INTRODUCTION1
Computer Assisted Learning describes an educational environment where a computer program, or an
application as they are commonly known, is used to assist the user in learning a particular subject. The key issue
is the word assist which means that the program is not alone in this aim and that there are other methods
involved. CAL refers to an overall integrative approach of instructional methods and is actually part of the
bigger picture. When used in this context CAL describes an integrated approach to teaching a subject in which
learning technology forms a part and which only comes about after re-assessment of the current teaching
methods.
This is Computer Aided Learning - in that the computer, being a program of some sort, is an aid to an overall
learning strategy – which in itself is a conglomeration of other methods of instruction, (e.g. the lecture, tutorial
sheets, text books etc.). So CAL is not a single computer program but art of an educational strategy devised to
teach a particular subject. The relative part each method of instruction plays within the strategy is determined
through the re-evaluation of the subject being taught. Re-evaluation examines the educational objectives of the
subject and their associated learning outcomes and determines the success with which the current methods of
teaching and assessment are achieving them in terms of knowledge gained.
Thus re-evaluation helps to determine the areas or objectives of the subject in which the traditional methods are
failing and where the computer program can help. Furthermore re- evaluation determines the level at which the
program operates – the educational objectives which the program alone cannot teach and thus the level of
required support from the other methods. Thus re-evaluation results in a coherent educational strategy within
which each instructional method compliments and supports the other ensuring that no area of the subject is
overlooked.

CAL has often been used to describe the development and application of educational technology for a variety of
circumstances. From the mid 1980s until the early 1990s the term CAL was often used to refer to the
development of either a single computer program or a series of programs which replaced the more traditional
methods of instruction, in particular the lecture.
 "Computer Assisted Learning or Computer Aided Learning is defined as
learning through computers with subject wise learning packages/materials" ....Mifflin. A
 Computer Aided Learning (CAL) or Computer Assisted learning can be defined as learning or teaching
subjects like mathematics, Science, Geography, and etc., through computers with subject wise learning
packages/materials.
• It may include all types of Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL), where technology is used to support
the learning process.
• It is said to be: "Pedagogy empowered by digital technology".
• In broader sense, it may be considered as a part of E-Learning
HISTORY OF COMPUTER ASSISTED LEARNING2
Computer assisted learning is not a new phenomenon. Computer Assisted Learning can be defined as a
computer program or file developed specifically for educational purposes. The technique used throughout the
world in a variety of contexts, from Primary school to University. In the 1980s, the first computer assisted
learning became available to University students. The CAL Idea is highly dependent to the following
educational events:
• Education Commission (1964-66), called Kothari Commission: Introduction of Vocational Courses.
• National Policy of Education (1968): Introduction of Correspondence Courses.
• Edger Dale: Cone of Learning, Cone of Experience (Audio-Visual Methods in Teaching, 3rd ed. New York,
1969).
• Jacques Delors: The Four Pillars of Education, 1996(Learning to be, Learning to Do, Learning to Know,
Learning to Live Together)
TYPES OF SOFTWARE USED IN CAL 3
I] Drill and Practice
 Drill and practice software is generally used the same way that worksheets or flash cards are used in
classrooms. It provides repeated exposure to facts or information, often in a question or game-type
format. Ex: Math Munchers, Reader Rabbit, Accelerated Reader
 Drill and practice software was the most prevalent type of computer application for many years, since
teachers were not quite sure how else computers could be used. Drill and practice software also fit nicely
into a behavioral approach to teaching and learning since it measured student performance.
 Drill and practice software deals primarily with lower-order thinking skills.
 Drill and practice applications do not utilize the full power of computers. However, many drill and
practice software titles are very good at what they do. The computer does not get tired of providing
students with the practice and feedback they need.
 Most drill and practice programs also have a tracking device so that students (and teachers) are aware of
their progress. In addition, many of the drill and practice programs have sounds and other motivating
characteristics that encourage students and the students can progress at their own rate while using the
software.
II] Tutorial
 Tutorial software presents concepts or skills and then gives students the opportunity to practice them as
compared to Drill and practice software which does not include a teaching component.
 Tutorials may be linear (students must go from p. 1 to p. 2 and so on) or non-linear (where they can
branch off in one of several directions based on interest or need). Older software is more likely to be
linear in nature.
