Linking is a challenge
Now, because of the web and social media, it is easy to start a blog, social stream, video channel or a website to express your passions, promote something that you’ve created and connect with people who have similar interests around the world. The barriers to entry for expressing yourself online or starting a digital business have dropped so much in the last decade, that there really isn’t anything stopping you from diving right in.
Having a personal brand and a reputation around it, online and offline, is not just important for sharing what you’re passionate about, it’s also extremely important if you want to find a great job or start your own business.
An estimated 80% of jobs are now found in the informal job market through networking and personal connections. The old days of creating the perfect resume and sending it out to every job posting found online rarely works anymore. Employers still look for the formality of a resume out of tradition, but if you want a creative job that is fun and interesting, then you’re going to have go a steps beyond and differentiate yourself from all those other people with only stale, boring resumes to offer.
Fortunately, in our digital age, we can start to build this brand before the customer ever meets us – using web and social media tools to start to build that relationship and showcase a reputation.
Today, social media has leveled the playing field, and if you're consistent in building your personal brand, you, too, can reap the rewards. It doesn't take a big, complicated effort, but it does require a persistent approach to promotion
Creating a personal brand starts with some research into your talents and interests, and how you can make a unique contribution.
Getting your own .com and starting a website is a lot easier than you think.
Get a website and start blogging. If you want to look professional, I strongly recommend buying your own domain name and getting an inexpensive $5/month host to run an easy-to-use content management system like WordPress. If you’re not technical and you don’t know anything about uploading through an FTP client or managing a MySQL database, then get your own domain and website all set up with a service like Hostgator WordPress Hosting, which is what I use. The other blogging platform worth checking out is Tumblr, but I find WordPress to be much more flexible and offers far more ways to grow your website.
Get an amazing theme for WordPress. Now, unless you’re a web designer, you’re probably not going to want to the spend the time learning HTML to create a website from scratch. Besides, with 1000s of free and premium themes available for WordPress why not customize a ready-made theme and focus on something else that you’re really good at. For free themes, check out the WordPress Free Themes Directory. If you want an inexpensive Premium Theme I find that Themeforest has the best quality of themes at reasonable prices.
Sign up for Google Analytics. To see how people discover your website, share your content and how they interact on your website, Google Analytics is an incredible free web analytics service. I recommend familiarizing yourself with its interface, because you can do just about anything necessary to improve a website by understanding the data that Google Analytics measures.
Start blogging. It is much easier to build your personal brand on Social Media platforms if you have some of your own content to share with others. When you’re getting started you don’t need to write long blog posts, you should try to keep them under 500 words and you can easily start by sharing videos, presentations and images that you find interesting by embedding them in your blog.
Facebook is the perfect place for personal branding. You can post pictures, videos, opinions, likes and dislikes, and other highly curated content that shows off who you are and what you stand for. Currently, it's the number one social networking site, with more than one million small businesses spending $100 million a year on Facebook advertising. It's considered one of the best places for business to consumer, B2C, branding.
Have a great cover shot, profile photo, about section (especially the preview) – and claim your Vanity URL, and choose a call to action button
Shopify - $9 per month – linked to PayPal – easy to set up, low transfer rate, easy to move money from accounts
Get a Twitter account. I actually find Twitter to be the most useful Social Media Platform because you can follow anyone you find interesting and easily interact and open a dialogue with best-selling authors, business experts and fascinating people – often with a single tweet. Plus, it’s a great content discovery tool where you can start or join conversations around topics and articles that resonate with you.
77% of LinkedIn members use the site to research people and companies and 44% report an increase in networking effectiveness from using LinkedIn.
Did you know that 65% of journalists have used LinkedIn for research?
Customize your LinkedIn Profile. Recent studies have shown that 70% of businesses recruit on LinkedIn. To be recruited on there you need to make sure your Profile is rated as 100% complete which requires a few hours of your time. Then, once you’ve done that, targeted jobs will appear on the sidebar of your Profile Page that are matched to your skills and experience, and you can apply for them directly through LinkedIn. Once you have your LinkedIn fully setup, you can take advantage of cool services like LinkedIn Resume Builder or Vizualize.me, which uses your LinkedIn data to create a visual, infographic-like resume.
Create a YouTube Channel. If you’d rather create fun video blogs than write content, YouTube is an amazing platform where anyone with something interesting to say can find an audience. If you’re not sure where to start, I recommend reading the YouTube Creator Playbook.
Since Michelle Phan began posting tutorials in 2007, she's gained millions of followers for her videos, which she enhances with her colorful costumes and themes. Her new beauty line, EM Michelle Phan, just launched this summer.
Use a Social Media Dashboard. I recommend using Tweetdeck or Hootsuite, two popular and free Social Media Dashboards. You can simplify the process of updating Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and your other Social Media accounts by using one of these Social Media Dashboard. Both Tweetdeck and Hootsuite have desktop clients, web-based clients and social apps to make it convenient for you to update your profiles from an iPhone, iPad and Android phone.
