An analysis of the music video:Jamie Lawson Wasn’t Expecting That
1. An analysis of the music
video
Jamie Lawson By Wasn’t Expecting That
2. Genre of the music video?
• I can tell that the song is from the Pop Genre because it has a mild pace
(not a fast pace like modern contemporary music for example Swedish
House Mafia). The video has scenes which are related to each and connect
with the narrative. The video had a storyline which is typical of pop music
videos where as some others don’t.
• Two visual elements that tell us the genre is the acting of the narrative and
the location used for the video.
• In this video we watch a husband reflect back over his life with his dying
wife, which moves us and we able to connect with the lyrics and the
narrative.
• In addition to this the location, is mostly in one setting, the home. Again
allowing us to form connection with the narrative this is typical of the pop
genre
3. Setting and décor of the music video.
• The video showed different stages of the main characters life. The
end to the beginning.
• Old styled chairs
• Stone floor porch with old fashioned tiles
• The carpets and curtains were very 60s
• The house was being decorated and newly painted but had previously
had wall paper
• Most of the music video is set in a house which set up as a family
home which seems happy from the scenes of the characters dancing,
making love and celebrating special events.
• Another one of the scenes is the garden. This could be use to change
the scenes which implies there are not that many unhappy memories
in the house. They also use a bright sunny garden to show happy
times shot towards the sky, we don’t see what happening below but
we see her getting younger and happy
• They also show a family room in the music video. As the shots move
backwards and forwards between the parents and the child. The
furniture and décor of the house changes to show the passage of
time
•
The director put all the different parts to the décor in the video to
show how it was different from past to the present to help the
audience see the passage of time.
• It fits in with the pop genre which originated in the 1950/60s and is
still here today and the video looks as though it is based around a
couple that met in the 1960s and their life leading up to the death in
the present day.
4. Analyse the costumes of the music videos
The costumes used in the video all fit with the pop genre and
the narrative of the song as it changes at various points from
modern day to 1950/60s. It showed modern day
shirts, jumpers and blouses with short hair styles.
Flowery dresses were used in the middle stages for the child
and mother with long hair with clips in them and Hippy
clothes with beaded jewellery were used to show the period
of the late 50’s and early 60’s.
A headscarf was used in the final scene to make the audience
aware that she has had chemotherapy and has lost her hair in
the fight against cancer. It explains why we have seen all
these different scenes in the video to emphasize the fact that
her life is flashing before her eyes before she dies.
The director changes the costumes to show the distressing
message to the audience of the main character approaching
death this helps to create a emotional from the audience
which make them feel sorry for the main character and the
situation they are in.
5. Analyse the props in the music video
The props used in the video all fit with the pop genre and the
narrative of the song as it changes at various points from
modern day to 1950/60s it showed a modern day car and a
food container. It also showed an old alarm clock and a old
fashioned camera and record player to show the 1950/60s.
Because of the video showing the end of the main characters
life at the beginning it would make any sense about the
birthday cake apart to show that she is getting older. If you
were to show the clips in the right order it could be used to
foreshadow her upcoming death. They also use moving box to
show that their child is leaving home this make us feel
empathy for the main characters.
A wedding ring shows the love and commitment between two
lovers the point of their rings being shown at various times in
the music video emphasizes this point. When the main
characters receives the letter we can see that it was bad by
the emotional response shown by the wife. This may also have
a emotional response which may make the audience feel sorry
for them.
At the end it shows a nurse turning off a modern day life
support machine which represents the end of the mothers life
as its being turned off to show that she is dead but the
modern equipment also shows that this is quite up to date.
6. Analyse the body language and movement in
the music video
• This is a love song and also a story of someone's
life. Most of the body language shows the love
between the couple except when they had the
argument on the stairs this also shows the more
frustrating sides of relationships.
• The speed of the camera shots in quite a few
scenes is in slow motion for example when the
little girl was jumping up and down and when
she was being swung around.
• The speed of the video helps to show all the
scenes to the audience so they wouldn't miss
anything as well as showing the mothers story is
a long and slow story and this adds to the overall
emotional response of the viewer.
• The director used a number of slower scenes and
intimate body language to also portray the
strong loving relationship that both main
character shares for each other.
7. Performance
• The artist doesn't perform in the video because Jamie Lawson appearing may
remove the connection between us and the couples story and would have
prevented the audience from easily understanding the whole story. This may also
be because the artist hasn't got anything to do with the relationship between the
two main characters in the music video because he is narrating by the use of him
singing his song.
8. Narrative
• It tells the audience that one little event could lead to the best life
you could possibly and if you don't take a chance it may end up
differently. The director chose to do this because it goes with the
words of the song as it shows the life of the main characters from the
end to when they first met as memories. It is typical of the genre
because the story is long and it has a lot of drama. This is shown in
the music video which links to the couples life which also links with
the lyrics of the song.
