This graph illustrates how high efficiency fiber bed mist eliminators achieve high collection efficiencies on all particles. The vertical axis is collection efficiency and the horizontal axis is particle size. Note that as the particle size becomes smaller, the collection efficiencies due to interception decreases. However, as the particles become very small, their random motion increases, and the collection efficiency due to Browning diffusion increases. The combination of the Brownian and interception mechanisms for sub-micron (and impaction mechanism for particles above one micron), gives a high overall collection efficiency on all particle sizes. Note in most established applications we use “nominal” efficiencies for the sum total of particles less then three microns in size.
