2. Where it all started
“Jackie Roosevelt Robinson” was born on January 31,1919 in Cairo,
Georgia
youngest of 5 (Mack, Willa Mae, Edgar, and Frank Robinson)
son of Mallile and Jerry Robinson
3. Education
attended John Muir High School
attended Pasadena Junior college
In 1939 Jackie Robinson enrolled at UCLA
At UCLA, he became the first person to be a 4 letter-man
forced to leave UCLA because of financial problems
4. The 1940’s
When Jackie Robinson left for Hawaii, he joined the semi-professional
team “Honolulu Bears”
In 1942, WW2 started and Robinson completed 2 years of being second
lieutenant
Just when Robinson was leaving the army, he was arrested for not giving
up his seat to a white man.
Because of this incident his reputation became lower and had few
chances to ever be in a team.
5. Recap of becoming a Montreal Royal(Dodgers)
in 1945, Branch Rickey noticed raw talent in Jackie Robinson
Branch Rickey sat down with Jackie to ask him if he would like to join the
NATIONAL team of the Brooklyn Dodgers
Jackie Robinson accepted the request but knew he had to face all the
cruelty and discrimination
Rickey made sure that Jackie would be treated the same as his teammates
6. Being a baseball hero
There was an incident when
Jackie was attacked by fans
and the team captain,Pee Wee
Reese put his arm around
Jackie to help him get up ..
this action became legendary
in baseball history
In 1949, Jackie received the
National League's Most
Valuable Player Award.
As soon as Jackie Robinson’s
first game, he has brought his
team to victory : on his first
year he hit 12 home runs
Throughout the years and games
his teammates learned to
grow and love him
7. A Vocal Champion for African Americans
During the year of 1952 Jackie testified discrimination to the Yankees for
not letting blacks into their team for five years and not obeying the color
barrier
In the mid 1950’s the Brooklyn Dodgers won the National League Pennant
Around the same time Jackie Robinson took their team to the ultimate goal:
The World Series
After his success, he was traded to join the New York Giants but only for a
short period of time
8. In the end….
Jackie Robinson retired on January 5th, 1957
After his retirement of baseball he continued fighting for African American
justice
On October 24th, 1972 Jackie died, age 53, seeing that he had heart
problems
His wife ,Rachael, established the Jackie Robinson Foundation which is
dedicated to his life and work
