Dear Adventurers,
Un-Cruise Adventures introduces you to extraordinary experiences in wild and scenic places. As CEO
and captain of the company, my time spent growing up on boats, living on boats, working on boats,
and a world of travel adventures feed the Un-Cruise vision. A vision that is brought to life through the
expertise of our crew and office team who are just as passionate as I am about providing unconventional
adventures and going beyond your expectations.
Providing true, meaningful travel, of course, requires a special relationship—one of mutual respect and
appreciation—with one another, the wilderness, wildlife, and communities we encounter. It was in this
spirit, and a resurgence of traditional Native values, that during the summer of 2013 I was adopted into
an Alaskan Tlingit tribe. It was a humbling, life-giving event, but it also represents the heart within the
experiences we hope to share with you. After all, time is precious, and what we do with it matters.
Get comfortable as you turn through these pages and uncover what inspires the adventurer in you. New
adventures in 2014 include an Active Adventure featuring exploration in the Olympic Wilderness and the
San Juan Islands of Washington State; four unique Luxury Adventures in Mexico’s Sea of Cortés operating
year-round; and Heritage Adventures sailing port-to-port full season in Alaska. Give us a call, visit our
website and Facebook page, and discover something special.

The Un-Cruise Story
Unrushed. Uncrowded. Unbelievable.
What began in 1997 as yacht cruising in Alaska, pioneered by American Safari Cruises,
has evolved and flourished into a style of exploration we call Un-Cruise Adventures—
unmatched, hands-on small group expeditions under the parent company of InnerSea
Discoveries Alaska, Inc. Today, Un-Cruise Adventures offers several Styles of Adventure
to choose from: Active, Luxury, Heritage, and Charter—each offering an alternative
to traditional cruising. Explore waters inaccessible to larger ships, step ashore in small
communities, and get up-close with wildlife.
Our mission is this: Provide our guests an enriching adventure travel experience and inspire
an appreciation of local cultures and the natural world.
Small group travel is the heart of what we do. Our nimble yachts, expedition vessels, and
replica turn-of-the-century coastal steamer serve as your platform in Alaska, Mexico’s Sea
of Cortés, the Hawaiian Islands, Columbia & Snake Rivers, and in the coastal waters of
Washington & British Columbia. Expert captains and guides lead you on adventure—hiking
into forests and engaging in local communities; kayaking and skiff rides through serene
wilderness; exploring along shore and searching for wildlife. Our adventures are flexible
and vary in order to limit impacts on fragile ecosystems. Filled with unspoiled encounters,
they focus on activities and excursions that complement the wilderness, wildlife, and
culture of the places we visit—to change the way you see the world.

The Un-Cruise
Difference
Unconventional. Uncompromising.
Unrivaled. | 5
This isn’t small ship cruising or big ship cruising. These are Un-Cruise Adventures.
Uncommon casual adventures fully-focused on delivering unexpected experiences—
quality over quantity, wildlife over nightlife, life changing encounters over momentary
entertainment. Our one-of-a-kind, memory-making voyages are designed to be far from
ordinary and carry you outside of ho-hum tourist ports.
Built on a reputation of quality and experience, each Un-Cruise Adventure is intended
to inspire and satisfy your curious nature. Wildlife in its natural environment; personal
exchanges behind the scenes with locals; unmatched moments melding with nature;
and engagement in adventurous activities or living history presentations all innovatively
highlight your days. Whether you’re in the wilds of Alaska, sunning in Mexico’s Sea of Cortés
or the Hawaiian Islands, or honing your inner explorer in the Pacific Northwest—we deliver.
Guests rave about the Un-Cruise experience and often comment on how genuine our
crew is, but our secret is really quite simple… we’re doing what makes us, and you,
happy; we work in thriving environments; we promote good health in our bodies and
on our planet; and we enjoy the freedom from perpetual hurry. We take life in and
give it back—and the best part… is sharing it all with you.

Experts in the Field
In addition to getting extraordinarily close to nature and wildlife, we ensure that all guests
have opportunities to learn about what they are seeing and experiencing. We engage
experts and historians to interpret, narrate, or bring history to life. In Alaska, a National
Park Ranger might join you on board for dinner; or a U.S. Forest Service wilderness
ranger kayaks right up to the vessel and hops aboard to talk about natural history and
their special bond with the land. And on any special theme departure, guest hosts further
your knowledge with hands-on interaction. Supplementing our onboard team, these specialists
provide a tremendous resource and added value for our small contingent of guests.
Onboard Team
The best in the industry—our captains, chefs, expedition team, hotel staff, and deck staff are
individually selected not only for their outstanding knowledge, customer service, and safety
skills, but also for their genuinely welcoming and enthusiastic personalities. Our expedition
and legacy leaders are experienced guides with advanced training in natural and/or cultural
history. Our customer service staff is made up of energetic men and women who are
as excited about where you’re going as you are. Our captains and engineers have the
certifications and skills to provide you with a safe and confident exploration experience.
We’ve deservedly earned our reputation—one guest at a time.

