2. What is Hip-Hop?
Hip Hop is a culture that consists of three
main artistic outlets:
-Rap
-Break dancing
-Graffiti
3. Rap
• This is the element of sound.
• It includes the beat created by the DJ
– Disc Jockey
• It also includes the words or poetry delivered
by the MC
– Microphone Conductor
4. BreakDancing
• This is expression through movement of the
body; a style of dance.
• People who do this are called B-boys or B-girls
5. Graffiti
• This is the visual form of expression.
• It is often, but not necessarily put up in public
places.

7. Hip Hop originated in the 1970’s from African American music. It was created by merging
various historical traditions. The Hip Hop culture actually started in the Bronx New York.
The influence of African Americans and later the influence of Jamaicans and Latino
immigrants helped create the area in which rap music was invented as a synonymous
part of Hip Hop music and culture. Hip Hop music consisted of 4 features of African
mythology:

8. Hip Hop in the 70s
Keith Cowboy who was part of the furious
five, and where the first artist to refer to this
type of music as Hip Hop as it was still being
called Disco Rap.
According to the words of artist Kurtis
Blow : During the early days of Hip
Hop, it was characterised by dividing
fans and detractors of Disco music. Then
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five a new genre of music called Go-go
emerged as a reaction against disco
music. This then eventually mixed with
Hip Hop.
9. p Hop in the 80s
This was the decade that made Hip Hop more of a diverse and
complex genre. The biggest artists during the early 80’s were Grand
Master Flash, T La Flash and Russell Simmons. These three artists
were the first to bring a new sound to hip hop and their tracks have
been simulated by various other artists.
This was made from tracks by Run DMC and LL Cool J
which included elements of Rock and drum machine
led simplicity. Also seen as the moment that the
music started to become more aggressive. Also the
new school consisted of shorter songs and aimed to
gain easier radio play. This was the time that Hip Hop
had become commercially successful.
As a result, The Beastie Boys made an album called
License to ill which became the first rap album in
history to become no 1 in the billboard charts.
10. Golden Age
The Golden Age also emerged in the 80’s which consisted from
diversity, quality, modernization and influence. This involved a strong Jazz
influence. Public Enemy created the album “It Takes a Nation of Millions to
Hold Us Back” which is widely acknowledged as Hip Hops Greatest moment.
De la Soul

A Tribe called Quest Eric B. & Rakim
Music used to reflect the violent lifestyles of some inner-
city youths. This type of Hip Hop changed the main centre
of Hip Hop from New York to Los Angeles. This was called
the Golden Age because it is said that many of the greatest
rappers of all time emerged in this era. Also most of the
rappers of the 21st century describe their influences as
being from this time in Hip Hop. Arguably along with the
90’s the best era of hip Hop.
West coast Gansta rappers
11. Hip Hop in the 90s Wu Tang Clan included all time greats such as
Method man, Ghostface Killah and O.D.B. The
90’s debatably produced the best hip hop artists
of all time such as Notorious
B.I.G, 2Pac, NaS, and Snoop Dogg. These and
more artists from the 90’s are seen as the all time
greats and that revolutionised the genre.
However this was also a time when Hip Hop was
becoming more violent and drug related. It
started to gain criticism for being too much of a
bad influence for youths living in America.
Dr Dre’s album ‘The chronic’ included many
lyrics references of drugs, killing etc. Which was
released in 1992. A war that was continuously
ongoing between West Coast and East Coast
Rappers lead to the death of Hip Hop legends
Tupac and Notorious BIG.Wars have been
publicised continuously through the years
between rappers and ego’s clashing. For
example Nas feuding with Jay Z, 50 Cent with Ja
Rule. It seems to be a pattern that the most
successful rappers usually get targeted for
“Beef” as it is called.
12. sent) 21st century Hip Hop
Hip Hop sales have declined in the recent years however many artists are attempting to salvage hip hop and
bring it back to life. How ever Rick Ross, Eminem and Fabolous are artists that are still going strong in the
industry today.
Artists such as Soulja Boy Tell ‘em have created a
new sound to hip hop. However various “OLD
SCHOOL” artists such as Ice T and Styles P have
accused Soulja Boy of single handily killing Hip Hop
with his songs that do not follow the same
fundamentals as traditional Rap. During the 21st
century rap and hip hop music and the sound that
comes with it has very much transformed and has
now become mixed more with R&B and Dance
music. Rappers such as Pitbull and Black eyed Peas
have very much changed the sound of hip hop music.
13. Hip Hop music used to possess a story of deprivation, life and death situations where
as tracks these days are more about dancing, sex, and money. Artists such as
Akon, Justin Timberlake, and Keri Hilson have helped with the merging and
combining of Hip Hop and R&B music. These days various tracks released for example
from T.I. Gain a place in the Hip Hop charts and also in the R&B charts. This is proof
that Hip Hop music has changed so much over the last 10 years. T.I.’s latest album
Paper Trail has received negative feedback for being not as good as albums from the
90’s such as Moment of Truth by Gang Starr.
14. Collaborations
In The 21st century many rappers have emerged on the stage and have made a very big impact on not
only Hip Hop but many other parts of the music industry. Various Hip Hop artists have found the need
to explore the horizon and spread their influence and success to different genres of music. Lil Wayne’s
latest album “the Re-Birth” released in 2009 includes strictly rock music without any Hip Hop music
involved. Also Jay Z created a collaboration with Rock n Roll icons Linkin Park which was a mixture of
hip hop music and Rock music. During the latest ten years there have been many rappers that have
tried to take the crown as being this generations King of Hip Hop. For example Lil Wayne who refers to
himself as “the best rapper alive” which is in some cases difficult to deny when looking at the impact
he has made. Also Jay Z who refers to himself as “the One and Only” and the “Godfather of Hip Hop”
believes he has been such an influential figure in Hip Hop for so many years. Kanye West is another
egocentric star that thinks he is “the Greatest” of all time. He does have some what of a point seeing
as he is one of the best lyrical rappers that Hip Hop has ever seen.
15. The Dark side of Hip-hop
Many Artists of today have been thought to have being involved in Freemasonry and evil
spiritual worship in Occults. Some people choose to believe this philosophy and some choose
not to. But it is all over the internet. Artists believed to be involved are Jay Z, Kanye
West, NaS, Rihanna, Beyonce, Lil Wayne, Tyga. The “evidence” is in their lyrics, antics and
gesturing. This dark side doesn’t exist just in Hip Hop but in the whole music industry. This so
called belief has spread to various different areas of music including Pop artists such as
Britney Spears, Madonna and Christina Aguilera. Of course this isn’t necessarily true and
may just be a wild conspiracy. Of course this does sound insane when first thought
about, however there are hundreds of videos on YouTube that expose these conspiracies in
depth and discuss the issues raised in this topic.
16. The next slide will discuss one well known Record label which has

