Functional Area of
Mushroom Cultivation as an
Enterprise

 Enterprise: An organization that combines scarce resources for the
production and supply of goods and services. The term enterprise is
generally used synonymously with other terms such as business, firm,
company and agriculture farm.
 Mushroom is an economically profitable and promising agricultural
enterprise. Usually, small, marginal and landless farmers are engaged in
mushroom cultivation mainly because small piece of land, and little
amount of money are required as capital.
Factors of Production or
Resources
 Factors of production refer to an economic term to
describe the inputs that are used in the production of
goods or services in the attempt to make an economic
profit. The factors of production include land, labor,
capital and entrepreneurship.
 Resources required for generation of goods or services,
generally classified into four major groups:
 Land(including allnatural resources),
 Labor(including allhuman resources),
 Capital(including all man-made resources), and
 Enterprise(which brings all the previous resources
together forproduction).
Business and entrepreneurial
skills required for Mushroom
production
 Entrepreneurial skills are required if growers intend
their cultivation activities to go beyond subsistence and
local trade, and wish to develop a small business.
 These may include basic bookkeeping skills, planning
and administration, management supplies of materials
(sterilization equipment, and appropriate and timely
quantities of substrate and spores), management and
coordination of packaging and transport, and
negotiation skills and marketing.
Functional Area of Mushroom Production
in Pakistan
 Its cultivation in Pakistan is in its teething stage. Nature
has gifted Pakistan with variety of environmental
conditions suitable for their cultivation from sea level
to high mountains, where different types can easily be
grown round the year.
 They are grown in Balochistan, Sindh, Punjab and
Khyber Pakhtoonkhawa, especially in mountainous Swat
valley and Murree hilly areas. These areas are suitable
for growing white button mushroom. A khumbi
mushroom is very common in the rural areas of Sindh, a
white umbrella type known as is also consumed by the
local inhabitants of Balochistan, Sindh and the Punjab.
Functional Area of Mushroom Production
in Pakistan
 In Pakistan, mushroom cultivation has not been given
due importance, because of many reasons; whereas, the
nature has gifted favorable environmental conditions
with a huge quantity of waste material required for
obtaining beneficial food and efficient medicine through
artificial cultivation of straw mushroom. No doubt, the
most easy and economical mushroom cultivation
technology is also developed by the scientists but still
the nation is consuming/ depending only up on the
mushroom grown naturally.
Functional Area of Mushroom
Production in Pakistan
 Mushroom production is planned under natural
conditions. One important factor is prevailing climatic
condition (cold climate) in the area where the
mushroom farm will be established economically. The
different mushroom that can be cultivated artificially
have different temperature requirement for mycelal
growing and fruiting. To obtain the good quality
mushroom light, temperature, and humidity must be
carefully controlled.
Key assets or resources associated with
mushroom cultivation are described
below. Natural assets: Land and climate play a minimal role in mushroom
cultivation and this feature makes the enterprise particularly suitable for
farmers with limited land, as well as the landless.
 Unlike wild harvested fungi, grown mushrooms are not subject to any
ecological uncertainties including habitat health, nor years of
unpredictable production as a result of late or reduced rains.
 Natural assets:
 Access to sufficient, suitable and locally-sourced substrate and spores are
key determinants as to whether mushroom cultivation is likely to be
successful and sustainable or not.
 Both rural farmers and peri-urban cultivators should be able to obtain
agricultural by-products easily and cheaply to use as substrate.
 Mushroom spores can be collected from mature fruiting bodies, but are
commonly purchased from local production facilities or laboratories.
 Natural assets:
 Mushroom cultivation is compatible with other farming and horticultural
activities. It can be regarded as a very efficient system in recycling with
no waste from production to consumption.
 A sterilized composted substrate once inoculated with spawn, can be used
for three harvests and then recycled by incorporating it as an organic
mulch or fertilizer in other horticultural or agricultural systems, which can
improve soil structure, or it can be used as a nutritious fodder for poultry.
 Social assets: People draw upon formal and informal resources to help
meet their livelihood objectives, including networks and support from
families, friends, organizations and membership of groups, such as
mushroom growers associations.
