Knewton uses big data on AWS
Knewton is an
adaptive learning
technology
provider with a
mission to bring
personalized
education to the
world.
“
”
AWS has provided a reliable infrastructure and helped us power
materials for education companies internationally. I look at the AWS
team as a valuable partner in Knewton’s growth.
- Ryan Prichard, CTO, Knewton
• Knewton-powered analytics identify knowledge gaps and predict performance to help
educators, parents, and administrators better support every student.
• Knewton launched an enterprise-ready platform.
• The adaptive learning platform analyzes massive amounts of anonymized data, as
students use Knewton-powered products for extended periods of time while studying at
home and in the classroom.
• AWS has allowed Knewton to cut its monthly bill almost in half, meet the demands of
students and partners, and expand into new markets to become the leading adaptive
learning platform.

NYU uses Big Data on AWS
The high performance
computing facility of the
New York University (NYU)
Center for Health
Informatics and
Bioinformatics was
established in 2009 to
deliver forefront-computing
capabilities to researchers at
the NYU Langone Medical
Center.
“
”
Our facility captures massive amounts of data from Next-Generation
sequencers, microscopes, slide scanners, mass spectrometers and other research
instruments.
- Dr. Stratos Efstathiadis, Technical Director, NYU Center for
Health Informatics and Bioinformatics
• The facility must store, curate, support and enable the analysis of this data, and also
provide resources scientists can use to run simulations and generate models.
• Previously, these analysis and simulation jobs often need to run for days, or even weeks
and the bigger problem was the transfer of data. With AWS, the facility is able to move
files in parallel at speeds up to 50 megabytes per second.
• By using the cloud, NYU researchers can now access the resources they need, when they
need them. The cloud also helps researchers collaborate. Using Amazon S3, they easily
share their findings and datasets with researchers around the world.

The College Board utilizes Amazon Machine Learning
(Amazon ML)
The College Board is a
118 year old American
nonprofit organization
that represents over
6,000 universities.
“ ”
• The College Board originally created assessments that were intended to make access to
higher education more fair and equitable. The organization runs the SAT, a college
admissions exam, and recommends new test dates.
• The College Board uses Amazon SageMaker to generate and analyse millions of
calendars.
• Using Amazon SageMaker, an August data was created for the first time in nearly 100
years and it was proved so popular that there were not enough seats in the first year.
We built just a classic model and it began to impede our
innovations and features for students and educators. And so, we
decided that we wanted to modernise and embrace Microservices,
DevOps, and be agile.

Board

ETS uses AI on AWS services
ETS is a non-profit
organization that works
with education
institutions, businesses,
and governments to
conduct research and
develop assessment
program that provide
meaningful information
they can count on to
evaluate people and
programs.
• ETS uses Amazon Polly, a solution that turns text into lifelike speech.
• With Amazon Polly, ETS can introduce new features that help
students.
• One area where ETS uses Amazon Polly is in GRE, the graduate
admission exams in US. The exam is timed, but the blind and low
vision test takers cannot see the timer.
• Using Amazon Polly, these students get an “auditory glance” at the
clock—a chime signals a notice and then a message is delivered to
them. This creates a more equitable test taking scenario for these
students.

Icahn School of Medicine builds analytics platform
on AWS
The Icahn School of
Medicine at Mount Sinai
in New York City is an
internationally
recognized leader in
medical and scientific
training, biomedical
research, and patient
care.
“AWS is a natural place to build software environments.
- Sandeep Sanga, Vice President of Products at Station X,
Icahn
School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
”
• Mount Sinai researchers analyse genomic data in real time using AWS.
• AWS is the foundation for Station X’s genomics platform, GenePool, which can
dynamically scale to analyze tens of thousands of genomes in minutes.
• By using AWS and GenePool, Drs. Martignetti and Dottino (researchers) can now rapidly
mine thousands of patient records from the Cancer Genome Atlas projects and identify
genetic aberrations in a number of novel candidate genes fitting their scientific
hypothesis. Also, building GenePool on AWS gave Station X the ability to store data sets
for their translational and clinical genomics customers.

Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research
uses AWS to accelerate the processing and analysis
of data
It is the oldest medical
research institute in
Australia, it undertakes
research across a range of
areas including breast,
ovarian, and blood cancers,
type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid
arthritis, coeliac disease, and
malaria.
• The Systems Biology and Personalised Medicine Division (SBPM) at the
Walter and Eliza Hall Institute enlisted the help of DiUS and AWS to
accelerate the processing and analysis of embarrassingly parallelizable
data and image sets.
• The team built a platform in the microscopy laboratory to enable image
scientists to perform initial exploratory analysis locally on their
workstations, then seamlessly synchronize the local data sets to AWS, and
perform detailed analysis in the cloud.
• This approach has reduced typical image processing times from seven
hours to less than one. With AWS, scientists can quickly analyze massive
data pipelines, store petabytes of data, and share their results with
collaborators around the world, focusing on science rather than servers.
