THE HEART
Introduction:
The Heart is an amazing pump that works
nonstop, keeping the body alive. With
every beat, it sends a surge of bright red
blood, carrying vital supplies, such as
oxygen, and body’s waste products, such
as carbon dioxide, through a network of
blood vessels to and from every part of the
body .
Circulation
Your body
resembles a
large roadmap,
There are routes
or “arteries” that
take you
downtown to the
“heart” of the
city.
3 Major Parts of the
Circulatory system
• Blood Vessels - routes blood travels
• Heart – pumps or pushes blood through body
• Blood – carries important “oxygen, food, &
waste product” through body
2 Types of
Blood Vessels
Arteries Veins
Functions of Arteries & Veins
• ARTERIES: The arteries take
“Pure Blood” around the body
from heart.
They are Red in colour .
• Veins: Veins return the
“Impure Blood ” to heart from
body.
They are Blue in colour .
• 2 Interior of Heart
Contains:
• There 4 chambers of heart.
• 2 upper chambers : Left
Atrium
Right
Atrium
• 2 lower chambers : Left
Ventricle
Right
Ventricle
Blood Flow through the Human Body
Blood with little oxygen is pumped from the Right Atrium through a
valve to the Right Ventricle and through another valve into the
Pulmonary Vein. The Pulmonary Vein sends it to the Lungs to pick up
Oxygen. It’s sent from the Lungs through Pulmonary Arteries to the
Left Atrium through a valve to the Left Ventricle. The Left Ventricle
sends it through a valve to the Aorta. The Aorta is a series of branches
that sends oxygenated blood throughout the body.
Exterior Diagram
Of Heart
Nonstop Pump
The heart is a muscular pump
that works constantly to
squeeze blood into blood
vessels
called arteries. The arteries
take blood around the body,
and the veins return the
blood to heart.
The right pump
The heart is really pumps side by
side. The right pump sends blood
along the pulmonary arteries to
the lungs, where it absorbs
oxygen. This blood then come
back along the pulmonary veins
to the left side of heart to pumped
around the rest of the body.
The left pump
The left side of the heart is larger
and more powerful than the right
side. While the right side of the
heart pumps blood to the lungs,
the left side pumps blood all
around the body, delivering
oxygen, energy, and nutrients
from food to every part.
Then the blood, which is now low in
oxygen, returns from all of these
body parts along the veins to the
hearts right side. There it begins
it’s non stop journey back to the
lungs and then around the body
once again.
Lub
If you listen to
your heartbeat, it
makes a lub dub
sound.
The lub is when blood
is pushed out of the
heart into the body and
the dub is the reloading
of the heart with more
blood ready to push it
out to the body
Dub
The mechanical pump of a fountain uses force
to
squirt water a great distance.
Just as a fountain forces water out, just
heart muscle contacts to push blood at
great force into the arteries.
Your heart will do this about two-and-a-half
Billion times during your life.

Heart Facts
• During a typical day, the adult heart pumps out
about 2,000 gallons of blood. That would be
enough blood to fill more than 50 bath tubs.
• In a typical adult at rest, the heart pumps 70
times each minute and sends out about 1/3 cup
of blood with each beat.
• The heart pumps about 5 liters (approx.) , of
blood each minute , which is total volume of
blood in an adult body . When heart pumps
faster, it sends out 4times this amount.
Heart Facts
• Hold out your hand and make a fist. If you're a kid, your
heart is about the same size as your fist, and if you're an
adult, it's about the same size as two fists.
• Your heart beats about 100,000 times in one day and
about 35 million times in a year. During an average
lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion
times.
• With each pump, blood surges out into the main arteries
at a speed of 16 inches per seconds. If it were to pass
through a hole the size of a pinhead at this speed and
pressure, it would spurt more than 10 feet
THANK
YOU
