Zoroastrianism s Influence On The Formation Of Christianity
Zoroastrianism was a huge influence on the formation of Christianity. There are multiple links
between the two religions while Zoroastrianism pre dates Christianity by hundreds of years. The
evidence found through archaeological discovery and from the beliefs of present day
Zoroastrianists points to one conclusion: that although Christianityand Zoroastrianism are seen as
two very different religions, their cosmologies are so intertwined that is hard to tell which came
first until looking at the physical evidence. The core beliefs are similar and how each religion
predicts what will happen at the end of time are, as well. For some Christians, it hard to look at the
evidence without it shaking their beliefs, but by taking an outsider s perspective, one can begin see
that religions are evolving throughout the millennia. Three main topics arise when comparing the
two religions: the creation story, the story of the savior, and the revelation story. The relationships
between these two religions shows that religions may not only be divinely inspired, but also
inspired from past religions. This gives people the idea that faith evolves through the ages to better
suit the current culture or state of society.
Creation is seen in Christianity as a sacred story that explains not how, but why people exist in this
universe. Depending on the sect of Christianity, it is taken literally, or it is seen as a story that
teaches the lesson of their god s great love for mankind. Christians

Teaching Note: Case 1 Robin Hood
Case Objectives
1. To provide an introduction to the conceptual framework of strategic management using a non
business situation. 2. To introduce students to the process of problem identification and potential
solution analysis that will be used in case discussions throughout the semester.
See the table below to determine where to use this case:
|Chapter Use |Key Concepts |

What is the purpose of strategy?
See Chapter 1, Exhibit 01: Strategic management consists of the analyses, decisions, and actions an
organization undertakes in order to create and sustain competitive advantages: strategy directs the
organization toward overall goals and objectives; includes multiple stakeholders in decision making;
incorporates both short term and long term perspectives; recognizes trade offs between efficiency
and effectiveness.
An interesting question that the instructor can ask at this point is: what business is Robin Hood s
organization in? Some students might say philanthropy, some might say robbery. The answers to
this question will help students understand the importance of vision and mission: the leader must
have a clear idea of the purpose of the business, and who it competes with, in order to craft strategy.
If the business is robbery, there are different competitors, like highwaymen.
2. What strategic problems does Robin Hood have?
Robin Hood s organization is in a profit squeeze: revenue is down and costs are rising. In
addition, there are cracks in the culture of the organization. Issues that need to be addressed
include: How to avoid detection of the growing organization? Has Sherwood Forest become too
small to sustain operations? What to do about the growing strength of the Sheriff s forces? How to
address organizational

A Case Study For Week Three Centers On A Liability And...
The case study selected for week three centers on a liability and assumption of risk case study. In
this case study, Brent Thomas and George Banks are facing liability charges after Ricky Watts
sustained a serious injury during hockey practice (Essex, 2016). In this situation, Thomas is the
school principal, and Banks is the hockey coach as well as the gym teacher (Essex, 2016). Ricky
obtained injuries after improperly blocking the puck (Essex, 2016). This case studywas selected
because it highlights a situation that will likely be faced by all future school leaders. Sports are
popular among students, and there is inherent riskin each sporting event. A school is open to
liability if they do not ensure that proper protocols are met. Responding to Case Study Questions
Question 1: What factors would determine whether the principal may be liable (Essex, 2016)?
In order to prove Thomas liable in this situation, there would have to be evidence of proximate
cause (Essex, 2016). The student, or student s family, would need to be able to prove that there is a
relationship between the principal s breach of duty, and the injury the student suffered (Essex,
2016). I have dedicated the remainder of this paragraph to describing the ways in which Thomas
may be in breach of his duty. Thomas has the responsibility as the school principal to ensure that
Homewood High School has highly qualified teachers. It is his responsibility to recommend to the
board the person best suited for the

Analysis Of Edith Wharton s House Of Mirth
From Gender Roles to Gender Goals
Edith Wharton s novel, House of Mirth, written in 1905 centers around Lily Bart, a single woman
in her late twenties, who is constantly struggling to maintain her status in high society. Lily
navigates herself through the upper class with a double consciousness . This double consciousness
enables her to recognize ...that [she] is at the same time inside and outside the ideology of gender;
and conscious of being so, conscious of that twofold pull, of that division, that doubled vision
(Carson 695). Throughout the text she is constantly trying to balance a life of being a financially
independent woman or the New Woman Wharton and her contemporaries added to the female
archetypes, but then having to abide in the gender roles that society had established. The limits of
her sex contribute to her inevitable failure by the end of the novel but the knowledge of them
aided her deconstructing her role as a woman. This double consciousness is an advantage since
she is able to manipulate the upper class, but the facade she tries to maintain in order to achieve
her goal financial stability contributes to her falling victim to the society she tried to configure to
her own desires. In this paper, I will argue how the double consciousness of Lily Bart deconstructed
the tradition woman to assert the New Woman .
I.
It makes her look like the real Lily the Lily I know (Wharton 166). This seems to be a never
ceasing topic of who the real Lily

Irony And Symbolism In Tell-Tale Heart By Edgar Allan Poe
In the Tell Tale Heart , Edgar Allan Poe uses irony, imagery, and symbolism to depict how
frighteningly twisted the mind of the narrator truly is. Irony in the story is that the narrator
/murderer refers to how he loves the old man and was never so kind to him as he was right
before the murder. It s irony that he loves the guy but he systematically plans to kill him. there
are many references to clocks and time to described how slowly he moved, Poe also uses similes
in this manner as well. Poe was famous for playing with symbolism to create the shock factor.
There s also the symbolism of the heart its Our narrator is such a wreck, it s hard not to feel sorry
for him. He s nervous ( very dreadfully nervous ), paranoid, and physically and mentally ill. He

Maybe this explains why he doesn t share his name, or any other identifying characteristics. He
wants us to know what he did, but not where to find him. Before we explore some of those
possibilities, we should clear up a fine point. Poe doesn t explicitly tell us if the narrator is male
or female. Poe wrote a famous story called The Imp of the Perverse. In this story, the narrator
claims that people are driven to murder, and other acts that are destructive to the self and others,
due to perverse and uncontrollable impulses. Most of his works explore this idea to some degree.
The Oxford English Dictionary Online provides two helpful definitions of perverse: a. Contrary to
what is morally right or good; wicked, evil, debased. b. Contrary to an accepted standard or practice;
incorrect, mistaken, wrong; (of an argument, interpretation, etc.) unjustifiable, contradictory,
distorted. We trust the narrator s controversy that he needs will execute that old man basically will
a chance to be free of those force of as much eye. To the purpose for contention we should expect
that it might be exceptionally troublesome with clear out the old man, and that murdering him

