There are also several apartment
buildings close to the College for
students who choose to make their
own arrangements.
Homestay
Homestay with a Canadian family is
a great choice for new international
students. The college carefully
selects host families to provide
a safe, comfortable and friendly
environment. Students are matched
with hosts based on student requests
on the Homestay Application Form. In
homestay, students can:
•	 be part of a Canadian family
•	 meet Canadian friends
•	 learn about life in Canada and
Canadian culture
•	 receive help and support
•	 enjoy unique activities with the
homestay host
•	 learn English more quickly by
practicing it at home
Homestay includes:
•	 a private furnished bedroom
with bedding
•	 all meals and snacks eaten in
the home and a bag lunch on
school days
•	 access to TV and free laundry
facilities
•	 FREE airport pick-up from
Cranbrook Airport
•	 only one or two international
students per home
•	 if two students, must be from
different home countries to
promote English use
Students pay host families directly in
advance each month.

12 months of the year. The residence
is a great place to meet Canadian col-
lege students and enjoy campus life.
Features of the residence include:

classrooms
•	 clean, secure and modern building
located beside the community forest
•	 apartment “pod” style – each
pod contains six bedrooms, two
bathrooms, one kitchen and one
living room
•	 common lounges for all residents
includes TVs, vending machines
and fireplace
•	 coin laundry facilities
•	 cable TV, telephone and internet
access available in each room for
an additional monthly fee
•	 live-in Residence Advisors to assist
students and provide social activities
•	 free pick-up from Cranbrook Airport
Students living in residence are
expected to:
•	 purchase and prepare their own
meals in the kitchen or purchase
meals from the college cafeteria
on weekdays (large grocery stores
are within walking distance of the
campus)
•	 provide their own bedding, dishes
and cookware – these items can
be cheaply purchased at local
department stores
•	 share in cleaning duties with
other residents

College of the Rockies’ admission process is easy… just follow these steps:
1.	Complete the on-line application form at http://www.cotr.bc.ca/internl/apply.htm
2.	Pay Cdn$100 non-refundable tuition deposit by international bank draft, bank transfer or credit card. You will
receive a message by e-mail to confirm receipt of your application and provide detailed payment instructions.
3.	If accepted, you will be sent an official letter of acceptance after we receive both the tuition deposit and
application for admission. At the time of acceptance, students are admitted to College programs generally, but not to
specific courses. All admissions are subject to students arriving before semester deadlines. Students must be at least 18
years old to attend.
4.	Apply for a Canada Study Permit at a Canadian Embassy if you plan to study for more than six months; No study
permit is required for study less than six months. The official letter of acceptance must be included in your study
permit application. You should make the study permit application at least three months before the start of classes to
allow for study permit processing. Information on the study permit process can be viewed at http://www.cic.gc.ca
5.	Pay the remainder of your tuition fees when you arrive at the College. Registration in individual classes cannot
be completed until semester tuition and student fees are paid in full. Financial aid and scholarships are not available
for international students.
NOTE: All registrations are subject to the student’s level of English competency, possession of course prerequisites, and the availability of specific programs, courses and sections.
Application and Admission Process
If English is not your first
language, the College
offers Conditional and
Unconditional acceptance
for academic programs:
UNCONDITIONAL acceptance allows
students to proceed to a full load of
four to six academic courses per semes-
ter. An English Language Assessment
is not needed. Requirements are:
•	 TOEFL score of at least 550, or
•	 CBT 213, or
•	 iBT 80, or
•	 IELTS 6, or
•	 English 12/90 in Canada, or
•	 completion of College of the
Rockies English Language Training
Students with CONDITIONAL accept-
ance must complete our English
Language Assessment before registra-
tion in academic courses. Test results
will determine if a student must take
the English Language Training (ESL)
program, or can proceed directly to a
full academic program.
•	 ESL students may take one to three
academic courses per semester with
their English program, depending
on their English level. There is
no extra tuition fee for these
academic courses.
•	 NO TOEFL score is required for
students who complete the English

English Language Training (ESL)

