As I said, I am a Solutions Architect, I work especially with clients who are at the beginning of their journey in the cloud and something that draws a lot of attention is this issue of modernization, so just to make the concept official here, this is the definition that we use.

Here’s some of the common “drivers” or compelling reasons that people get in touch with us: <Hit the Build> Cost Reduction This is one of the most common reasons that we see. For SAP customers, we see anywhere from as little at 20% to well over 50% SAP TCO reduction moving SAP to AWS. Customers like: Manufacturing Sumitomo Chemical - Reduced their processing times by 40% Hoya – Saw a 50% TCO reduction moving from their private cloud AGC – Saving 40% on SAP TCO compared to on-prem. Heineken – They estimate that their 42 TB system on AWS is half of the cost of the 6 TB system they used to have on premises Power and Utilities Engie – Reduced their IT costs by 50% and accelerated their SAP S/4HANA deployment months on AWS Contact Energy – Running SAP S/4 HANA on AWS with a 50% TCO reduction Retail Travis Perkins – Is saving $8,000 / month running SAP Hybris on AWS Life Sciences Thermo Fisher – Runs SAP S/4 on AWS and reduced their DR costs by 60% Oil and Gas GE Oil & Gas – migration led to a 52% decrease in IT costs, including SAP Hybris. <Hit the Build> Digital Transformations Including SAP S/4 We also see customers moving to digital enterprises which sometimes includes consideration of SAP S/4. Typically customers running S/4 on AWS; see improved system and application performance and leverage native AWS services to get more from their SAP investments. Examples of customers running SAP S/4 on AWS include: Manufacturing Louisiana Pacific – Reported a 20% performance improvement after moving to S/4 on AWS. Sumitomo Chemical – Reported a 40% reduction in job processing times. Power and Utilities Engie - Was able to cut their application delivery times by ½ to their users once they adopted AWS. EDF Energy – Reported faster processing times. Contact Energy – Also reported faster performance on AWS Retail Zalando – Runs SAP S/4 and leverages a large # of AWS services to ship over 90M orders / year Royal Flora Holland – Runs SAP S/4 and is shipping 12B flowers annually in the worlds largest flower auction Delivery Hero – Saw application jobs go from four hours down to 30 minutes Automotive Karma Automotive – Reported a 50% performance improvement running SAP S/4 HANA on AWS. Life Sciences Thermo Fisher – Runs SAP S/4HANA on AWS and reported deployment times down to hours from weeks Jazz Pharmaceuticals – Runs S/4HANA in highly regulated environment Bristol-Myers Squibb – Is now performing S/4HANA backups in 45 minutes down from 24 hours. Reduced average report runtime from 277 seconds to 23 seconds with SAP BW on HANA on AWS. Healthcare Union Medical Healthcare – runs the quarterly reports 50% faster after deploying SAP S/4HANA Finance on AWS <Hit the Build> Agility / Staff Productivity This is another very common business driver where customer and partner IT organizations are using AWS as their innovation platform of choice. SAP customers typically report benefits like; faster time to market and increased speed of innovation as their staff becomes significantly more productive usually leveraging AWS automation and accelerators like AWS Quickstarts. Customers running SAP on AWS reporting improved agility include customers like: Manufacturing HP – Dramatically improved Dev. Ops turn around times on AWS vs on premises Sumitomo Chemical - Reduced their processing times by 40% Visy – Uses AWS Redshift to run a Petabyte data warehouse for real time reporting AGC – Reduced their SAP landscape deployment times from weeks to hours Consumer Products Del Monte – Reduced their SAP system deployment times down to 1 hour from 2 weeks Kellogg’s - Saving 1% on trade promotion translates into $50 million in savings. By moving to AWS, Kellogg’s is able to do real time changes to their models vs up to 30 days before. SAP logistics and finance reports run up to 60% faster on AWS. Brooks Brothers – Reported going from “Weeks to minutes” to get an SAP system deployed. Life Sciences Thermo Fisher – Reported SAP deployment times down to hours from weeks Bristol-Myers Squibb – Is now performing S/4HANA backups in 45 minutes down from 24 hours. Have also reduced average report runtime from 277 seconds to 23 seconds with SAP BW on HANA on AWS Power and Utilities Engie – was able to cut their application delivery times by ½ to their users once they adopted AWS. Innogy – Runs SAP human resources, utilities industry solution, and business warehouse on AWS, and is seeing as much as 90% faster transaction processing times since moving to AWS Retail Zalando – Is an extensive consumer of AWS services across all of their teams Dunelm - Extracts product stock information from SAP for serverless ecommerce. Brooks Brothers - Uses AWS