stroke Essay
Cerebral vascular accident or a stroke is the destruction of brain substance, resulting from
thrombosis, intracranial hemorrhage, or embolism, which causes vascular insufficiency. In
addition, it is an area of the brain denied blood and oxygen that is required and damage is done to
a part of the cells. The effect of the patient depends upon where the damageoccurs and the severity
of the stroke.
Each year alone about 150,000 people in America die from a stroke or are seriously disabled.
Stroke is among the top five causes of death. It generally happens very suddenly and it can take up
to five to seven days to completely effect the patient. Depending on how many of the brain cells die
during the stroke, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After this progress starts to slow down, professionals can estimate how much progress the patient
will be likely to make.
If doctors agree that a stroke has taken place, they may do other tests to determine where the
stroke occurred, how large of an area is damaged, and how the blood flow with in the brain has
been effected; they do this by taking a CAT scan. They may also take an ECG to determine if there
is any heart disease that may have caused the stroke. In addition, they take tests to see if the patient
has high blood pressure or they may test the arteries themselves because this is a major cause of
stroke in most people. Catheterization, injecting dye into the arteries, and blood tests are the most
common tests done. A high glucose level in the blood may reveal diabetes and high blood fats
indicate thickened red blood and arteriosclerosis. There may also be a high level of red blood cells,
changing the consistency of the blood. These conditions must be treated to prevent further strokes.
The most common causes of strokes are thrombosis. This is when a clot forms in one of the
arteries, mostly in the carotid in the neck and the vertebral artery. The blood is thick and moves
very slowly through the artery. The thrombus will form on the damaged area of the artery wall
and will cut off the flow of blood to the brain. The area of the artery that is damaged is cause by
arteriosclerosis. This form of

Communicate Wishes For End Of Life Care
I believe that communicating your wishes for end of life care is very important. Talking about
end of life care to the people close to you can make a hard process easier and go smoother. It is
also important that people document their end of life care and wishes for their medical records.
A patient with documented end of life care and wishes will have autonomy and justice even
when they are not mentally or physically able to express their wishes. Gathering the people that
you are close to so you can discuss your end of life care and wishes for most people is a difficult
discussion but, a very important one. Talking about your wishes with your close ones can help

Gun Control Restrictions
The United States has 88.8 guns per 100 people, which is the highest total in the world. The guns
was first intended for hunting and self protection. Later on, it was brought into the military for use.
For that reason, people believe that guns can only be used in the military. Others say that the
Second Amendment gives them the right to have guns and use it for protection. This was for if any
person tried to attack them, they would have protection with them at all times. Later on, guns got
used for the wrongs reasons. More crimes were being develop, like the assassination of President
John F. Kennedy. Now, people want more restrictions on gun
ownership and how it should be used.
If some restrictions were to be made, some say it will not make much of a difference. Guns use
had lead to violence in the past, but also it coud be a good protection for humans against attackers.
The argument that may still be going on today is if the United Statesshould put more restrictions on
gun ownership and use. The reasons why people are still asking for more restrictions is because
more crimes and shooting as been happening lately. There were about 126 mass shootings around
2001 to 2014. The opponents of this issue think that if more restrictions were made, that would not
change the fact that there would be as much shootings as there was. Reasons to believe this was that
even with more restrictions, shootings would still go on. Nothing would stop the criminals from
killing others. Now,

What Are The Five Major Models Of Organizations That...
Individuals are all different but they all share similar characteristics. It comes within the leader
to recognize the differences and similarities. Leaders have to analyze and comprehend the
employees so that workers perform a better outcome. Organizations need a mission to look
forward; this objective should be shared or compatible with employees so that outcomes are
better and more effective. There are five major models of organization that characterized
employees. These models are Autocratic model, Custodial model, Supportive model, collegial
model, and the System model Employers have to know when and why they should apply each
model, and if to even apply them at all. The working environment is an enormous and crucial
component that influences employees performance. Leaders have to know how and when to
motivate the individuals. They have to understand that workers have to motivate to work,
nevertheless they still have to be focused toward the organization s mission. Organizations are
very complex but simple at the same time. An organization is a group of people that are organized
to work together to achieve a common goal or goals. The organization needs a mission to look
forward to, this mission or objective will make the organization concentrate and act towards their
goal. An organization is a mix of relationships, power, objectives, roles, activities and more other

Observation of The Pub Essay
As I open the double glass doors at the Pub I am overwhelmed with all of
the noise. This place sounds more like a bar than a laundry mat. There is music playing,
beeping from the arcade games, a metal fan going, tumbling noises from the dryers, and
wet clothes being thrown around in the washers. I can barely keep my train of thought.
The humidity in the room made it very uncomfortable. The smell on the other hand is
great it smells so clean and warm. The room was filled with many different people.
There were college students, families, people that were by themselves, screaming babies
and a few senior citizens. The room is fairly large with dinghy white walls that have a

jewelry. In the clutter of twenty five cent machines stands a tall beige scale that claims
to be able to tell your fortune by your weight. Behind that mess is another round wooden
table surrounded by three more dark green lawn chairs. Sitting beside the table is a large
roaring metal fan. Hanging above the table is a surveillance camera an another t.v

Thomas Paine And The Undermining Of American Democracy
Thomas Paine and the Undermining of American Democracy There has always been a relationship
between religion and democracy. Religion provides the framework and moral boundaries for
democracy. Democracy preaches freedom but not absolute freedom, religion decides what freedom
is necessary for democracy to work. The question then becomes, what religionis the best fit for a
thriving democracy. Thomas Paine, political activist, philosopher, political theorist, believes that a
deistic religion is necessary for democracy to function effectively and to be truly called a
democracy. In this essay, I will discuss Paine s argument and evaluate it, using Elizabeth Cady
Stanton and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr s ideals.
The premise for Thomas Paine s argument is his belief that if a religion is the basis for
democracy, then that religion should be based on reason and logic. Any other religion that isn t
based on those principles would undermine American democracy. The religion that Paine is
advocating and referring to is called deism. Paine gives a depiction of deism with this passage, The
true Deist has but one Deity; and his religion consists in contemplating the power, wisdom, and
benignity of the Deity in his works, and in endeavoring to imitate him in everything moral,
scientifically, and mechanical. In Paine s eyes, a deistic religion would be able provide the moral
compass and lacks the man made parts that other religions tend to embrace as gospel. Paine

Social Class Theory And Political Sociology
Power is the The ability of individuals or groups to make there own concerns and interestes
count, even when others resist . ( Anthony Giddens 2001 ). There are three major theoretical
frameworks in political sociology pluralist, elite theory, and social class perspectives. Classic
pluralist see power held by a variety of groups in society; some of which are more powerful than
others. The diverse and competing interests of different groups is the basis for a democratic
equilibrium. These groups compete with each other to maximise their influence. No one group
or class is able to dominate all other groups because of checks and balances built into a
democratic system. Elite theory involves the idea that rather than there being a simple plurality
of competing groups in society, there are instead a series of competing elites and powerful
groups who are able to impose their will and dominate the rest of society. social class theory is
based off the ideas of Karl Marx. These frameworks have set the foundation for most perspectives
in political sociology.
There are two main sociological perspectives. The Functionalist Perspective, Symbolic
Interactionism Perspective and the Conflict Perspective. Functionalism presents society as a
machine of interconnected parts that work together in unison to maintain a state of economic
balance and social equilibrium for the whole. for example the family, schools, government and
religion are social institutions that contribute to