Culinary Sensations
Our executive chefs create exquisite meals, using locally sourced fresh ingredients to reflect
the flavors of your destination. Each day includes an early-riser breakfast of fresh fruit, baked-
onboard pastries and breads, and a full breakfast complete with specialty items. Lunches range
from pasta salads and sandwiches to homemade soups and ethnic dishes. Dinners offer a choice
of entrées, including fresh seafood and meats. Vegetarian dishes are available and special dietary
needs can be met with advance notice. Hors d’oeuvres for the cocktail hour feature a variety
of appetizers, and desserts are varied and plentiful. Fine spirits, wines, and microbrews are
served aboard all of our vessels, with many even featuring sustainable cask wines on tap.
With our Luxury and Heritage Adventures, unless there’s a barbecue on deck or some other
special event, your meals are always served over several courses—with particular attention
to your personal preferences. A more casual-style dining experience is offered on our Active
Adventures, where exceptionally high quality fare is served buffet-style during the day and
plated at dinner. All of our meals ensure fresh, healthful dining experiences.
Wellness, Fitness & Relaxation
Onboard amenities allow you to escape through yoga, relaxing in on-deck hot tubs or saunas,
enjoying a good workout on the fitness equipment, or being pampered by our wellness
director / massage therapist. Nature’s splendor takes care of the rest. And at the end of your
voyage, our onboard team will send you off with a renewed sense of beauty and spirit.
A complimentary massage is an included amenity on Heritage Adventures aboard the
S.S. Legacy, and on Luxury Adventures aboard the Safari Endeavour, Safari Explorer, and
Safari Voyager. Massage is available on Active Adventures aboard all of our expedition
vessels for an additional charge. Depending on your massage therapist, your massage-
style choices may include traditional massage, lomi lomi, shiatsu, or a comfortable
chair massage.

Four is a pretty significant number, and after a lot of thought, more pondering, and then careful consideration,
we arrived at four noteworthy Styles of Adventure: Active, Luxury, Heritage, and Charter. Each style
offers a distinct focus, personality, and range of activities. And depending on which style you choose and
which vessel you’re on, the amenities and activities included may vary, but are all exceptional.
With each of our adventure styles, the atmosphere is always casual, the service attentive, and our bridge is open. Once on board, you’re expected
to relax, give in to the moment, and leave the stresses of the world at home. Our onboard expedition and legacy leaders guide your way and the
wildlife is always unleashed. So without further ado, it’s time to consider your options... unwind each day with a microbrew or glass of wine; a
backdrop of cactus-clad desert rims or snow-capped mountains; kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling or bringing history to life—the choice is yours.
Active Adventures
Explorations equipped for action and delivered from aboard all
three of our expedition vessels: Wilderness Adventurer; Wilderness
Discoverer; Wilderness Explorer.
Focused on experiencing life on the outside—rain or shine—
activities like kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), hikes
ashore, and inflatable skiff excursions top the agenda.
Luxury Adventures
Voyages loaded with extra amenities, soft-adventure, and exclusive
outings are offered aboard our upscale yachts: Safari Endeavour;
Safari Explorer; Safari Quest; Safari Voyager.
Indulge in the good life with included spirits and some pampering.
We balance adventurous activities by mixing them up with cultural
experiences and personal touches like evening turndown service.
Heritage Adventures
The past comes to life afloat and ashore with Living History programs.
Historical characters are revealed and included amenities unfold
aboard a replica turn-of-the-century coastal steamer: S.S.Legacy.
In the wake of some of North America’s early explorers, traveling
port-to-port, our legacy leaders guide you on a stimulating journey
of colorful places and fascinating people.
Charter Adventures
There’s nothing like privacy! And chances are—with maximum
capacities of 22, 36, 60, 64, 76, 86, and 88—we have the
perfect vessel to fit your group size. Every vessel afloat in the
Un-Cruise fleet is available for a private charter.

Come play. We play in the water. In the woods. Even in the mud. We think it’s pretty
cool and our guests tend to agree—so much so, it has them coming back. It’s all about
the untamed wild and woolly wilderness and the many ways you get to discover it. Our
goal is to expose you to the elements and provide a mix of outdoor opportunities, along
with moments or hours of escape and relaxation. The choice and pace are yours.
Delivered from aboard our expedition vessels, our Active Adventures are for spirited,
energetic explorers. So it’s only natural that they’re outfitted with an assortment of
equipment and amped up adventure to accommodate your unleashed energy. We
provide the adventure, equipment, opportunities, meals, the fun, expert crew, and the
vessel—the rest is up to you.
What sets them apart…
u Higher, longer outdoor activity and more of it

