2. CURIOUS FACTS
Sight is the strongest of all eagle senses. The eyes are large, can take up almost
50% of the head, and can weigh the same amount as a human eye. An eagles
vision is 4–5 times better than that of a human. Eagle eyes are angled 30 degrees
away from centre of the face, which gives eagles a greater field of view. Eagles
can see five basic colours to our three, and can detect UV light.
Cones are light detecting cells that are sensitive to colour. One of the reasons that
eagles have better vision than humans is because their retinas, a layer at the back
of the eyeball, have more cones. We have 200,000 cones per square millimetre,
whereas eagles have one million.
3. THE CONTINENT OF EAGLES
Most of the more than 60 species occur in Eurasia and Africa. Outside this
area, just two species can be found in the United States and Canada, nine
more in Central and South America, and three in Australia. Below is listed
all the members of the eagle family.
4. CHARACTERISTICS OF EAGLES
An eagle may resemble a vulture in build and flight characteristics but has a fully feathered
(often crested) head and strong feet equipped with great curved talons. A further difference is in
foraging habits: eagles subsist mainly on live prey
5. EAGLES DIET
Eagle diet is principally mammals and birds, taken both alive and as
carrion. Main live prey consists of medium sized mammals and birds
such as rabbits, hares, grouse and ptarmigan. The diet of coastal birds
includes gulls and other seabirds.
