pickens. The seventeen other families that were hiding with him at the time of his surrender were sent to live at Fort Marion, where disease and lack of nutrition were a huge fallacy for life in that area (Davis). By April 1887, a formal report of these conditions were published that convinced President Cleveland and the war department to move the Chiricahuas to the Mount Vernon Barracks. • 41. Tom Robinson Character Analysis In To Kill A Mockingbird the main conflict is the Tom Robinson case. Tom Robinson was accused of beating and raping Mayella Violet Ewell. The people of Maycomb see Tom in two different ways. There is the public view of Tom and the private view of him. The public view would include the people of Maycomb who do not know Tom at a personal level, while the private view would be his family, Calpurnia, and the other African Americans in the town of Maycomb. The public see Tom as a dangerous man. For instance in the book it states I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin on my Mayella (Lee 231)! Mayella even said that He got me round the neck, cussin me a sayin dirt I fought and hollered, but he had me round the neck. He hit me agin a agin (Lee 241). Both Mayella and Bob Ewell make the people in the court believe that Tom is some sort of killer or dangerous man who should be lynched. Even Scout thought that Tom Robinson s powerful shoulders rippled under his thin shirt (Lee 248). Tom was very built, and that did not help his case. Before Tom even gave his testimony most people in the court and jurybelieved he was guilty. Furthermore, The public view of Tom Robinson also includes that he is an abusive man that takes advantage of woman. Such as when Mayella said I got somethin to say a I ain t say no more. That nigger yonder took advantage of me (Lee 251). After she said this, Tom became known as a person who would hurt women in an appalling way. Another example is when Atticus says Miss Mayella, not to be tedious, you ve testified that the defendant hit you, grabbed you around the neck, choked you, and took advantage of you (Lee 248). Mayella states all of these facts in her testimony; making Tom look like a untrustworthy man. One part of her story states that she went in the house to get him the nickel and turned around an fore she knew it he was on her . (Lee 241) . Mayella makes the chance of Tom being innocent lower with her lies; Tom becomes a monster to the public view. On the other hand to some he is as innocent as a mockingbird. These people know the real Tom Robinson. They belive that Tom is a generous and a hardworking man. A quotation in the story that supports this is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