Parents and grandparents may teach traditions and pass down history because it is what is
important to them. In the short story Everyday Use by Alice Walker, one of the conflicts revolve
around quilts that have been in their family for a while. They had been pieced by Grandma Dee
and the Big Dee and me had hang them on the quilt frames on the porch and quilted them
(Walker 25 26). The quilts are a piece of their past and heritage. In both of them were scraps of
dresses Grandma Dee had worn fifty and more years ago. Bits and pieces of Grandpa Jarrell s
Paisley shirts. And one teeny faded blue piece that was from Great Grandpa Ezra s uniform that
he wore in the Civil War (Walker 26). The quilts make them who they are today by reminding the
family of their roots. In another short story, Two Kinds by Amy Tan, the narrator s mother moved

The History of the Golden Gate Bridge Essay
Stretching across the San Francisco Bay stands the world famous Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge
is located in one of nature s most beautiful settings, spanning the mile wide bay from Fort Point in
San Francisco to the Marin County Shore. Joseph Strauss, specializing in bridge building, was the
leader of the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. The start of construction began on January 5,
1993 and, after four years, was completed on April 27, 1997. The bridge was needed to be built
because of the growing population after the California Gold Rush. The bridge was a difficult task
for engineers and is now an inspiration. The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the largest suspension
bridges and is well known around the world. The Golden Gate... Show more content on

He was most certainly familiar with the job.
In 1919, a study was begun to see if it would be possible to build a bridge across the Golden Gate.
Michael O Shaughnessy was the San Francisco city engineer. He was in charge of the rebuilding
of the city after the devastating 1906 earthquake that destroyed much of the city. O Shaughnessy
knew the need for the city to have bridges. Most said it could not be done and others said it could
be done but it would cost about $100 million to build it (Barter 23). O Shaughnessy and Strauss,
both wanting the same thing, got together. After the two consulted, they figured the only way to
bridge the channel was to use a suspension bridge.
Once O Shaughnessy and Strauss believed they could build the bridge, politics came into the
picture. In 1923, the California state legislature passes a bill that allowed the establishment of a
Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District. The district s job was to oversee the project and run
the bridge once it was built. Over the next few years, many people spoke up both for and against
the building of the bridge. The land on both ends of the bridge was owned by the U.S. military.
Before any plans could move forward, the military would have to approve the project and give the
Bridge District permission to use War Department land. An army colonel was appointed to hold
hearings on the matter and for seven months, he listened to both

Christian Compounding Defects
It is common knowledge in the building industry that the most important part of a new building
structure, is the foundation. Inasmuch as, any mistakes in it, only gets worst as you begin to build
up. Consequently, there s a term in the industry known as, Compounding Defects, which simply
means that the mistakes will grow when building upward. Similarly, Jesus, being the Good
Shepherd that He is, warned of three things that could cause serious defects. Furthermore, these
defects mentioned in Matthew 7, have the potential to affect the lives of Christians. Additionally, if
Christians, try to build with these defective materials in their lives, it will be quite difficult to stand
when the storms of life hit. Matthew 7:1 says: Judge

What Is Eveline Dehumanization
At the end of James Joyce s Eveline, the title character s eye opening epiphany and subsequent
anxiety attack illustrate the dehumanization experienced by women in patriarchal societies. Near
the end of the story, Eveline makes a choice to leave her toxic family situation where she feels
herself in danger of her father s violence (Joyce 28) and decides to sail away with her lover, Frank.
However, as she stands with Frank on the dock, she feels him seize her hand, (Joyce 31) and he
commands her like a dog: Come! (Joyce 31). Eveline suddenly realizes that Frank s changing
behavior could indicate that he is equally as abusive as her father, and she fears that [Frank] would
drown her. After he calls her again, she cries out, No! No!

Analysis Of The Movie Stranger By Harold Crick
Harold Crick is an IRS auditor who lives an extremely predictable lifestyle dictated by routine
and numbers. In the beginning of the film Stranger than Fiction Harold is depicted as boring,
routine, and shows signs of having Obsessive Compulsive Disorder with his endless counting of
everything he sees. He lives his life to the minimum as he has no wife, social life, no real friends,
and in fact, his wristwatch seems to be his only friend as he depends on timing everything down
to the second, to save time. Harold continues to live every day just like the last, simply slaving
through the rest of the workweek, until he hears a mysterious voice, an omniscient voice,
narrating his every move day in and out. Karen Eiffel Kay is an esteemed novelist known for
writing amazing tragedies. She has been working on her latest work but is suffering from writer s
block, and can t figure out how exactly she wants to kill her main character, Harold Crick. During
her narrations she announces Harold s sudden imminent death, and he hears this with an
overwhelming fear of what this means for him. The sudden imminent death creates an issue of time
sensitivity for Harold, and is a huge part of Stranger than Fictions theme. Harold was completely
content with his mundane life full of routine based tasks all programmed by his wristwatch. The
issue of when he will die is a huge motivator for both Harold and Karen as she needs to find that
perfect ending for her book. The plots are difficult

The Impact Of Internet On The World Wide Web
Since its introduction, the World Wide Web has been an electronic hub for people to share thoughts
anonymously with others all over the globe, however the internet has been used for activities
deemed illicit. Governments have responded by limiting the access people have to certain parts of
the web and monitoring people s internetactivities. There are people who believe that these
governments actions have violated civil rights. In order to protect their anonymity, people have
turned to The Onion Router (TOR). TOR is a free web browser which protects people s anonymity
and allows them to avoid censorship of the World Wide Web
. Users of TOR can browse the web
without their identities or locations being monitored by anyone. TOR does this by sending user
traffic through a complex network consisting of thousands of relays that conceal a user s identity.
The term onion refers to the onion like application layers of encryption. TOR encrypts the user s
information multiple times and is then sent to its destination without compromising security during
the transmission of user data. This data is randomly bounced through a network of relays run by
volunteers around the globe. NSA characterized TOR as the kind of high secure, low latency
internet anonymity with no contenders for the throne in waiting (Harris, Hudson). Attacks against
TOR are an active area of academic research and are welcomed by TOR. Onion routing was
developed in the mid 1990s at the US Naval Research

in your group? Specifics?
My group consisted of me my, my friend, and my roommate. We were able to balance
personalities fairly well. This may be due to the fact of having arguments about various topics
before. My roommate would be a communicator facilitator. He has been homeless in his lifetime
this caused him to be sympathetic to students with personality and social issues. My friend would
be a collaborative inventor. He understood the big picture of choosing the students with the

bringing them before the group. Each group was giving all the time they needed to prepare there

of all other group members. We actively listened to each other point of view. After each group

After discussing the topics were able to come to a consensus to allow students 1, 3, and 6 into the

be allowed into the school. This would be based on the student s track record and whether they
possess positive mental and social state of mind. We agreed that well rounded students who were
already self determined stood a good chance of maximizing their potential in the school. My

Minister s Black Veil Essay
Hawthorne and Washington tie characterization in all three stories by the use of thoughts,
dialogue, actions, and characters. It is presented through direct and indirect characterization. In
the short story The Minister s Black Veil , Hawthorne gives thorough descriptions of Reverend
Mr. Hooper and the townspeople. The minister uses a black veil as a response for social
commentary of the townspeople s sins. These actions cause commotion amongst the people and
rumors fly around fast, especially after the death of a young maiden. This makes the people
uneasy and they avoid the minister and do not approach him, nor dare to ask why he is wearing
the veil. Dying sinners cried aloud for Mr. Hooper, and would not yield their breath till... Show

