OTP combines OpenStreetMap data with open timetable feeds in the GTFS format to create its representation of a transportation network. The OpenTripPlanner Analyst (OTPA) modules build upon the core journey planner to provide travel time mapping and accessibility visualisation for use in town planning, transport planning, and public consultations. OpenStreetMap data allows OTPA to consider pedestrian and bicycleconnectivity at high spatial resolution, sidestepping the problematic spatial aggregation of data. Our presentation will cover the use of OpenStreetMap data in OTP Analyst studies, the advantages of working with OSM data, and direct participation in the OSM community by local transportation authorities.

Use of GIS and geospatial data in archeology. Contribution to: Quarto Workshop Italiano "Open Source, Free Software e Open Format nei processi di ricerca archeologica", Roma, 27 e 28 aprile 2009. Sede centrale del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) http://www.archeo-foss.org/ Abstract: With the widespread availability of desktop GIS, archaeologists have gained the tools to comprehensively analyze the important spatial component of their data. Initial archaeological use of GIS was (and still is in many instances) for making maps of archaeological sites. Rather quickly GIS became used for predictive modeling of site locations. More recently, viewshed analysis has seen increasing use, in efforts to understand prehistoric perceptions of the landscape. In the last years, Open Source GIS software evolved to a powerful set of software products which support both scientific as well as common GIS users. In particular, the integration of GIS with image processing capabilities, geospatial data analysis, database management system and Web mapping software enables archaeologists to perform their tasks in a completely free environment. Since 2006, the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) operates as umbrella foundation for Web Mapping, Desktop GIS Applications, Geospatial Libraries, Metadata Catalog as well as the Public Geospatial Data project and the Education and Curriculum project. In our presentation, we focus on GRASS GIS (http://grass.osgeo.org/) for spatial data analysis and visualization. GRASS is the largest Open Source GIS program currently available. The new version GRASS 6.4.0 is interoperable as it supports all common vector and raster GIS formats. Its capabilities cover raster and volume spatial analysis and modeling, time-series and landscape analysis, image processing, and visualization of 2D and 3D (voxel) raster data. Vector data can be digitized, extracted, extruded to 3D, and vector networks analyzed. Vector data are handled topologically. Vector attributes are stored in internal or externally connected databases. All general GIS tasks like map reprojection, georeferencing, and transformations are available for raster and vector data. The data storage concept of GRASS permits for single as well as multi-user access set up via network file system. GRASS 6.4.0, the new stable release after more than one year of development and testing, brings a number of exciting enhancements to the GIS. Besides the hundreds of new module features, supported data formats, and language translations. The 6.4.0 release also runs in MS-Windows, a new installer is provided. A new graphical user interface with integrated location wizard and new vector digitizer is also included. The presentation concludes with a series of applications relevant to archaeology including image processing, Lidar data analysis, fast viewshed analysis and more.

This data from sources such as mobile phones, sensors, and location-based services can be visualised to reflect urban activity. Usable and approachable geovisualisations allow casual users and experts alike to make sense of this data, to see the city in different perspectives, and to understand their environment. In my talk, I explore the challenges in urban data visualisation, as well as showcase multiple projects that demonstrate current approaches to and new thinkings about urban mobility.

The Linked Map project is part of the FP7 PlanetData project (http://planet-data.eu/), whose aim is to help organisations to get their big amounts of data exposed online in a useful form with quality. Regarding to this goal and as demonstration of the LMS technology (a transparent semantic proxy for WMS 1.3.0), the project Linked Map has developed a Web platform (http://linkedmap.unizar.es/crowdsourcing-platform/). This platform enables users to assess the quality of an automatic integration of INSPIRE data and Volunteer Geographic Information (VGI). The platform uses a LMS instance. This demonstration involves an experiment that combines in a meaningful way a big INSPIRE dataset that contains data from Annex I and Annex III themes (BCN/BTN25) with VGI data (OpenStreetMap). The Linked Map project was developed by IAAA Lab (Universidad Zaragoza) and GeoSpatiumLab. These slides were presented at JIIDE 2014 (Lisbon)

