4. Childhood:
Sent to military school at age of 10
Started in the artillery as a 16 year old lieutenant
When the revolution broke out he joined the new Republic’s
Army
5. His Accomplishments:
His legend began in 1795 when he put down a Royalist threat
1796 the Directory appointed Napoleon General of the French
Army against Austria and Sardinia
He soon swept into Italy and Won a series of victories
Soon he became the most famous general in France
6. Napoleon’s Coup
Directory quickly loses faith of the people
In 199, Napoleon takes control of France by Force
and assumed a dictatorship
He became emperor by using the plebiscites-
election where you vote “yes or no”
He won with overwhelming support, France wanted
a strong central leader
Through a series of victorious, Napoleon controls
almost all of Europe
7. Domination of Europe:
By 1810, Napoleon’s empire stretched from
the Atlantic Ocean to Russia
As the marched across Europe, he
eliminated serfdom, introduced religious
tolerance and spread the ideals of liberty
and equality
Napoleon thought that he was invincible
At this time he setup universal laws known
as the Napoleonic Code
8. Napoleon Loses
The Russia used a method called the Scorched-earth
policy
Burnt down their own towns, villages, crops so that
Napoleon’s army wouldn’t have food or shelter
Napoleon and his army finally reaches Moscow to see
it burnt to the ground
9. Exile:
Napoleon is exiled to the island of Elba by the French
Louis XVIII becomes the new king but is unpopular to
the people
Napoleon escapes Elba and French welcomes him
back
10. Death:
Napoleon lives in lonely exile for 6 years at St.
Helena writing his memories
Napoleon dies in 1821 due to stomach cancer
11. Napoleon’s Legacy
Nationalism throughout Europe rose during and after
his reign
The congress of Vienna (1815) is called to figure out how
to create peace between nations
After his defeat, Europe experiences relative peace
between nations for 100 years until WWI