Active Adventures
Unbridled Explorations
A
Unsurpassed. | 11
You could be kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) one morning and snorkeling
the next. Another day may offer a gentle afternoon shore walk or have you feeling the
muscles burn with a rigorous hike (even a little bushwhacking). And if you just feel like
taking it easy, that’s okay, too. For those who take their adventure on the lighter side,
you can enjoy riding in the skiff or chatting up the captain on the bridge.
Whether you are looking for mild, moderate, or rigorous outdoor pursuits, or a
more Zen wilderness experience, we offer activities to suit a variety of skill levels.
We rank our hiking excursions with an activity level to ensure the right fit: 1 – Easy;
2 – Moderate; 3 – Challenging; 4 – Strenuous; 5 – Difficult. Depending on where you
might be exploring, the expedition team on board will provide the insight needed for
you to make a safe and enjoyable choice.
Gearing Up
Each expedition vessel is equipped with top-of-the-line kayaks and SUPs. There is a
nominal daily use charge for snorkeling gear and wet suits. Limited quantities of hiking
poles, binoculars, mud boots, and rain gear are also available on board for your use,
but to ensure availability, fit, and comfort, we strongly encourage you to bring your
own. A detailed packing list is available on our website.
Activities may include:
u Whale watching
u Unbelievable kayaking and SUPing
u Inflatable boat excursions
u Morning yoga and stretching
u Hikes in the wilderness, to a cave, or along shore
u Unequaled glacier viewing
u Untamed wildlife observation
u “Polar bear plunges”
u Discoveries by underwater hydrophone and bow-mounted camera
u Engaging cultural encounters
Adventure opportunities abound, but just in case you want more, we’ve arranged some
additional excursions with local experts to further enhance your experience. Guided fishing,
flightseeing, and camping trips (to name a few) are available for purchase on board.

Get Ready. Get Set. Go.
It’s about the luxury of experiences—nature’s generous displays; timeless days; freedom
to unwind; and indulging yourself, just a little. It’s a place where discriminating travelers

of included amenities and services that allow you to escape. And depending on where
you are, the adventure toys you need—like kayaks, stand-up paddle boards (SUPs),
sailboats, snorkel gear, hiking poles, and rubber boots—are always provided. Connecting
with your environment happens naturally. Nature and encounters set the pace.

Take a breather. Have a fantastic, easy-going day—stroll along a beach or take a
two-hour hike at modest elevation or to a “great to be alive” waterfall. Back on
board, go for a shore-hugging spin in the kayak or skiff, then into the hot tub for
a double bubbly of muscle warming and complimentary champagne. Nothing too
extreme and surely something you’ll feel good about. Inside and out.
Our small guest numbers keep your experience exclusive and personal. We engage
local experts to ensure you have an opportunity to learn as much about what you are
seeing and experiencing as you want. Experiences on or off the yacht are designed
to provide adventures few travelers ever experience.

There’s no actual time travel on one of our Heritage Adventures, however, you will
transcend the modern era. From aboard a replica turn-of-the-century coastal steamer,
you’ll relive days of yore on an unparalleled voyage—unmatched by any other cruise
line. Learn and feel the spirit of an illustrious past with exhibits ashore and onboard
reenactments, where your legacy team brings back heroes of yesteryear and history
comes to life along the historic routes taken by those who came before.
When you sail aboard the S.S. Legacy, we bring the past forward. Period décor defines an
atmosphere as elegant and refined as the era. High-quality service and modern amenities
provide extra pampering. After a day of touring, enjoy an evening cocktail and a spin on
the dance floor or a soak in the on-deck hot tub.
What defines the experience…

Unfolding History

Untarnished. | 15
Nautical history. Human history. The history
of nations. Perhaps your very ancestors sailed
the seas making discoveries of their own and
meeting fascinating personalities. Sharing that
same sense of adventure, you may find yourself
being greeted by Teddy Roosevelt, founder of
the National Park Service; standing on the bow
alongside John Muir, awed by the thunderous
crack of a glacier; or finding inspiration, as
a budding photographer and geographer,
listening to the tales of Eliza Scidmore.
There are many tales to be told and your
S.S. Legacy crew unveils the epic tales of
exploration and adventure of the places you’ll
explore—in historic ports steeped in legend and fact; on tours that guide you through
time; during visits with local historians and native peoples who unfold the past; and
with characters of yore that join you to share their stories. Delivering the unexpected,
you’ll be immersed in authentic, dramatic representations of the most extraordinary and
significant historical periods of the regions.
Timely Elements
You won’t have to don buckskin or a coonskin cap, but you may encounter someone
who does. Either way, we’ll make your journey memorable in unimaginable ways.
u Interpretive staff prepares you for visits ashore
u Characters appear in period costume
u Dance floor for entertaining evenings on board
u Presentations by knowledgeable historians
u Expert guest speakers step on board keeping history alive
u See important artifacts in the regions visited
u Local residents share their heritage
u Informative activities enhance your place in time

Visions of the Past
With a private charter, it’s all about you. Charters provide an excellent way to bring together
family, friends, or a corporate incentive group without the hassle of arranging provisions,
crew, or routes. With a wide range of sizes—22, 36, 60, 64, 76, 86, 88—there’s a vessel
with your group size written all over it. Let us tailor a Charter Adventure with your special
focus in mind—complete with activities, crew, and expedition staff. We handle all the details,
leaving you to sit back and soak in the experience of a lifetime.
Private Group Travel
For groups of travelers who share a common interest or mission, whether it be an affinity
group or a corporate team, we offer a full-service platform to meet your needs. Companies
can tap into team building activities and potential U.S. flag tax breaks. The privacy afforded
by a charter is unparalleled, and the natural settings and activities available for discretionary
time are incomparable. Imagine finishing up a meeting or socializing and then stepping out
on deck to photograph humpback whales or kayaking and sailing in a pristine cove.
Private Family Cruises
There are many reasons why families and friends take time to relax and travel together:
birthdays, retirement, reunions, anniversaries, weddings, or “just because.” Events that
create lasting memories. Our vessels are ideally suited for those unique occasions in life.
We’ll work with you to customize a Charter Adventure in which all the pieces come
together effortlessly. Simply tell us what you’d like, and we’ll make it happen.

