Brining you affordable graduate universities with off-campus employment options
to increase chances of H1B
H1-B Myth
• 85,000 visas issued per year in specialty occupations (STEM fields)
• 20,000 visas for Master’s degree from non profit universities
• For highly skilled and highly educated
• Sponsored by U.S. Company
• Valid for 3 years
• Large Majority for Computer Sciences/IT Professionals
Limitations:
• Spouse on H4 cannot work
• Lottery: 225,000 petitions per year = chances of getting visa 1/3
• Very expensive for employers
• very difficult to sponsor MBA students
How to Increase your chances to get
H1-B
1. Previous work experience
2. Specialized skills (.net, bootstrap, java etc)
3. Master’s Degree from U.S. with Specialized Field
in IT/CS
4. Years of experience working for US Employer to
invest = sponsorship
Types of Legal Employment for
F-1 Graduate Students
1. On-campus part time
employment
2. Curricular Practical
Training (CPT)
3. Optional Practical Training
(OPT)
Study Metro Presents Schools with
First Year Off-Campus Employment
Graduate students who
want to work in the U.S. in
local businesses,,
studying for their
master’s degree while
earning U.S. wages may
enroll in CPT programs.
Legal Overview of "Integral" Part
of Curriculum
 CPT is authorized by the U.S. Homeland Security Department but
work permit is issued and approved by the school.
 The option of Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is for F-1
international students enrolled in participating school's degree
programs.
 F-1 students wishing to participate in an off-campus-training
program must enroll in a program that is “an integral part of an
established curriculum.”
 The training must be directly related to the student’s major field of
study. Can be ”alternate work-study, internship, cooperative
education, or any other type of required internship or
practicum, which is offered by sponsoring employers through
cooperative agreements with the school” (Title 8, Code of
Federal Regulations, Part 214.2 (f)(10).
CPT Program Overview:
 The purpose of a Curricular Practical Training (CPT))
program is to integrate real-life employment training with a
student’s education. It is designed to give students practical
work experience in curriculum-related employment with
local U.S. based corporations and businesses.
 International students may work up to 40+ hours per week
in US based companies for up to one year, or work 20
hours per week for full Master’s program.
 Two types of CPT eligibility:
 Required CPT Programs – eligible first semester/quarter. Must
have met CPT requirement by end of program to graduate.
 Optional CPT Programs – eligible after one full academic year.
CPT Program Example:
 Student is enrolled in Master of Information Technology
 Program Length – 2 years or 18 months
 Program Credits- 36 semester or 48 quarter
 Requirement: Full Time Student, 12 courses completed
 11 courses related to program curriculum + 1 course for CPT may
count as an or as core class
 Student required to take 3 classes per semester or 2 per quarter
 If student is on CPT, student takes an extra class equivalent to
just 1 credit. After 3 semesters on CPT, student will receive full
class credit, which may count as elective or a core class.
 Classes on taught on weekends, online and once a month.
 Student works during the day.
Why Choose CPT Program?
1. Gain Practical Skills The practical training that students receive
by working in a U.S. based company gives them skills and
experience that cannot be obtained in a normal classroom-only
format, thus giving an advantage in achieving life goals after
graduation.
2. Get more Work Experience: CPT programs that have the
curriculum set up so that the internship jobs are mandatory and
are part of the whole program, require students to begin their
curricular training immediately, usually in the first or second
semester of study. This will help you land a job for OPT and
H1-B earlier.
3. Earn US Dollars The wages that are paid to the students for their
CPT or internship employment are equal to the wages paid to
U.S. employees. Net earnings (after any taxes) are retained by
the students and used for their personal or educational needs.

  • 15. Why Choose CPT Program? 1. Gain Practical Skills The practical training that students receive by working in a U.S. based company gives them skills and experience that cannot be obtained in a normal classroom-only format, thus giving an advantage in achieving life goals after graduation. 2. Get more Work Experience: CPT programs that have the curriculum set up so that the internship jobs are mandatory and are part of the whole program, require students to begin their curricular training immediately, usually in the first or second semester of study. This will help you land a job for OPT and H1-B earlier. 3. Earn US Dollars The wages that are paid to the students for their CPT or internship employment are equal to the wages paid to U.S. employees. Net earnings (after any taxes) are retained by the students and used for their personal or educational needs.