 Tutorials are often very interactive. Students do not just passively sit and read computer screens, some
tutorials capitalize on individualized instruction and adjust the pace and feedback based on the students’
progress.
 Students who are absent or who need remediation can often benefit from using a computerized tutorial;
provided one is available that covers what was missed.
 EX: Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, Type to Learn, Reader Rabbit's Learn to Read
III] Problem Solving
 Problem solving software allows learners to see the results of their reactions to various events. Learners
manipulate variables, and feedback is provided based on these manipulations.
 Problem solving software does not necessarily utilize realistic scenarios. For example, in the Carmen
San Diego series, the student flies around the world getting clues to try to track down a criminal. The
process is contrived, although students develop problem solving skills and learn geography at the same
time.
 There is a lot of power to using problem solving applications in the classroom, provided they match the
curriculum. It is sometimes otherwise difficult to provide feedback based on individual choices students
without the computer.
 EX: Carmen San Diego, the Factory, National Inspirer, Thinking Things, Shape Up
IV] Simulation
 A simulation is a representation or model of a real event, object, or phenomenon where learners can see
the results of their actions. Sometimes it is not practical or feasible to do the real thing, so a simulation is
used to provide experiences that otherwise would be denied. The difference between simulation software
and problem solving software is that simulation software deals with realistic situations.
 This is a very powerful application of computers and the educational community can capitalize on this
type of software. Students are given the power to manipulate aspects of models or situations. They see
the results of their decisions immediately.
 Simulation and problem solving software address higher-order thinking skills.
 One element to be aware of when using simulation and problem solving software is that sometimes tests
do not reflect what students learn through their involvement with these packages. As we start to use
software that addresses higher-order thinking skills, we also need to consider alternative forms of
assessment that can help us to better evaluate what students know and understand.

V] Tool Software
 Tool software is the most prevalent computer application used in education right now. It encompasses
all software that can be used as a tool for student learning. The software itself is not the focus, but rather
the student is using it to help them express their thoughts and show their understanding. As a result, tool
software is not tied to a specific grade or content area. Tool software helps students and teachers to
manage information. The use of tool software in the curriculum is only as effective as the activity that
the teacher develops.
 Word processors, desktop publishing packages, spreadsheets, data bases, graphics programs,
telecommunications software, and multimedia software are samples of tool software.
 Tool software is cost effective because it can be purchased for a wide range of grade levels and content
areas. Both students and teachers can use the software.
 EX: Inspiration, Neighborhood Map Machine, Print Shop
VI] Computer Programming
 This used to be a big category of computer use in the schools, but the emphasis on programming skills
has decreased significantly. Many schools no longer even offer programming classes, but instead are
teaching students to use multimedia and other computer tools. EX: Logo, BASIC, Pascal
 Logo is still taught, especially for its value in helping students understand mathematics. It is a
programming language that is not used outside of education.
FEATURES OF CAL4
Computer programmers have been able to create computer-assisted-learning programs that
have served to increase student learning by affecting cognitive processes and increasing
motivation. Current research shows the mechanisms by which computer programs facilitate this learning are:
(1) Personalizing information
Personalizing information allows computer-assisted-instruction to increase learner interest in
the given tasks (Padma and Ross, 1987) and increase the internal logic and organization of the material
(Anderson, 1984; Ausubel, 1968; Mayer,1975).
(2) animating objects on the screen
The animation of objects involved in the explanation of a particular concept, for example,Newton's First
Law of Motion, increases learning by decreasing the cognitive load on the
learner's memory thereby allowing the learner to perform search and recognition processes and
to make more informational relationships (Reiber, 1991).
(3) Providing practice activities that incorporate challenges and curiosity
Computer-assisted-instruction increases motivation by providing a context for the learner that is
challenging and stimulates curiosity (Malone, 1982). Activities that are intrinsically motivating
also carry other significant advantages such as personal satisfaction, challenge, relevance, and
promotion of a positive perspective on lifelong leaning (Keller and Suzuki, 1988; Kinzie, 1990).
(4) Providing a fantasy context
A fantasy context increases learning by facilitating engagement (Parker and Lepper, 1992;
Malone, 1982). Fein (1981) and Signer (1987) have also found, apart from using computer
programs, the involvement in fantasy is often highly intrinsically motivating.
(5) Providing a learner with choice over his/her own learning
Providing students with choice over their own learning provides leaner-controlled instruction,
which contributes to motivation. Increased motivation in turn increases student learning (Kinzie,
Sullivan and Berdel, 1988).