She had dark and abundant hair, so glossy that it threw off sunshine with a gleam. Her face was
beautiful from regularity of feature and richness of complexion he writes, in contrast to the
townspeople, which he describes as dark, and gloomy . It is evident that the scarlet letter on
Hester s chest determines how she is treated during those years and here, he creates a sympathy
with the readers for Hester, and Pearl, and their lives onward. Though Hester still remains in the
town, even when given the opportunity to leave if wanted, she remains strong for Pearl and
their overall welfare. The townspeople still avoid her and don t talk to her due to the letter on
her chest. Hawthorne shows the reader how cruel the Puritan way of life is and how their
punishment takes away Hester and Pearl s joy in life. But the first object of which Pearl seemed
to become aware was the scarlet letter on Hester s bosom! One day, as her mother stooped over
the cradle, the infant s eyes had been caught by the glimmering of the gold embroidery about the
letter, and putting up her little hand, she grasped at it, smiling not doubtfully, but with a decided
gleam. Pearl is a constant reminder for Hester of her sin and she ll never be able to escape the

Kingdom of God
What exactly is the kingdom of God? How does one recognize the kingdom? Are you in the
kingdom of God? So often, people search for the evidence of the kingdom of God rather than
simply identifying it. In the present day, the stress is evasively put on works and actions rather
than a personal relationship with God. Too many people fall into the trap of participating in as
many activities as they can, living to have their good deeds noticed by others; however, the key
point is entirely missed. It is the innermost intimate part of a person that divulges the power of an
individual s life, not the actions. Jesusmakes this clear in the book of Luke when he states, The
kingdom of Godis not coming with things that can be observed; nor will... Show more content on

This passage contrasts the present and the future magnificence of the kingdom, which is constantly
growing.
The kingdom of God includes everyone: the poor, the gentiles, the outcast, the oppressed, the
women, Samaritans, tax collectors, the sick, and the sinners. Jesus states that the blind receive
their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor
have good news brought to them (Lk. 7:22). If you take this out of the context of which it was
written and it may not seem like a very big deal that some of these groups of people would be
included in the kingdom of God, but in reality, Jesus caused a lot of controversy through
focusing on these neglected and oppressed people. The possession of illnesses and sin created a
greater sense of desperation within the people, this allowed more room for grace to abound in
their lives and explains the reason why miracles took place in their lives more often than the rich
and prestigious upper class. A significant aspect of Jesus teaching was setting people free from sin
and giving them dominion over evil (Drane 149). Jesus constantly breaks down social barriers and
places heavy emphasis on going against the social boundaries that separate the people.
Jesus completely redefines the role of Jewish women, which Luke draws special attention to this
throughout his book. In the Bible, women were of little to no value. They were

Common Mistakes in Writing
Common Mistakes in Writing: Comma Splice
In your writing, there are 3 major problems that we commonly have to address as teachers
/instructors/professors/etc. I want you to take the time to read about these. While we don t expect
this to fix your issues instantly, we are hoping that you ll aim to make less of these mistakes in the
future (especially on your papers, where these errors WILL be counted off for).
Comma Splice Commas are tricky because there are so many different ways you can use them, but
one of the most common ways to use commas is to separate two main clauses that are connected by
a coordinating conjunction. That just means that when you join two things that could be sentences
on their own with a word such as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You ll notice that with run on sentences and comma splices, the two are very similar issues and
solved in the same manner. It s a good rule of thumb to remember them together. If you need any
help, contact Dr. Wilson or myself.
Common Mistakes in Writing: Sentence Fragments
The last major error that we encounter in writing is the sentence fragment. These are a bit trickier
to solve than the other two issues, but you should have no problem as long as you take your time
with them.
Sentence Fragment A part of a sentence that is punctuated as a complete sentence. It may lack a
subject, a predicate, or both, or it may be a dependent clause. It can be fixed in one of three ways:
He quit his job. And cleared out his desk. (the second sentence is wrong)
This deals with a missing subject or predicate. These are usually the result of faulty punctuation of a
compound predicate. Either add the subject, or change the punctuation to incorporate the fragment
into the preceding sentence:
He quite his job. And he cleared out his desk.
Or:
He quit his job and cleared out his desk.
A missing or incomplete predicate is often the result of using a verbal instead of a finite verb.
Usually, the best remedy is addition of a helping verb:
Sheila waiting to see you.
Becomes:
Sheila is waiting to see you.
Although a dependent clause has a subject and a predicate, it cannot stand alone as a sentence
because it begins with a relative

Song Of Solomon Discrimination Quotes
normalization, by the society they live in, of the way these women are treated goes hand in hand
with the way men seem to discard them so easily, because in Song of Solomon the women are the
ones who get left behind. Morrison tries to break the stereotypical characterization of the women s
dependency on men, for instance by creating characters like Pilate who are more than capable to
break free.
In the novel it is noticeable that some of the women are those who seem to be unable to fly and
suffer the most at the hand of the characters who are able. They are trapped in their marriages,
crushed by heavy burdens and try to survive day by day. (Morrison, 1977) Some women seem to
be grounded and trapped on earth. They are obsessive and rely on the safe and familiar places
they have known their whole lives , for instance Ruth Foster Dead, she is milkman s mother and
the daughter of the first negro doctor in town. (Morrison, 1977) Ruth has been mentally abused by
her husband and lives a loveless existence, against one s better judgment, Ruth stays married to

The Shakespeare Conspiracy Theory
William Shakespeare, by far one of the greatest playwrights of all time, is clouded with
controversy. Rumors run rampant that he was nothing more than a non de plume for someone who
wished to keep the anonymity of his identity. There have been names such as Edward De Vere the
17th Earl of Oxford, Sir Francis Bacon, even Queen Elizabeth herself was among those thought to
be the true writer of the plays and poems.
To start from the beginning of the controversy, the earliest actual documentation of such findings
began in 1785 by an oxford scholar named James Wilmot. It was here that when James came up
empty handed of any evidence of Shakespeare s plays did he come to the conclusion that it had to
have been someone else and that someone was Sir Francis Bacon. James however never reported
anything and on his deathbed actually destroyed his writings, but not before telling a fellow
scholar, James Corton Cowell, his findings. Cowell would leave and make a presentation to the
Ipswich Philosophic Society, and so began the greatest mystery of whether William Shakespeare
was a famous playwright or a fraud taking credit for the work of someone else.
The search for evidence to either prove or disprove this conspiracy has been one of the hardest
searches I have ever had to do. I searched countless sites and countless books to find at least one
negative or positive piece of evidence other than just speculation and one side arguing against
another on the true author.