and is similar to covers of hip hop albums
such as Illmatic (1994) and Ready to Die
(1994).Amid release delays and leaks,Tha
Carter III became one of the most anticipated
releases of 2008. The album debuted at
number one on the US Billboard 200

week. It reached sales of 2.88 million copies
by the end of 2008 and produced four singles
that achieved chart success, including the
international hit "Lollipop" and Billboard hits

League. Rebirth was promoted as
Wayne's rock music debut, though it
includes some hip hop tracks.
The album debuted at number two on
the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling
176,000 copies in its first week. It became
Wayne's seventh top-ten album in the

1da, Cool & Dre, StreetRunner, Noah "40"
Shebib and DJ Infamous, among others.

the US Billboard 200 chart, based on its
first-week digital sales alone. Following its
physical release, it featured an increase in
sales and topped the chart, becoming Lil
Wayne's second US number-one album
and the first studio album since Tupac
Shakur's Me Against the World in 1995 to
reach the top slot on the Billboard 200
while its artist was jailed. Its lead single
"Right Above It" became a top-ten hit in
the United States. Upon its release, I Am
Not a Human Being received mixed to
positive reviews from most music critics.
The album has been certified gold by the
Recording Industry Association of
America.
34. 2011
Tha Carter IV is the ninth studio album by American rapper Lil
Wayne, released on August 29, 2011 through Young Money
Entertainment, Cash Money Records and Universal Republic Records.
Recording sessions for the album began in late 2008, shortly after Lil Wayne's
sixth studio album, Tha Carter III (2008) was released to strong sales and
critical acclaim: however, the sessions were put on hold, as Lil Wayne claimed
he did not want to follow an album he held in high regard so quickly with
another, potentially inferior release. In the interim, Lil Wayne released two
other solo albums: the largely rock-themed Rebirth (2010) and I Am Not a
Human Being (2010). The latter was reportedly composed from unreleased
material from the original Tha Carter IV sessions, as the album was released
whilst Wayne served a prison sentence at Rikers Island prison for illegal
possession of a weapon, and was thus unable to record any new material: this
also meant Tha Carter IV's recording sessions were once more put on
hold.Following Wayne's release from prison, the album was re-recorded from
scratch. The recording sessions resumed at various locations, involving several
record producers including Bangladesh, Detail, T-Minus, Noah "40"
Shebib, Polow da Don, Jim Jonsin, Kane Beatz, Boi-1da, Willy
Will, StreetRunner, Cool & Dre, Young Ladd, The Smeezingtons and Kanye
West. The album's largely concerns the themes of sex, violence, drugs and
crime, but also love, hurt and emotional conflict. Appearances on the album
include Cory Gunz, Drake, T-Pain, Tech N9ne, Andre 3000, Rick Ross, John
Legend, Bruno Mars, Birdman, Kevin Rudolf, Jadakiss, Bun B, Nas, Shyne and
Busta Rhymes.Following a heavily delayed release, Tha Carter IV was released
to digital retailers at midnight on August 28, 2011, following Wayne's
scheduled performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, and physical retailers
received the album the following day. The Carter IV achieved first week sales of
964,000 copies in the United States and became Lil Wayne's second album to
top the US Billboard 200 in its first week. The album received generally mixed
reviews from music critics, who were divided in their responses towards the
album's production and Wayne's own performances on the album: they felt it
a disappointment compared to his previous work. In an interview with XXL, Lil
Wayne hinted that the album might be his last.
35. Drake
Aubrey Drake Graham (born October 24, 1986), who records under the
mononym Drake, is a Canadian recording artist and actor. He originally
became known for playing Jimmy Brooks on the television series Degrassi:
The Next Generation. In June 2009, Drake signed a recording contract with
Lil Wayne's Young Money Entertainment. In November 2009, Lil Wayne
released a statement announcing that Drake's first studio album, Thank
