 "Goth" means different things to each follower. Many adopt
unusual fashions in order to separate themselves from other
youth. The goth subculture is a contemporary subculture
found in many countries. It began in England during the
early 1980s when the punk subculture was in declining
phase.
 Mentality of a Goth: I want to be left alone but I want to be
seen.
 Researcher Jasin Tamlin comment: "If we take a look at the
640 sites that are listed on the Gothic Web Ring, we will find
many of them filled with desperation, depression, anger,
hatred, despair."

• The use of extreme black clothing, light colored makeup, unusual hair styles, body
piercing, bondage items, etc.
• A fascination with medieval, Victorian and Edwardian history.
• Wearing of symbols such as a Christian cross; an Egyptian ankh or "Eye of Ra,“
• Many Goths write about being depressed. Followers seem leftouts and withdrawn, when in
public. They are often much more "happy and carefree in the company of Goths."
• "A lot of people turn to the Gothic subculture after having a difficult time in school, feeling
alienated, and looking for a way to express themselves that mirrors those feelings. Others find
the scene through literature, still others want to be shocking."
Some factors that are commonly observed are:
Quotations by Goths
 "...being Goth, for me, is seeing beauty, and its coming destruction, at the same time.
For me...It's the last dance as the walls are crumbling around you..." Beatgrrl
 "[Goth] is the ability to find the art where art seems to be lacking; to find the light in
the darkness and embrace it for all its worth..." Jennifer Mason
 "When a Goth dies, God laughs." R.G. Green from the parody web site
GodHatesGoths.com.
For girls, some common Goth looks are:
 A corset top with a long, flowing or tutu-like skirt.
 A crushed velvet dress with either boots or heels.
For guys, some common Goth looks are:
 A fishnet shirt and vinyl or leather pants with some sort of boots and other various
accessories.
 A white shirt (sometimes with the collar folded up to cover the neck), black pants, a
black vest, boots or dress shoes.
 Some of the guys will wear makeup, skirts, corsets or heels. It's not really meant to be
cross-dressing because they are not actually trying to look like women. Gothic tends to
be a very androgynous thing, where some of the straight guys like to look or dress
feminine, either to challenge social gender barriers, to show that they have an open
mind, or as just a fashion thing.

 Grunge came into existence in 1980’s in Seattle and
was made famous by Nirvana.
 Grunge music is generally notable for its loose song
structures, its extremely loud, overdriven, and fuzzy
guitar tone, and its growling aggressive vocals, all of
which belies a deeply melodic undertone.
 Nothing signals the grunge look more quickly than a
lumberjack-style shirt and a pair of work boots.
 People who consider themselves grunge value thrift and
utility, rather than style. Anything second-hand is
automatically more appropriate and more desirable.
 Sunglasses and tall socks are an often-seen in grunge
look. One can Wear dated snap-bracelets or cheap
jewelry.
 Messy and greasy hair are both calling cards of the
grunge look. For men, ungroomed facial hair and long
dark hair quickly signal grunge.
 Katrina Kaif had been seen with a hot new grunge
guitarist look in her film 'Mere Brother Ki Dulhan‘.
 Sidharth Malhotra went grungy in “EkVillian” and
does so again with “Brothers,” Ranveer Singh was
seen in the period film “Gunday” with this kind of look
and of course, we also hadVarun Dhawan in
“Badlapur.”
 Among the ladies, from Katrina Kaif in “Dhoom:3” and
Anushka Sharma in the latest “NH10,” we have names
likeAishwarya Rai Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Amrita Rao
had such looks.
 Katrina kaif was seen in grunge
look in the movie “Mera
Brother ki Dulhan”.
 She was wearing Shoulder
necked T-Shirt with Short
denim and some bangles in one
hand and inexpensive jewellery
and Boots.
 Her hairs were undressed.
 She was shown playing Guitar
and singing song in the
movie.
 Ranbir Kapoor was seen in
grunge look in his film
“Rockstar”.
 He was wearing an old
casual shirt with half
leather jacket and dhoti
pant.
 At times he wore a cap or
wounded cloth on his head
to show hi grunge style.
 He also had long hairs and
beard.
 A style or technique that is characterised by
extreme simplicity.
 Minimalism is about a perfect balance out of
imbalance, about pairing shapes, fabrics,
proportions and colours that speak about
harmony as a whole.
 The concept of minimalist is “ Less is More “.
 The style is effortless and unfussy and
powerful.
 There is something extremely confident and
uncomplicated about this unpretentious look.
 Simi Garewal was a
minimalist icon in 60’s
and 70’s era.
 She usually wears her
signature white clothes
on TV shows and
award ceremonies and
is popularly known as
“The lady in white”.
 The NewYork fashion
scene is all ablaze with
minimalism.
 In make-up and hair , in
clothing and footwear
minimalism is the trend
which is all about looking
fresh and radiant.
 Au naturale is the new
mantra of life.
 Power brows , nude
lipsticks ,sun-kissed
bronzed and sculpted
cheeks , glossy and
smooth hair , well
manicured french-
manicured nails are what
people crave for.
 Fans of heavy metal music have created their own
subculture which encompasses more than just
appreciation of the style of music. Fans affirm their
membership in the subculture or scene by attending
metal concerts, buying albums, in some cases growing
their hair.
 Heavy metal fans go by a number of different names,
including metalhead, headbanger and thrasher.
 Typically, the heavy metal fashions of the late 1970s –
1980s comprised tight blue jeans or drill pants,
motorcycle boots or hi-top sneakers and black t-shirts,
worn with a sleeveless kutte of denim or leather
emblazoned with woven patches and button pins from
heavy metal bands.
 Here you can see actor
Akshay Kumar in heavy
metal style.
 He is wearing Shades,
fingerless gloves in his
hand and number of
chains in his neck of
heavy metals (Gold,
silver chains)
 He is seen in this look in
no of movies like
“Boss”,”De Dana Dan”
etc.
 Some other bollywood
stars that have been
seen in heavy metal
style are Bappi Lehary,
Baba Saighal, Raftar
Brothers, Sanjay Dutt
andYoYo Honey Singh.
ORIGIN: Hippie is a member, during the 1960s and 1970s, of a
countercultural movement that rejected the mores of mainstream
American life . The movement originated on college campuses in
the United States, although it spread to other countries, including
Canada and Britain .Hippies emerged from a society that had
produced birth-control pills, a counterproductive war in Vietnam,
the liberation and idealism of the civil rights movement, feminism,
homosexual rights, FM radio, mass-produced LSD and a strong
economy.
CHARACTERISTICS:
•Hippies sought to free themselves from societal restrictions,
choose their own way, and find new meaning in life.
•They favoured long hair and casual, often unconventional, dress,
sometimes in “psychedelic” colours. Many males grew beards, and
both men and women wore sandals and beads. Long flowing
granny dresses were popular with women, and rimless granny
glasses with both men and women.
•Both men and women commonly wore headbands, floppy hats,
flowing scarves, and beads with blue jeans or bell-bottoms and tie-
dyed T-shirts. Rebelling against corporate culture meant making
clothes or buying cheaply at thrift shops and military surplus
stores, so clothes were often ragged and patched or embroidered.
Flowered clothing and embroidery were popular, and flowers
became an important hippie symbol because hippies revered and
felt connected to nature.
Hare Rama Hare Krishna is a 1971 Indian film directed by Dev Anand starring
himself, Mumtaz and ZeenatAman. The movie dealt with the decadence of the
Hippie culture in which Zeenat Aman payed the role of a westernized hippie.
In the movie ‘Jackpot’,
Naseeruddin Shah followed
the hippie culture in his
clothing . He wore floral prints
and colourful shirts and had
long hair.
"Easy Rider" (1969) showcases the dark side of the hippie movement, this
classic Dennis Hopper movie is the tale of two bikers travelling from Los Angeles
to New Orleans, and the mayhem that ensues.
Vanessa Hudgens
clothing inspired
by hippie culture.
Paris Hilton follows
the Hippie style.