Example Of Semiotic Connotation
The following semiotic deconstruction analysis will advance through three stages, that being
description, interpretation and evaluation. However prior to this it is important to discuss the fact
that we are now living in an era of an attention economy. In today s age, consumers are
overwhelmed by the paradox of choice so many choices to make, and no easy way to distinguish
among the offerings (Davenport, Harris 2009). Furthermore, since consumers are bombarded with
advert offering its important to avail of whatever attention a brandgets. Thus an attention economy
is an approach of management that treat human attention as scare resources and applies an
economic theory to make use of that attention; hence the ability of the brand to channel... Show

In such respect, a semiotic interpretation would first consist of a description of an image as noted
by Schroeder (2002). In principle, the description of the image would involve studying the aspects
of the ad such as the layout, brand blocks used, imagery, tag line, language and among other traits
can be discussed. Volkswagenwas established in Wolfsburg in 1937, it is a German car
manufacturer, which has uniquely adopted a wide spectrum of target audiences. This spectrum
goes from college students to professionals as well as to customers in the commercial area.
Captivatingly, during the 1960 1970 s much of Volkswagen s advertisingwas known to be very
thought provoking while illustrating the utilitarian aspects of their vehicles, however not going
beyond the emotional meaning associated with owning a Volkswagen vehicle at that time. As you

What Is The Identity Of American Identity
Developed through early Americans events such as the establishment of the Plymouth colony and
how hypocritical the puritans can be, the settlers and colonists can be characterized as hardworking,
diligent, unfaithful, and unfair. As depicted in William Bradford s historical description Of
Plymouth Plantation, the Pilgrims demonstrated a hardworking and loyal spirit as they struggled to
survive their first year, they had a hard time providing a roof over their heads, finding resources,
surviving diseases, and the unforgiving weather. Puritans show their true colors, hypocritical and
shameful through their acts throughout the story of Nathaniel Hawthornes Scarlet Letter.
Conclusively, these characteristics are reflected in American identity in both a positive and negative
way, the Pilgrims taught us what it meant to work for a dollar, we carried on the fakeness from the
Puritans. Based on the events taken place in the early years of American history, the early settlers
and colonists developed American identity through the hard work, diligence, and loyalty they
exhibited to survive; we carry those habits in our genes today. This example articulates that the
early americans worked their butts of to get what they wanted for the future of the colony. They
started out as fifty then it narrowed down to seven, these seven were determined to accomplish their
goal. This supports that the argument that Americans are hardworking people, no matter the
situation. The author uses

Birth Control Pills In Schools Essay
Three in ten teen American girls will get pregnant at least once before age twenty which adds up
to nearly 750,000 teen pregnancies every year ( 11 Facts about Teen Pregnancy ). This is one of
the major causes to why teenage girls drop out of school and simply throw out their lives out the
window. Once girls get pregnant, this creates an obstacle to continue thriving in life, in this case,
in school. Without a doubt it is one of the things that teenage girls face in today s world, but what
if there is a way to prevent from girls getting pregnant? The answer to this is the availability of birth
controlpills to teenage girls. There is no way of knowing what teenagers are up to and that
includes having sexual relations at a young age, but people would feel safe knowing that there is
protection for them. Therefore, birth control pills should be available for teenage girls because it
prevents pregnancy, helps lower the risk of getting ovarian cancer, and reduces the rates of abortion.

Analysis Of The Financial Ratios Of David Jones
The following financial report provides an analysis of the financial ratios of David Jones with its
close competitor in the retail sector, Myer. The financial ratios analyzed include profitability ratios,
leverage ratios, efficiency ratios and market ratios for the two companies. The analysis utilizes
individual company time series analysis as well as industry cross sectional analysis with the aim of
determining the competitiveness of David Jones relative to its close competitor Myer.
Introduction
Financial ratio analysis is a valuable tool that allows one to assess the success, potential failure or
future prospects of the company (Bazley 2012). The ratios are helpful in spotting useful trends that

Profitability ratios are used to measure the overall efficiency of thebusiness, as well as management
effectiveness. Examples of profitability ratios include the gross margin ratio and the net margin
ratios.
Gross profit margin
The gross profit margin measures the amount of profits that a company generates from its
operations without consideration of its indirect costs. Thehigher thegross profit margin, the greater
the efficiency of a company s operations (Besley Brigham 2007). It means that the company is
generating enough income to cover its operating expenses. On the contrary, a lower gross profit
margin indicates that the business is not generating adequate income to cover its operating expenses.
The formulae for calculating gross profit margin is David Jones gross profit margin for the past
three years has remained stable with minimal fluctuations. The following calculated figures are for
the year 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013; 39.73%, 39.10%, 37.50% and 37.8% respectively. Such an
observation is desirable as it is indicative that the company is financially stable as it is generating
enough income to cover its operating expenses and make savings. It suggests that the industry in
which the company operates has not experienced drastic economic fluctuations that can affect the
company s cost of goods sold. However,

The Importance of Illustration and Color in Margaret Wise Brown s Children s Books
Margaret Wise Brown s The Runaway Bunny is probably one of the most popular children s
books of the last two generations. Readers love the gentle magic of the words, and loving pictures.
The illustrations of Brown s children s books fulfill the concerns and emotions of the child reader.
Clement Hurd was the illustrator of The Runaway Bunny, Goodnight Moon, and many of his own
books. The Dream Book is another children s book written by Brown and illustrated by Richard
Floethe. Floethe has a very different style of illustration than Hurd. Floethe has illustrated many of
Brown s books and has won many awards. Although done by different illustrators they ... Show

There are also a lot of cool colors in this book such as blue and green which help to create more of
a dream like vision.
Clement Hurd s style of illustrations looks like they were painted and also have very warm colors
such as yellow and orange. The bright colors and activity of the pictures look like images that you
may see in a Saturday morning cartoon. There is an illustration in this book which has the mother
carrying a basket and a gardening tool. She is wearing bright blue overalls with a bright red hat.
The flowers are bright yellow, red, pink, and white. These bright colors are present throughout the
book. This story is about an adventure that the little bunny takes showing pictures of him on a
stormy sea and in a circus show.
By looking at the pictures in each of these books it is easy to see that the authors adapt the colors
to help convey the storyline. In The Runaway Bunny the colors are very lively and rich in their
tones. These types of colors help with the adventurous and exciting storyline. There are not
many dark colors in this story which I also think is saying that this is not supposed to be a scary
adventure story. In The Dream Book, the colors are very dark and bold. There are many dark
night skies and I think that this helps to convey a story of dreams and bedtime. Children hear this
story and feel relaxed and ready to close their eyes after a long day of fun.

Annex The Philippines
Many people said that it was unnecessary for the United states to annex the Philippines but others
thought that it was the right thing to do.After the war the United states had to make a choice
whether to annex the philippines or not. They chose to annex the philippines here are some of the
reasons why the chose to annex the philippines. The United Statesannexed the philippines because
they didn t not want the Philippines to be taken over by somebody else. The article states Shall we
abandon them with Germany, England, and Japan hungering for them? This means that the United
states should have taken them before someone else took them or before the Spanish took them
back. The article also states That would be cowardly and dishonorable. This means that the United
states just fought a war to get the philippines and it would be cowardly to just give them back to
who ever was wanting to take them. Another reason that the United states annexed the Philippines
is because at the time the United states was trying to become and empire. By annexing the
Philippines they were able to gain more territory and further themselves into becoming an empire.

