History of the Citadel ,[object Object]
Originally established as a rebellion and later “The Academy”
The first 20 cadets reported to Marion Square in 1843
In 1860, before SC succeeded from the Union, cadets fired cannons to prevent a steamer from reaching Fort Sumter with supplies.
It remained a military state supported college until 1995, which accepted only males to the Corps of Cadets ,[object Object]
“Core Values” Academics: We produce graduates who have insight into the issues, ideas and values that are important to society and possess the skills necessary to deal with them successfully. Duty: We emphasize the importance of individual accountability and the moral obligation of responsibility for the welfare of others. Honor: We adhere to a code which teaches that uncompromising personal integrity is the primary guide in all situations. "A cadet does not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those that do." Morality: We believe that an individual's character is of utmost importance and, therefore, we provide training which emphasizes ethical principles and core values. Discipline: We operate a leadership laboratory which emphasizes a structured environment, acceptance of responsibility, self-confidence and service to others. Diversity: We promote diversity in all segments of our campus community and college life.
Save the males… Shannon Faulkner was accepted in 1993 as an applicant to the Citadel. On her application, no gender was specified, and was accepted on merit alone. Jan. 1994 she enrolled in day classes  After legal battles won, she was allowed to enroll in the Corps of Cadets program. She joined an otherwise all-male class on August 15, 1995.
After only four hours of military indoctrination training, she spent the majority of the first week in the medical infirmary  due to medical issues and emotional distress. She left after one week after severe harrasment. Faulkner won her lengthy court battle and was allowed to enroll as a member of the Corps based on the 14th amendment.
Virginia Military Institute (VMI) June 1996 United States vs. Virginia Filed under the 14th amendment equal protection clause, “no state…shall deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” “ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL” Struck down VMI’s male-only admission policy in a 7-1 decision
Four more women enter Citadel, two women succeed Nancy Mace From Goose Creek (military family) Father is the most decorated, living Citadel Alumnus Entered in 1996 Transfer student from Trident Tech Became the first female cadet to graduate from The Citadel on May 8, 1999. Mace graduated in three years.