automation to dramatically improve their Dev.Ops. efficiency. The White Company – Achieved a 60% reduction in customer response times on AWS Travis Perkins – Now deploys SAP environments in hours vs days. Brooks Brothers – Reported deployment times down to hours from weeks. Media and Entertainment News UK – Now deploying SAP environments real time vs. weeks on prem <Hit the Build> Improved Security and resilience SAP customers report improved uptime and fewer unplanned outages after moving to AWS. We especially see customers leveraging AWS regions and availability zones along with partner solutions like cloud endure and others to better reliability. For instance; Transportation Seaco – Moved their DR recovery from over a week down to less than a day Manufacturing / Consumer Products Whirlpool – Is using a multi-availability architecture for extra reliable DR Compass Group - Targeted a 4-hour RTO on AWS, achieved 2-hour RTO Insurance MSG Global – Also using a multi-availability architecture for more reliability Power and Utilities Mitsui Coal Holdings – Went from 85% uptime on premises to 99.9% on AWS <Hit the Build> Data Center / Technical debt retirement The move to the cloud is well underway and customers get started with things as small as retiring a single server, or not renewing a hosting contract to customers that are “All in on AWS” and are moving 1,000’s of systems and moving out of multiple data centers completely. Examples of customers in this category include: Manufacturing Louisiana Pacific – Cap Gemini migrated over 70 SAP environments in 4 months Insurance AIG – Moved off IBM DB2 and onto SAP HANA and improved performance by 40% Consumer Products Swire Coca Cola – Is “All In on AWS” and closed 3 data centers with more than 600 business applications with nearly zero impact to the business. Ferrara Candy Company – Retired their Oracle DB and moved to HANA on AWS` Power and Utilities Madrilena Red de Gas – Moved 90% of their data center to AWS in just 2 months, including SAP systems Automotive Lamborghini – Retired their legacy Oracle DB and Moved to SAP HANA in 6 months, and have improved overall performance by 50% Oil and Gas BP – Is “All In” on AWS 3,000 applications and 7,000 servers including over 65 complex SAP environments <Hit the Build> Data and Analytics Most customers struggle to get the most from the data they need to gather and analyze. Data is trapped in multiple systems and across their own systems, partners and vendors, and even not being accessed despite low cost / risk options to acquire it. Many SAP customers use AWS data lakes for SAP and other systems as a low cost aggregation strategy and then use other AWS services like Redshift, SAP, and other 3rd party analytics offerings to run their businesses with better real-time insights. Customers doing this today include: Manufacturing Visy – Is running a Petabyte scale data lake on AWS Automotive Karma Automotive – Is using AWS data lakes and SAP S/4HANA as part of their connected car strategy Retail Zalando – Uses AWS data lakes as a central part of how they aggregate data to support shipping over 90M orders from their retail online store annually. Consumer Products Swire Coca Cola – Uses AWS S3 for storage along with AWS Redshift with SAP on AWS <Hit the Build> Improved Performance and Auto-Scaling While some customers start out looking for improved performance, many find out their business processes are faster on AWS after the fact. We do see customers actively looking to run SAP on AWS to take advantage of auto-scaling to avoid costly outages during peak times. Healthcare Union Medical Healthcare – Runs the quarterly reports 50% faster after deploying SAP S/4HANA Finance on AWS Professional Services Superior Group – Reported that SAP dialog processes are three times faster on AWS Retail Ferrara Candy Company – Achieving 50% faster retail billing since moving off Oracle and onto HANA on AWS. Delivery Hero – Runs 18 SAP systems on AWS, including a 3-tier SAP S/4HANA system and a 3-tier BW/4HANA system within an Amazon VPC. Now is closing the monthly retail books in 90 minutes down from 20 hours The White Company – Was experiencing outages on their Hybris environment on premises and now handles 4X the traffic on AWS. Transportation Seaco – Saw over-all performance increase by 90% and is now closing their monthly books 75% faster. <Hit the Build> Industry Solutions We are always surprised how SAP customers are using AWS to create unique line of business or industry capabilities. Very often, this is a combination of SAP functional capabilities combined with AWS services that provide customers with unique capabilities. Customers in this area include: Retail Ferrara Candy Company – Achieving 50% faster retail billing since moving off Oracle and onto HANA on AWS. Zalando – Is getting 300M retail website views using AWS services supported by SAP for order intake. The White Company – Achieved a 60% reduction in customer response times on AWS Delivery Hero – Now is closing the monthly retail books in 90 minutes down, from 20 hours Oil and Gas Gulfmark – Is using AWS for real time video cargo tracking tied into SAP for their shipping logistics. With AWS, they have reduced SAP hosting costs by 50%. Automotive Karma Automotive – Runs SAP S/4HANA on AWS and extensively uses higher-level AWS services
