GO accounted for $547.3M in 2016 revenue
and 83% of the revenue amongst the Top 10
games released in 2016.
• Pokemon GO accounted for 37% of the
downloads amongst the Top 10 games

on to Game of War.
• Kabam pushed out of Top 10 with the
emergence of Niantic (Pokemon GO) and Jam
City.
• Top 10 publishers comprise 62% of the overall

Original IP Brand IP
Monthly Brand vs. Original IP Revenue (US, Jan ’16 – Dec ’16 )
• Original IP games (63% of total revenue in Dec
‘16) continue to dominate the mobile gaming
market relative to Branded IP based games
(37% in Dec ’16).
• However, Branded IP games (139% growth)
are growing much more strongly than Original
IP based games (30% growth). Branded IP
should surpass Original IP based games in
revenue in 2018 assuming current growth
rates.
• Much of the new Brand derived game revenue
growth came from Pokemon GO and Clash
Royale (based on Clash of Clans IP)

• Quarterly revenue increased by 53% from
$430.8M in Q3 ’16 to $660.7M in Q4 ’16, while
quarterly downloads increased by 16%.
• Monthly revenue dipped significantly from Jul ’16,
most likely due to the launch of Pokemon GO
during that month. Revenue decreased by 18%
from Jun ‘16 to Jul ‘16 and bottomed out in Aug
‘16 before recovering and growing strongly
through Dec ‘16. We believe most of the Pokemon
GO payers came from the Strategy category.
• Build-Battle was on a strongly declining trend from
Feb ‘16 through Sep ‘16 before recovering
through Dec ‘16 although not recovering to Jan
’16 levels. Clash of Clans leads this sub-category
and we believe it will continue to struggle in the
coming years to maintain market share

• Strategy accounted for $2.1B in revenue and contains 4
games in the Top 5 Grossing.
• 52 games met our minimum selection criteria in this
category and of those 52, 39 of the games were either
March-Battle (like Game of War) or Build-Battle (Like
Clash of Clans).
• As Build-Battle has likely already peaked, we expect this
year or next year may be the year that March-Battle
peaks and that other sub-genres like Summon-Battle
(Clash Royale) involving real-time synchronous PVP or
other sub-genres with strong PVP characteristics may
vie for category leadership.
• This year the Top 5 category games comprise a much
smaller percentage of overall category revenue
compared to the past 3 years indicating a movement
towards less revenue concentration at the very top.

• Quarterly revenue increased by 9% from $283.5M
in Q3 ’16 to $308.5M in Q4 ’16, while quarterly
downloads decreased by 15%.
• Monthly revenue and downloads dipped in Jun
’16, however revenue recovered by the end of the
year. More worrisome, however, are downloads
which dropped significantly in Q4 by 18%
compared to the average for the first 3 quarters.
• Average monthly downloads per title dropped
from 565K in Q1 to 362K in Q4. Does this portend
potential category weakness in the future?
• The Casino category shows the strongest
contribution from older release year titles showing
strong resistance to title turn-over and strong
player title loyalty compared to other categories.

• Within the category we see a very competitive
marketplace with no dominant category leader and a
fairly large number of competitive titles (57 titles tracked)
• Within the Slots sub-genre Land-based (authentic to the
real-world casino experience) and Social (focus on
social features like Big Fish Casino) slots style games
continue to dominate the market. New types of slots

significantly impact the market this year

Saga (2012) and Candy Crush Soda Saga (2014).
• Match-3 continues to dominate the Puzzle genre
with 78% of overall 2016 year revenue.
• Of the remaining sub-categories Match-Blast has
shown the strongest growth stealing share from
Match-3. Match-Blast started with 3% share of the
Puzzle market in Jan ‘16 but grew to 9% by Dec
’16 mainly on the back of Toy Blast. Sling Puzzle
(Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Friends) also gained
share from 1% to 3%.
• Match-3 started the year in Jan ‘16 with 81%
category share but then slowly losing share month
over month through Dec ‘16 where it ended up

top 3 games in the category: #1. Candy Crush Saga, #2.
Candy Crush Soda Saga, and #3. Candy Crush Jelly

category as well.
• Although the Candy Crush titles still control the top 3

• Turn-based RPGs made the strongest overall
revenue growth from Q3 to Q4 (40%) in 2016
helped in large part by Star Wars: Galaxy of
Heroes. Tactics based RPGs showed the
strongest percentage growth from Q3 to Q4 (90%)
in 2016
• A strong slate of 2015 releases in RPG make
2015 release year titles (including Galaxy of
Heroes) the strongest contributor in 2016. 2014
remains strong because of Summoners War
despite lack of many other contributing titles that
year.

