This simple tutorial shows you how to split a single Joomla menu across two Joomla modules in different positions on the template.
It works for Joomla 1.5, Joomla 2.5 and Joomla 3.
2. Side position
Top position
The goal: using the same menu tree, we want to show the first level items in the top module position,
and show the lower level items in the side module position.
3. Here is where we want
to split the menu across
two modules
Here’s our main menu viewed in the Joomla 3 Menu Manager.
There is no special treatment here apart from the sub-menu levels branching off the “Extensions” item.
4. This is the menu
module in the
top position
This is the menu
module in the
bottom position
Here is the Joomla 3 Module Manager filtered on the module type of “Menu”. Note there are two
modules in different positions. Consult your template’s documentation to find the best positions for you.
5. The main menu
Start at level 1
End at level 1
Don’t show any sub-menus
Here is the edit form for the “Main Menu” module on the previous slide that will display in the top
position. The key is to set the start and end level to 1, and don’t show the sub-menu levels.
6. The main menu, same as the other module
Start at level 2 this time
End at level 2 or more
If you set this to “Yes”, all the sub-menus will open up.
If you set it to “No”, only the active sub-menu will open.
Here is the edit form for the “Extension” module on the previous slide that will display in the side
position. The key is to set the start to 2 and end level to 2 or more.
7. When we click on, for example, “Artof Comments” in the side menu, it will expand but “Extensions” on
the top menu will remain highlighted.
8. it’s not the end
it’s just the beginning ...