ADVANTAGES OF THE CAL5
1. CAL is individualized, that is each student is free to work at his own place, totally unaffected by the
performance of any other students.
2. Information is presented in a structured form. It proves useful in the study of a subject where there is
hierarchy of facts and rules.
3. CAL forces active participation on the part of the student, which contrasts with the more passive role in
reading a book or attending a lecture.
4. CAL utilizes a reporting system that provides the student with a clear picture of his progress. Thus students
can identify the subject areas in which they have improved and in which they need improvement.
5. By enabling students to manipulate concepts directly and explore the results of such manipulation, it reduces
the time taken to comprehend difficult concepts.
6. CAL offers a wide range of experiences that are otherwise not available to the student. It works as
multimedia providing audio as well as visual inputs. It enables the student to understand concepts clearly with
the use of stimulating techniques such as animation, blinking, graphical displays etc.
7. CAL provides a lot of drilling which can prove useful for low aptitude students.
8. CAL can enhance reasoning and decision-making abilities.
DISADVANTAGES OF CAL5
1. A CAL package may be regarded simply as a novelty, rather than an integral part of the educational process.
2. Though simulation permits execution of chemical and biological experiments, hands-on experience is
missing. Moreover, CAL packages cannot develop manual skills such as handling an apparatus, working with a
machine etc.
3. There are real costs associated with the development of CAL systems. It is expensive in terms of staff time to
devise and programme effective CAL.
4. Content covered by a certain CAL package may become outdated. A very high cost is involved in the
development of these packages. If the course is outdated, the resources involved in its development will be a
waste.
5. CAL packages may not fulfill expectations of teachers. Objectives and methods decided by the CAL author
and of a teacher may differ.
6. Motivating and training teachers to make use of computers in education is a challenging task. They may have
fear of this new device. They may be unwilling to spend extra time for preparation, selection and use of CAL
packages. It may also be perceived as a threat to their job.
7. There are administrative problems associated with computer installation. The problems particularly related to
the physical location of the computer resources, the cost of hardware maintenance and insurance and time-
tabling.
8. The rapid development of hardware makes it difficult to select a system before it becomes obsolete. If a new
system is installed by a maximum number of institutions, they may not get courseware required for the system
and courseware developed so far may become useless.
COMPUTER-ASSISTED LEARNING (CAL) FOR NURSING EDUCATION6
CAL has been claimed to improve knowledge retention and achievement scores, enhance clinical judgment
skills and reduce required instruction time; performing as well (if not better) when compared to other more
traditional education techniques. The advantages of the utilization of CAL in nursing education can be made
clear by consideration of adult education theory and curriculum design, as well as the particular learning needs
of nurses themselves. Research and development into a theoretical framework for CAL design and
implementation has allowed the identification of beneficial aspects of CAL resources. Although the cost of
commercial software may be prohibitive to some institutions, possibilities exist for educators to create their own
CAL packages relatively simply.
BARRIERS TO ADOPTION OF CAL7
In relation to nursing education, Valish and Boyd (1975) stated that many nursing institutions do not examine
their curricula and go on with the “business as usual” in spite of changing technology and demands for
alternatives in procedures.
According to a statement by Murphy (1977), “the view that the computer is probably suitable for administrative
work and not a valid instructional medium, is still a status quo.”
Others have attempted to identify potential hindering factors to computer use in nursing education ( Collart,
1973; Frantz, 1967; Levine & wiener, 1975; Porter, 1978). Four pertinent factors are enlisted below:
1. Lack of availability of courseware.( i.e. hardware and software)
2. Lack of compatibility
3. Resistance of faculty
4. High costs
CAL VS CONVENTIONAL CLASSROOM8
CAL is particularly useful for independent, self managed learning. Students using a computer can take the
material at their own pace, referring back to previous sections as and when they deem necessary. They can
answer the questions posed by the program in a total privacy, without being embarrassed of lack of knowledge
in front of a group of peers.
The great advantage of CAL over the conventional method is its high quality instructions that eliminate
variables such as poor preparation and presentation by the teacher, problems of timing, fatigue, boredom, and
loss of attention.