• Outside of the top 2 titles (Galaxy of Heroes because of

top 2 titles comprised 25% of the category revenue in

• Although we categorize titles based upon core
gameplay, from a systems perspective, we see a
majority of title revenue from RPG games with core

• Simulation exhibits a much broader range of
revenue distribution by sub-genre and release
year.
• In particular, the Creative Sandbox sub-genre
showed a sharp spike in category revenue share
from a range of 8-13% to 22% in Dec ‘2016. This
was largely driven by ROBLOX. Fortunate timing
given their March ‘17 funding!
• While Idle games rank at the bottom in our
Category revenue rankings keep in mind that Idle
games typically generate the majority of their
revenue from ads which are not tracked in Sensor
Tower data. Further, anecdotally we are seeing a
fairly large number of Idle games entering the
market so very possible to see a spike in this
category next year.

Moderate yearly turn-over and relatively well distributed

• Outside of Pokemon GO, the primary revenue driving
titles in this genre include non-gambling card and dice
games. Currently those games do not generate enough
revenue to warrant their own category. Having said that,

• The Action genre is largely dominated by 2 titles:
1. Marvel Contest of Champions and 2. Super
Mario Run (the big spike in Dec ‘16).
• Note that the large contribution of 2016 revenue
from 2014 release year titles is also from
contribution of Contest of Champions just as
Platformer sub-genre contribution and 2016
release year contribution to 2016 revenue is from
Super Mario Run.
• Fighting as a sub-genre gained category market
share fairly steadily from 73% to 83% from Jan ‘16
through Nov ‘16 until dropping to 38% in Dec ‘16
due to Super Mario Run which captured 51% of
the category market share in Dec ‘16.

5. MOBA has the second number of qualified titles at 4
but continue to struggle with monetization.
• The top game in this category MARVEL Contest of
Champions showed strong 2016 revenue growth
especially in Nov ’16 and Dec ‘16. Fortunate timing
ahead of their acquisition by Netmarble in Dec ‘16!
• Although Fighting sub-genre games comprise 3 of the

Warner Bros titles Mortal Kombat X or Injustice.

• Recent release year titles seems to have more
success than older release year titles in Sports.
• Although we list the Sports Simulation (“Sim”)
sub-genre here, no game qualified for that sub-
genre in 2016. Nordeus’ Top Eleven gets pretty
close though. However, we fully expect this
category to emerge within the next few years.
• 2014 release year titles have the strongest
contribution to 2016 Sports revenue with Madden
NFL Mobile the strongest contributor for that year.

• 8 Ball Pool’s revenue with pool relative to more popular
sports such as baseball, basketball, and golf seems to
indicate difficulty by mobile game makers to
appropriately design sports games for the mobile gaming
market.
• High action, heavy micro based games have historically
not performed well in the Western mobile gaming
market, hence we should expect a mobile optimized
sports simulation game would emerge that captures
significant market share in this category.

• Only 12 titles qualified for the Racing category
with the Timer based racing sub-genre holding the
most titles at 4 by Q4 ‘16. CSR Racing 2 and Pro
Series Drag Racing both released in 2016 drove
that sub-genre up significantly to be the highest
revenue sub-genre in the category.
• Racing Rivals and Real Racing 3 contribute the
majority of 2013 release year revenue.
• The significant uptick in Timer based sub-genre
occurred in June ’16 from the release of CSR
Racing 2 and then in December with the release
of Pro Series Drag Racing. The uptick in the
General racing sub-genre was primarily due to
dramatic revenue increase in both Hill Climb
Racing 2 and Hill Climb Racing in Dec ‘16.

Sub-genreRevenue2016
• Despite dominating as the #1 genre on console,
shooting games on mobile as a genre are the
smallest revenue category we cover.
• Shooting significantly underperforms in the West
relative to, for example, China. WeFire, a top 10
grossing game in China, was launched by Glu as
Rival Fire and flopped in 2016. This seems to
indicate deep cultural differences for Shooting in
the West (typically less micro the better).
• While FPS seems to be gaining greater revenue
strength throughout 2016, this was from a very
limited sample size as only 3 FPS and 3 Sniper
games qualified for our report.

Nordeus’ Top Eleven gets pretty close though. However, we fully expect this category to emerge within the next few years. • 2014 release year titles have the strongest contribution to 2016 Sports revenue with Madden NFL Mobile the strongest contributor for that year. 66 Genre Dashboard – Sports (3 / 5) 0 $5M $10M $15M $20M $25M Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Action Sim

CSR Racing 2 and Pro Series Drag Racing both released in 2016 drove that sub-genre up significantly to be the highest revenue sub-genre in the category. • Racing Rivals and Real Racing 3 contribute the majority of 2013 release year revenue. • The significant uptick in Timer based sub-genre occurred in June ’16 from the release of CSR Racing 2 and then in December with the release of Pro Series Drag Racing. WeFire, a top 10 grossing game in China, was launched by Glu as Rival Fire and flopped in 2016. This seems to indicate deep cultural differences for Shooting in the West (typically less micro the better). • While FPS seems to be gaining greater revenue strength throughout 2016, this was from a very limited sample size as only 3 FPS and 3 Sniper games qualified for our report. 78 Genre Dashboard – Shooting (3 / 5) 0 $500.0K $1.0M $1.5M $2.0M $2.5M $3.0M Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec Sniper FPS
