  2. 2. What is Philippines Contemporary Music? • Contemporary music in the Philippines usually refers to compositions that have adopted ideas and elements from 20th century art music in the west, as well as the latest trends and musical styles in the entertainment industry.

  4. 4. What is the Importance of Contemporary Music? • Contemporary music helps us understand the world around us and ourselves, and challenges us to think in new ways about the same problem we’ve always had.
  5. 5. Characteristics of Contemporary Philippine Music includes the following: • The use of dissonant harmonies. • The use of uncommon and/or complex instrument. • More use of brass and percussion instruments. • Use of electronically created and synthetic sounds.
  6. 6. Forms and Types of Philippine Music • There are 3 kinds of music here in the Philippines: 1. ETHNIC TRADITIONAL MUSIC 2. EUROPEAN-INFLUENCED MUSIC 3. AMERICAN INSPIRED MUSIC
  7. 7. Ethnic Traditional Music The traditional and typically anonymous music that is an expression of the life of people in a community.
  8. 8. BALLAD This refers to a song that explain an event occurring in a community. Usually described as a popular romantic song in the urban areas. Examples: ( IDANGDANG from Bukidnon and LOLAI LIYANGKIT of tausug).
  9. 9. CHANT This refers to a song with an accompanied melody and variable rhythm. Example:( MEKENI MEKENI DUGDUG DOREMI)
  10. 10. SONG DEBATE This is a song involving male and female singers who try to outsmart each other about a certain topic.
  11. 11. EUROPEAN- INFLUENCED MUSIC
  12. 12. ART SONG It is a composition characterized by merging the voice, part, lyrics and the accompaniment together “to achieve an artistic musical whole” Example: (Kundiman / Habanera)
  13. 13. DANZA This refers to a social dance in duple time Example: ( Nicanor Ablerador’s “ikaw rin!” and Antonio Molina’s “ Hatinggabi”)
  14. 14. LITURGICAL MUSIC This refers to vocal and instrumental composition that go together with the official rites of Christian churches.
  15. 15. KUMINTANG It is originally documented as a war song, the kumintang is a dance of love accompanied by a guitar.
  16. 16. PASYON CHANT This refers to the various styles used throughout the country for the singing of the payson.

  22. 22. OPERA It is essentially drama that is sung and accompanied by instruments.
  23. 23. SEMI-CLASSICAL MUSIC
  24. 24. BAND MUSIC This refers to a composition created for the band, which is group of brads, percussion and woodwind instruments.
  25. 25. MARCHA/MARCH This refers to composition with music played in regular phrases and strongly accented rhythm, usually in 4/4 time signature.

  27. 27. PINOY ROCK It involves the uses of drums, electric guitars, synthesisers, and other electronic instruments.
  28. 28. SAFE PINOY POP or “MIDDLE-OF-THE- ROAD” It is a type of music that is shown in the composition of Apo Hiking Society and Jose Mari Chan.
  29. 29. PINOY FOLK It is inspired by simple and repetitive tunes made popular by Western disco music.
  30. 30. PINOY DISCO It is essentially a Filipino adaptation of Western disco music.
  31. 31. RAP It is describe as musical form involving a fast-paced rhythmic narration accompanied by electronic musical instruments (FRANCIS MAGALONA the one who introduced pinoy RAP).

  33. 33. Ogie Alcasid (19670 Herminio Jose Lualhati Alcasid, Jr. (born 27 August 1967), known as Ogie Alcasid is a Filipino singer-songwriter, television presenter, comedian, parodist, and actor. He is currently the President of OPM (Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-Aawit) and Commissioner of the Edsa People Power Commission. .Ogie was a former batch member of all male singing group Kundirana batch 1985 after Gary V. in 1985. His first album was released in 1988, his debut movie was Feel Na Feel was released by Regal Entertainment in 1990, followed his 2nd movie was Tiny Terrestrial: The Tiny Professors released by OctoArts films in 1991, the same year, Ogie made his VIVA films debut movie, Pitong Gamol released in 1991.Alcasid's television career started as one of the hosts of comedy show Small Brothers on ABS-CBN in 1992.
  34. 34. Rico Blanco (1973) Rico Rene Granados Blanco (born March 17, 1973) is a Filipino singer, songwriter, multi- instrumentalist, record producer, actor, endorser and entrepreneur. Best known of being one of the founding members, chief songwriter and served as the lead vocalist of the Filipino rock band Rivermaya from 1994 until 2007, His compositions gained success and critical acclaim, those earn himself a reputation of being one the most respected music icons in the the Philippines.

