"On the Road Again With Jesus"
Luke 24:13-35
Luke 24:13-16
On that same day, two disciples were traveling to a village called
Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking to
each other about everything that had happened. While they were
discussing these things, Jesus himself arrived and joined them on their
journey. They were prevented from recognizing him.
Jesus walks alongside of us in our times of grief, pain, and
confusion. Sometimes we fail to recognize His presence.
Jesus is always faithful to be present with us.
Luke 24:17-18
He said to them, "What are you talking about as you walk along?" They
stopped their faces downcast. The one named Cleopas replied,
"Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who is unaware of the things
that have taken place there over the last few days?"
Luke 24:25-27
Then Jesus said to them, "You foolish people! Your dull minds keep
2. you from believing all that the prophets talked about. Wasn't it
necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and then enter into his
glory?" Then he interpreted for them the things written about himself
in all the scriptures, starting with Moses and going through all the
Prophets.
Jesus calls us to know and believe the Word of God.
Jesus makes sense of all things. Through Him we learn what the
meaning of life is all about.
Luke 24:28-29
When they came to Emmaus, he acted as if he was going on ahead.
But they urged him, saying, "Stay with us. It's nearly evening, and the
day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them.
Jesus never forces His way into our lives. He allows us the choice ---
gives us the free will --- to accept Him or deny Him.
Luke 24:30-32
After he took his seat at the table with them, he took the bread,
blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Their eyes were opened
and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight. They
said to each other, "Weren't our hearts on fire when he spoke to us
along the road and when he explained the scriptures for us?"
For Personal or Group Reflection
1. How would you describe the spiritual and emotional state of
Cleopas and his fellow disciple before Jesus teaches them?
2. Why don't they seem to believe the women's report of Jesus'
resurrection? (24:22-24)
3. Why does Jesus rebuke them? Is his rebuke fair or warranted? Why
or why not? (24:25-26)
4. In what sense is Jesus revealed to us today in "the breaking of
bread"? (24:31, 35)
5. How have you recognized Jesus' presence in your daily life? In the
crisis times of your life?
6. How have you ignored or rejected Jesus' presence in your daily life?