Students from all over the
world attend College of the
Rockies’ English Language
Training (ESL) program.
This program is for students:
•	 preparing for academic programs
in Canada and/or
•	 improving communication skills
•	 minimum age 18 years old; mature
students welcome
The program is designed to improve
all language areas:
•	 listening
•	 speaking
•	 communication/conversation
•	 pronunciation
•	 reading
•	 writing
•	 vocabulary
The ESL schedule consists of:
•	 15–22 hours per week of classes
depending on level
•	 mornings and afternoons, five
days per week, Monday–Friday
All classes are interactive and include
cultural information.
Levels are available for all
language abilities:
•	 multiple levels of ESL
•	 students are placed in the
appropriate level after completion
of the English Language Assessment
•	 approximately four months to
complete a level
•	 during the fall and winter
semesters, students in the
top three levels of the English
Language Training program may
take one to three academic
courses with Canadian students
for audit or credit (number of
courses allowed depends on level)
•	 during the spring and summer
semesters, three or four levels are
offered
•	 students who complete all levels
of the ESL program may take
university level English courses
offered at the College; university
level English courses are required
for all undergraduate degree
programs in Canada
•	 short-term students are welcome
to attend any semester for a
minimum of six weeks

The Business Administration Program
is designed for students interested in
pursuing either the:
•	 Certificate – 10 courses at COTR
•	 Diploma – 20 courses at COTR
•	 Bachelors Degree after transfer to
university
The first year (10 courses) covers the
basic knowledge in the core areas of
business and is accepted for credit
by all the major universities includ-
ing UBC. A Business Administration
certificate is awarded on completion
of the first year. Second year courses
allow students to attain recognized
qualification in specialized areas such
as accounting, general management,
and marketing.
A Business Administration diploma
graduate receives two years of credit
towards a Bachelor of Business
Administration, Management or
Commerce Degree at these institutions:

The ABT certificate program provides
office, business, and technical skills
training in a self-paced modular format
with individualized instruction. New
students may enter the program on
the first Monday of any month from
September to May if space is available.
A mix of computer, bookkeeping, and
business communications courses give
students a general knowledge of office
work. After completing core courses,
students may continue their training
in one or more of the majors:

BUSINESS OPERATIONS

This 10 month program provides
academic and practical training in the
business of adventure tourism. Course
work provides students with the busi-
ness skills required in nature-based
tourism businesses. The program
consists of classroom study, lab work,
field trip experiences, and culminates
with a six week practicum allowing
students to apply their knowledge
and skills on the job while working
alongside a practicing professional.
Through exposure to existing adven-
ture tourism businesses, students not
only cover the industry standards, but

also acceptable levels of performance
and safety procedures in the field.
The program includes the latest
industry-developed training material,
including these BC provincially-
endorsed programs’ standards:
•	 Adventure Tourism BC Standards
and Certification for the Tourism

for students interested in pursuing:

Recreation Management graduates are
well positioned for career paths in
public recreation services, recreation
facility administration and leisure
services within the tourism industry.
Event Management students will gain

EARLY CHILDHOOD
EDUCATION

This 10 month program offers a var-
iety of learning activities including
lectures, group discussions, individual
and group assignments, seminars,
field trips and a community practicum
placement. Completion of a program
in Early Childhood Education from
COTR is the first step in becoming
a Certified Early Childhood Educator
in BC. Students who complete the
certificate program can continue for
one more semester to obtain an Early
Childhood Education diploma with
specializations in Infant/Toddler or
Special Needs.
PROFESSIONAL COOK TRAINING

COTR offers the three levels of the
provincial Professional Cook Training
program, providing practical experi-
ence in a fully-equipped training
kitchen and formal dining room.
Practical instruction includes soups,
sauces, meat and fish cookery, vege-
tables, desserts, pastry, cold kitchen,
and meat cutting. Graduates can find
excellent opportunities in all areas of
the food service industry.

