RELEVANT EXPERIENCE
Epidemiological Investigation and Research
• Conducted and supervised Investigation of 11 outbreaks in Punjab-Pakistan and 8 outbreaks in Saudi
Arabia considered to be critical by provincial or national governments. Latest outbreak investigations
included cluster of MERS CoV cases in Taif region, Saudi Arabia (September to November 2014), in
collaboration with US-CDC; and Diphtheria outbreak in Makkah city (2012)
• Participated as Consultant Epidemiologist in a number of collaborative studies, funded by various
Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations, in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia focusing on issues
related to epidemiological and health management aspects of Public Health (list of funded projects given
below). Many of these project involved working in multi-disciplinary teams. My contribution in these
projects usually spanned from proposal development, supervision of data collection and entry, data
analysis, report writing and presentation. In most of these projects also acted as research coordinator.
• Supervised over 100 research projects of postgraduate students of Field Epidemiology and Public
Health at Diploma, Masters and Fellowship levels covering different aspects of public health including
disease and risk factor surveillance, health system evaluation, KAP regarding health behaviors. The
activity cover guiding and supervising trainees from the step of generation of research question, through
proposal development, data collection, analysis, report writing, presentation of study findings and project
evaluation.

Surveillance
• Participated in designing and development of national Influenza H1N1 surveillance database and
reporting system of Saudi Arabia (2009), which is still being used with minor updates.
• Planned and supervised conversion of 15 years (1993-2008) of published grouped data of notifiable
communicable diseases of Sad Arabia into line-list style population based dataset for surveillance training
of Diploma in Field Epidemiology residents (Total records more than 1 million). Dataset is accompanied by
an epidemiological analysis and reporting module.
• Participated in analyzing and writing annual Health Management information System report (1998-99) of
Punjab Province – Pakistan.
• Review and analysis of surveillance data as part of outbreak investigations.
• Conducted a number of evaluations of surveillance system and data as MOH assignments or study
projects e.g. Suitability of National MERS CoV database of Saudi Arabia for statistical analysis and
OpenData publishing (2014), Appraisal of Measles elimination indicators in Qassim Region 2010-11, Role
of timing of vaccination in measles outbreak in Tathleeth region, Saudi Arabia, 2007
Data Management and Analysis
• Proficient in using SPSS (since 1994), Epi Info (since 1990) and MS Excel (since 2000) for data
management and analysis. Have some experience in using Stata and EpiData.
• Skillful in managing and analyzing large health datasets in line with program/study objectives covering
univariate and multivariate analysis, while choosing and applying appropriate statistical procedures and
tests; followed by interpretation and reporting of findings.
• Conducted 6 courses for “Analyzing epidemiological data using SPSS” since 2009.
• Analyzed a large number of datasets of surveillance system and research projects starting the process
with development of data collection instruments, developing data entry modules with appropriate quality
checks, data entry (although it has become rare in recent years), development of data analysis plans,
managing data to prepare it for data analysis, developing syntax files for data analysis, and report
production. These projects ranged from descriptive studies to cohort/case-control studies, number of
variables sometimes went beyond the routine capacities of Epi Info and SPSS and had to be manipulated
by circumventions, and number of records went beyond 30,000.
• Provided guidance and supervision for data management and analysis of over 100 research projects of
postgraduate field epidemiology and community medicine / public health trainees.
Disease Control and Prevention
• Provincial level Program Management of Communicable Disease Control in Punjab (pop. 74 million)
mainly focusing on Malaria, Tuberculosis, AIDS, Hepatitis, Diarrhoeal Diseases while emphasizing on
Disease Surveillance System.
• Developed plans for the expansion of Malaria, TB, AIDS control programs and Nutrition program in
Punjab, Pakistan
• Supervision and Monitoring of a number of Sub National Immunization days (for Polio eradication)
while acting as District Supervisor/Team leader of Divisional monitoring team in Pakistan
Teaching and Training
• 20 years of experience in teaching Epidemiology, Research Methodology, Infectious and Chronic
Disease Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Data analysis at postgraduate level (Diploma in Field
Epidemiology, Saudi Board in Community Medicine, Fellowship in Community Medicine/Public Health,

FUNDED RESEARCH (Participated as Epidemiologist and at times also as Research Coordinator)
 Case-control study to assess potential risk factors related to human illness caused by Middle
East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) – A multinational study under WHOs
guidance. Saudi component of the project was funded by Saudi Ministry of Health.