Shaped by massive glaciers over millions of years, the temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska (also
known as the Alaska Panhandle) reveals wildlife-rich fjords and spectacular scenery. Throughout
history, its channels and waterways have served as important travel corridors for Native Tlingit,
Tsimshian, and Haida peoples and Gold Rush era steamships. The Tongass National Forest—the
largest in the U.S.—is 16.8 million acres and constitutes the majority of area. The 3.3-million-acre
Glacier Bay National Park was recognized in 1986 as a biosphere reserve, and in 1992, earned
its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other features of the region include the Alexander
Archipelago and Misty Fjords National Monument.
Thoreau once wrote, “We need the tonic of wildness... We can never have enough of nature.”
Today, receding glaciers reveal a landscape that has been covered with ice for tens of thousands of
years and, depending on your itinerary, our expert teams guide you on a journey of adventurous
activities, luxury in the pursuit of adventure, or on a revealing voyage of the region’s telling past.
Each adventure shares an abundance of nature—brown and black bears, wolf and deer, mountains
and glaciers, humpback whales and orca, rainforests, bald eagles, and sea birds. Through time,
explorers, authors, naturalists, captains, and visionaries have made discoveries in this unforgettable
natural laboratory—now, you can too.

Days 2-11
This much wilderness has an uncanny ability to
inspire. Take in the pure air and fill your days with
fjords and rainforests, kayaking and hiking, and
genuinecompanionship—orca,seals,sealions,sea
otters, whales, dolphins, porpoise, sea birds, bald
eagles, and of course, your fellow adventurers.
Along the way, uncover perfectly hidden places,
ideal for a morning hike or afternoon of paddling
and skiffing. Perhaps your first attempt ever at
paddle boarding! Pass northward through Canada’s
and Alaska’s Inside Passages discovering a world of
contrasts—gray misty mornings, white-capped
mountains, and colorful totems. During stops in
Ketchikan and Klawock, you’ll learn firsthand the
history and influence of local Native cultures. Your
passages into the Misty Fjords National Monument
and through El Capitan Passage unveil some of
the most pristine and monumental vistas of your
journey. And there’ll be plenty of whale watching
occasions in Chatham Strait, Frederick Sound, and
Stephen’s Passage—the summer feeding grounds
for the largest concentration of humpback whales
in the northern hemisphere.
Days 12-13
Inhale slowly and take it in–it’s your last full day
in Alaska. Explore a long and narrow glacially
carved fjord and be awed by blue ice and the
calving white thunder of a glacier. Keep your

it’s your turn. Setting sail through the Salish Sea, it’s time to embark with your expedition team and
skilled crew on a wilderness discovery of your own.

Days 2-11
Glacial landscapes, legends of the mythical shape-
shifting “Kushtaka,” and the zigzagging navigational
lights of “Christmas Tree Lane” are just a handful
of the interesting nuggets you could write home
about. Sheer granite walls line a winding fjord and
large floating icebergs pass by on your approach
to the twin Sawyer Glaciers. There’ll be hikes
on scenic backcountry trails, paddling along
pristine waterways, and intertidal shore walks in a
backdrop of natural splendor. Wildlife abounds in
Behm Canal—orca, porpoise, sea lions, brown
and black bears, mink, marten, eagles, and otters.
Keep watch for breaching whales in Frederick
Sound. In port visits to Wrangell and Ketchikan,
hear stories of  Tlingit culture, view recently carved
totems, and stroll down notorious Creek Street,
once a red-light district in downtown Ketchikan.
Wind your way into the stunning glacial valleys of
Misty Fjords for an up-close look at this majestic
wilderness until your exploration turns south
through Canada’s Inside Passage.
Days 12-13
The tranquility of the past days winds to a close
in the serene San Juan Islands—an archipelago
of islands first charted in 1791. A stop in
quaint Friday Harbor immerses you in the
area’s maritime history. Spend the afternoon
gunkholing and a last chance to kayak or ride
A turning point in any life, it was Eliza’s first trip to Alaska. Led by a strong mind and
heart, Eliza Scidmore—writer, photographer, lecturer, geographer—was a maverick in her own right.
In the summer of 1883 she set sail on a fascinating journey along the Inside Passage delivering
supplies and mail. Her first book recounted her Alaska travels, launching a lifelong career as a travel
writer. As you depart Juneau and head south for Seattle, your adventure will surely be as memorable.