What is a community college? A community college is a public post- secondary educational institution that offers both career programs and university courses. In a college: • most programs are one or two years • classes are small and interactive • instructors are highly qualified and dedicated to student success • program quality is high due to government regulations • tuition fees are very reasonable • students receive extra support • most students are local Canadians • in the BC college system, students can easily transfer to universities in Canada and receive credit for many college courses and programs. Students can choose either • homestay with a Canadian host OR • on-campus housing at our dormitory/residence (www.cotr.bc.ca/residence) There are also several apartment buildings close to the College for students who choose to make their own arrangements. Homestay Homestay with a Canadian family is a great choice for new international students. The college carefully selects host families to provide a safe, comfortable and friendly environment. Students are matched with hosts based on student requests on the Homestay Application Form. In homestay, students can: • be part of a Canadian family • meet Canadian friends • learn about life in Canada and Canadian culture • receive help and support • enjoy unique activities with the homestay host • learn English more quickly by practicing it at home Homestay includes: • a private furnished bedroom with bedding • all meals and snacks eaten in the home and a bag lunch on school days • access to TV and free laundry facilities • FREE airport pick-up from Cranbrook Airport • only one or two international students per home • if two students, must be from different home countries to promote English use Students pay host families directly in advance each month.   • 7. • NO homestay application fee • two weeks notice is required to withdraw from homestay or change locations • students can change homestays for no extra fee if they are not satisfied • homestays are located within easy walking distance of a public transit bus stop Purcell House student residence on-campus The student residence welcomes Canadian and international students 12 months of the year. The residence is a great place to meet Canadian col- lege students and enjoy campus life. Features of the residence include: • all PRIVATE, SINGLE furnished bedrooms • convenient three minute walk to classrooms • clean, secure and modern building located beside the community forest • apartment “pod” style – each pod contains six bedrooms, two bathrooms, one kitchen and one living room • common lounges for all residents includes TVs, vending machines and fireplace • coin laundry facilities • cable TV, telephone and internet access available in each room for an additional monthly fee • live-in Residence Advisors to assist students and provide social activities • free pick-up from Cranbrook Airport Students living in residence are expected to: • purchase and prepare their own meals in the kitchen or purchase meals from the college cafeteria on weekdays (large grocery stores are within walking distance of the campus) • provide their own bedding, dishes and cookware – these items can be cheaply purchased at local department stores • share in cleaning duties with other residents Applications can be submitted on-line at http://www.cotr.bc.ca/residence/ application.htm
  • 8. www.cotr.bc.ca College of the Rockies’ admission process is easy… just follow these steps: 1. Complete the on-line application form at http://www.cotr.bc.ca/internl/apply.htm 2. Pay Cdn$100 non-refundable tuition deposit by international bank draft, bank transfer or credit card. You will receive a message by e-mail to confirm receipt of your application and provide detailed payment instructions. 3. If accepted, you will be sent an official letter of acceptance after we receive both the tuition deposit and application for admission. At the time of acceptance, students are admitted to College programs generally, but not to specific courses. All admissions are subject to students arriving before semester deadlines. Students must be at least 18 years old to attend. 4. Apply for a Canada Study Permit at a Canadian Embassy if you plan to study for more than six months; No study permit is required for study less than six months. The official letter of acceptance must be included in your study permit application. You should make the study permit application at least three months before the start of classes to allow for study permit processing. Information on the study permit process can be viewed at http://www.cic.gc.ca 5. Pay the remainder of your tuition fees when you arrive at the College. Registration in individual classes cannot be completed until semester tuition and student fees are paid in full. Financial aid and scholarships are not available for international students. NOTE: All registrations are subject to the student’s level of English competency, possession of course prerequisites, and the availability of specific programs, courses and sections. If English is not your first language, the College offers Conditional and Unconditional acceptance for academic programs: UNCONDITIONAL acceptance allows students to proceed to a full load of four to six academic courses per semes- ter. An English Language Assessment is not needed. Requirements are: • TOEFL score of at least 550, or • CBT 213, or • iBT 80, or • IELTS 6, or • English 12/90 in Canada, or • completion of College of the Rockies English Language Training Students with CONDITIONAL accept- ance must complete our English Language Assessment before registra- tion in academic courses. Test results will determine if a student must take the English Language Training (ESL) program, or can proceed directly to a full academic program. • ESL students may take one to three academic courses per semester with their English program, depending on their English level. There is no extra tuition fee for these academic courses. • NO TOEFL score is required for students who complete the English Language Training program College of the Rockies programs that offer conditional acceptance are: • Applied Business Technology • Applied Computer Certificate • Business Administration • College Preparation/High School Completion • Criminal Justice • Early Childhood Education • Human Service Worker • Human Kinetics • Recreation Management • Tourism Management • University Transfer/Associate Degrees International students are welcome in the following programs if they first meet the requirements for unconditional acceptance.   • 10. 10 www.cotr.bc.ca English Language Training (ESL) *Multiple levels (four months to complete each level) English Language Assessment will determine student’s ESL level + University Transfer Courses *one to three courses per semester for students in the top four levels Students from all over the world attend College of the Rockies’ English Language Training (ESL) program. This program is for students: • preparing for academic programs in Canada and/or • improving communication skills • minimum age 18 years old; mature students welcome The program is designed to improve all language areas: • listening • speaking • communication/conversation • pronunciation • reading • writing • vocabulary The ESL schedule consists of: • 15–22 hours per week of classes depending on level • mornings and afternoons, five days per week, Monday–Friday All classes are interactive and include cultural information. Levels are available for all language abilities: • multiple levels of ESL • students are placed in the appropriate level after completion of the English Language Assessment • approximately four months to complete a level • during the fall and winter semesters, students in the top three levels of the English Language Training program may take one to three academic courses with Canadian students for audit or credit (number of courses allowed depends on level) • during the spring and summer semesters, three or four levels are offered • students who complete all levels of the ESL program may take university level English courses offered at the College; university level English courses are required for all undergraduate degree programs in Canada • short-term students are welcome to attend any semester for a minimum of six weeks English Language Training (ESL) University Transfer Programs *Students can complete the first two years of study towards a Bachelor Degree Transfer to University in Canada University of British Columbia (UBC) • Simon Fraser University (SFU) University of Victoria (UVic) • and many other universities in Canada *two to three years for a Bachelor Degree *Completion times for programs vary based upon program selection and student ability

