3. Solar system is made up by celestial bodies .
Celestial bodies are natural objects.
The sun, planets, satellites, comets, asteroids, meteoroids and all those
objects shining in the night sky are called celestial bodies or heavenly
bodies .
We can not see moon and all those bright tiny objects during day time. It
is because the very bright light of the sun does not allow us to see all
these bright objects of the night sky.
Celestial Bodies or Heavenly
Bodies
5. Some celestial bodies are very big and hot.
They are made up of gases.
They have their own heat and light.
They emit a large amount of heat and light.
Example: The sun is a star.
Stars
6. Constellations are various patterns formed
by different groups of stars.
Constellations
7. Pole stars were used to determine the direction
during the night by ancient people.
Pole Star
8. Satellite is a moon.
The satellite of our earth is moon.
It is a companion of our earth and moves around it.
Some of the other planets also have satellite.
Satellite
9. The sun is the center of the solar system.
It is huge and made up of extremely hot gases.
It provides the pulling force that bind the solar system.
The sun is ultimate source of heat and light for the solar
system.
The Sun
10. Planets
They are celestial bodies.
They do not have their own heat and light.
They are lit by the light of the stars.
11. There are eight planets in our solar system.
In order of their distance from the sun, they are:
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and
Neptune.
All the eight planets of the solar system moves around the sun in fixed paths. These
paths are elongated circles. They are called orbits.
Mercury is nearest to the sun.
It takes about 88 days to complete one round along its orbits.
Venus is considered as earth’s twin because its size and shape very much similar to
that of the Earth.
Planets
12. The Earth is the third nearest planet to the sun.
In size it is fifth planet.
It is slightly flattened at the poles.
The Earth
13. The conditions favorable to support life are probably
found only on earth.
The earth is neither too cold nor too hot.
It has air and water which are very essential for our
survival.
The air has life supporting gases like, oxygen and carbon
dioxide.
Because of these reasons the earth is a unique planet
in the solar system.
Why the Earth is called a unique planet in
the solar system?
15. Why the Earth is called blue planet?
Its two third surface is covered by water.
Water space of the earth is appeared blue.
16. Revolution and Rotation of the Earth
The Earth takes one year (365.24 days) to complete its
revolution around the Sun .
Apart from revolving around the sun each planets rotates
about its axis.
The earth axis is an imaginary line joining the north pole
and south pole, through the center of the earth.
The Earth is appeared to rotate in the anti clock wise
direction.
The earth rotates from west to east.
The sun appears to move from east to west.
The Earth completes a rotation in about 23 hours and 56
minutes.
18. The Moon
The satellite of the Earth is moon.
It appears big because it is nearer to our planet earth than
other celestial bodies.
It is about 3,84,400km away from the earth.
The moon moves around the earth in about 27 days.
It does not have conditions favorable for life.