Me Later, had been completed. The album was released on June
15, 2010, and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.m The album
has since gone platinum. He released his second studio album on
November 15, 2011 titled Take Care. Drake was set to release an R&B
mixtape sometime in the future along with a collaboration album with Lil
Wayne however both have been postponed for various reasons. Drake has
worked with several other hip-hop artists such as Lil Wayne, Young
Jeezy, Kanye West, Eminem, and Jay-Z. With the success of his mixtape
turned EP So Far Gone, Drake has been nominated for several awards
including Grammys, even being selected to perform at the 2010 Grammy
award ceremony. Drake has also won several awards, including two Juno
Awards in 2010 for Best New Artist, and Rap Recording of the Year.
36. 2010
Thank Me Later is the debut studio album of
Canadian recording artist Drake, released June
15, 2010, on Young Money Entertainment, Cash
Money Records and Universal Motown Records.
Production for the album took place at various
recording studios during 2009 to 2010 and was
mostly produced by longtime collaborators Noah
"40" Shebib and Boi-1da, and also featured
contributions from Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, Nicki
Minaj, Lil Wayne, The-Dream and Kanye
West, among others. Thank Me Later features a
predominantly sparse, downbeat production and
contains subjective lyrics concerning themes of
fame, self-examination, and love. The album
received positive reviews from most music
critics, who complimented Drake's introspective
lyrics and drew musical comparisons to the works
of hip hop artists Kanye West and Kid Cudi.
Following an anticipated release, it debuted at
number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling
447,000 copies in the United States in its first
week. It reached platinum certification in Canada
within its debut week and produced four singles
that attained chart success including international
hit "Find Your Love" and Billboard hits
"Over", "Miss Me" and "Fancy". The album has
been certified platinum by the Recording Industry
Association of America, with shipments of one
million copies in the United States.
37. 2011
Take Care is the second studio album by Canadian
recording artist Drake, released November
15, 2011, on Young Money Entertainment and Cash
Money Records. It is the follow-up to his 2010 debut
album Thank Me Later. Production for the album took
place during 2010 to 2011 and was handled by Noah
"40" Shebib, Boi-1da, T-Minus, Just Blaze, The
Weeknd, and Jamie xx, among others. With the
album, Drake sought to record a more cohesive
recording than his debut album, which he viewed was
rushed in its development. Expanding on the sonic
aesthetic of his debut album, Take Care features an
atmospheric sound that is characterized by low-key
musical elements and incorporates R&B, pop, and
electronica styles. Drake's lyrics mostly eschew
boastful raps for introspective lyrics that deal with
topics such as failed romances, relationship with
friends and family, growing wealth and fame, concerns
about leading a hollow life, and despondency. The
album has been noted by music writers for its
minimalist R&B elements, existential subject
matter, conflicted lyrics, and Drake's alternately sung
and rapped vocals.
One of the most anticipated music releases in
2011, Take Care experienced several delays to its
release date and subsequently leaked to the Internet
nine days before its scheduled release. The album has
produced two singles, "Headlines" and "Make Me
Proud", both of which attained chart success in the
United States and Canada. Upon its release, Take Care
received general acclaim from music critics, who
praised its expansive production, emotional
themes, and Drake's songwriting.

R&B. Contributions to the album's production came from a wide
range of producers including J.R. Rotem, Bangladesh, Swizz Beatz, T-
Minus and will.i.am. After a much anticipated release as the result of
Minaj's extensive featured appearances on the singles of other
artists, Pink Friday debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200
chart with first-week sales of 375,000 copies. Ultimately reaching
number one on the chart, it has been certified platinum by the
