Heredity

• Definition: the transmission of genetic
characters from parents to offspring: it is
  dependent upon the segregation and
  recombination of genes
• Rating of Control:0
• Selling Point: Its more influential because we
have no control in what we inherit.
  dity?s=t
Research of Influence of Determinant
Example: Diseases
• Stat: Heredity influences the type of Diseases you are
  prone to
Citation: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_does_heredity_influence_a_person's_health
Example: Mental Illness
Stat: If a parent has bipolar disorder offspring might
  inherit it.
Citation: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090909125743AAmlVS6
Example: Cancer
• Stat: If a parent has the genes that are cancerous there
off spring may have a chance of developing cancer
Citation: http://www.foundationmedicine.com/patients-dna-cancer.php

Overview of Environment
• Definition: The surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or
  plant lives or operates.
• Rating of Control: 1.5: You can somewhat control the cleanliness of your
home, but especially as a teen, you cannot change where you live and the
climate/other conditions there. You have a lot more control over your
social life, but looking at the big picture, you can really only interact with
the people in your environment, of whom you cannot explicitly 'choose.'
• Selling Point: Your peers and family have the heaviest influence on your
personality as you grow and likewise your decision making. 'Friends' who
are drawn to drug use or dangerous sports/'adventures' will press their
ideas of fun on each other. Association with athletic or studious
individuals nearly always makes for a healthier lifestyle. Regarding
location, living in cities or other polluted areas can be detrimental to your
physical health, while living in areas of high elevation or near the sea can
strengthen/cleanse your lungs and sinuses, etc.
Research of Influence of Environment
Example: Stress at work
• Stat: The 2002 Aventis Healthcare Survey in Canada finds fifty-one percent of
employees experiencing much stress at work, with twenty-five percent of
them falling physically ill due to workplace stress.
Citation: http://www.brighthub.com/office/career-planning/articles/78690.aspx
Example:
Stat: People that live in a city live longer that people who live in a rural
area. Mortality rates in a metro area are substantially smaller and are
decreasing at a higher rate when compared to a non-metro area.
Citation: http://www.dailyyonder.com/tracing-rural-americas-mortality-penalty/2009/09/30/2368
Example:
• Stat: Inadequate, unhealthy, crowded, or too-costly housing can pose serious
problems for children's physical, psychological, and material well-being. In
2009, 45 percent of U.S. households with children had physically inadequate
housing, crowded housing, and/or a housing cost burden of more than 30
    percent of household income.

Overview of Media

• Media: Television, newspapers, and radio
collectively: the various means of mass communication
  considered as a whole, including
television, radio, magazines, and newspapers, together
with the people involved in their production
http://www.bing.com/Dictionary/search?q=define+media
&qpvt=definition+of+media&FORM=DTPDIA

• Rating of Control: 1.5 of 10
• Selling Point: Media is everywhere you can’t escape
it, there are commercials on TV and bill boards on the
streets and people see things and they’re influenced
Research of Influence of Media
Example: Music and Substance Abuse
•Stat: 1/3 of popular songs include refrences to substence abuse
Citation: http://health.usnews.com/usnews/health/healthday/071108/one-third-of-
    popular-songs-refer-to-substance-abuse.htm

Example: Television Food Adds and Obesity
Stat: Children who are able to recognize fast food adds are 17% more likely to be
    obese
Citation: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/04/120429085415.htm

Example: Media and Violence
•Stat: 80% of R-rated movies and 70% of Mature-rated video games are targeted at
    children under 17

Research of Influence of Determinant
Example: Rastafarians believe in a natural alternative
• Stat: they believe in modern medicine which doesn’t help
• Example: Rastafarian Culture
• Stat:
• Citation
• Example: Food
• Stat: McDonalds 14,000 U.S locations
• Citation http://ezlocal.com/blog/post/10-Largest-Fast-Food-Chains-in-the-US.aspx

• Example: Heart Diseases
• Stat: In 2009, African Americans were 30% more likely to die from heart disease, as
    compared to non-Hispanic white men.
• African American women are 1.6 times as likely as non-Hispanic whites to have
    high blood pressure.

Attitude

            Our Group
     Tech Hater= Dan O’Malley
     The Psychologist= Sam Lee
  The Tech Guru= Raman Mathur
The Research Specialist= Jessica Park
Overview of Attitude

• Definition: A manner, disposition, feeling, etc., with regard to a person or
thing; tendency or orientation, especially with the mind.
• Rating of Control: 7-8, because we can try to control our attitude by
thinking positive, but bad days are inevitable and natural. No one can
maintain a healthy attitude all the time.

• Selling Point: Attitude is more influential than other determinants
because it has a heavy influence on your mood. If you have a negative
attitude, even good things can be twisted to be upsetting. A negative
attitude emphasizes the bad things and results in much more stress. A
positive person who looks for the best in everything can look past the bad
stuff and tends to be much more relaxed, happy, and social as a result.
Research of Influence of Determinant
Example: pessimism affects health
• Stat:70% reported a decrease in their feelings of
  hurt
Citation
Example: anger releases stress
Stat:13% experienced reduced anger
Citation
Example: better attitude = better pain tolerance
• Stat:27% experienced fewer physical complaints
• Citation- http://takingcharge.csh.umn.edu/create-healthy-lifestyle/emotions-and-

Behavior

     The Psychologist= Brett
      The Tech Guru= Brett
The Research Specialist= Gergana
Overview of Behavior

• Definition: The way in which one acts or
  conducts oneself especially toward others
• Rating of Control: 10
• Selling Point: Behavior is doing, and
everything you do has an effect. Therefore
behavior is the most influential determinant
because there is total cognitive control
Research of Influence of Behavior
• Example: Eating
   – Stat: Every day about one quarter of the U.S. population eats fast food.
• Citation: http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-204_162-
  326858.html
• Example: Drinking
   – Stat: 54% of Americans consume from 1-7 alcoholic beverages on average every
     week
• Citation: http://www.gallup.com/poll/156770/majority-drink-
  alcohol-averaging-four-drinks-week.aspx
• Example: Smoking
   – Stat: Smoking-related diseases claim an estimated 443,000 American lives each
     year, including those affected indirectly
• Citation: http://www.lung.org/stop-smoking/about-
  smoking/facts-figures/general-smoking-facts.html