 These contacts collectively strengthen the individual by helping them and
their communities access information and resources including technical
information, basic training, sources of mushroom spores, and marketing
outlets to sell their crop.
 Cultural, social and organizational issues are important for determining
the direct and indirect benefits of mushroom trade for different social
groups.
 Social assets:
 As a result of the high perishability of mushrooms, it can be of great benefit,
for small-scale cultivators selling their crop, to be organized with other
growers and to share transport costs, market contacts, etc.
 In addition, working in collaboration with other growers may enable
cultivators to establish local production, processing, or packaging facilities to
increase harvest output or product shelf life i.e. a drying facility.
 Mushroom cultivation represents a very suitable and empowering income
generating option for women in particular, because it can be combined with
traditional domestic duties and can be undertaken at home.
 Several programmes related to rural mushroom production have given women
the opportunity to gain financial independence, farming skills and higher self-
esteem.
 Human assets: Human assets relate to the skills, knowledge, ability to
work and level of health that people need to pursue different livelihood
strategies and to achieve their objectives.
 Mushrooms are labour intensive and can be undertaken as an additional
livelihood activity which fits around other household or productive tasks.
 People with physical disabilities are fully capable of accomplishing all
necessary tasks in mushroom cultivation, even if some modifications in
construction, equipment and tasks are required.
 Human assets:
 People with mental disabilities can also grow mushrooms because several
of the key tasks are repetitive and can be easily learned.
 Mushroom cultivation can also be a feasible livelihood activity for
chronically ill or weak people, who may benefit from working in a cooler,
shaded environment with minimal physical exertion, in contrast to the
more arduous work input often associated with other horticultural
products.
 Many societies have considerable traditional knowledge and skills relating
to farming activities and the management of natural resources, but the
cultivation of mushrooms is a relatively new activity throughout much of
the rural developing world.
 Physical assets
 Mushroom production for local consumption and trade needs a different
level of equipment and infrastructure than a small commercial enterprise.
 Many of the physical assets required to undertake mushroom cultivation
are not exclusive items, but rather assets which help meet livelihood
needs in general, including the transport and communication
infrastructure, clean water, a source of energy, and buildings for shelter
and storage.
 The more developed the infrastructure, the easier it is to establish and
undertake mushroom cultivation.
 Physical assets
 Mushrooms are best cultivated indoors in a dark, cool and sterilized and
enclosed building. This enables the growing conditions to be maintained
most suitable for mushrooms, in terms of temperature, humidity, uniform
ventilation and substrate moisture levels.
 Unwanted contaminants, moulds and sunlight can also be kept away from
the crop. Any small room with ventilation and a cement floor can be used,
and it should be possible to close off the room to the outside by shutting
ventilation and doors.
 The interior should be arranged so that it is easy to clean at the end of
each cropping cycle.
 The mushroom house should be well insulated (by using, for example,
fibre glass wool or expanded polystyrene) to maintain a steady
temperature, and concrete or clay tiles are preferable over corrugated
metal for roofing.
 Physical assets
 As growing mushrooms can attract flies, there are advantages of locating
the cultivation area some distance away from living spaces, either at the
other end of the house or in a different building several metres away.
 Nets placed over doors and ventilation gaps allow air in but keep the flies
out.
 Ideally, double entry doors reduce contamination and escaping spores.
Rural small-scale mushroom growing enterprises do not need expensive
equipment and some equipment may be shared between growers.
 Physical assets
 Additional equipment and tools used can include:
 • a large metal drum or pot for sterilizing the substrate in;
 • bags for growing;
 • brushes or soft cloths for cleaning mushrooms;
 • tables to place growing bags on;
 • nets to screen rooms and buildings in order to keep flies off the
mushrooms;
 Physical assets
 It is likely that spores are purchased from a nearby town or city, so
appropriate access and transport facilities are important. Transport
infrastructure is also of importance when selling mushrooms because of
their perishable qualities.
 Consequently, in areas where the infrastructure is weak it may be
beneficial for producers to process the product (by pickling, drying, etc.)
to overcome these constraints
 Financial assets: Mushroom cultivation is attractive for the resource-poor
for two reasons. Firstly, because mushroom cultivation can be done on any
scale, the initial financial outlay to establish a basic cultivation system
need not be very great, and substrate materials are often free.
