The document discusses strategies for attracting a young adult and teenage audience to a thriller film. It addresses genre, music, production company, distributor, director, representation, and visual elements. The genre of thriller and dark mystery helps teenagers relate to themes that challenge societal ideas. The production company and distributor are known for appealing to younger audiences with thrillers and dramas. Representation of teenagers in London makes the film more appealing by showing their real lives instead of stereotypes.
2. GENRE
The thriller genre of this film is popular with young adults and teenagers.
The dark mystery of this film helps teenagers relate more as within this age
group, they are most likely to feel much more down and topics that
challenge ideas within the society helps teenagers relate better as they
usually see the negative side of society especially since teenagers are
stereotypically bad and selfish people.
The surprise that the audience experience within this film is due to the
mystery of real theories that people are discussing amongst themselves.
Those that know about it, will most likely become extremely interested in
the film as they know about it and may lead them to believe in it. Many will
become aware of this and will react by having further research about this
theory and this encourages them to create their own theories about this or
other issues and topics within society.
3. MUSIC
The dark sinister music that is played throughout the opening of this film, will
make the audience anticipate the worst possible thing that could happen to
the character.
The high pitched synthesiser creates a distorted feel which makes the
audience intrigued almost as though they’re hypnotised as the repetitive
music plays making them feel as though they are in a never ending cycle that
they find it hard to escape from.
This music also helps the audience feel how the character feel, down,
depressed and scared. This way the audience are able to easily put
themselves in her shoes.
4. PRODUCTION COMPANY
Scorpio Productions mostly attracts a younger audience as the films the
produce are mostly, thrillers, and teenage dramas. Due to this the audience
will already have trust in the production company which means they will
most likely give this film a chance as they are aware that it will appeal to
their age group and preferences.
Scorpio Productions is also known for producing films that are different to
any other. They usually focus on real matters and opinions that the younger
generation will have and use the films to portray them and allow their views
to be seen by everyone else.
This production company is also known to produce films that are dominated
by teenage and young adult actors which makes the audience believe them
more as they can relate much better to the story.
5. DISTRIBUTOR
White Lantern Films is a UK independent film company that produces and
distributes films. The main genres that they distribute are psychological thrillers
such as K- Shop.
This will be popular with the target audience as they favour thrillers and rather
than waiting for a new thriller to release by bigger distributors, they will search
for others especially independent. Many teenagers watch White Lantern Films
as they are different and not the typical thrillers that people have had enough
of.
As this films is a different thriller, it will be increasingly popular with teenagers
seeing as they will give this film a chance seeing as they trust in this distributor
and their choice in films to distribute.
6. DIRECTOR AND STARING ACTORS
The director for this film is Dan Pringle. I chose him because he is not very well known
hence it will work in favour of the low budget film. However, the film he directed K-
shop, was popular amongst thriller fanatics as it was a unique film so the audience that
loved that film will know they can enjoy this film too as the thriller genre is very evident
in a different way than most are.
nagers, he will bring enough publicity for the film and the audience will find it intriguing to see how
7. REPRESENTATION
The way that I was able to attract my audience is due to the representation of
them within the film. Due to the use of the familiar setting of London, there is a
curiosity for the audience as they feel like they have some involvement with the
film because of their age and where they live.
As teenage Londoners are not proportionally represented within films, this will
stand out as it is different and the audience do not feel as though they are
being forgotten. Usually teenagers are shown to be white and living in fancy
homes in America, which makes teenagers lose interest as they know that is
not how they all live, a film such as this that show the real side and lifestyle of a
teenager is much more appealing to them.
8. VISUAL
The low angle shot on the floor shows that the character
is very important. This helps establish to the audience
the power that a teenager has as her feet are only seen
within the frame.
However in this shot, the audience may believe that this
character is a villain as her feet are within the centre of
the frame, which is unusual in a thriller.
The over the shoulder angle helps the audience
focus on the poster and see what the character
is looking at. This helps them become the
character themselves as they need to read the
contradictory statement.
