3. The importance of
our unique brand
Our brand is who
we are and what we
stand for, and our
visual identity allows
us to express our
unique character and
engage with a wide
variety of audiences
through effective
communications.
Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College Brand and Visual Identity Guidelines | June 2016 03
Now more than ever it is essential that all our
communications, whether in print, online or in any
other graphic medium, conform to the same visual
identity. Only then can we be assured of presenting
a unified brand in keeping with the quality and
aspirations of our sixth form and of our students.
Having control over our brand gives us control over
the perceptions of Sir John Deane’s in the minds of
our prospects, students and their families. Strong,
clear and consistent branding will also strengthen
and enhance the feelings held by our staff, partners,
stakeholders and communities towards our sixth form.
To be successful our messages must follow
two key principles:
Clarity
All our communications must be clear and consistent
in terms of the visual messaging they convey.
Such clarity and consistency ensures the instant
recognition of Sir John Deane’s and secures our
distinctive place in what has become a highly
competitive market.
Impact
Strong visual icons such as the crest, our distinctive
colours and confident use of typography convey
a sense of confidence and strength of character.
We can enhance this further through dramatic
imagery, dynamic design and powerful language,
allowing us to cut through the clutter of marketing
messages from our competitors.
4. Who we are
Founded in 1557,
Sir John Deane’s Sixth
Form College has a rich
heritage of academic
excellence. Today, it
is widely regarded
as one the best of its
kind in the UK and

Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College Brand and Visual Identity Guidelines | June 2016 04

6. Creative approach
Our new visual
identity conveys a
balance of tradition
and innovation,
history and aspiration,
passion and expertise
and community
and support.
Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College Brand and Visual Identity Guidelines | June 2016 06
We accomplish this balance through:
• Combining traditional serif fonts with modern and
elegant typefaces or script.
• Using colours that reference our rich academic
heritage, and our unique built and natural
environments.
• Using a confident, authentic and warm tone of voice
that conveys clear, strong and simple messages.
• Using high quality images that convey a sense of
time and place and that document moments of
joy and pride.
• Retaining our sixth form crest but modernising
the design to reflect our forward-thinking outlook.
• Designing with a calm, confident and considered
approach.
A balance of tradition and
innovation, history and
aspiration, passion and expertise
and community and support.
7. Our name
In order to establish
our brand in the
minds of both new
and familiar audiences,
it is very important
to maintain a sense
of consistency when
referring to our name.
We have made a very deliberate decision to bring back
the words Sixth Form into our name and as such, we
should aim to refer to our College as Sir John Deane’s
Sixth Form College wherever possible.
Our institution’s name is:
Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College
• Verbally, and in print, the only appropriate acronym
is SJD. When using this acronym verbally, each letter
should be pronounced individually.
• Sir John Deane’s can also be used verbally and in
text as a way to provide a sense of linguistic variety.
• The Sixth Form can also be used as a reference
to our institution.
• SJD, Sir John Deane’s and The Sixth Form
should never be the primary or first mention
in any document.
You should also never use:
• John Deane’s
• Sir John Deane’s College
• SJD College
Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College Brand and Visual Identity Guidelines | June 2016 07
8. Our crest
Like our sixth form,
our crest has been
modernised in a
carefully considered
way that still holds on
to our heritage yet lives
in a modern world.
Sir John Deane, rector of Great St Bartholomew and
Prebendary of Lincoln, founded our sixth form in 1557.
He established a Grammar School for boys, known then
as Witton Grammar School (lending its name to the
Old Boys Association; The Old Wittonians). Over the
centuries, Sir John Deane’s has flourished and with an
impressive alumni, enviable track record of academic
success and recent investment in facilities and buildings,
we are proud of our unique and distinctive heritage.
Echoes of Sir John Deane’s history remain today,
most obviously in our distinctive sixth form arms.
The design has been simplified and given more space
while colours have been updated – see Changes to
our Logo for more details.
Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College Brand and Visual Identity Guidelines | June 2016 08
For as much as God’s glory, his
honour, and the wealth public,
is advanced and maintained by
no means more than by virtuous
education and bringing up of
Youth under such as be learned
and virtuous Schoolmasters,
whose good examples may as well
instruct them to live well as their
doctrine and learning may furnish
their minds with knowledge and
cunning, [I] have thought it good,
not only to erect the said Free
Grammar School, and to provide
a reasonable and competent
Stypend [sic] for the Schoolmaster
of the same, and that in respect of
the zeal that I have to God’s glory,
and for the love that I bear to my
native country...