Claims about the advantages of CAL over conventional classroom teaching are summarized by Hartley (1998):
1. Learning is individualized and self paced
2. Feedback on student responses are instant
3. Programmes have undergone rigorous testing
COMPUTER AIDED LEARNING PROGRAM9
The Azim Premji Foundation began the Computer Aided Learning Program (CALP) in 2001. This was in
response to the feedback received from parents in rural Karnataka that they would like their children to speak
English and learn computers. This intervention took the form of computer centers in 35 schools of Karnataka.
These computer centers were called Community Learning Centers and were run by a person, called the Young
India Fellow (YIF). This initiative began as a three-way partnership with a willing head-teacher of a rural
government school; with the community, providing basic infrastructure (room, electric cabling etc.) and the
Azim Premji Foundation, providing the infrastructure that was needed for the program (computer, furniture and
salary of persons involved). There was also a provision, for usage of the computer for revenue generation
purposes, by the community, during the evening hours According to the post audit report and a study done in
2002, CALP was yielding positive results.
The Azim Premji Foundation partnership with the government started in 2003 with 55 CAL centers being set up
in 11 districts of Karnataka, with the Government providing the computers and Azim Premji Foundation
providing the necessary support for implementation. An off-school model was also started in 2004 whereby a
school goes to a computer centre called the E-Seva Kendra. In Karnataka the CAL centers were run by the YIF,
while in Andhra Pradesh a teacher was responsible for bringing the children to the centers. It was observed that
the teachers had unconsciously, started connecting CDs with their lessons. In the last six years, the program has
evolved and grown into a Teacher Assisted Computer Based Learning Program for Children and is being
implemented in 15 States/Union territories. Over the years the Azim Premji Foundation team has collected a lot
of information and received feedback about the program.
The anecdotal evidence available with Azim Premji Foundation suggests that the CALP has positively impacted
attendance, enrolment, and community involvement and teacher motivation. It has also contributed in the
improvement of non-cognitive skills among children. In 2006, it was felt that five years of CALP was a
reasonable time to systematically look back at the program, take stock and draw lessons for the future. An
extensive research study was planned to comprehensively look at the achievements and constraints for CALP in
four selected states– Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttarakhand with assistance from external
experts. This research was expected to provide a sound understanding of the implementation of the program and
generate case studies that would help Azim Premji Foundation in determining factors that have been responsible
for maximizing the positive impact of the program, and in taking policy decisions related to various dimensions
of CALP.

INTRODUCTION1 Computer Assisted Learning describes an educational environment where a computer program, or an application as they are commonly known, is used to assist the user in learning a particular subject. The key issue is the word assist which means that the program is not alone in this aim and that there are other methods involved. CAL refers to an overall integrative approach of instructional methods and is actually part of the bigger picture. When used in this context CAL describes an integrated approach to teaching a subject in which learning technology forms a part and which only comes about after re-assessment of the current teaching methods. This is Computer Aided Learning - in that the computer, being a program of some sort, is an aid to an overall learning strategy – which in itself is a conglomeration of other methods of instruction, (e.g. the lecture, tutorial sheets, text books etc.). So CAL is not a single computer program but art of an educational strategy devised to teach a particular subject. The relative part each method of instruction plays within the strategy is determined through the re-evaluation of the subject being taught. Re-evaluation examines the educational objectives of the subject and their associated learning outcomes and determines the success with which the current methods of teaching and assessment are achieving them in terms of knowledge gained. Thus re-evaluation helps to determine the areas or objectives of the subject in which the traditional methods are failing and where the computer program can help. Furthermore re- evaluation determines the level at which the program operates – the educational objectives which the program alone cannot teach and thus the level of required support from the other methods. Thus re-evaluation results in a coherent educational strategy within which each instructional method compliments and supports the other ensuring that no area of the subject is overlooked. DEFINITION1, 2 CAL has often been used to describe the development and application of educational technology for a variety of circumstances. From the mid 1980s until the early 1990s the term CAL was often used to refer to the development of either a single computer program or a series of programs which replaced the more traditional methods of instruction, in particular the lecture.  "Computer Assisted Learning or Computer Aided Learning is defined as learning through computers with subject wise learning packages/materials" ....Mifflin. A  Computer Aided Learning (CAL) or Computer Assisted learning can be defined as learning or teaching subjects like mathematics, Science, Geography, and etc., through computers with subject wise learning packages/materials. • It may include all types of Technology-Enhanced Learning (TEL), where technology is used to support the learning process. • It is said to be: "Pedagogy empowered by digital technology". • In broader sense, it may be considered as a part of E-Learning HISTORY OF COMPUTER ASSISTED LEARNING2 Computer assisted learning is not a new phenomenon. Computer Assisted Learning can be defined as a computer program or file developed specifically for educational purposes. The technique used throughout the world in a variety of contexts, from Primary school to University. In the 1980s, the first computer assisted

