SHORT STORY : THE PUNDIT WHO COULD NOT SWIM
1. THE PUNDIT WHO COULD NOT SWIM
Once there was a pundit in a village. One day he was travelling all alone in a boat. he was feeling bored. He
started talking to the boatman. He told the boatman that he had read all the vedas and vedantas. He
wanted to show his vast knowledge to the boatman. He asked the boatman “Do you know the vedas?”, the
boatman humbly replied “No, revered sir”. Then the pundit feeling great and asked the boatman again, “Do
you know ramayana and mahabharatha?”, The boatman replied again, “no revered sir”. Now the pundit was
really feeling great and asked the boatman once again, “Have you read philosophy?”, the boatman replied
again with same politeness, “no revered sir.
After sometime, suddenly, a great storm broke and the boat was about to sink. The boatman asked
the pundit one question, “sir, do you know swimming?” The pundit said “No” then the boatman said, “Sir, i
don't know any vedas vedantas but I know swimming so I can save myself” saying so he jumped into the
river and swam away. The pundit was left aloneand drowned in the river.
Moral of the story is, it is not enough to have bookish knowledge but one should have practical
knowledge to face problems in life. Pundit was very proud of his knowledge but that could not save him.