10. Changes to our logo
Our Crest
Our sixth form crest has not been changed, rather
simplified and tidied. The icons are clearer, cleaner and
have more space to create a stronger sense of balance.
The colour tones have been updated to our new richer
and warmer blues and reds.
Our Title
Our full name, Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College
has been applied to the logo. It uses a new, modern,
charcoal grey colour, the Utopia type, and two different
font weights to create balance.
Our Date
The founding date of 1557, which has been made more
prominent, makes a direct connection to our heritage.
The logo cannot be modified in any way.

17. Designed work
Title font: Utopia
Chosen to reflect our sense of tradition and heritage,
Utopia qualifies as a transitional serif typeface: one
based on 18th and early-19th century ideals of classical
design. Designed originally by Robert Slimbach it
was one of the first typefaces used by Adobe and has
often been adopted by broadsheet newspapers and
academic journals.
Copy font: Avenir
A clean and elegant serif font, Avenir makes reference
to our new buildings and our forward-thinking outlook.
French for future, this font is a geometric sans-serif
typeface designed by Adrian Frutiger. It is the principal
font for BBC Two and is used by Apple in in iMap, Siri
and iWork for iCloud.
Highlight font: Rollerscript
And finally, a handwritten typeface that conveys
authenticity and reminds us of our academic focus.
Rollerscript was designed locally by Nick Cooke,
a Cheshire based typographer and great-nephew
of Eric Gill.

18. Using the typefaces
We selected these typefaces carefully for their clarity,
formality, and flexibility. Each reflects a key part of our
brand and by smartly combining them the overall effect
should represent Sir John Deane’s in its best light.
The mixing of font families within one document
should be kept to a minimum and should follow the
specifications outlined here.
Text should be printed in neutral dark grey but can also
be printed in any of the brand colours in the heritage
and neutral palettes.
The mixing of font weights should also be kept to a
minimum and systematically done to create emphasis
and scannability.

Title font: Georgia
Georgia is a serif typeface designed in 1993 by Matthew
Carter and used by Tom Rickner for Microsoft. It was
intended as a serif font that would appear elegant but
legible printed small or on low-resolution screens.
Copy font: Calibri
Calibri replaced Times New Roman as the default
typeface in Word and replaced Arial as the default
for powerpoint, excel and outlook. It is also now the
default for Office for Mac. A subtly rounded design,
it has been described as having a ‘warm and
soft character’.

In-house fonts in use
The fonts for in-house use have been chosen because
they are universally available on a majority of computers
and therefore don’t need additional fonts to be bought.
It means that most people will be able to see documents
in Word or Powerpoint using the same typefaces.
As with the typefaces we use in designed work, our
in-house typefaces can be used in a variety of ways to
help communicate our message in an appropriate way.

Colour references
Heritage
Our new primary colours support the heritage of our
brand and the blue and red make reference to our crest.
The tone of the red has been made warmer and richer,
with a nod to our red brick buildings, and the blue is
deeper and stronger, taking inspiration from the famous
academic institutions. Together, they create varsity
colours that reflect our traditions, heritage and sense
of academia.
Buildings and environment
A secondary palette offers more modern and bright
colours taking direct reference from our unique
buildings and our extensive grounds.
Neutrals
A palette of neutral tones give us a range of warm
and deep greys. The darkest can be applied to type.