Character Analysis Of Mrs. Dalloway, By Virginia Woolf
Written by Virginia Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway is a fictional novel that concentrates on the daily
encounters of Clarissa Dalloway and her flashbacks. Woolf s stream of consciousness technique and
third person narration gives the reader an insight into the doings and feelings of the various
characters in the novel. Woolf s commentary focuses on the oppression that resulted from World
War I. This is seen primarily in Septimus Warren Smith, who suffers from shell shock and serves
as a double of Clarissa. On a Wednesday in June, Clarissa, who is currently 52 years old,
introduces the readers to a plethora of streets in Westminster and also the up scale guests who
will be attending her party that evening. Clarissa is known for her lavish parties, thrown for the
purpose of allowing important people to chat, while maintaining her upper class image that was
gained through her marriage with Mr. Dalloway. The plot of the novel is simple, yet readers
know intricate details about the characters through their thoughts. In Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia
Woolf uses Clarissa s isolation, her realization of life and death, and the relationships between
the characters in a single day during the post World War I era to express the feelings and
thoughts of Clarissa, who hears the striking of Big Ben and reflects upon her past. Mrs.
Dalloway, although married to Richard Dalloway and living in an apartment with Sally Seton,
displays signs of isolation and loneliness. Her parties are a way for her to

The facts speak for themselves: Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples continue to

How Did Isaac Asimov Sabotages His Own Safeguards
Isaac Asimov was an author best known for his popular science fiction novels and short stories.
Isaac Asimov s short stories and novels were particularly focused on hard fiction. This means
that his science fiction stories were categorised as realistic and give credibility to the current
science. In process of writing these stories he devised The Three Laws of Robotics . The three laws
are stated as follows: a robotmay not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human
being to come to harm; a robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such
orders would conflict with the First law and; a robot must protect its own existence as long as such
protection does not conflict with the First or Second law.
In his short stories from The Complete Robot, Asimov intentionally reveals loopholes, ambiguities

By taking pilgrims hostage, King Philip and his colleagues made a deal that they could exchange
their prisoners for payoff as cash, weapon, or procurements. The assault on Lancaster in 1675 was
one of the most punctual strikes. However, it did not come completely abruptly. Before the assault,
gossipy tidbits had coursed that the Wampanoag tribes were arranging vicious strikes on the
boondocks settlements of what is presently in western Massachusetts. A few pilgrims including the
Reverend Joseph Rowlandson were considered these bits of gossip and noticed important and
ventured out to Boston to approach the administration there for military guide. The assault was

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Leverage...
Banks typically need equity and need to make debts to fund loans and other operations. A bank s
indebtedness is primarily composed by deposits, borrowings owed to other banks, and bonds
released by the bank itself in the capital market. On the other hand a bank s equity is determined by
subtracting the amount of a banks liabilities from the amount of its assets; for a bank, equity
largely coincides with capital. Regulation of bank capital is necessary in modern economy because
without it a bank could potentially hold very modest capital and in case of losses become insolvent
and unable to repay its creditors, including savers and deposit holders. Capital serves as a cushion
that should allow banks to withstand even substantial losses without... Show more content on

The rule merely imposes a minimum proportion of assets (or a maximum proportion of debt) to
equity, but those assets are not supposed to meet any specific requirements, especially in regard
to their riskiness, so a bank s capital, in a system which uses the leverage ratio alone, could
potentially consist solely of very high risk assets. This can lead to a shift of the entire banking
system towards riskier and riskier operations, due to the fact that, because the gearing ratio
imposes an higher level of capital than that, that will be hold without regulation, and this is
undesirable from the perspective of a bank, since it reduces its total amount of resources that can
be invested for profit, a bank would be naturally induced to invest its remaining resources in high
risk assets which usually promise an higher return of profit compared to low risk assets. Such
results would be obviously counterproductive, considering that the intention of assuring a shelter
from insolvency would be completely defeated in the case that the high risk assets would prove to
be worth less than expected. In extreme scenarios the situation could be worse than the absence of
regulation, if the existence of rules imposing leverage ratios were to induce a general sense among
the public of soundness of the banking system, that may prove to be misplaced in the case that the
solvency of the banks is

The Bill Becomes A Law Essay
The process in which a bill becomes a law can be a lengthy one; it must go through many steps in
order to become the law of the land. It is believed that this process should be a matter that every
American citizen should be informed of in order to fully understand and appreciate the inner
workings of congress with regard to The House of Representatives and the Senate. The steps in
which a bill becomes a law is an example of the democratic way of life here in The United States.
The fact that a proposal cannot become a law without consideration and approval by both houses
of congress is an outstanding virtue of our bicameral legislative system. (Maes 1 2) Anyone can
create a bill not just a member of congress. Any citizen, group or organization can draw up a bill
just from an idea. The right to petition is guaranteed by the first amendment. These bills are usually
written in the form of a letter. It is estimated that more then 15,000 bills are introduced to The
House of Representatives and the Senate each year. Each one is then assigned to a committeeafter it
is given a number. Twenty two of these committees belong to The House of Representatives and
fifteen to the Senate. There are four types of committees, they are; the Standing Committee, The
Select Committee, The Conference Committee and The Joint Committee. The Standing Committee
deals with issues regarding permanent legislation. The Select Committee deals with temporary

The True Meaning Of The Gospel Of God
Around the world and throughout all the different versions of Christianity, there are so many
things that people call the gospel . Some say it is the only way to get to Heaven, or that it is a
doctrine of damnation that God sent us to right our wrongs. Ravi Zacharias stated in a video
sermon what he thinks that the gospel has become when he says, It became I think cheapened
and somehow diluted if not polluted and so an average person who view what is the gospel they
say it is the same old thing, you re a sinner and you re heading to hell... (Zacharias). Most
individuals in today s time do not know what Gods true love is or what the real meaning of the
gospel is truly because of the situations they have been in during their lives and what society has
made it out to be. According to Webster s Dictionary the definition of the word gospel is, The
message concerning Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation, (Webstersdictionary.com).
Though this is a technical definition, the Gospel of God is so much more than just teachings.
The Gospel can help those who have never met God, since it is the good news that should be
preached to everyone, it is how believers go and make more disciples throughout the world, and
through it is a way for everyone to connect with God on a personal and spiritual level.
The Gospel is the Good News
The gospel is considered good news because it shows the truth in how triumphant our God and His
Son have been in conquering death. Jesus was sent down

