2. 前に means ‘before’. The verb coming before 前 is always in
the dictionary form regardless of the verb at the end of the
sentence.

6. 1. Expressing a Sequence of Events (1) ‘Before’
However, when the emphasis is not on the order of the actions
but the on the duration of the periods action, you often omit に.
I began Japanese study before I came to Japan.!
日本に 来る 前に、日本語の べんきょうを はじめました。
!
I had studied Japanese for two years before I came to Japan.!
日本に 来る 前、2年間 日本語の べんきょうを していました。
!
I had studied Japanese for......years before I started this course.!
このコースを はじめる 前、.....年間 日本語の べんきょうを していました。