Imagine what it must have been like stepping
aboard a steamship bound for Alaska, outfitted
with nothing but a canvas backpack, bedroll,
some crusty bread, a canteen, and visions of
fortune—it’s quite the contrast to the modern
amenities, fine dining, and attentive crew that’ll
provide your comfort. Between Seattle and
Juneau, you’ll travel between ports encountering
pristine wilderness and wildlife. In quaint towns

in time—life as a miner, lessons in statehood
and whaling, Russian history, and Tlingit culture.
Witness calving glaciers, barking sea lions, and
soaring sea birds in Glacier Bay National Park, and
through the northern whale waters of Icy Strait,
keep watch for the gentle humpbacks. Feasting
on krill. Breaching. Giving you the fluke.
Days 12-13
The Gold Rush greatly changed Haines and
Skagway. Learn the area’s early history as a
trading center and the significance of notable
landmarks. When in Haines—a common spot
for birders—keep watch high overhead for the
white-feathered heads of resident bald eagles.
Skagway’s wooden boardwalks line the town’s
historic buildings where tales of betrayal, fortune,
and mystery come alive. Ride a narrow gauge
The lure of gold and promise of riches beckoned Jack London, although
perhaps it’s the call of the wild and tales of adventures past that lures you. As one of the most published

gold of his early stories. Your own story unfolds from the moment you embark and come face-to-face
with some of history’s most revered and feared personalities.

Days 2-6
Pass go and don’t stop as you sail into Glacier
Bay, one of America’s crown jewel national
parks—it’s yours for the taking. Accompanied
by one of the park’s rangers, take a boot-sucking
hike through sandbars and rainforest and go
face-to-face with glaciers, only to be greeted
with a warm mug of hot chocolate when you
step back on board. Lingering for wildlife during
your three full days in the park, you’ll find
whales, sea lions, mountain goats, sea otters,
bears, moose, eagles, brightly-colored puffins,
Black Oystercatchers, and many other species
of rare sea birds. With camera in hand, join the
captain on the bridge or your expedition team
out on deck and set your course for arguably
the richest whale waters in Southeast Alaska.
Ride the skiffs for a closer inspection of the
rugged, wild shore with eyes set for possible
bear sightings and anchor in remote waters for
an opportunity to lower the kayaks and skiffs or
enjoy an intertidal walk with your guides.
Days 7-8
The small boat haven of Peril Strait connects
to the very narrow, historic, and wildlife-rich
Sergius Narrows—a great place to watch the
shoreline for bears, the waters for otters and
whales, and to look skyward for eagles. After an

effort, in March of 1867 it became Seward’s most successful achievement. The purchase was mocked
by the public as “Seward’s Folly,” but rolling in his grave, he had the last laugh with the discovery of gold a

“Just think! Some night the stars will gleam”—and you could be sitting in
the hot tub beneath them. Back at the turn of the century, author and poet Robert Service didn’t have
a hot tub, but he did write that line about the stars. And after spending several years on the Alaska
frontier, you can bet that he’d seen a few. To be sure, he’d seen and heard plenty—gripping yarns of the
wild Northwest and the pursuit of “the muck called gold.” Falling in love with their stories, he became
an armchair adventurer. It’s time to pack your sense of adventure, and write your own.

It was wild and woolly then, and as you’ll discover
firsthand, it still holds true today. The remoteness
is unmatched, and this hidden gem is very
much alive—alive with vivid, raw forest, and an
abundance of wildlife both above and below
the water’s surface. In unhindered passages and
hidden coves, take to the water by kayak, paddle
board, and skiff, keeping watch for a magical array
of marine life. A popular summer feeding ground
for whales, join playful porpoise, orca, humpbacks,

eyes alert for sea birds, eagles, wolves, and black
bear. Discover a rustic Native community thriving
on the farthest reaches of the wild Alaska coastline;

Alaska and one of the largest mapped caves in the
Americas. Eager to share, your captain and expert

The same could also be said about the young American naturalist, anthropologist, paleontologist, and
geographer William Dall’s many expeditions to Alaska. The undisputed Alaska expert in both biology
and Native cultures, he spent years writing about Alaska and documenting his vast collection for the
Smithsonian Museum. Dall loved Alaska, and in 1880, he even took his new bride there for their
honeymoon! Setting sail through the Tongass National Forest, it’s time to make your own discoveries.

The “when to go” question comes up often, in fact it’s almost always the first question asked.
Rain, bears, whales, sunlight, northern lights—how much, how little, how long, what variety,
how high, how low—these are all key interests when planning your Alaskan vacation. It’s
The Big Land, and therefore, there is no “cookie cutter” answer to these curiosities.
Timing is Everything!

