Global markets at a glance
European stocks fell on Thursday, extending the previous
session's retreat, hurt by worries over valuation levels in
growth sectors such as technology following strong gains
this year. Euro zone equity indexes managed to trim heavy
losses in late trade, however, as the euro currency reversed
gains and slipped again.
Asian stocks crawled higher on Friday as upbeat U.S. eco-
nomic data helped revive some risk appetite lost following
air strikes on Houthi militants in Yemen, while the dollar
rebounded. Japan's Nikkei was flat after a loss of 1.4 per-
cent the previous day, although South Korean and Austra-
lian shares rose slightly. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-
Pacific shares outside Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS was up only a
modest 0.1 percent after sliding 1 percent the previous
day.
Wall Street Update
US stocks fell for a fourth straight session on Thursday but
indexes ended well off session lows with support from eco-
nomic data and earnings. Semiconductor stocks were again
under pressure, this time after SanDisk cut its revenue out-
look. Its shares tumbled 18.4 % to USD 66.20 and an index
of chipmaker shares fell 1.4 %. The index fell as much as 3.5
% earlier. The S&P 500 is still less than 3 % below its record
high hit three weeks ago. The index rallied last week as
concern ebbed about an overheating dollar.
The DJI average fell 40.31 points, or 0.23 %, to 17,678.23,
the S&P 500 lost 4.9 points, or 0.24 %, to 2,056.15 and the
Nasdaq dropped 13.16 points, or 0.27 %, to 4,863.36.
Previous day Roundup

and March F&O expiry. The Sensex plunged 654.25 points
to close at 27457.58 and the Nifty fell 188.65 points to
8342.15. About 1033 shares have advanced, 1781 shares
declined, and 171 shares are unchanged on the BSE.

According to the ministry of mines, 199 concessions, includ-
ing 15 iron ore leases, are expected to be auctioned by vari-
ous state governments in the next few months. Unless state
governments act immediately, ore production in the coming
year is unlikely to be better than the past few years. The
Federation of Indian Mineral Industries (Fimi) estimates iron
ore production in 2015-16 at 135 million tonnes (mt), a
mere eight per cent growth over the current financial year.
Crude oil prices were slightly lower on the dollar's bounce
after surging overnight on the escalating conflict in Yemen.
U.S. crude CLc1 was down 1 percent at $50.87 a barrel after
rallying 4.5 percent overnight. The Saudi military operation
against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels has not affected the
oil facilities of major Gulf producers. But fears the conflict
could spread and disrupt Middle East shipments have put a
floor under the price of oil, which slumped to a six-year low
earlier this month. Violence in Yemen firmly capped Asia-
Pacific equity gains for now.
Gold prices spurted by Rs 400 to trade at Rs 26,950 per 10
grams at the bullion market today after the precious metal
climbed above $1,200 an ounce in Singapore amid in-
creased buying by jewellers to meet seasonal demand. Sil-
ver also recorded a significant rise of Rs 950 to Rs 38,750
per kg on increased off take by industrial units and coin
makers.
Bullion traders attributed the sharp rally in gold prices to a
firming trend in overseas markets as West Asian unrest
boosted demand for safe haven. Besides, festive season
buying by retailers, weakness in the rupee against
the dollar and shifting of funds from falling equity markets
influenced precious metal prices, they said. Markets re-
mained closed yesterday as traders refrained from doing
business to protest the Budgetary proposal to make
PAN must for buying gold worth over Rs 1 lakh. Gold in Sin-
gapore, which normally determines price trend on the do-
mestic front, rose by 0.5 per cent to $1,201.60 an ounce,
the highest price since March 5 and silver by 0.6 per cent to
$17.07 an ounce.

Ministry of Finance released showed that in terms of Sec-

Union Government has decided to support Andhra Pradesh
for setting up of SPV for the Polavaram Irrigation Project

the 1940s, the irrigation project is likely to irrigate over
seven lakh acres in Andhra Pradesh and produce 960 MW of
hydel energy.
Chana prices were down by 0.22% to Rs 3,616 per quintal in
futures trade yesterday as speculators trimmed position
amid sluggish demand in spot market. Adequate stocks po-
sition in the physical market on higher supplies from major
producing belts also put pressure on chana prices. At Na-
tional Commodity and Derivative Exchange, chana for deliv-
ery in April month eased by Rs 8, or 0.22%, to Rs 3,616 per
quintal with an open interest of 1,37,970 lots. Similarly, the
commodity for delivery in May contracts traded lower by Rs
3, or 0.08%, to Rs 3,635 per quintal in 1,02,530 lots. Offload-
ing of positions by speculators amid subdued demand in the
spot market mainly influenced chana prices at futures trade.
The onion dehydration industry says much of it faces the
prospect of closure due to a steep rise in onion prices. Re-
duced supply because of decrease in output andunseasonal
rain compromising the crop’s quality in major producing
regions have pushed up prices.

CURRENCY MARKET UPDATES:
The euro reached 1.1051 on Thursday, pulling further away
from a 12-year trough of $1.0457 hit last week, before los-
ing steam in the afternoon. The currency is still down about
20 percent over the past year, which is set to give euro zone
companies a major lift as roughly 50 percent of euro zone
earnings come from outside the region.
The euro's slide has been driven by a quantitative easing
programme launched by the European Central Bank this
month, contrasting with the trajectory of monetary policy in
the United States where the Federal Reserve is seen raising
interest rates in 2015.
The euro was flat at $1.0883, knocked off an overnight high
of $1.1052 after encouraging U.S. data boosted the dollar.
The dollar stood was at 119.17 yen after pulling back from a
five-week trough of 118.33 struck overnight against the yen,
a safe-haven currency that attracts bids in times of geopo-
litical tension.
The partially convertible rupee ended weaker at 62.67/68
per dollar, compared with 62.3250/3350 on Wednesday, as
month-end dollar demand along with weaker equities hurt
the local currency.
The benchmark 10-year bond yield ended up 3 basis points
at 7.80 percent, tracking a surge in global oil prices, raising
concerns about inflation. The benchmark five-year swap
rate ended up 2 bps at 7.08 percent, and the one-year rate
ended steady at 7.56 percent.
India's one-day cash rate ended higher at 7.25/7.30 percent
compared with Wednesday's close of 6.90/6.95 percent.
