Mud Sweat and Gears: Eastern Region Mountain Bike Series

Introduction: Series of seven major mountain bike
events across the Eastern Region. Grown from one
event in in 2008 (100 participants) to three events in
2009 (450 participants) to six in 2010 (1600 participants)
and to seven events in 2011 (2000 participants).
Format: Each event is affiliated to a cycle club /
organisation, who help deliver the event and promote a
grassroots atmosphere. Four races across the day for
different abilities / ages. Podium for each race.
Coaching provided for young people before race (allows
parents to race!). Results from each race form part of an
overall Series standings – with an end of season
presentation. Riders can also pick up British Cycling
ranking points.
Marketing: Press features, flyering cycle shops, online
forums, event directories, banners and newsletters.
Merchandise: Photography and cycle shirts.
Sponsorship: Four sponsors affiliated to the series.
Major sponsor negotiated for 2012.
Attendance: 300 per event
Audience: All ages and abilities
The Essex Sports Awards

Introduction: The Essex Sports Awards is
recognised as the most prestigious event in the
local sporting calendar.
Marketing: Promoted in partnership with BBC
Radio Essex and internet.
Event Format: Ten awards, with three short-
listed nominees per award. Sponsor and winner
of the award interviewed by BBC live on air.
Special guest also interviewed alongside certain
awards. Food and drinks to conclude the
evening.
Audience: Sponsors, dignitaries, shortlisted
candidates (with families/friends), sports
personalities and the press.
Attendance: 300 audience. Broadcast live on
BBC Radio to over 250,000 people. Top 100
listen again BBC programmes. Video of the
event also produced.
Sponsorship: Innovative sponsorship package
raised over £21,000 in revenue.
Further: Winners from the awards automatically
entered in BBC East Sports Personality of the
Year. The winners of which are then
automatically entered into BBC Sports
Personality of the Year, creating a recognition
pathway from local to national.
Amphibian Playground

Introduction: Offering the general public a chance
to go on an adventure across land and sea.
Planning: Due to the tidal conditions - complex
operating procedures were developed in partnership
with HM Coastguard and technical advisors to
ensure participant safety.
Event Format: Two races – The Naze Channel
Challenge (2km paddle) and The Horsey Island
Circumnavigation (7km paddle). Participants start
with a headland / beach fun run (with a few
obstacles thrown in for good measure). They then
grab themselves a kayak and with some team effort
paddle their way to amphibian history!
Infrastructure: 60 double sit-on-top kayaks with
buoyancy aids and paddles, off-road vehicles and
trailers, 12 meter pontoon, 5 safety ribs, throw lines,
4x4 first aid, cargo nets and event village.
Audience: Public from 14+ yrs
Attendance: 120 participants (maximum permitted
by HM Coastguard)
The Council for Sport

Introduction: Annual conference which seeks to bring together
everyone involved in community sport in Essex.
Format: Opening presentations followed by workshops. Conclude with
networking lunch and drinks.
Attendance: 100 – 150 people
Audience: Local Authorities, National Governing Bodies, Health Care
Professionals, Volunteer Sector, Clubs, Coaches, Police, Community
Workers and Sport Businesses .
The Essex Corporate Games

Introduction: The Essex Corporate Games
brings together companies and organisations
from across the region to participate in a series of
fun sporting challenges. The sporting challenges
are designed to ‘even the field’ and expose
participants to an array of sporting opportunities
available in Essex. Each activity station is run by
a Local Club or National Governing Body. In
between activities time is allocated for business
networking.
Marketing: Radio features. Direct mail to
registered businesses in Essex. Promoted at
other events.
Planning: Activities designed to even the field
and promote fun competitive play. Developed an
unique scheduling format to ensure every team
plays each other and is never far from their next
activity.
Format: Multi-activity day with 12 different types
of activities including archery, handball, lacrosse,
sitting volleyball, frisbee golf, badminton, fencing,
hoop challenge, orienteering, bat and trap and
petanque. To conclude all participants compete
in a big game of dodgeball!
Audience: Corporate's – all abilities.
Attendance: 200 people
Essex Youth Games

Introduction: Series of competitive sporting events for school
children of all ages and abilities (including disability specific
events).
Planning: In partnership with the National Governing Bodies
for Sport and the Schools Community, a number of sport
specific events have been designed to identify talent.
Format: Leagues were developed with the winners going onto
the final knock out stage.
Audience: Young people
Attendance: Between 50 to 300 young people
BAA Stansted Youth Adventure Challenge

Introduction: Designed, pitched and delivered a highly effective
community engagement package for BAA Stansted that
generated over £30,000 in revenue. The package included:
• Promotion of local sporting opportunities and a chance
to participate in ‘The Agility Challenge’ for airport staff.
(Engaging with the working demographic)
• Volunteer opportunities for airport staff: helping to
prepare Great Notley Country Park for the BAA Stansted
Youth Adventure Challenge .(Encouraging Team building
and increasing staff motivation)
• The BAA Stansted Youth Adventure Challenge reached
over 400 young people, who participated in 8 different
types of adventure sports: Bushcraft, Kayaking,
Climbing, Parkour, Orienteering, Mountain Bike Trials,
Zip Wire and an Obstacle Course.
• Working in partnership with a group of young people, to
design ‘Section 106: Great Notley Bike Park’, creating a
lasting legacy for BAA Stansted and empowering local
young people through the medium of sport to take
responsibility for their local environment and sporting
provisions.
London 2012 Olympic Games Mountain Bike Course

Selected by London 2012 Olympic Mountain Bike committee and
Essex County Council to coordinate and provide technical
leadership for a series of press, community engagement and facility
test days with Great Britain and international riders.
Coaching and Disability Coaching Conferences

Introduction: Coaching and Disability Specific Coaching Conferences
Format: Opening presentations with break out workshops / seminars. Specific
learning requirements met.
Infrastructure: Classrooms, sports equipment, teaching resources and large
lecture hall and presentation platform.
Audience: Coaches, officials, teachers, volunteers and disabled community.
Attendance: 100 people.
SX Urban Games

Introduction: Series of 6 events
based in town centres throughout
Essex.
Format: Mixture of demos and ‘have
a go’ sessions: street dance, beat
boxing, cheerleading, freestyle
basketball, football, skate, bmx, trails,
djing, parkour, cage football and
graffiti.
Planning: Worked across six council
partners. Managed approvals and
service level agreements.
Infrastructure: Marquees, large
sound and power generation
systems, dance floors, scaffolding
structures and Graffiti board.
Audience: Young people / public
Attendance: 750-1000 people per
event
Further: Awarded the London 2012
Olympic and Paralympic ‘Inspire
Mark’ for encouraging young people
to be more active by offering a range
of alternative sports!