 An example from Thailand illustrates the point: a mushroom house large
enough to hold 1000 mushroom bags can be built for less than US$15,
utilising the materials available locally.
 Secondly, compared to many agricultural and horticultural crops,
mushroom production systems have a short turn around; a harvestable
crop can be produced and sold within two to four months, which is very
helpful for small-scale producers.
CRITICAL FACTOR
 Mushroom production is planned under natural conditions. One important
factor is prevailing climatic condition (cold climate) in the area where the
mushroom farm will be established economically. The different mushroom
that can be cultivated artificially have different temperature requirement
for mycelal growing and fruiting. To obtain the good quality mushroom
light, temperature, and humidity must be carefully controlled.
 Another critical factor is the location of the mushroom farm, one should
consider the distance between the farm and the place where the
substrate will be obtained, the greater the distance the higher will be the
cost of transporting and hence higher the cost of production.
 Success of mushroom farming depends on the availability of markets.
Skilled workers are required for post-harvest handling, drying and packing
of the mushroom prior to market.
POTENTIAL TARGET MARKETS
 The marketing of mushroom follows the traditional
distribution channel, through middlemen or wholesalers
at farm who identifies potential buyers and negotiate
price, or directly to retailers in urban markets.
 The time and cost spent in transportation, from farm to
the retail shop, varies from area to area.
 The key factors in marketing are availability of current
market information, quality of mushroom and supply &
demand which will determine the selling price.
 . The overall production cycle for the mushroom farming comprises of 5
months under natural condition. Where as an additional crop of 5 month
can be obtained under artificially controlled conditions.
 Fresh mushroom is marketed in the super store of Karachi, Lahore and
Islamabad. The surplus produce is dried and canned which is marketed to
hotels, restaurants and bakers.
 The potential targeted markets for the mushroom are the cold areas
especially northern hilly areas of Pakistan like Kashmir Gilgit Swat Kaghan
and Muree/ galiyat.
 PRODUCTION PROCESS FLOW
 The important channels of mushroom marketing in the area are:
 (1) Mushroom grower Wholesaler/Commission agent → Retailer→
Consumer,
 (2) Mushroom grower →Wholesaler/Commission agent → Consumer,
 (3) Mushroom grower→ Retailer→ Consumer, and
 (4) Mushroom grower→ Consumer.

  • 2. Functional Area of Mushroom Cultivation as an Enterprise By Mr.Allah Dad Khan
  • 3.  Enterprise: An organization that combines scarce resources for the production and supply of goods and services. The term enterprise is generally used synonymously with other terms such as business, firm, company and agriculture farm.  Mushroom is an economically profitable and promising agricultural enterprise. Usually, small, marginal and landless farmers are engaged in mushroom cultivation mainly because small piece of land, and little amount of money are required as capital.
  • 4. Factors of Production or Resources  Factors of production refer to an economic term to describe the inputs that are used in the production of goods or services in the attempt to make an economic profit. The factors of production include land, labor, capital and entrepreneurship.  Resources required for generation of goods or services, generally classified into four major groups:  Land(including allnatural resources),  Labor(including allhuman resources),  Capital(including all man-made resources), and  Enterprise(which brings all the previous resources together forproduction).
  • 5. Business and entrepreneurial skills required for Mushroom production  Entrepreneurial skills are required if growers intend their cultivation activities to go beyond subsistence and local trade, and wish to develop a small business.  These may include basic bookkeeping skills, planning and administration, management supplies of materials (sterilization equipment, and appropriate and timely quantities of substrate and spores), management and coordination of packaging and transport, and negotiation skills and marketing.
  • 6. Functional Area of Mushroom Production in Pakistan  Its cultivation in Pakistan is in its teething stage. Nature has gifted Pakistan with variety of environmental conditions suitable for their cultivation from sea level to high mountains, where different types can easily be grown round the year.  They are grown in Balochistan, Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtoonkhawa, especially in mountainous Swat valley and Murree hilly areas. These areas are suitable for growing white button mushroom. A khumbi mushroom is very common in the rural areas of Sindh, a white umbrella type known as is also consumed by the local inhabitants of Balochistan, Sindh and the Punjab.