Just south of California lies an unrushed and uncrowded inland sea known as the Gulf of California,
Vermilion Sea, Sea of Cortez, or Sea of Cortés. A birder’s paradise—this rich archipelago serves as an
important bird refuge and migration corridor. It is a place author John Steinbeck and marine biologist
Ed Ricketts found “ferocious with life” and described by Jacques Cousteau as the “world’s aquarium” and
the “Galápagos of North America.” We tend to agree. UNESCO even declared it a World Heritage Site
and Biosphere Reserve, noting it as one of the most biologically diverse marine environments on Earth.
These wildlife-rich waters and islands are home to both plants and animals found nowhere else.
Each of our island-hopping Luxury Adventures in Mexico’s Sea of Cortés uncovers a world of breathtaking
beauty and wildlife—giant and small lizards, sea turtles, boobies, pelicans, frigate birds, blue whales, gray
whales, orca, humpback, pilot and fin whales, dolphins, whale sharks, mantas, and sea lions. Kayak in
coastal mangroves and in crystalline blue coves. Hike along dunes, cactus-clad ridges, and among desert
scrub. Swim with playful sea lions, watch whales, and snorkel among colorful coral. And in a picturesque
setting of red rock cliffs, discover a centuries-old town or relax on a white-sand beach. Explore this
extraordinary place and discover firsthand how small the human presence here truly is.
“Pam and I really enjoyed Baja. A few weeks prior to departure, I think my wife was having
second thoughts about the itinerary, but after the whale watching, she was hooked.
She said it was the best cruise we had ever been on—we have been on over 45.”

Wildlife and exploration top your agenda
over the next several days. It’s the perfect
environment for a marine life search. Look
out for pods of dolphins, blue, fin, sei, orca
and sperm whales as they spout and dive in
the surrounding waters, and for Blue-footed
boobies, brown pelicans, cormorants, and
gulls perched above on a rocky ledge. Whale
sharks, the largest known species of fish in the
ocean, are known to frequent the Bahía de La
Paz—watch for the ‘footprint’ of these gentle
giants along the water’s tranquil surface. On the
peninsula’s mainland, take an extended hike to
the lost Dolores Mission, abandoned in 1768;
at Bahía Agua Verde, experience the “real Baja”
with a burro ride and bonfire as you visit with a
local ranchero family; and enjoy a walking tour
in the seaside village of Loreto and leisure time
shopping and strolling La Paz’s malecón. Desert
landscapes, a mangrove sanctuary, and crystalline
waters provide the backdrop for a week of skiff
exploration, hiking, kayaking, and stargazing.

Few places on Earth have been captivating explorers for centuries and can boast such
biological diversity. So when legendary diver Jacques Cousteau tagged the Sea of Cortés as the
“world’s aquarium” and “Galápagos of North America,” he had experienced firsthand the richness

sunset—beginning with the snorkelers’ jewel of Cabo Pulmo, a living coral reef, and Isla Cerralvo,
whose official name is Isla Jacques Cousteau.

There’ll be excellent opportunities for viewing
marine life, bird watching, and discovering history
this week. On some of the of the most isolated
islands in the gulf, you’ll visit protected Biosphere
Reserves, learn of ancient Seri beliefs and their
intimate relationship with the land and sea, and
perhaps experience “The Hunting of the Snark”
(a search for boojums on a desert hike). Cruising
through the nutrient-rich Midriff Islands, you’ll
uncover their high abundance of pelagic fish,
marine mammals, and over 50 species of birds—
Blue-footed boobies, brown pelicans, cormorants,
gulls, or try and catch a glimpse of a Costa’s
hummingbird or ash-throated flycatchers—you’ll
need to keep your eyes peeled both above and
below the surface. Whether snorkeling,kayaking,
paddle boarding, or hiking, surprises are surely in
store. You may get lucky with a chance to snorkel
alongside a sea turtle or gentle whale shark. There
is no better place to do it.
Days 7-8
Your last day in paradise takes you to Isla San
Esteban, home to many odd species found
only in these islands. Keep your eyes peeled
on and between the rocks for spiny-tailed
iguana and Pinto chuckwalla lizards basking in
the sun. Desert hikes, kayaking, and snorkeling

enjoy the Captain’s Farewell Dinner and a special
presentation from your expedition team. After
breakfast, your weeklong adventure comes to an
end with a transfer to the Hermosillo Airport.
“HIS mind had no horizon,” Steinbeck wrote of the character Doc in Cannery
Row, who he modeled after his close friend Ed “Doc” Ricketts—marine biologist, ecologist, and
philosopher. Although often accredited to Steinbeck, it was the words of Ricketts, “ferocious with
life,” that resonates so intensely in The Log From the Sea of Cortez, a telling of their 1940 expedition
in the Sea of Cortés which was based on Ricketts’ journal. Setting sail out of Guaymas, witness that
same ferocity as you follow the northern path of their trip on your own expedition.

