- The past 5 years have clearly demonstrated that indeed, APIs were the fuel of business transformation. And it is not at an API conference that I am going to say the opposite ! It is the glue between all the innovations that create data, uses data, analyze data. API is the conduit for bringing all this together and making sure your new application can deliver value to your clients by delivering a superior client experience or simply by delivering new business models
- Of course we haven’t waited for APIs to bring data to applications, to deliver near real time data to an application, or even innovate. What is new now is that new needs emerge everyday, and since the smart phone revolution every user expects unparallel service at the palm of his hand. The key is therefore not so much to be able to bring data and application together, but it is to be able to do it fast – to respond to a business need – and to be able to do it over and over again. Being agile !
- But it is tough these days. We never produced so much data in the history of mankind, and all this data have never been so fragmented and unstructured. We are therefore facing a double issue : the need to be agile to provide data to new business needs, and to do this where it has never been so challenging to bring all these applications together.
- What you need is to be agile, and make sure you build what your client need. The what ? It is the data required to fuel your business idea. Your client ? Your client is the developer who is building the application that will transform your business idea/need into reality. The only way to bring together those 2 imperatives of speed and pertinence, is to iterate. It is essential to consider your API as a product that you are going to put to market, advertise, socialize, monitor and release new versions based on usage and feedback.
- As you can guess now, the use cases are endless. Nevertheless we can easily group them in 4 categories, from the simpler to the most transformative ones.
- Lets do now some window shopping. Because indeed the best way to find out about APIs is to go to the developer portals and understand what is available. One interesting item developed by EDP is the communities they built around their APIs, facilitating communication between developers, feedback on the APIs, mutual help and so on.