  • 7. Functional Area of Mushroom Production in Pakistan  In Pakistan, mushroom cultivation has not been given due importance, because of many reasons; whereas, the nature has gifted favorable environmental conditions with a huge quantity of waste material required for obtaining beneficial food and efficient medicine through artificial cultivation of straw mushroom. No doubt, the most easy and economical mushroom cultivation technology is also developed by the scientists but still the nation is consuming/ depending only up on the mushroom grown naturally.
  • 8. Functional Area of Mushroom Production in Pakistan  Mushroom production is planned under natural conditions. One important factor is prevailing climatic condition (cold climate) in the area where the mushroom farm will be established economically. The different mushroom that can be cultivated artificially have different temperature requirement for mycelal growing and fruiting. To obtain the good quality mushroom light, temperature, and humidity must be carefully controlled.
  • 9. Key assets or resources associated with mushroom cultivation are described below. Natural assets: Land and climate play a minimal role in mushroom cultivation and this feature makes the enterprise particularly suitable for farmers with limited land, as well as the landless.  Unlike wild harvested fungi, grown mushrooms are not subject to any ecological uncertainties including habitat health, nor years of unpredictable production as a result of late or reduced rains.
  • 10.  Natural assets:  Access to sufficient, suitable and locally-sourced substrate and spores are key determinants as to whether mushroom cultivation is likely to be successful and sustainable or not.  Both rural farmers and peri-urban cultivators should be able to obtain agricultural by-products easily and cheaply to use as substrate.  Mushroom spores can be collected from mature fruiting bodies, but are commonly purchased from local production facilities or laboratories.
  • 11.  Natural assets:  Mushroom cultivation is compatible with other farming and horticultural activities. It can be regarded as a very efficient system in recycling with no waste from production to consumption.  A sterilized composted substrate once inoculated with spawn, can be used for three harvests and then recycled by incorporating it as an organic mulch or fertilizer in other horticultural or agricultural systems, which can improve soil structure, or it can be used as a nutritious fodder for poultry.
  • 12.  Social assets: People draw upon formal and informal resources to help meet their livelihood objectives, including networks and support from families, friends, organizations and membership of groups, such as mushroom growers associations.  These contacts collectively strengthen the individual by helping them and their communities access information and resources including technical information, basic training, sources of mushroom spores, and marketing outlets to sell their crop.  Cultural, social and organizational issues are important for determining the direct and indirect benefits of mushroom trade for different social groups.
  • 13.  Social assets:  As a result of the high perishability of mushrooms, it can be of great benefit, for small-scale cultivators selling their crop, to be organized with other growers and to share transport costs, market contacts, etc.  In addition, working in collaboration with other growers may enable cultivators to establish local production, processing, or packaging facilities to increase harvest output or product shelf life i.e. a drying facility.  Mushroom cultivation represents a very suitable and empowering income generating option for women in particular, because it can be combined with traditional domestic duties and can be undertaken at home.  Several programmes related to rural mushroom production have given women the opportunity to gain financial independence, farming skills and higher self- esteem.
  • 14.  Human assets: Human assets relate to the skills, knowledge, ability to work and level of health that people need to pursue different livelihood strategies and to achieve their objectives.  Mushrooms are labour intensive and can be undertaken as an additional livelihood activity which fits around other household or productive tasks.  People with physical disabilities are fully capable of accomplishing all necessary tasks in mushroom cultivation, even if some modifications in construction, equipment and tasks are required.
  • 15.  Human assets:  People with mental disabilities can also grow mushrooms because several of the key tasks are repetitive and can be easily learned.  Mushroom cultivation can also be a feasible livelihood activity for chronically ill or weak people, who may benefit from working in a cooler, shaded environment with minimal physical exertion, in contrast to the more arduous work input often associated with other horticultural products.  Many societies have considerable traditional knowledge and skills relating to farming activities and the management of natural resources, but the cultivation of mushrooms is a relatively new activity throughout much of the rural developing world.