 Evaluation of infection prevention and control program at hospitals of Ministry of Health in
Saudi Arabia (2013-14) – A national study included 56 randomly selected hospitals. Project was
funded by Saudi Ministry of Health.
 Epidemiology of N. meningitidis carriage in Hajj 2012: Study was conducted to estimate the N.
meningitidis carriage rate among pilgrims from countries with high and low endemicity on arrival and
departure from Jeddah airport. Sample 3600. Project was funded by Saudi Ministry of Health
 National Non-Communicable Disease risk factors survey – Saudi Arabia (2003-2005). A cross
sectional survey conducted using World Health Organisation’s STEPS approach for NCD
surveillance covering the core and extended components of all the Steps 1-3, while including around
5,000 participants aged 15-64 years, from all across the country, using multistage stage stratified
random sampling technique to assess current status of some non-communicable diseases and their
risk factors, in the country. Project was funded by Saudi Ministry of Health.
 Global Health Professional (Smoking) Survey (2002-03) – Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional
survey of 3,000 physicians sampled by multistage stratified random cluster sampling technique
across whole of the country, to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices of physicians regarding
smoking. The project was partially funded by World Health Organisation.
 EPI Coverage Survey: A cross sectional study conducted in year 2001 to ascertain the district wise
EPI coverage with reasons for incomplete vaccination in all the 78 districts of 3 Provinces of
Pakistan, by using 30 cluster sampling technique covering over 16,000 children 12-23 months of age
and mothers of over 16,000 children 0-11 months of age. The financial support for the study was
provided by the UNICEF.
 Prevalence of Arsenicosis due to Ingestion of Arsenic through Drinking Water: An
Epidemiological Survey was conducted in 3 Districts of Punjab in year 2001 involving dermatological
examination of over 20,000 people, semi-quantitative field testing of 4000 water samples for
presence of Arsenic, quantitative assessment of 10% of water sample at a reference laboratory and
assessment of arsenic in 400 biological samples (nails). The financial support for the study was
provided by the UNICEF.
 School based IDD Prevalence and Community Based Iodised Salt consumption KAP survey.
A cross sectional study conducted in years 2000-2001 in three districts of Punjab involving
estimation of iodine excretion in urine samples of 1800 school going children aged 8-9 years and a
community based iodised salt consumption KAP survey with on-the-spot testing of salt for iodine
content involving 450 households. The financial support for the study was provided by the UNICEF.
 Training need assessment of EPI Field Workers in Punjab. A cross sectional study conducted in
4 districts of Punjab involving 400 Vaccinators and CDC supervisors in year 2000. The financial
support for the study was provided by the UNICEF.
 Assessment of Effectiveness of a Total Quality Management (TQM) Model for Primary Health
Care and Development of Policy Implications. An intervention trial conducted in two Tehsils of
Punjab during years 1997-99. Financial support for the project was provided by Pakistan Medical
Research Council.

Latest outbreak investigations included cluster of MERS CoV cases in Taif region, Saudi Arabia (September to November 2014), in collaboration with US-CDC; and Diphtheria outbreak in Makkah city (2012) • Participated as Consultant Epidemiologist in a number of collaborative studies, funded by various Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations, in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia focusing on issues related to epidemiological and health management aspects of Public Health (list of funded projects given below). Many of these project involved working in multi-disciplinary teams. My contribution in these projects usually spanned from proposal development, supervision of data collection and entry, data analysis, report writing and presentation. In most of these projects also acted as research coordinator. • Supervised over 100 research projects of postgraduate students of Field Epidemiology and Public Health at Diploma, Masters and Fellowship levels covering different aspects of public health including disease and risk factor surveillance, health system evaluation, KAP regarding health behaviors. The activity cover guiding and supervising trainees from the step of generation of research question, through proposal development, data collection, analysis, report writing, presentation of study findings and project evaluation.
