As an entrepreneur or business owner, you know what you want to achieve next,
whether it’s your business idea, objectives or better results.
At the same time, however, you may find yourself confronted by one challenge
after another, one obstacle after another, without ever seeming to achieve the
results you want, in spite of all your hard work.
Results you want

“I keep trying, but am not winning new business.” “Despite the hard work, the business
turnover has stayed at the same low level over the last few years.” “I give them so
much support, but the team lacks initiative and is uncommitted.” “I have really looked
into it, but I don’t have the support required to set up a business.” “I have considered
all sorts of ways, but our systems are fixed. We cannot accommodate urgent requests.”
“We discussed these business objectives many times, but nothing has been done. My
business partner doesn’t care.”

Those are some of the obstacles I have heard about from business owners who
have reached a point where they see themselves as if they are stuck.
Despite their hard work to overcome them, their obstacles often become even
more grounded, actually immovable.
Immovable obstacles

So weeks pass by and they experience no progress.
Their hard work has turned into a pattern of ‘walking up and down the same spot’
or ‘continuously spinning the wheel’, with them getting no closer to actually
achieving their business objectives.
And it’s simply because of a challenge… of an obstacle.
No progress

As I talk with them further, I realise that the obstacle has become their focus of
attention. It is all they see or sense, regardless of what they are working on. That
obstacle is there, in front of them, at all times, and the more they think about it,
the bigger and more grounded it becomes.
That’s when I tell them, “Back off from that wall!” And the common answer that
follows is, “I can’t. I must overcome it to get to what I want to achieve.”
Facing a wall

And that’s the point! The meaning or significance that you attach to something is
what drives the perception that it’s crucial to you achieving what you want!
Step away from it! That obstacle, that ‘wall’, is just a wall, but the significance you
attach to it affects how you perceive it. And your perception affects the
perspective you have of the situation.
But what if you dropped your perception? What if you shifted your perspective?
Time to shift perspective

If your own current perception of the situation continues to lead you to face a
wall, consider the following.
What step would you take if there was no wall in front of you? What if you looked
in another direction, what opportunity would you see? How about choosing to
view that wall as a window, what possibilities would you see then? Or, even
better, what if that wall was the only option available to you; how would you use
it to achieve your business objectives?

Where you stand – your perspective - affects what you see. But you have a choice
of where to stand.
Standing in front of the wall is a perspective, but it is still only one perspective
among many.
And with more perspectives, you see more possibilities for the way forward.