The CAL Idea is highly dependent to the following educational events: • Education Commission (1964-66), called Kothari Commission: Introduction of Vocational Courses. • National Policy of Education (1968): Introduction of Correspondence Courses. • Edger Dale: Cone of Learning, Cone of Experience (Audio-Visual Methods in Teaching, 3rd ed. New York, 1969). • Jacques Delors: The Four Pillars of Education, 1996(Learning to be, Learning to Do, Learning to Know, Learning to Live Together) TYPES OF SOFTWARE USED IN CAL 3 I] Drill and Practice  Drill and practice software is generally used the same way that worksheets or flash cards are used in classrooms. It provides repeated exposure to facts or information, often in a question or game-type format. Ex: Math Munchers, Reader Rabbit, Accelerated Reader  Drill and practice software was the most prevalent type of computer application for many years, since teachers were not quite sure how else computers could be used. Drill and practice software also fit nicely into a behavioral approach to teaching and learning since it measured student performance.  Drill and practice software deals primarily with lower-order thinking skills.  Drill and practice applications do not utilize the full power of computers. However, many drill and practice software titles are very good at what they do. The computer does not get tired of providing students with the practice and feedback they need.  Most drill and practice programs also have a tracking device so that students (and teachers) are aware of their progress. In addition, many of the drill and practice programs have sounds and other motivating characteristics that encourage students and the students can progress at their own rate while using the software. II] Tutorial  Tutorial software presents concepts or skills and then gives students the opportunity to practice them as compared to Drill and practice software which does not include a teaching component.  Tutorials may be linear (students must go from p. 1 to p. 2 and so on) or non-linear (where they can branch off in one of several directions based on interest or need). Older software is more likely to be linear in nature.  Tutorials are often very interactive. Students do not just passively sit and read computer screens, some tutorials capitalize on individualized instruction and adjust the pace and feedback based on the students’ progress.  Students who are absent or who need remediation can often benefit from using a computerized tutorial; provided one is available that covers what was missed.  EX: Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, Type to Learn, Reader Rabbit's Learn to Read III] Problem Solving  Problem solving software allows learners to see the results of their reactions to various events. Learners manipulate variables, and feedback is provided based on these manipulations.
  • 4.  Problem solving software does not necessarily utilize realistic scenarios. For example, in the Carmen San Diego series, the student flies around the world getting clues to try to track down a criminal. The process is contrived, although students develop problem solving skills and learn geography at the same time.  There is a lot of power to using problem solving applications in the classroom, provided they match the curriculum. It is sometimes otherwise difficult to provide feedback based on individual choices students without the computer.  EX: Carmen San Diego, the Factory, National Inspirer, Thinking Things, Shape Up IV] Simulation  A simulation is a representation or model of a real event, object, or phenomenon where learners can see the results of their actions. Sometimes it is not practical or feasible to do the real thing, so a simulation is used to provide experiences that otherwise would be denied. The difference between simulation software and problem solving software is that simulation software deals with realistic situations.  This is a very powerful application of computers and the educational community can capitalize on this type of software. Students are given the power to manipulate aspects of models or situations. They see the results of their decisions immediately.  Simulation and problem solving software address higher-order thinking skills.  One element to be aware of when using simulation and problem solving software is that sometimes tests do not reflect what students learn through their involvement with these packages. As we start to use software that addresses higher-order thinking skills, we also need to consider alternative forms of assessment that can help us to better evaluate what students know and understand.  Hot Dog Stand, Oregon Trail, Virtual Labs-Electricity V] Tool Software  Tool software is the most prevalent computer application used in education right now. It encompasses all software that can be used as a tool for student learning. The software itself is not the focus, but rather the student is using it to help them express their thoughts and show their understanding. As a result, tool software is not tied to a specific grade or content area. Tool software helps students and teachers to manage information. The use of tool software in the curriculum is only as effective as the activity that the teacher develops.  Word processors, desktop publishing packages, spreadsheets, data bases, graphics programs, telecommunications software, and multimedia software are samples of tool software.  Tool software is cost effective because it can be purchased for a wide range of grade levels and content areas. Both students and teachers can use the software.  EX: Inspiration, Neighborhood Map Machine, Print Shop VI] Computer Programming  This used to be a big category of computer use in the schools, but the emphasis on programming skills has decreased significantly. Many schools no longer even offer programming classes, but instead are teaching students to use multimedia and other computer tools. EX: Logo, BASIC, Pascal  Logo is still taught, especially for its value in helping students understand mathematics. It is a programming language that is not used outside of education.

