“Playing for Change” es un movimiento multimedia creado para inspirar, conectar y
llevar la paz al mundo a través de la música. La idea de este proyecto surgió de la
creencia común de que la música tiene el poder para derribar las fronteras y superar
las distancias entre las personas. No importa si la gente viene de diferentes orígenes
geográficos, políticos, económicos, espirituales o ideológicos, la música tiene el poder
universal para trascender y nos une como una sola raza humana. Y con esta verdad
firmemente en nuestras mentes, nos dispusimos a compartir con el mundo.
The Inspiration
Playing for Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring
peace to the world through music. The idea for this project arose from a common belief
that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between
people. No matter whether people come from different geographic, political, economic,
spiritual or ideological backgrounds, music has the universal power to transcend and
unite us as one human race. And with this truth firmly fixed in our minds, we set out to
share it with the world.

3. Inicio del Proyecto
El proyecto inició en 2004 con el objetivo de “inspirar, conectar y traer paz al mundo a
través de la música”. Los creadores del proyecto, Mark Johnson y Enzo Buono, viajaron
por todo el mundo, estuvieron en Nueva Orleans, Barcelona, Sudáfrica, India, Nepal, el
Medio Oriente e Irlanda. Usando equipo de grabación portátil, el dúo hizo las grabaciones
de varios músicos en diferentes países, cantando la misma canción, pero interpretándola
en su propio estilo.
Entre los artistas participantes o involucrados en el inicio del proyecto, estuvieron: Vusi
Mahlasela, Louis Mhlanga, Clarence Bekker, Tal Ben Ari (Tula), Bono, Keb Mo, David
Broza, Manu Chao y Grandpa Elliott.
Project Start Up
The project started in 2004 with the organization's self-described goal to "inspire, connect,
and bring peace to the world through music". The creators of the project, Mark Johnson
and Enzo Buono, traveled around the world to places including New Orleans, Barcelona,
South Africa, India, Nepal, the Middle East and Ireland. Using mobile recording
equipment, the duo recorded local musicians performing the same song, interpreted in
their own style.
Among the artists participating or openly involved in the project are Vusi Mahlasela, Louis
Mhlanga, Clarence Bekker, Tal Ben Ari (Tula), Bono, Keb Mo, David Broza, Manu Chao
and Grandpa Elliott.

4. La Producción
Hemos construido un estudio de grabación móvil, equipado con todo el mismo equipo
que utilizan los mejores estudios, este equipo viajó con nosotros, a donde la música
nos llevó. Como la tecnología cambia, nuestro consumo de energía se redujo de usar
baterías de carro de golf a usar baterías de automóviles y finalmente, a las
computadoras portátiles. Del mismo modo, la calidad con la que hemos podido filmar y
documentar el proyecto, ha mejorado gradualmente desde una variedad de formatos,
cada uno el mejor de su tiempo, hasta finalmente lograr Súper Alta Definición (full HD).
The Production
We built a mobile recording studio, equipped with all the same equipment used in the
best studios, and traveled to wherever the music took us. As technology changed, our
power demands were downsized from golf cart batteries to car batteries, and finally to
laptops. Similarly, the quality with which we were able to film and document the project
was gradually upgraded from a variety of formats, each the best we could attain at the
time, and finally to full HD.

5. Una cosa que nunca cambió durante todo el proceso fue nuestro compromiso de crear un
entorno para los músicos en el que podían crear libremente y que no puso barreras entre
ellos y los que finalmente iban a disfrutar de su música.
Liderando con esa energía y la intención viajamos por todas partes, nos dieron acceso
libre a los músicos y los lugares que suelen ser inaccesibles. En este sentido, la
inspiración que en un principio nos puso en este camino se convirtió en co-creadora del
proyecto junto con nosotros!
One thing that never changed throughout the process was our commitment to create an
environment for the musicians in which they could create freely and that placed no
barriers between them and those who would eventually experience their music.
By leading with that energy and intent everywhere we traveled, we were freely given
access to musicians and locations that are usually inaccessible. In this respect, the
inspiration that originally set us on this path became a co-creator of the project along with
us!

6. El Efecto
En el transcurso de este proyecto, decidimos que no era suficiente para nuestro equipo
sólo grabar y compartir esta música con el mundo, hemos querido crear una forma de
retribuir a los músicos y sus comunidades que habían compartido tanto con nosotros.
Y así, en 2007 se creó la “Fundación Playing for Change”, una organización
independiente no lucrativa cuya misión es hacer precisamente eso, incluyendo la
construcción de escuelas de música para niños en todo el mundo.
The Effect
Over the course of this project, we decided it was not enough for our crew just to
record and share this music with the world; we wanted to create a way to give back to
the musicians and their communities, that had shared so much with us.
And so in 2007 we created the Playing for Change Foundation, a separate nonprofit
corporation whose mission is to do just that, including building music schools for
children around the world.

7. A principios de 2008, se estableció “Timeless Media”, una entidad con fines de lucro
para financiar y ampliar el trabajo de “Playing for Change”.
Más tarde, en ese mismo año, Timeless Media formó una empresa conjunta con el
Grupo Concord Music, con el apoyo del co-propietario del sello grabador y leyenda del
entretenimiento, Norman Lear y el Vicepresidente de Artistas y Repertorio del grupo
Concord Music, John Burk.

In early 2008, we established Timeless Media, a for-profit entity that funds and extends
the work of Playing for Change.
Later that year, Timeless Media entered into a joint venture with the Concord Music
Group through the support of label co-owner and entertainment legend Norman Lear
and Concord Music Group executive vice president of Artists & Repertoire (A&R) John
Burk.
Our goal is to bring PFC’s music, videos and message to the widest possible audience.

8. Ahora, los músicos de todo el mundo se reúnen para realizar conciertos a beneficio que
construir escuelas de música y arte en las comunidades que están en necesidad de
inspiración y esperanza. Además de beneficiar a los conciertos, la banda Playing for

Now, musicians from all over the world are brought together to perform benefit concerts
that build music and art schools in communities that are in need of inspiration and hope.
In addition to benefit concerts, the Playing for Change band also performs shows around
the world. When audiences see and hear musicians who have traveled thousands of
miles from their homes, united in purpose and chorus on one stage, everyone is touched
by music's unifying power.