- SAP and AWS Have Been Innovating on the Cloud for over a Decade (There’s no compression algorithm for experience) Key Messages: AWS has the most experience creating SAP certified cloud offerings and continues to lead by creating ”industry firsts” Having established our infrastructure offerings years ago, we began expanding our offerings to also become the innovation platform of choice for SAP customers and partners SAP and AWS Co-Innovation SAP and AWS have a relationship that dates back over a decade when SAP first became an AWS customer. Since then, we partnered together to create many industry leading breakthroughs and a continuous stream of co-innovation on behalf of SAP customers. 2012 - Any DB: By 2015, we had 100’s of customers running SAP on any database on AWS 2016 - X1 2TB Launch: Around 2016, we really saw the adoption take off when we released the AWS X1 instances These were the only HANA offering certified for 2TB scale up / 15TB scale out at the time and customers really liked them. 2017 - X1e 4TB / 50TB Launch: The X1e instances for 4TB scale up / 50TB scale out accommodate over 95% of SAP customers today. FAST: We partnered with SAP / Partners to create the FAST program with SAP supported tools for migrations to AWS. SCP: We began hosting the SAP cloud platform (SCP), where today we continue to have the most global and service coverage. 2018 - 1,000’s: By 2018, we had 1,000s of customers running SAP on AWS. X2 Launch: The most demanding customers pushed us to still “go bigger” so we launched the X2 instances for 6,9,12,18,24TB family. These are the only offerings that run on bare metal and are integrated into a software defined cloud infrastructure. 2019 - 100TB BW + 48TB S/4: In 2019, we launched the only 100TB B/4 HANA offering, followed by the only 48TB S/4 HANA offering. Both continue to be the only native cloud enabled options available today. Solution Space: We launched dozens of AWS solution space partner offerings. S/4 QuickStart: People began using our S/4 HANA quick start to create production ready environments in less than 2 hours SAP as a Customer Also, in addition to all the co-innovation we just discussed, we continued to see SAP rely on AWS to power other offerings. SAP’s Cloud Offerings Run on AWS: Most of the SAP Cloud properties run on AWS including SAP Cloud Platform, Success Factors, Concur, Qualtrics, etc.. SAP Used Gov Cloud: SAP NS2 uses the AWS Gov Cloud region where we service both the US government agencies and other highly regulated industries We are Continuing at the AWS pace of Innovation We continue to listen to AWS customers and create new offerings at a very aggressive pace which mirrors the AWS pace of innovation. Most recently, we released AWS Launch Wizard for SAP, which will accelerate customers adoption for SAP on AWS

By comparison, some cloud providers claim to have just over 50 regions, yet most of the regions have no AZs, and just one data center, so it is not comparable to the multi-AZ, multi-data center AWS Region. Each region also has two independent, fully redundant transit centers that allow traffic to cross the AWS network, enabling regions to connect to the global network. Further, we don’t use other backbone providers for AWS traffic once it hits our backbone.

- How do I choose the Amazon EC2 instance type for SAP? Amazon EC2 offers a number of instance types (virtual machine sizes) for deploying SAP solutions. Each instance type is optimized for different use cases, with various combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking capacity. This gives you the flexibility to choose the appropriate mix for your applications. Each instance type includes one or more instance sizes, allowing you to scale your resources to the requirements of your target workload. Within each type or family there are multiple sizes: Small, Medium, Large, XLarge, 2XLarge, etc. You can run non-production SAP systems on any Amazon EC2 instance type, but you must use one of the SAP-certified Amazon EC2 instance types for production SAP systems. SAP-certified Amazon EC2 instance types have an SAPS performance rating, which can help guide you in deciding which instance type fits the requirements of your SAP applications. General-purpose instances General-purpose instances provide a balance of compute, memory, and networking resources, and can be used for a variety of workloads. Compute-optimized instances Compute-optimized instances are ideal for compute-bound applications that benefit from high-performance processors.