FEATURES OF CAL4 Computer programmers have been able to create computer-assisted-learning programs that have served to increase student learning by affecting cognitive processes and increasing motivation. Current research shows the mechanisms by which computer programs facilitate this learning are: (1) Personalizing information Personalizing information allows computer-assisted-instruction to increase learner interest in the given tasks (Padma and Ross, 1987) and increase the internal logic and organization of the material (Anderson, 1984; Ausubel, 1968; Mayer,1975). (2) animating objects on the screen The animation of objects involved in the explanation of a particular concept, for example,Newton's First Law of Motion, increases learning by decreasing the cognitive load on the learner's memory thereby allowing the learner to perform search and recognition processes and to make more informational relationships (Reiber, 1991). (3) Providing practice activities that incorporate challenges and curiosity Computer-assisted-instruction increases motivation by providing a context for the learner that is challenging and stimulates curiosity (Malone, 1982). Activities that are intrinsically motivating also carry other significant advantages such as personal satisfaction, challenge, relevance, and promotion of a positive perspective on lifelong leaning (Keller and Suzuki, 1988; Kinzie, 1990). (4) Providing a fantasy context A fantasy context increases learning by facilitating engagement (Parker and Lepper, 1992; Malone, 1982). Fein (1981) and Signer (1987) have also found, apart from using computer programs, the involvement in fantasy is often highly intrinsically motivating. (5) Providing a learner with choice over his/her own learning Providing students with choice over their own learning provides leaner-controlled instruction, which contributes to motivation. Increased motivation in turn increases student learning (Kinzie, Sullivan and Berdel, 1988). ADVANTAGES OF THE CAL5 1. CAL is individualized, that is each student is free to work at his own place, totally unaffected by the performance of any other students. 2. Information is presented in a structured form. It proves useful in the study of a subject where there is hierarchy of facts and rules. 3. CAL forces active participation on the part of the student, which contrasts with the more passive role in reading a book or attending a lecture. 4. CAL utilizes a reporting system that provides the student with a clear picture of his progress. Thus students can identify the subject areas in which they have improved and in which they need improvement.
  • 6. 5. By enabling students to manipulate concepts directly and explore the results of such manipulation, it reduces the time taken to comprehend difficult concepts. 6. CAL offers a wide range of experiences that are otherwise not available to the student. It works as multimedia providing audio as well as visual inputs. It enables the student to understand concepts clearly with the use of stimulating techniques such as animation, blinking, graphical displays etc. 7. CAL provides a lot of drilling which can prove useful for low aptitude students. 8. CAL can enhance reasoning and decision-making abilities. DISADVANTAGES OF CAL5 1. A CAL package may be regarded simply as a novelty, rather than an integral part of the educational process. 2. Though simulation permits execution of chemical and biological experiments, hands-on experience is missing. Moreover, CAL packages cannot develop manual skills such as handling an apparatus, working with a machine etc. 3. There are real costs associated with the development of CAL systems. It is expensive in terms of staff time to devise and programme effective CAL. 4. Content covered by a certain CAL package may become outdated. A very high cost is involved in the development of these packages. If the course is outdated, the resources involved in its development will be a waste. 5. CAL packages may not fulfill expectations of teachers. Objectives and methods decided by the CAL author and of a teacher may differ. 6. Motivating and training teachers to make use of computers in education is a challenging task. They may have fear of this new device. They may be unwilling to spend extra time for preparation, selection and use of CAL packages. It may also be perceived as a threat to their job. 7. There are administrative problems associated with computer installation. The problems particularly related to the physical location of the computer resources, the cost of hardware maintenance and insurance and time- tabling. 8. The rapid development of hardware makes it difficult to select a system before it becomes obsolete. If a new system is installed by a maximum number of institutions, they may not get courseware required for the system and courseware developed so far may become useless. COMPUTER-ASSISTED LEARNING (CAL) FOR NURSING EDUCATION6 CAL has been claimed to improve knowledge retention and achievement scores, enhance clinical judgment skills and reduce required instruction time; performing as well (if not better) when compared to other more traditional education techniques. The advantages of the utilization of CAL in nursing education can be made clear by consideration of adult education theory and curriculum design, as well as the particular learning needs