  • 2. 2 Surveillance • Participated in designing and development of national Influenza H1N1 surveillance database and reporting system of Saudi Arabia (2009), which is still being used with minor updates. • Planned and supervised conversion of 15 years (1993-2008) of published grouped data of notifiable communicable diseases of Sad Arabia into line-list style population based dataset for surveillance training of Diploma in Field Epidemiology residents (Total records more than 1 million). Dataset is accompanied by an epidemiological analysis and reporting module. • Participated in analyzing and writing annual Health Management information System report (1998-99) of Punjab Province – Pakistan. • Review and analysis of surveillance data as part of outbreak investigations. • Conducted a number of evaluations of surveillance system and data as MOH assignments or study projects e.g. Suitability of National MERS CoV database of Saudi Arabia for statistical analysis and OpenData publishing (2014), Appraisal of Measles elimination indicators in Qassim Region 2010-11, Role of timing of vaccination in measles outbreak in Tathleeth region, Saudi Arabia, 2007 Data Management and Analysis • Proficient in using SPSS (since 1994), Epi Info (since 1990) and MS Excel (since 2000) for data management and analysis. Have some experience in using Stata and EpiData. • Skillful in managing and analyzing large health datasets in line with program/study objectives covering univariate and multivariate analysis, while choosing and applying appropriate statistical procedures and tests; followed by interpretation and reporting of findings. • Conducted 6 courses for “Analyzing epidemiological data using SPSS” since 2009. • Analyzed a large number of datasets of surveillance system and research projects starting the process with development of data collection instruments, developing data entry modules with appropriate quality checks, data entry (although it has become rare in recent years), development of data analysis plans, managing data to prepare it for data analysis, developing syntax files for data analysis, and report production. These projects ranged from descriptive studies to cohort/case-control studies, number of variables sometimes went beyond the routine capacities of Epi Info and SPSS and had to be manipulated by circumventions, and number of records went beyond 30,000. • Provided guidance and supervision for data management and analysis of over 100 research projects of postgraduate field epidemiology and community medicine / public health trainees. Saudi component of the project was funded by Saudi Ministry of Health.  Evaluation of infection prevention and control program at hospitals of Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia (2013-14) – A national study included 56 randomly selected hospitals. Project was funded by Saudi Ministry of Health.  Epidemiology of N. meningitidis carriage in Hajj 2012: Study was conducted to estimate the N. meningitidis carriage rate among pilgrims from countries with high and low endemicity on arrival and departure from Jeddah airport. Sample 3600. Project was funded by Saudi Ministry of Health  National Non-Communicable Disease risk factors survey – Saudi Arabia (2003-2005). A cross sectional survey conducted using World Health Organisation’s STEPS approach for NCD surveillance covering the core and extended components of all the Steps 1-3, while including around 5,000 participants aged 15-64 years, from all across the country, using multistage stage stratified random sampling technique to assess current status of some non-communicable diseases and their risk factors, in the country. Project was funded by Saudi Ministry of Health.  Global Health Professional (Smoking) Survey (2002-03) – Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional survey of 3,000 physicians sampled by multistage stratified random cluster sampling technique across whole of the country, to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices of physicians regarding smoking. The project was partially funded by World Health Organisation.  EPI Coverage Survey: A cross sectional study conducted in year 2001 to ascertain the district wise EPI coverage with reasons for incomplete vaccination in all the 78 districts of 3 Provinces of Pakistan, by using 30 cluster sampling technique covering over 16,000 children 12-23 months of age and mothers of over 16,000 children 0-11 months of age. The financial support for the study was provided by the UNICEF.  Prevalence of Arsenicosis due to Ingestion of Arsenic through Drinking Water: An Epidemiological Survey was conducted in 3 Districts of Punjab in year 2001 involving dermatological examination of over 20,000 people, semi-quantitative field testing of 4000 water samples for presence of Arsenic, quantitative assessment of 10% of water sample at a reference laboratory and assessment of arsenic in 400 biological samples (nails). The financial support for the study was provided by the UNICEF.  School based IDD Prevalence and Community Based Iodised Salt consumption KAP survey. A cross sectional study conducted in years 2000-2001 in three districts of Punjab involving estimation of iodine excretion in urine samples of 1800 school going children aged 8-9 years and a community based iodised salt consumption KAP survey with on-the-spot testing of salt for iodine content involving 450 households. The financial support for the study was provided by the UNICEF.  Training need assessment of EPI Field Workers in Punjab. A cross sectional study conducted in 4 districts of Punjab involving 400 Vaccinators and CDC supervisors in year 2000. The financial support for the study was provided by the UNICEF.  Assessment of Effectiveness of a Total Quality Management (TQM) Model for Primary Health Care and Development of Policy Implications.
