5. The purpose of education has always been to everyone, in
essence, the same - to give the young, the things they need in
order to develop in an orderly, sequential way into members of
society. Any education is, in its forms and methods, an outgrowth
of the needs of the society in which it exists.
Education is essential for every society and individual. It is
life itself but not preparation for life. Man has various qualities.
These qualities of the individual should be developed for the
improvement of society. So education plays a complementary role
in overall individual, social and national development. It enables an
individual to realize his highest self and goal

6. KEY TERMS…
• EDUCATION - Education is both the act of teaching knowledge to
others and the act of receiving knowledge from someone else.
Education also refers to the knowledge received through
schooling or instruction and the institution of teaching.
• SOCIETY- A society is a group of individuals involved in
persistent social interaction, or a large social group sharing
the same spatial or social territory, typically subject to the
same political authority and dominant cultural expectations.
• INDIVIDUAL - Individuals are beings who do take on
individual responsibilities in their everyday social roles and
risk social consequences when they fail to live up to them.

7. FUNCTIONS OF EDUCATION TOWARDS INDIVIDUAL:
• Development of inborn potentialities- Education helps the
child to develop the inborn potentialities of the child providing
scope to develop.
• Modifying behavior- Education helps to modify past
behavior through learning and through different agencies of
education.
• All-round development- Education aims at the all-round
development of child-physical, mental, social, emotional, and
spiritual.

8. Functions of education towards individual…
• Preparing for the future- After completion of education, the child can
earn a livelihood by getting the proper education, which has
productivity. Education should be imparted according to the own
interest of the child.
• Developing personality- The whole personality of the child is
developed physically, intellectually, morally, socially, aesthetically, and
spiritually. He has recognized society.
• Helping for adjustability- Man differs from the beast. Man has
reasoning and thinking power. Man tries his best to adjust to his own
environment through education.

• Social change and control
• Reconstruction of experiences
• Development of social and moral value
• Providing opportunity or equality

respects from what it was fifty years ago.
• Politically independent Population
• Growing middle class
• Increasing number of professionals
• Different means of communication and transportation
• Public and private schools, colleges, and universities
• Various industries have grown
• Most of our degree courses are patterned abroad without an adequate
local study basis.

• Curriculum developers must have in mind that the problem of society
is the problem of education.
• Industry needs to indicate the direction and dimension of educational
progress for manpower development.
• Education must enrich society, improve the living conditions of its
people and make possible its optimum development.

• The curriculum must keep up with the changing political, economic,
and social conditions of the country.
• Education is the best social leveler. They say that it is the very answer
to poverty, corruption, hate, and ignorance.
• The literacy rate in the Philippines has regressed a lot over the last ten
years.

• Analysis of society and culture, of tradition and heritage, social pressures,
and established social habits.
• Analysis of culture and society thus provides some guidelines for
determining the main objectives of the curriculum, for the selection of
content, and for deciding what the stress is in learning activities.
• Diagnosing the gaps, deficiencies, and variations of the backgrounds of
development is an important step in determining what the curriculum
should be.

Development
• The task of selecting and organizing learning experiences in curriculum
development must take into consideration the culture of society.
• Society’s concept of the function of the school determines to a great extent
what kind of curriculum schools will have.

Be democratic concerning the procedure
Accept individual differences
