Note, Table, Diagram and Flow-chart
completion
This task type is designed to test candidates’ ability to understand
details and/or the main ideas of a section of the passage. You need to
be able to scan the text to find the location of the answers.
You also need to be aware of the type of word(s) that will fit into a
given gap (for example, whether a noun is needed, or a verb etc).
Two steps for completing notes, tables,
diagrams and flow-charts
1. Read the instructions and the question, and underline/circle important words (especially key words). This
will give you an idea of what you need to complete the reading task. By doing this, you will save time finding
faster the right section or area of the passage.
As you underline key words, think of possible synonyms for these key words.
An extra activity you can do at this point is to anticipate possible answers. Furthermore, in note and summary
completion, accurate grammar is required, so think about if you need a verb, a noun, a number, adjective, etc to
complete each gap.
2. Scan-reading the text quickly and locate the area or sections in the passage where the answers are.
Be aware that in the passage or areas of this, the key words you underlined in step 1 are likely to be expressed
in terms of synonyms or words paraphrased. Locating the same key words in a section of the passage does not
always mean that you find the answers you need in that section.
 For completing diagrams and flowcharts, answers can be usually found in 1
or 2 paragraphs or sections of the text.
 For completing tables and notes, answers can be usually found in 3 or 4
paragraphs or sometimes longer sections of the text.