  • 2. Zoroastrianism s Influence On The Formation Of Christianity Zoroastrianism was a huge influence on the formation of Christianity. There are multiple links between the two religions while Zoroastrianism pre dates Christianity by hundreds of years. The evidence found through archaeological discovery and from the beliefs of present day Zoroastrianists points to one conclusion: that although Christianityand Zoroastrianism are seen as two very different religions, their cosmologies are so intertwined that is hard to tell which came first until looking at the physical evidence. The core beliefs are similar and how each religion predicts what will happen at the end of time are, as well. For some Christians, it hard to look at the evidence without it shaking their beliefs, but by taking an outsider s perspective, one can begin see that religions are evolving throughout the millennia. Three main topics arise when comparing the two religions: the creation story, the story of the savior, and the revelation story. The relationships between these two religions shows that religions may not only be divinely inspired, but also inspired from past religions. This gives people the idea that faith evolves through the ages to better suit the current culture or state of society. Creation is seen in Christianity as a sacred story that explains not how, but why people exist in this universe. Depending on the sect of Christianity, it is taken literally, or it is seen as a story that teaches the lesson of their god s great love for mankind. Christians ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To introduce students to the process of problem identification and potential solution analysis that will be used in case discussions throughout the semester. See the table below to determine where to use this case: |Chapter Use |Key Concepts | |1: Strategy Concept |Leadership for strategic management; sustainable competitive advantage; vision, mission, strategic objectives;| | |external environment; internal environment; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What is the purpose of strategy? See Chapter 1, Exhibit 01: Strategic management consists of the analyses, decisions, and actions an organization undertakes in order to create and sustain competitive advantages: strategy directs the organization toward overall goals and objectives; includes multiple stakeholders in decision making; incorporates both short term and long term perspectives; recognizes trade offs between efficiency and effectiveness. An interesting question that the instructor can ask at this point is: what business is Robin Hood s organization in? Some students might say philanthropy, some might say robbery. The answers to this question will help students understand the importance of vision and mission: the leader must have a clear idea of the purpose of the business, and who it competes with, in order to craft strategy. If the business is robbery, there are different competitors, like highwaymen. 2. What strategic problems does Robin Hood have? Robin Hood s organization is in a profit squeeze: revenue is down and costs are rising. In addition, there are cracks in the culture of the organization. Issues that need to be addressed include: How to avoid detection of the growing organization? Has Sherwood Forest become too small to sustain operations? What to do about the growing strength of the Sheriff s forces? How to address organizational ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. A Case Study For Week Three Centers On A Liability And... The case study selected for week three centers on a liability and assumption of risk case study. In this case study, Brent Thomas and George Banks are facing liability charges after Ricky Watts sustained a serious injury during hockey practice (Essex, 2016). In this situation, Thomas is the school principal, and Banks is the hockey coach as well as the gym teacher (Essex, 2016). Ricky obtained injuries after improperly blocking the puck (Essex, 2016). This case studywas selected because it highlights a situation that will likely be faced by all future school leaders. Sports are popular among students, and there is inherent riskin each sporting event. A school is open to liability if they do not ensure that proper protocols are met. Responding to Case Study Questions Question 1: What factors would determine whether the principal may be liable (Essex, 2016)? In order to prove Thomas liable in this situation, there would have to be evidence of proximate cause (Essex, 2016). The student, or student s family, would need to be able to prove that there is a relationship between the principal s breach of duty, and the injury the student suffered (Essex, 2016). I have dedicated the remainder of this paragraph to describing the ways in which Thomas may be in breach of his duty. Thomas has the responsibility as the school principal to ensure that Homewood High School has highly qualified teachers. It is his responsibility to recommend to the board the person best suited for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Analysis Of Edith Wharton s House Of Mirth From Gender Roles to Gender Goals Edith Wharton s novel, House of Mirth, written in 1905 centers around Lily Bart, a single woman in her late twenties, who is constantly struggling to maintain her status in high society. Lily navigates herself through the upper class with a double consciousness . This double consciousness enables her to recognize ...that [she] is at the same time inside and outside the ideology of gender; and conscious of being so, conscious of that twofold pull, of that division, that doubled vision (Carson 695). Throughout the text she is constantly trying to balance a life of being a financially independent woman or the New Woman Wharton and her contemporaries added to the female archetypes, but then having to abide in the gender roles that society had established. The limits of her sex contribute to her inevitable failure by the end of the novel but the knowledge of them aided her deconstructing her role as a woman. This double consciousness is an advantage since she is able to manipulate the upper class, but the facade she tries to maintain in order to achieve her goal financial stability contributes to her falling victim to the society she tried to configure to her own desires. In this paper, I will argue how the double consciousness of Lily Bart deconstructed the tradition woman to assert the New Woman . I. It makes her look like the real Lily the Lily I know (Wharton 166). This seems to be a never ceasing topic of who the real Lily ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Irony And Symbolism In Tell-Tale Heart By Edgar Allan Poe In the Tell Tale Heart , Edgar Allan Poe uses irony, imagery, and symbolism to depict how frighteningly twisted the mind of the narrator truly is. Irony in the story is that the narrator /murderer refers to how he loves the old man and was never so kind to him as he was right before the murder. It s irony that he loves the guy but he systematically plans to kill him. there are many references to clocks and time to described how slowly he moved, Poe also uses similes in this manner as well. Before we explore some of those possibilities, we should clear up a fine point. Poe doesn t explicitly tell us if the narrator is male or female. Poe wrote a famous story called The Imp of the Perverse. In this story, the narrator claims that people are driven to murder, and other acts that are destructive to the self and others, due to perverse and uncontrollable impulses. Most of his works explore this idea to some degree. The Oxford English Dictionary Online provides two helpful definitions of perverse: a. Contrary to what is morally right or good; wicked, evil, debased. b. Contrary to an accepted standard or practice; incorrect, mistaken, wrong; (of an argument, interpretation, etc.) unjustifiable, contradictory, distorted. The effect of the patient depends upon where the damageoccurs and the severity of the stroke. Each year alone about 150,000 people in America die from a stroke or are seriously disabled. After this progress starts to slow down, professionals can estimate how much progress the patient will be likely to make. If doctors agree that a stroke has taken place, they may do other tests to determine where the stroke occurred, how large of an area is damaged, and how the blood flow with in the brain has been effected; they do this by taking a CAT scan. They may also take an ECG to determine if there is any heart disease that may have caused the stroke. In addition, they take tests to see if the patient has high blood pressure or they may test the arteries themselves because this is a major cause of stroke in most people. Catheterization, injecting dye into the arteries, and blood tests are the most common tests done. A high glucose level in the blood may reveal diabetes and high blood fats indicate thickened red blood and arteriosclerosis. There may also be a high level of red blood cells, changing the consistency of the blood. These conditions must be treated to prevent further strokes. The most common causes of strokes are thrombosis. This is when a clot forms in one of the arteries, mostly in the carotid in the neck and the vertebral artery. The blood is thick and moves very slowly through the artery. The thrombus will form on the damaged area of the artery wall and will cut off the flow of blood to the brain. The area of the artery that is damaged is cause by arteriosclerosis. This form of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Later on, guns got used for the wrongs reasons. More crimes were being develop, like the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Now, people want more restrictions on gun ownership and how it should be used. If some restrictions were to be made, some say it will not make much of a difference. Guns use had lead to violence in the past, but also it coud be a good protection for humans against attackers. The argument that may still be going on today is if the United Statesshould put more restrictions on gun ownership and use. The reasons why people are still asking for more restrictions is because more crimes and shooting as been happening lately. There were about 126 mass shootings around 2001 to 2014. The opponents of this issue think that if more restrictions were made, that would not change the fact that there would be as much shootings as there was. • 17. Thomas Paine And The Undermining