Presentation1 1 1
1. In 1992 Andrew Goodwin identified a number of key aspects featured in music videos. I will explore these aspects and review how well they compare with my own research and the music videos I have analysed.
2. We see this aspect particularly in Mystery Jets’ video for “Young Love”, where the visuals illustrate the lyrics. The lyrics are written on the screen as they are sung, enhancing the words and their desired meaning. This is repeated throughout this video and is effective both aesthetically and as a means of underlining the happenings of the song. “ Austere” by The Joy Formidable is an example of a music video in which there is no link between the lyrics and the visuals. The line in the song reads: “Puppets and gowns, a run side this town” whilst the band members are passing around a paper walrus which they have received from a pass the parcel. We could suggest that these two things are linked through abstractness but otherwise there seems to be no obvious relationship.
3. We see a relationship between the music and the visuals in Mystery Jets’ “Young Love” video. The music is upbeat and positive, and is teamed with a colourful background and colourful costumes. This shows a relationship between the two as they both hold a positive attitude and are both upbeat. We see this relationship in Florence’s video for “Dog Days.” The music for this track is staccato and so is fragmented and could be described as abstract. The visuals reflect this through the use of bright colours, ambiguous characters and abstract scenes.
4. Initially, this statement appears to be true of the music videos that I have researched. The styles of all the videos are different and unique. They all have separate locations- a forest, a drawn background, a garden, a studio. They all take a different outlook. However, they are all linked through abstractness and the idea of them being unique through the use of ambiguity, not often seen in other genres. Florence’s video is iconic through the use of masks/forest/colours and the track is staccato and upbeat. The Magic Number’s video is iconic through animation/performance and the music’s tempo varies widely. The Joy Formidable’s video is iconic through black and white images/parcels and the track is slower than the other videos. The Mystery Jet’s video is iconic through strong colours/instrumentals/fun attitude and the music is cheery and upbeat. This shows diversity within the genre.
5. This is evident in all of the videos that I researched. It is especially dominant in the Mystery Jets’ video for “Young Love” in which they advertise an uprising artist using a close up and her name written beside her so that she may be researched.
6. We don’t see this appearance of voyeurism in Florence’s video for “Dog Days.” Infact, the main artist is dressed conservatively in a suit and bow tie and there is no underlay of sexual connotation to her. We see this idea of screens within screens in The Magic Numbers’ video for “Forever Lost.” Images of the band are portrayed on a drawn screen, presenting the appearance of a screen within our screen.
7. We see intertextuality in the form of reference to other artists and videos. A separate artist appears in the Mystery Jets’ video for “Young Love” and reflects a video of her own, as part of the video for this track. We see intertextuality in The Magic Numbers’ video for “Forever Lost.” This is in the form of reference to another band. The video features a rat roaming the streets and in one shot a poster for “The Supremes” - an alternate band- is posted on the rat’s back.