  • 7. of nurses themselves. Research and development into a theoretical framework for CAL design and implementation has allowed the identification of beneficial aspects of CAL resources. Although the cost of commercial software may be prohibitive to some institutions, possibilities exist for educators to create their own CAL packages relatively simply. BARRIERS TO ADOPTION OF CAL7 In relation to nursing education, Valish and Boyd (1975) stated that many nursing institutions do not examine their curricula and go on with the “business as usual” in spite of changing technology and demands for alternatives in procedures. According to a statement by Murphy (1977), “the view that the computer is probably suitable for administrative work and not a valid instructional medium, is still a status quo.” Others have attempted to identify potential hindering factors to computer use in nursing education ( Collart, 1973; Frantz, 1967; Levine & wiener, 1975; Porter, 1978). Four pertinent factors are enlisted below: 1. Lack of availability of courseware.( i.e. hardware and software) 2. Lack of compatibility 3. Resistance of faculty 4. High costs CAL VS CONVENTIONAL CLASSROOM8 CAL is particularly useful for independent, self managed learning. Students using a computer can take the material at their own pace, referring back to previous sections as and when they deem necessary. They can answer the questions posed by the program in a total privacy, without being embarrassed of lack of knowledge in front of a group of peers. The great advantage of CAL over the conventional method is its high quality instructions that eliminate variables such as poor preparation and presentation by the teacher, problems of timing, fatigue, boredom, and loss of attention. Claims about the advantages of CAL over conventional classroom teaching are summarized by Hartley (1998): 1. Learning is individualized and self paced 2. Feedback on student responses are instant 3. Programmes have undergone rigorous testing COMPUTER AIDED LEARNING PROGRAM9 The Azim Premji Foundation began the Computer Aided Learning Program (CALP) in 2001. This was in response to the feedback received from parents in rural Karnataka that they would like their children to speak English and learn computers. This intervention took the form of computer centers in 35 schools of Karnataka. These computer centers were called Community Learning Centers and were run by a person, called the Young India Fellow (YIF). This initiative began as a three-way partnership with a willing head-teacher of a rural government school; with the community, providing basic infrastructure (room, electric cabling etc.) and the Azim Premji Foundation, providing the infrastructure that was needed for the program (computer, furniture and salary of persons involved). There was also a provision, for usage of the computer for revenue generation
  • 8. purposes, by the community, during the evening hours According to the post audit report and a study done in 2002, CALP was yielding positive results. The Azim Premji Foundation partnership with the government started in 2003 with 55 CAL centers being set up in 11 districts of Karnataka, with the Government providing the computers and Azim Premji Foundation providing the necessary support for implementation. An off-school model was also started in 2004 whereby a school goes to a computer centre called the E-Seva Kendra. In Karnataka the CAL centers were run by the YIF, while in Andhra Pradesh a teacher was responsible for bringing the children to the centers. It was observed that the teachers had unconsciously, started connecting CDs with their lessons. In the last six years, the program has evolved and grown into a Teacher Assisted Computer Based Learning Program for Children and is being implemented in 15 States/Union territories. Over the years the Azim Premji Foundation team has collected a lot of information and received feedback about the program. The anecdotal evidence available with Azim Premji Foundation suggests that the CALP has positively impacted attendance, enrolment, and community involvement and teacher motivation. It has also contributed in the improvement of non-cognitive skills among children. In 2006, it was felt that five years of CALP was a reasonable time to systematically look back at the program, take stock and draw lessons for the future. An extensive research study was planned to comprehensively look at the achievements and constraints for CALP in four selected states– Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttarakhand with assistance from external experts. This research was expected to provide a sound understanding of the implementation of the program and generate case studies that would help Azim Premji Foundation in determining factors that have been responsible for maximizing the positive impact of the program, and in taking policy decisions related to various dimensions of CALP.