2014 Un-Cruise Adventures brochure

  • 1. Unrushed. Uncrowded. Unbelievable. November 2013 — April 2015 ® Active u Luxury u Heritage u Charter Alaska x Mexico’s Sea of Cortés x Hawaiian Islands Columbia & Snake Rivers x Coastal Washington & British Columbia
  • 2. 2 | Un-Cruise® Dear Adventurers, Un-Cruise Adventures introduces you to extraordinary experiences in wild and scenic places. As CEO and captain of the company, my time spent growing up on boats, living on boats, working on boats, and a world of travel adventures feed the Un-Cruise vision. A vision that is brought to life through the expertise of our crew and office team who are just as passionate as I am about providing unconventional adventures and going beyond your expectations. Providing true, meaningful travel, of course, requires a special relationship—one of mutual respect and appreciation—with one another, the wilderness, wildlife, and communities we encounter. It was in this spirit, and a resurgence of traditional Native values, that during the summer of 2013 I was adopted into an Alaskan Tlingit tribe. It was a humbling, life-giving event, but it also represents the heart within the experiences we hope to share with you. After all, time is precious, and what we do with it matters. Get comfortable as you turn through these pages and uncover what inspires the adventurer in you. New adventures in 2014 include an Active Adventure featuring exploration in the Olympic Wilderness and the San Juan Islands of Washington State; four unique Luxury Adventures in Mexico’s Sea of Cortés operating year-round; and Heritage Adventures sailing port-to-port full season in Alaska. Give us a call, visit our website and Facebook page, and discover something special. Choose to Un-Cruise! Dan Blanchard Captain & Owner Welcome Aboard!
  • 3. Unexpected. | 3 The Un-Cruise Story Unrushed. Uncrowded. Unbelievable. What began in 1997 as yacht cruising in Alaska, pioneered by American Safari Cruises, has evolved and flourished into a style of exploration we call Un-Cruise Adventures— unmatched, hands-on small group expeditions under the parent company of InnerSea Discoveries Alaska, Inc. Today, Un-Cruise Adventures offers several Styles of Adventure to choose from: Active, Luxury, Heritage, and Charter—each offering an alternative to traditional cruising. Explore waters inaccessible to larger ships, step ashore in small communities, and get up-close with wildlife. Our mission is this: Provide our guests an enriching adventure travel experience and inspire an appreciation of local cultures and the natural world. Small group travel is the heart of what we do. Our nimble yachts, expedition vessels, and replica turn-of-the-century coastal steamer serve as your platform in Alaska, Mexico’s Sea of Cortés, the Hawaiian Islands, Columbia & Snake Rivers, and in the coastal waters of Washington & British Columbia. Expert captains and guides lead you on adventure—hiking into forests and engaging in local communities; kayaking and skiff rides through serene wilderness; exploring along shore and searching for wildlife. Our adventures are flexible and vary in order to limit impacts on fragile ecosystems. Filled with unspoiled encounters, they focus on activities and excursions that complement the wilderness, wildlife, and culture of the places we visit—to change the way you see the world.