  • 13. 13 • Online and Desktop Production • Word Processing • Legal BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION www.cotr.bc.ca/BusinessAdmin The Business Administration Program is designed for students interested in pursuing either the: • Certificate – 10 courses at COTR • Diploma – 20 courses at COTR • Bachelors Degree after transfer to university The first year (10 courses) covers the basic knowledge in the core areas of business and is accepted for credit by all the major universities includ- ing UBC. A Business Administration certificate is awarded on completion of the first year. Second year courses allow students to attain recognized qualification in specialized areas such as accounting, general management, and marketing. College of the Fraser Valley Program Profiles APPLIED BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY (ABT) www.cotr.bc.ca/abt The ABT certificate program provides office, business, and technical skills training in a self-paced modular format with individualized instruction. New students may enter the program on the first Monday of any month from September to May if space is available. A mix of computer, bookkeeping, and business communications courses give students a general knowledge of office work. After completing core courses, students may continue their training in one or more of the majors: • Accounting • General Office Assistant • Integrated Office Systems

TOURISM MANAGEMENT www.cotr.bc.ca/tourism The Tourism Management Program is designed for students interested in pursuing either the: • certificate (12 courses), or • diploma (24 courses) Graduates may enter a career in man- agement training or entrepreneurial positions within the tourism industry. Courses include: • Tourism Management • Business Administration • Computers • Recreation Management • Work Experience Practicum Students who earn a Tourism Management Diploma can receive two years of credit towards a four year Bachelor of Tourism Management Degree at Thompson Rivers University, Malaspina University College and Capilano College. ADVENTURE TOURISM BUSINESS OPERATIONS www.cotr.bc.ca/atbo This 10 month program provides academic and practical training in the business of adventure tourism. Course work provides students with the busi- ness skills required in nature-based tourism businesses. The program consists of classroom study, lab work, field trip experiences, and culminates with a six week practicum allowing students to apply their knowledge and skills on the job while working alongside a practicing professional. Through exposure to existing adven- ture tourism businesses, students not only cover the industry standards, but

The program includes the latest industry-developed training material, including these BC provincially- endorsed programs’ standards: • Adventure Tourism BC Standards and Certification for the Tourism Professional • Outdoor Technical Skills and Association Standards • Parks Canada Interpreters Certificate • National Coaching Certification Theory Level I • Commercial Recreation Management Plan • Advanced Wilderness First Aid • Avalanche Training • Business Plan Development Certification awarded upon successful completion. Students have the oppor- tunity to attain direct experience from adventure tourism operators during the practicum. RECREATION MANAGEMENT/ EVENT MANAGEMENT www.cotr.bc.ca/RecManagement The Recreation Management Program is for students interested in pursuing: • Recreation Management Certificate (12 courses) • Event Management Certificate (12 courses) • Recreation Management Diploma (24 courses) • Recreation Management Diploma with an Event Management Major (24 courses) Recreation Management graduates are well positioned for career paths in public recreation services, recreation facility administration and leisure services within the tourism industry. Event Management students will gain skills in special events, conventions, and conference management. A work practicum is part of these programs. EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION www.cotr.bc.ca/ece This 10 month program offers a var- iety of learning activities including lectures, group discussions, individual and group assignments, seminars, field trips and a community practicum placement. Completion of a program in Early Childhood Education from COTR is the first step in becoming a Certified Early Childhood Educator in BC. Students who complete the certificate program can continue for one more semester to obtain an Early Childhood Education diploma with specializations in Infant/Toddler or Special Needs. PROFESSIONAL COOK TRAINING www.cotr.bc.ca/culinary COTR offers the three levels of the provincial Professional Cook Training program, providing practical experi- ence in a fully-equipped training kitchen and formal dining room. Practical instruction includes soups, sauces, meat and fish cookery, vege- tables, desserts, pastry, cold kitchen, and meat cutting.