Ryan Cayabyab (1954) Ryan Cayabyab (born Raymundo Cipriano Pujante Cayabyab on May 4, 1954 in Manila, Philippines but known as Mr. C) is a Filipino musician, composer and conductor; he was Executive and Artistic Director for several years of the defunct San Miguel Foundation for the Performing Arts. He was also a resident judge for the only television season of Philippine Idol, broadcast in 2006. His works range from commissioned full-length ballets, theater musicals, choral pieces, a Mass set to unaccompanied chorus, and orchestral pieces, to commercial recordings of popular music, film scores and television specials. Cayabyab's current project includes the Ryan Cayabyab Singers (RCS), a group of seven young adult singers comparable to his group Smokey Mountain in the early 1990s. He is the executive director of the Philpop MusicFest Foundation Inc., the organization behind the Philippine Popular Music Festival. This songwriting competition for amateurs and professionals puts the spotlight on songwriters and encourages Filipinos to preserve their unique musical identity
  36. 36. Levi Celerio (1910-2002) Levi Celerio (April 30, 1910 – April 2, 2002) was a Filipino composer and lyricist. Celerio was a prolific songwriter, with over 4,000 songs to his credit. He is perhaps best known for being a leaf- player, a feat for which he was put into the Guinness Book of World Records. In 1997, he was named National Artist of the Philippines for Music. Levi Celerio was born on April 30, 1910, in Tondo, Manila to parents that hailed from Baliuag, Bulacan. He received a scholarship to the Academy of Music in Manila and became the youngest member of the Manila Symphony Orchestra. He wrote several number of songs for local movies, which earned for him the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Film Academy of the Philippines. Celerio has written lyrics for more than 4,000 Filipino folk, Christmas, and love songs, including many that became movie titles.

Rey Valera (1954) Reynaldo Valera Guardiano (better known as Rey Valera) (born May 4, 1954 in Meycauayan, Bulacan, Philippines) is a well-known singer, songwriter, music director, film scorer and television host from the Philippines. He wrote and produced songs that were recorded by various singers, most notably Sharon Cuneta. He is former head judge of the singing contest segment "Tawag ng Tanghalan" in a variety noontime show It's Showtime.
  38. 38. Nilo Alcala (1973) Nico Alcala is a Los Angeles-based Filipino composer whose works have been performed in Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. His awards include the POLYPHONOS Young Composer Award from The Esoterics (Seattle, WA), the 2nd Prize Asian Composers League Young Composer Award (Tel Aviv, Israel), and an Ani ng Dangal (Harvest of Honor) Award from the Philippine President. Alcala’s work Mangá Pakalagián for chorus and kulintang ensemble was commissioned by the Grammy-nominated Los Angeles Master Chorale, directed by Grant Gershon and premiered on November 15, 2015, at the Walt Disney Concert Hall). His commissions also include the National Music Competition for Young Artists of the Philippines, the Andrea O. Veneracion International Choral Festival, Korean Ministry of Culture, Asia Europe Foundation, and premieres by the Metro Manila Concert Orchestra.
  39. 39. Lito Camo (1972) Lito Camo (born March 12, 1972) is a Filipino singer and songwriter. He established his reputation more solidly as a composer instead of being a singer which was his initial dream. He is known for songs such as "Bakit Papa? Tawag mo ako?", "Spaghetti Song", "Bulaklak", "Wowowee", "Boom Tarat Tarat", and "Otso-Otso". In the roster of artists and musician, Lito found inspiration in Ely Buendia of the Eraserheads. Lito Camo was a native of Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro.
  40. 40. Snaffu Rigor (1964) Snaffu Rigor he started composing in 1964. His first recorded Tagalog composition was "T.L Ako Sa'yo", a hit by Cinderella in 1975; he also wrote the lyrics to Ernani Cuenco's "Bato sa Buhangin" and the English version of "Araw-araw, Gabi- gabi". Rigor was a member of the bands Ramrods, Cinderella, Backdoor and Blackbuster, heads the Domestic A&R of Blackgold and 70's Superband.

  42. 42. Ernani Joson Cuenco (1936-1988) Ernani Joson Cuenco (May 10, 1936 – June 11, 1988) was a Filipino composer, film scorer, musical director, music teacher and Philippine National Artist for Music.

  45. 45. 1. KUBING This is a jaw harp made with bamboo and is one of the more well known traditional musical instrument.
  46. 46. 2. KULINTANG Another well-known Filipino instrument, the natives of meranao,tausug, and maguindanao take or a lot of pride and joy with these.
  47. 47. 3. KUDYAPI Also known as the Kutiyapi ,this is a stringed wooden flute that’s about 4-6 ft. long.

  49. 49. SLUDOY The skin of a single node of bamboo is raised forming 5 strings. These are raised from the body with frets underneath
  50. 50. 2. BALIING It is an instrument played with noses of the Apayaos Tribes in the region. It is called “nose flute”.
  51. 51. TUGO Is a musical percussion instruments native to the Philippines, where it is still played by many residents. It is large and shaped like a guitar, but made completely of wood.
