1. Riedl, R.; Mohr. P.; Kenning, P.; Davis. F.; Heekeren, H:. (2014) Trusting humans
and avatars: A brain imaging study based on evolution theory. Journal Of
Management Information Systems. Spring 2014; Available from: Business Source
Complete, Ipswich, MA. Accessed November 9, 2014.
2. Primary, Scholarly Journal Article.
3. There are five authors in this article and they are all working together. René
Riedel is one of the five authors. He was a guest researcher and guest professorat
universities in the United States. Peter N.C. Mohr studied psychology and his
research interests included behavioral modeling of decision process. Peter H.
Kenning was a professor of marketing at Zeppelin University. His main studies were
customer behavior, and neuroeconomics. Fred D. Davis research included
technology- supported decision-making. Lastly, Hauke R, Heekeren studies are the
effect of drugs on cognitive and affective purposes. They created this source to show
what results they found by doing different researches. They made this to inform
people what online avatar is. The audience could really be anyone, especially anyone
else doing research on this topic. The main ideas are that the research found that
avatar based communication will increase interpersonal trust in anonymous online
environments.
4. The results they found by doing this research was that people are better able to
predict the trustworthiness of humans than the trustworthiness of avatars. Another
fact they found was that decision making about whether or not to trust another
actor. Which proves that the brain area is the importance for the prediction of other
individuals’ thoughts and intentions. I think these facts do add up to credibility. I
read the abstract of the article and found that they did find some information on
avatar and how it can affect a person if they have had experience with an online
avatar.
5. I plan on using this information to explain how an online avatar can affect a
person if they ever go through that experience. This article does a good job
explaining how the mind works when dealing with trustworthiness and trusting
someone you don’t know online. So I think I could touch base with the brain and
trustworthiness a little bit in my presentation.

3. The author of this article is Hayley Peterson. Hayley is a reporter for Business
Insider’s retail section. She previously worked as a White House correspondent for
the Washington Examiner in Washington, D. C. She has multiple reporter
experiences such as the ones I just mentioned but also state government reporter.
She created this article to inform people what catfishing online is and how it works
basically. Throughout this article she shares multiple stories, regarding online
catfishing. The audience for this article could be anyone that is interested in
catfishing and also anyone using the Internet and should be informed how
dangerous and disappointing online dating can be. Even though the URL looks fake,
this is a British national daily newspaper.
4. In this article they define what the term ‘catfish’ means, they say it is, to pretend
to be someone you’re not online by posting false information, such as someone
else’s pictures, on social media sites, usually with the intent of getting someone to
fall in love with you. This is important to know when reading this article because the
article is different experiences they have had with catfishing. Every experience is the
definition of what they clam to be, catfish. I think this author is creditable because
her background of reporting sounds very high up and very reasonable. Although the
URL looks fake, this is a British national daily newspaper, so it’s the same as New
York Times for us. So I think this newspaper and also the author is creditable.
5. In my presentation I might use some of the pictures of the people meeting whom
they think is the love of their life, to show how catfishing happened. Also I will use
the definition in my speech that they defined. I could also use some of the examples
of how you need to be cautions with online dating and such from this article.

Dating Profiles. Pages 449- 452. Retrieved November 18, 2014, from

3. There are three authors to this article, the first being, Jeffrey Hancock. He is a
professor at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. His research has two types of
language phenomenon, verbal irony and deception. Catalina Toma is also a
professor at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Her studies consist of how
people understand and relate to one another when interacting via communication
technologies, online dating and such. Nicole Ellison is a professor at University of
Michigan. Her focus is on issues around self- presentation in the online dating
environments. This paper was created to evaluate dishonesty in this context by
comparing online daters’ profile information with their actual, observed
characteristics. The audience of this paper is people researching and wanting to
know more about online dating and the risks of it.
4. I think this book supports the authors very well. Throughout the whole section of
the book I was focused on the authors had plenty of information that was exactly
what the section was about so I find the authors very creditable. Because the
authors have the background of researching this topic in the past I think the
evidence in this section of the book supports the authors claims.
5. I am going to use this in my presentation by talking about the three main things
they talk about in this section of the book. The three things they research in this are
the frequency of deception in online dating profiles, the magnitude of the lies, and
gender differences in the making of dishonesty. They did more of an experiment to
figure out them three things so I can explain what they did to find this information
too.

season-on-mtv.html?_r=0
2. Secondary, Newspaper Article
3. Jon Caramanica is the author of this newspaper article. When I looked up Jon
Caramanica a ton of articles came up and they were all submitted and available to
view at the New York Times Newspaper. He created this article to explain to people
how easy it is to lie online about your appearance, or even your age. They mention
in this article that people lie all the time about their age to get access to a website
they want to get into. This article explains if its that easy to get assess to a website,
its even easier to be someone your not online. So this article I would say would be
for anyone thinking about or going though online dating.
4. I think this article is very creditable because in the article he does a little
interview with Nev Schulman, which is one of the main hosts for the TV Show:
Catfish. So I feel like it is creditable because it is coming straight from the source
that was there, the primary source. In this article the hosts are asking previous
catfishers their experiences and how they reacted when they met the love of their
lives. I feel like it can be creditable both the author and the authors claims because
most of it is directly from one of the main hosts of the TV show.
5. I could talk about some example things they used in the article. For instance, in
some instances it is taken out of proportion, once a group of friends cat fished their
friend then eventually had a date with this friend of theirs but they recorded it and
posted it online all over, this case was the first case to every be taken to court.
1. Toma, C., & Hancock, J. (2010, April 7). Looks and Lies: The Role of Physically
Attractiveness in Online Dating Self Presentation and Deception. Retrieved
November 19, 2014, from http://crx.sagepub.com/content/37/3/335.full.pdf html
2. Primary, Journal Article
3. The authors of this article are Catalina Toma and Jeffrey Hancock. Toma is a PhD
candidate in the Department of Communication at Cornell University. Her research
examines the effect of new communication technologies on social developments.
She is also apart of the Department of Communication Art at the University of
Wisconsin- Madison as an assistant professor. Hancock is an associate professor in
the Department of Communication at Cornell University. His research examines
social interactions. They created this article to show people the studies they did.
They examined the role of online daters’ physical attractiveness in their profile self-
presentation. Any one else looking to do research over online dating could refer to
this article to get ideas on how they could collect data and do an experiment. I also
think this article does a good job at explaining the results, which are 80% of online
users use some type of false information on their profile, so it see this as a very good
source for parents to show their children.
4. I find this article and the authors very creditable because they both are professors
in the field of this research. Another reason I think these authors are creditable is
because I also have a previous article from them above so they have done multiple
researched regarding this topic. Another thing this article has is a lot of references at
the end of it, which is a good sign because that means they got a lot of their
information from other sources too, making it have even more information, and
from a variety.
5. I could use this whole research in my speech because it gives a lot of
informational things and data about online dating and how dangerous and how
much false information there is online. I think people need to know the real facts of
online use, with that being said, this article does a lot of telling the audience what
they found in doing this research.