Of American Democracy Thomas Paine and the Undermining of American Democracy There has always been a relationship between religion and democracy. Religion provides the framework and moral boundaries for democracy. Democracy preaches freedom but not absolute freedom, religion decides what freedom is necessary for democracy to work. The question then becomes, what religionis the best fit for a thriving democracy. Thomas Paine, political activist, philosopher, political theorist, believes that a deistic religion is necessary for democracy to function effectively and to be truly called a democracy. In this essay, I will discuss Paine s argument and evaluate it, using Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr s ideals. The premise for Thomas Paine s argument is his belief that if a religion is the basis for democracy, then that religion should be based on reason and logic. Any other religion that isn t based on those principles would undermine American democracy. The religion that Paine is advocating and referring to is called deism. Paine gives a depiction of deism with this passage, The true Deist has but one Deity; and his religion consists in contemplating the power, wisdom, and benignity of the Deity in his works, and in endeavoring to imitate him in everything moral, scientifically, and mechanical. In Paine s eyes, a deistic religion would be able provide the moral compass and lacks the man made parts that other religions tend to embrace as gospel. Paine dismisses other ... ( Anthony Giddens 2001 ). There are three major theoretical frameworks in political sociology pluralist, elite theory, and social class perspectives. Classic pluralist see power held by a variety of groups in society; some of which are more powerful than others. The diverse and competing interests of different groups is the basis for a democratic equilibrium. These groups compete with each other to maximise their influence. No one group or class is able to dominate all other groups because of checks and balances built into a democratic system. Elite theory involves the idea that rather than there being a simple plurality of competing groups in society, there are instead a series of competing elites and powerful groups who are able to impose their will and dominate the rest of society. social class theory is based off the ideas of Karl Marx. These frameworks have set the foundation for most perspectives in political sociology. There are two main sociological perspectives. The Functionalist Perspective, Symbolic Interactionism Perspective and the Conflict Perspective. Functionalism presents society as a machine of interconnected parts that work together in unison to maintain a state of economic balance and social equilibrium for the whole. for example the family, schools, government and religion are social institutions that contribute to ... The bridge is located in one of nature s most beautiful settings, spanning the mile wide bay from Fort Point in San Francisco to the Marin County Shore. Joseph Strauss, specializing in bridge building, was the leader of the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. The start of construction began on January 5, 1993 and, after four years, was completed on April 27, 1997. The bridge was needed to be built because of the growing population after the California Gold Rush. The bridge was a difficult task for engineers and is now an inspiration. He was most certainly familiar with the job. In 1919, a study was begun to see if it would be possible to build a bridge across the Golden Gate. Michael O Shaughnessy was the San Francisco city engineer. He was in charge of the rebuilding of the city after the devastating 1906 earthquake that destroyed much of the city. O Shaughnessy knew the need for the city to have bridges. Most said it could not be done and others said it could be done but it would cost about $100 million to build it (Barter 23). O Shaughnessy and Strauss, both wanting the same thing, got together. After the two consulted, they figured the only way to bridge the channel was to use a suspension bridge. Once O Shaughnessy and Strauss believed they could build the bridge, politics came into the picture. In 1923, the California state legislature passes a bill that allowed the establishment of a Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District. The district s job was to oversee the project and run the bridge once it was built. Over the next few years, many people spoke up both for and against the building of the bridge. The land on both ends of the bridge was owned by the U.S. military. Before any plans could move forward, the military would have to approve the project and give the Bridge District permission to use War Department land. Governments have responded by limiting the access people have to certain parts of the web and monitoring people s internetactivities. There are people who believe that these governments actions have violated civil rights. In order to protect their anonymity, people have turned to The Onion Router (TOR). TOR is a free web browser which protects people s anonymity and allows them to avoid censorship of the World Wide Web . Users of TOR can browse the web without their identities or locations being monitored by anyone. TOR does this by sending user traffic through a complex network consisting of thousands of relays that conceal a user s identity. The term onion refers to the onion like application layers of encryption. TOR encrypts the user s information multiple times and is then sent to its destination without compromising security during the transmission of user data. This data is randomly bounced through a network of relays run by volunteers around the globe. NSA characterized TOR as the kind of high secure, low latency internet anonymity with no contenders for the throne in waiting (Harris, Hudson). So often, people search for the evidence of the kingdom of God rather than simply identifying it. In the present day, the stress is evasively put on works and actions rather than a personal relationship with God. Too many people fall into the trap of participating in as many activities as they can, living to have their good deeds noticed by others; however, the key point is entirely missed. This passage contrasts the present and the future magnificence of the kingdom, which is constantly growing. The kingdom of God includes everyone: the poor, the gentiles, the outcast, the oppressed, the women, Samaritans, tax collectors, the sick, and the sinners. Jesus states that the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news brought to them (Lk. 7:22). If you take this out of the context of which it was written and it may not seem like a very big deal that some of these groups of people would be included in the kingdom of God, but in reality, Jesus caused a lot of controversy through focusing on these neglected and oppressed people. The possession of illnesses and sin created a greater sense of desperation within the people, this allowed more room for grace to abound in their lives and explains the reason why miracles took place in their lives more often than the rich and prestigious upper class. A significant aspect of Jesus teaching was setting people free from sin and giving them dominion over evil (Drane 149). Jesus constantly breaks down social barriers and places heavy emphasis on going against the social boundaries that separate the people. Common Mistakes in Writing Common Mistakes in Writing: Comma Splice In your writing, there are 3 major problems that we commonly have to address as teachers /instructors/professors/etc. I want you to take the time to read about these. While we don t expect this to fix your issues instantly, we are hoping that you ll aim to make less of these mistakes in the future (especially on your papers, where these errors WILL be counted off for). Comma Splice Commas are tricky because there are so many different ways you can use them, but one of the most common ways to use commas is to separate two main clauses that are connected by a coordinating conjunction. If you need any help, contact Dr. Wilson or myself. Common Mistakes in Writing: Sentence Fragments The last major error that we encounter in writing is the sentence fragment. These are a bit trickier to solve than the other two issues, but you should have no problem as long as you take your time with them. Sentence Fragment A part of a sentence that is punctuated as a complete sentence. It may lack a subject, a predicate, or both, or it may be a dependent clause. It can be fixed in one of three ways: He quit his job. And cleared out his desk. (the second sentence is wrong) This deals with a missing subject or predicate. These are usually the result of faulty punctuation of a compound predicate. Either add the subject, or change the punctuation to incorporate the fragment into the preceding sentence: He quite his job. And he cleared out his desk. Or: He quit his job and cleared out his desk. A missing or incomplete predicate is often the result of using a verbal instead of a finite verb. Usually, the best remedy is addition of a helping verb: Sheila waiting to see you. Becomes: Sheila is waiting to see you. Although a dependent clause has a subject and a predicate, it cannot stand alone as a sentence because it begins with a relative ... Rumors run rampant that he was nothing more than a non de plume for someone who wished to keep the anonymity of his identity. There have been names such as Edward De Vere the 17th Earl of Oxford, Sir Francis Bacon, even Queen Elizabeth herself was among those thought to be the true writer of the plays and poems. To start from the beginning of the controversy, the earliest actual documentation of such findings began in 1785 by an oxford scholar named James Wilmot. It was here that when James came up empty handed of any evidence of Shakespeare s plays did he come to the conclusion that it had to have been someone else and that someone was Sir Francis Bacon. James however never reported anything and on his deathbed actually destroyed his writings, but not before telling a fellow scholar, James Corton Cowell, his findings. Cowell would leave and make a presentation to the Ipswich Philosophic Society, and so began the greatest mystery of whether William Shakespeare was a famous playwright or a fraud taking credit for the work of someone else. The search for evidence to either prove or disprove this conspiracy has been one of the hardest searches I have ever had to do.