  • 16.  Physical assets  Mushroom production for local consumption and trade needs a different level of equipment and infrastructure than a small commercial enterprise.  Many of the physical assets required to undertake mushroom cultivation are not exclusive items, but rather assets which help meet livelihood needs in general, including the transport and communication infrastructure, clean water, a source of energy, and buildings for shelter and storage.  The more developed the infrastructure, the easier it is to establish and undertake mushroom cultivation.
  • 17.  Physical assets  Mushrooms are best cultivated indoors in a dark, cool and sterilized and enclosed building. This enables the growing conditions to be maintained most suitable for mushrooms, in terms of temperature, humidity, uniform ventilation and substrate moisture levels.  Unwanted contaminants, moulds and sunlight can also be kept away from the crop. Any small room with ventilation and a cement floor can be used, and it should be possible to close off the room to the outside by shutting ventilation and doors.  The interior should be arranged so that it is easy to clean at the end of each cropping cycle.  The mushroom house should be well insulated (by using, for example, fibre glass wool or expanded polystyrene) to maintain a steady temperature, and concrete or clay tiles are preferable over corrugated metal for roofing.
  • 18.  Physical assets  As growing mushrooms can attract flies, there are advantages of locating the cultivation area some distance away from living spaces, either at the other end of the house or in a different building several metres away.  Nets placed over doors and ventilation gaps allow air in but keep the flies out.  Ideally, double entry doors reduce contamination and escaping spores. Rural small-scale mushroom growing enterprises do not need expensive equipment and some equipment may be shared between growers.
  • 19.  Physical assets  Additional equipment and tools used can include:  • a large metal drum or pot for sterilizing the substrate in;  • bags for growing;  • brushes or soft cloths for cleaning mushrooms;  • tables to place growing bags on;  • nets to screen rooms and buildings in order to keep flies off the mushrooms;
  • 20.  Physical assets  It is likely that spores are purchased from a nearby town or city, so appropriate access and transport facilities are important. Transport infrastructure is also of importance when selling mushrooms because of their perishable qualities.  Consequently, in areas where the infrastructure is weak it may be beneficial for producers to process the product (by pickling, drying, etc.) to overcome these constraints
  • 21.  Financial assets: Mushroom cultivation is attractive for the resource-poor for two reasons. Firstly, because mushroom cultivation can be done on any scale, the initial financial outlay to establish a basic cultivation system need not be very great, and substrate materials are often free.  An example from Thailand illustrates the point: a mushroom house large enough to hold 1000 mushroom bags can be built for less than US$15, utilising the materials available locally.  Secondly, compared to many agricultural and horticultural crops, mushroom production systems have a short turn around; a harvestable crop can be produced and sold within two to four months, which is very helpful for small-scale producers.
  • 22. CRITICAL FACTOR  Mushroom production is planned under natural conditions.   • 23.  Another critical factor is the location of the mushroom farm, one should consider the distance between the farm and the place where the substrate will be obtained, the greater the distance the higher will be the cost of transporting and hence higher the cost of production.  Success of mushroom farming depends on the availability of markets. Skilled workers are required for post-harvest handling, drying and packing of the mushroom prior to market.
  • 24. POTENTIAL TARGET MARKETS  The marketing of mushroom follows the traditional distribution channel, through middlemen or wholesalers at farm who identifies potential buyers and negotiate price, or directly to retailers in urban markets.  The time and cost spent in transportation, from farm to the retail shop, varies from area to area.  The key factors in marketing are availability of current market information, quality of mushroom and supply & demand which will determine the selling price.
  • 25.  . The overall production cycle for the mushroom farming comprises of 5 months under natural condition. Where as an additional crop of 5 month can be obtained under artificially controlled conditions.  Fresh mushroom is marketed in the super store of Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. The surplus produce is dried and canned which is marketed to hotels, restaurants and bakers.  The potential targeted markets for the mushroom are the cold areas especially northern hilly areas of Pakistan like Kashmir Gilgit Swat Kaghan and Muree/ galiyat.
  • 26.  PRODUCTION PROCESS FLOW  The important channels of mushroom marketing in the area are:  (1) Mushroom grower Wholesaler/Commission agent → Retailer→ Consumer,  (2) Mushroom grower →Wholesaler/Commission agent → Consumer,  (3) Mushroom grower→ Retailer→ Consumer, and  (4) Mushroom grower→ Consumer.