  • 6. This isn’t small ship cruising or big ship cruising. These are Un-Cruise Adventures. Uncommon casual adventures fully-focused on delivering unexpected experiences— quality over quantity, wildlife over nightlife, life changing encounters over momentary entertainment. Our one-of-a-kind, memory-making voyages are designed to be far from ordinary and carry you outside of ho-hum tourist ports. Built on a reputation of quality and experience, each Un-Cruise Adventure is intended to inspire and satisfy your curious nature. Wildlife in its natural environment; personal exchanges behind the scenes with locals; unmatched moments melding with nature; and engagement in adventurous activities or living history presentations all innovatively highlight your days. Whether you’re in the wilds of Alaska, sunning in Mexico’s Sea of Cortés or the Hawaiian Islands, or honing your inner explorer in the Pacific Northwest—we deliver. Guests rave about the Un-Cruise experience and often comment on how genuine our crew is, but our secret is really quite simple… we’re doing what makes us, and you, happy; we work in thriving environments; we promote good health in our bodies and on our planet; and we enjoy the freedom from perpetual hurry. We take life in and give it back—and the best part… is sharing it all with you. Un-Cruise Adventures Far From Ordinary 6 | Un-Cruise®
  • 7. Unassuming. | 7 Experts in the Field In addition to getting extraordinarily close to nature and wildlife, we ensure that all guests have opportunities to learn about what they are seeing and experiencing. We engage experts and historians to interpret, narrate, or bring history to life. In Alaska, a National Park Ranger might join you on board for dinner; or a U.S. Forest Service wilderness ranger kayaks right up to the vessel and hops aboard to talk about natural history and their special bond with the land. And on any special theme departure, guest hosts further your knowledge with hands-on interaction. Supplementing our onboard team, these specialists provide a tremendous resource and added value for our small contingent of guests. Onboard Team The best in the industry—our captains, chefs, expedition team, hotel staff, and deck staff are individually selected not only for their outstanding knowledge, customer service, and safety skills, but also for their genuinely welcoming and enthusiastic personalities. Our expedition and legacy leaders are experienced guides with advanced training in natural and/or cultural history. Our customer service staff is made up of energetic men and women who are as excited about where you’re going as you are. Our captains and engineers have the certifications and skills to provide you with a safe and confident exploration experience. We’ve deservedly earned our reputation—one guest at a time. Delivering Experience Adventure-After-Adventure
  • 8. 8 | Un-Cruise® Culinary Sensations Our executive chefs create exquisite meals, using locally sourced fresh ingredients to reflect the flavors of your destination. Each day includes an early-riser breakfast of fresh fruit, baked- onboard pastries and breads, and a full breakfast complete with specialty items. Lunches range from pasta salads and sandwiches to homemade soups and ethnic dishes. Dinners offer a choice of entrées, including fresh seafood and meats. Vegetarian dishes are available and special dietary needs can be met with advance notice. Hors d’oeuvres for the cocktail hour feature a variety of appetizers, and desserts are varied and plentiful. Fine spirits, wines, and microbrews are served aboard all of our vessels, with many even featuring sustainable cask wines on tap. With our Luxury and Heritage Adventures, unless there’s a barbecue on deck or some other special event, your meals are always served over several courses—with particular attention to your personal preferences. A more casual-style dining experience is offered on our Active Adventures, where exceptionally high quality fare is served buffet-style during the day and plated at dinner. All of our meals ensure fresh, healthful dining experiences. Wellness, Fitness & Relaxation Onboard amenities allow you to escape through yoga, relaxing in on-deck hot tubs or saunas, enjoying a good workout on the fitness equipment, or being pampered by our wellness director / massage therapist. Nature’s splendor takes care of the rest. And at the end of your voyage, our onboard team will send you off with a renewed sense of beauty and spirit. A complimentary massage is an included amenity on Heritage Adventures aboard the S.S. Legacy, and on Luxury Adventures aboard the Safari Endeavour, Safari Explorer, and Safari Voyager. Massage is available on Active Adventures aboard all of our expedition vessels for an additional charge. Depending on your massage therapist, your massage- style choices may include traditional massage, lomi lomi, shiatsu, or a comfortable chair massage. Life On Board Escape to Wellness Amenities vary by vessel; refer to the Fleet At-A-Glance chart on page 72 for details.
  • 9. Unlimited. | 9 Four is a pretty significant number, and after a lot of thought, more pondering, and then careful consideration, we arrived at four noteworthy Styles of Adventure: Active, Luxury, Heritage, and Charter. Each style offers a distinct focus, personality, and range of activities. And depending on which style you choose and which vessel you’re on, the amenities and activities included may vary, but are all exceptional. With each of our adventure styles, the atmosphere is always casual, the service attentive, and our bridge is open. Once on board, you’re expected to relax, give in to the moment, and leave the stresses of the world at home. Our onboard expedition and legacy leaders guide your way and the wildlife is always unleashed. So without further ado, it’s time to consider your options... unwind each day with a microbrew or glass of wine; a backdrop of cactus-clad desert rims or snow-capped mountains; kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling or bringing history to life—the choice is yours. • 21. Shaped by massive glaciers over millions of years, the temperate rainforest of Southeast Alaska (also known as the Alaska Panhandle) reveals wildlife-rich fjords and spectacular scenery. Throughout history, its channels and waterways have served as important travel corridors for Native Tlingit, Tsimshian, and Haida peoples and Gold Rush era steamships. The Tongass National Forest—the largest in the U.S.—is 16.8 million acres and constitutes the majority of area. The 3.3-million-acre Glacier Bay National Park was recognized in 1986 as a biosphere reserve, and in 1992, earned its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other features of the region include the Alexander Archipelago and Misty Fjords National Monument. Thoreau once wrote, “We need the tonic of wildness... We can never have enough of nature.” Today, receding glaciers reveal a landscape that has been covered with ice for tens of thousands of years and, depending on your itinerary, our expert teams guide you on a journey of adventurous activities, luxury in the pursuit of adventure, or on a revealing voyage of the region’s telling past. Each adventure shares an abundance of nature—brown and black bears, wolf and deer, mountains and glaciers, humpback whales and orca, rainforests, bald eagles, and sea birds. Through time, explorers, authors, naturalists, captains, and visionaries have made discoveries in this unforgettable natural laboratory—now, you can too. • 45. Undeniable. | 45 Just south of California lies an unrushed and uncrowded inland sea known as the Gulf of California, Vermilion Sea, Sea of Cortez, or Sea of Cortés. A birder’s paradise—this rich archipelago serves as an important bird refuge and migration corridor. It is a place author John Steinbeck and marine biologist Ed Ricketts found “ferocious with life” and described by Jacques Cousteau as the “world’s aquarium” and the “Galápagos of North America.” We tend to agree. UNESCO even declared it a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve, noting it as one of the most biologically diverse marine environments on Earth. These wildlife-rich waters and islands are home to both plants and animals found nowhere else. Each of our island-hopping Luxury Adventures in Mexico’s Sea of Cortés uncovers a world of breathtaking beauty and wildlife—giant and small lizards, sea turtles, boobies, pelicans, frigate birds, blue whales, gray whales, orca, humpback, pilot and fin whales, dolphins, whale sharks, mantas, and sea lions. Kayak in coastal mangroves and in crystalline blue coves. Hike along dunes, cactus-clad ridges, and among desert scrub. Swim with playful sea lions, watch whales, and snorkel among colorful coral. And in a picturesque setting of red rock cliffs, discover a centuries-old town or relax on a white-sand beach. Explore this extraordinary place and discover firsthand how small the human presence here truly is. “Pam and I really enjoyed Baja. A few weeks prior to departure, I think my wife was having second thoughts about the itinerary, but after the whale watching, she was hooked. She said it was the best cruise we had ever been on—we have been on over 45.” — Wayne & Pam W., Kingwood, TX Mexico’s Sea of Cortés World Heritage Site & Biosphere Reserve
