Many organisations are interested in adopting DevOps culture and practices but quite often they face some serious challenges after starting a DevOps transformation programme. These problems can be mitigated if organisations are well prepared for what’s likely to happen when their existing processes and culture are being altered during the DevOps transformation effort. This talk aims to explore the common problem areas that can impact the success of the DevOps transformation, and will provide practical advice for dealing with these based on experiences from our past engagements. It will offer some insight into how organisations can prepare and manage the transformation programme, track and report the progress, and finally, ensure that the desired business outcomes are achieved.

During the past decade, the adoption of agile has grown incredibly. But the dependence of businesses and society on software has increased even more. Software is eating the world. The survival and prosperity of many people and organizations depend on software. Complexity and unpredictability continue to increase. Yet, many organizations are stuck with old thinking like productivity, performance and blindly pushing more requirements out to the market. The focus of managing has not shifted to, like was a core intent of the agile movement, optimizing the VALUE that the software brings to the organization. The urgency to do so grows. The agile values and spirit are more needed than ever, but it's time to include management in the empirical thinking. Gunther Verheyen directs the Professional Series at Scrum.org and is a partner of Ken Schwaber, Scrum co-creator. Gunther and Ken have developed a view on management in an agile context, "Evidence-Based Management" (EBM). EBM has its roots in medical practice and promotes evidence-based decision-making in the managerial domain of software. In his keynote presentation at Scrum Day Europe 2014, Gunther looked at the state of agile through the lens of EBM, and introduce how to apply its principles in a context of software. If no evidence is collected on the value of software, informed management decisions to maximize it cannot be made. Software development deserves a professional way of managing, a way of managing that is more than mere intuition, opinion and position.

The Western Union shared-service Enterprise IT Operations team took a grass roots approach, starting small and measurable. The team used deployment automation as a foundational technology and as a lever to open the door for broader conversations with its dev partners. This talk is about the agile adoption journey applied to transition a 40+ members team working on multiple projects. Agile adoption is not about bringing in a new process; instead it is more about defining or rather redefining the organizational culture. One of the biggest challenges that any organization will encounter while it is embracing their agile journey is changing mindset. There are many inherent problems with most organizations which need to be tackled during agile adoption. The main reason for high failure rate is because; change-agents talk of adopting agile and not about transforming the organizational culture to support its agile journey. The sad consequence is mainly due to the fact that change-agents undertaking organizational transformation do not have a proper buy-in or understanding of organizational consequences. Based on experience with various teams, we have defined a framework to address this. This framework focuses on individuals, helping team transformation impacting its organizational culture. To enable the team through agile adoption, I propose six step approach. Evaluate: Conduct agile adoption evaluation and identify gaps Gap analysis: Analyze gaps and derive ways on how to bridge the gaps Propose: Propose and align various agile approaches that suites the team Define: Define plan, adoption approach and road map Pilot: Deploy pilot projects as part of agile transition Extend: Extend across organization

People everywhere are talking about scaling agile and different frameworks and ideas to support this. Fancy and rather complicated scaling agile frameworks have not only taken shape but probably have started becoming mainstream. All these frameworks apparently claim to facilitate communication and collaboration. However, as group size rises, all sorts of issues emerges. Even if more people provide a greater pool of resources, they also require greater amounts of coordination and management, to the point where size becomes an impediment. Scaling up might trigger not only “coordination loss” & “motivation loss” but also “relational loss”. Small teams are agile!! I guess, thats the reason Scrum urges to work in small teams. As small as 5 to 9 members. So let’s explore if there is a possibility to scale down instead of scaling up? And, how can you scale down? What does it take? Has anyone scaled down yet? Is there a structure to scale down? Can it be replicated?

Many development teams have adopted agile frameworks to improve their ability to deliver software. This has led to a local optimization for the development teams and they have become good at delivering potentially shippable increments of their products, but from there, they typically see organizational constraints in moving it to the customer. The development organization is quickly adding features to the queue waiting to be released, but the operations teams are struggling to support fires in production, maintain stability, and provide the environments and infrastructure needed so development teams can move their new functionality forward. The operation team’s focus on stability usually minimizes the number of changes in production thus creating infrequent, large batches being deployed at a planned date. Can Agile and DevOps bring the development and operations teams together to remove the organizational constraints in moving the software to the customer? In this session, we’ll talk about the relationship of Agile and DevOps, not as an intersection, but as a progression of capability with development and operation teams working together to remove those constraints. We’ll discuss how using Agile and DevOps practices together, teams can release value faster, with higher quality, and in more stable environments making it safer to deploy.