Followers seem leftouts and withdrawn, when in public. They are often much more "happy and carefree in the company of Goths." • "A lot of people turn to the Gothic subculture after having a difficult time in school, feeling alienated, and looking for a way to express themselves that mirrors those feelings. Others find the scene through literature, still others want to be shocking." Some factors that are commonly observed are:
  • 4. Quotations by Goths  "...being Goth, for me, is seeing beauty, and its coming destruction, at the same time. For me...It's the last dance as the walls are crumbling around you..." Beatgrrl  "[Goth] is the ability to find the art where art seems to be lacking; to find the light in the darkness and embrace it for all its worth..." Jennifer Mason  "When a Goth dies, God laughs." R.G. Green from the parody web site GodHatesGoths.com. For girls, some common Goth looks are:  A corset top with a long, flowing or tutu-like skirt.  A crushed velvet dress with either boots or heels. For guys, some common Goth looks are:  A fishnet shirt and vinyl or leather pants with some sort of boots and other various accessories.  A white shirt (sometimes with the collar folded up to cover the neck), black pants, a black vest, boots or dress shoes.  Some of the guys will wear makeup, skirts, corsets or heels. It's not really meant to be cross-dressing because they are not actually trying to look like women. Gothic tends to be a very androgynous thing, where some of the straight guys like to look or dress feminine, either to challenge social gender barriers, to show that they have an open mind, or as just a fashion thing. • 26. ORIGIN: Hippie is a member, during the 1960s and 1970s, of a countercultural movement that rejected the mores of mainstream American life . The movement originated on college campuses in the United States, although it spread to other countries, including Canada and Britain .Hippies emerged from a society that had produced birth-control pills, a counterproductive war in Vietnam, the liberation and idealism of the civil rights movement, feminism, homosexual rights, FM radio, mass-produced LSD and a strong economy. CHARACTERISTICS: •Hippies sought to free themselves from societal restrictions, choose their own way, and find new meaning in life. •They favoured long hair and casual, often unconventional, dress, sometimes in “psychedelic” colours. Many males grew beards, and both men and women wore sandals and beads. Long flowing granny dresses were popular with women, and rimless granny glasses with both men and women. •Both men and women commonly wore headbands, floppy hats, flowing scarves, and beads with blue jeans or bell-bottoms and tie- dyed T-shirts. Rebelling against corporate culture meant making clothes or buying cheaply at thrift shops and military surplus stores, so clothes were often ragged and patched or embroidered. Flowered clothing and embroidery were popular, and flowers became an important hippie symbol because hippies revered and felt connected to nature.