Upgrading maps with Linked Data

Deep Learning is now the standard in object detection, but it is not easy to analyze large amounts of images, especially in an interactive fashion. Traditionally, there has been a gap between Deep Learning frameworks, which excel at image processing, and more traditional ETL and data science tools, which are usually not designed to handle huge batches of complex data types such as images. In this talk, we show how manipulating large corpora of images can be accomplished in a few lines of code because of recent developments in Apache Spark. Thanks to Spark’s unique ability to blend different libraries, we show how to start from satellite images and rapidly build complex queries on high level information such as houses or buildings. This is possible thanks to Magellan, a geospatial package, and Deep Learning Pipelines, a library that streamlines the integration of Deep Learning frameworks in Spark. At the end of this session, you will walk away with the confidence that you can solve your own image detection problems at any scale thanks to the power of Spark.

Digital Repositories are continuously evolving into platforms aimed at managing, visualizing, curating and preserving a variety of different cultural digital objects together with their relationships To support interoperability and to allow a broad dissemination and re-use of cultural heritage and research results, we have built two DSpace add-ons to be released as open source, the IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) Image Viewer and the audio/video streaming module. The first one manages the complexity of digital objects such as page sequences, chapters and sections, exposing the metadata and the structure with the IIIF presentation API and use the IIIF API to provide fast visualization and low bandwidth use. The streaming module allows to stream audio / video content loaded in the repository using adaptive streaming and the DASH industry standard. Both modules provide a full open source stack or enable the integration with external Images and Media Server. Managing the relations between digital objects both in a hierarchical or relational way is a key feature, in order to manage every kind of cultural heritage material. Thus we are enhancing the DSpace Data Model in order to provide not only structural metadata management but also the description of relationships within cultural contexts. The linked open data cloud is constantly evolving as datasets are continuously updated with newer versions. As a result, representing, querying, and visualizing the temporal dimension of linked data is crucial. This is especially important for geospatial datasets that form the backbone of large scale open data publication efforts in many sectors of the economy (the public sector, the Earth observation sector). Although there has been some work on the representation and querying of linked geospatial data that change over time, to the best of our knowledge, there is currently no tool that offers spatiotemporal visualization of such data. Although the visualization of the temporal evolution of geospatial data is common practice in the GIS area, there is no tool that handles linked geospatial data and allows for the visualization of both the spatial and temporal dimensions, to the best of our knowledge. In this demo paper, we present SexTant, a Web-based system for the visualization and exploration of time-evolving linked geospatial data and the creation, sharing, and collaborative editing of "temporally-enriched" thematic maps which are produced by combining different sources of such data.

The talk presents the evolution of Big-Data systems from single-purpose MapReduce frameworks to fully general computational infrastructures. In particular, I will follow the evolution of Hadoop, and show the benefits and challenges of a new architectural paradigm that decouples the resource management component (YARN) from the specifics of the application frameworks (e.g., MapReduce, Tez, REEF, Giraph, Naiad, Dryad, Spark,...). We argue that beside the primary goals of increasing scalability and programming model flexibility, this transformation dramatically facilitates innovation. In this context, I will present some of our contributions to the evolution of Hadoop (namely: work-preserving preemption, and predictable resource allocation), and comment on the fascinating experience of working on open- source technologies from within Microsoft. The current Hadoop APIs (HDFS and YARN) provide the cluster equivalent of an OS API. With this as a backdrop, I will present our attempt to create the equivalent of stdlib for the cluster: the REEF project. Carlo A. Curino received a PhD from Politecnico di Milano, and spent two years as Post Doc Associate at CSAIL MIT leading the relational cloud project. He worked at Yahoo! Research as Research Scientist focusing on mobile/cloud platforms and entity deduplication at scale. Carlo is currently a Senior Scientist at Microsoft in the Cloud and Information Services Lab (CISL) where he is working on big-data platforms and cloud computing.

Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
